Advanced Building Construction (ABC) Research Opportunities Report: Industrializing Construction to Decarbonize Buildings

The DOE Building Technologies Office generally seeks to develop, demonstrate, and accelerate the adoption of cost-effective technologies, techniques, and tools in support of an equitable transition to a decarbonized building stock and energy system by 2050. This ABC Innovations Roadmap specifically focuses on and prioritizes innovations that support the industrialization of whole building retrofits and rapid growth of efficient new construction. The content relates to the integration of technologies and industrialization of processes associated with building construction and renovation. The ABC Innovations Roadmap cross-applies innovations in both the new and existing building sectors with a focus on widescale applicability. Installation flexibility is key to commoditizing solutions that are applicable for a wide variety of buildings (e.g., different building types, vintages, architectural details, and system configurations) and to help simplify decarbonization processes for the workforce.

Radiation Source Localization Using Surrogate Models Constructed from 3-D Monte Carlo Transport Physics Simulations

Recent research has focused on the development of surrogate models for radiation source localization in a simulated urban domain. We employ the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code to provide high- delity simulations of radiation transport within an urban domain. The model is constructed to employ a source location (x, y, z) as input and return the estimated count rate for a set of speci ed detector locations. Because MCNP simulations are computationally expensive, we develop e cient and accurate surrogate models of the detector responses. We construct surrogate models using Gaussian processes (GP) and neural networks (NN) that we train and verify using the MCNP simulations. The trained surrogate models provide an e cient framework for Bayesian inference and experimental design. We employ Delayed Rejection Adaptive Metropolis (DRAM), a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm, to infer the location and intensity of an unknown source. The DRAM results yield a posterior probability distribution for the source's location conditioned on the observed detector count rates. The posterior distribution exhibits regions of high and low probability within the simulated environment identifying potential source locations. In this manner, we can quantify the source location to within at least one of these regions of high probability in the considered cases. Employing these methods, we are able to reduce the space of potential source locations by at least 60%.

Design and construction of a new detector to measure ultra-low radioactive-isotope contamination of argon

Large liquid argon detectors offer one of the best avenues for the detection of galactic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their scattering on atomic nuclei. The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, 39Ar, a ß emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric 39Ar activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of 39Ar, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of 39Ar with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the 39Ar content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly ?-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. This article describes the DArT in ArDM project, including the chamber design and construction, and reviews the background required to achieve the expected performance of the detector.

The Mu2e Crystal and SiPM Calorimeter: Construction Status

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab searches for the neutrino-less conversion of a negative muon into an electron, with a distinctive signature of a mono-energetic electron with an energy of 104.967 MeV. The calorimeter is made of two disks of pure CsI crystals, each read out by two custom large-area UV-extended silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). It plays a fundamental role in providing excellent particle identification capabilities and an online trigger filter while improving the track reconstruction, requiring better than 10% energy and 500 ps timing resolutions for 100 MeV electrons. In this article, we present the status of construction and the quality control (QC) performed on the produced crystals and photosensors, the development of the rad-hard electronics, and the most important results of the irradiation tests. Construction of the mechanics is also reported. Status and plans for the calorimeter assembly and its first commissioning are described.

Advanced Building Construction (ABC) Research Opportunities Report: Industrializing Construction to Decarbonize Buildings

The U.S. building stock is responsible for 75% of total U.S. electricity use, 40% of energy use, and 35% of CO 2 emissions. To meet bold national climate change goals, the U.S. must decarbonize the building stock by 2050. However, today’s practices to build or renovate buildings to low-carbon, high-performance levels are generally labor intensive, disruptive, and too costly to quickly scale in the U.S. To retrofit 80% of the U.S. building stock in the U.S. by 2050, the retrofit rate will need to increase by about 15 times for residential buildings and two times for commercial buildings. Additionally, there is a major housing deficit in this country where nearly 600,000 people lack adequate or stable shelter, and the pace of construction is not keeping up with the growing demand. New, more industrialized, replicable, and technologically driven approaches to renovation and new building construction are imperative to help meet such significant national needs and achieve the necessary speed and scale to meet national building decarbonization goals.

The Present Status of Airship Construction, Especially of Airship-framing Construction

This work proposes to sketch, in broad outline, the status of airship construction in the various countries, at a time when commerce over great distances might be finally opened up to the airship through the performances of the "Graf Zeppelin." After a short historical review, a survey of the most important rigid and semirigid airships built since 1925, their differences and special problems, is made. In more detailed treatment, the framing construction of the more recent rigid airships and some especially interesting structural questions are investigated.

Construction of St. Benedict

The Superallowed Transition Beta-Neutrino Decay Ion Coincidence Trap (St. Benedict) is currently under construction at the University of Notre Dame Nuclear Science Laboratory. It is designed to measure the beta-neutrino angular correlation parameter in superallowed mixed beta-decay transitions between mirror nuclei in order to extract the Fermi-to-Gamow Teller mixing ratio and test theoretical corrections entering in the determination of the V ud element of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa quark mixing matrix. St. Benedict includes a large volume gas catcher to thermalize the radioactive ion beam from TwinSol, a differentially-pumped extraction system, a radiofrequency quadrupole ion cooler and buncher, and a Paul trap for the observation and detection of the β decay products. Finally, the status of each of these components will be presented.

Framework for Modeling 3D-Printed Concrete Construction to Assess Energy Efficiency and Backup Power Trade-Offs in a Mixed-Use, New Construction Neighborhood Development

This paper presents a framework that expands the URBANopt(TM) modeling platform to include 3D-printed concrete wall assemblies and assess energy efficiency and backup power trade-offs in new housing developments. Applied to a planned mixed-use neighborhood in Oil City, Pennsylvania, the workflow integrates building energy and distributed energy resource (DER) modeling to evaluate envelope and equipment upgrades alongside DER operations. Results show that advanced 3D-printed envelopes combined with efficient systems and onsite photovoltaics (PV) and storage reduce energy use intensity and sustain critical loads during outages. The framework supports planning for emerging construction technologies by quantifying key trade-offs between energy efficiency and backup power performance.
