Analysis and closed-form solutions of circular and rectangular apertures in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide

An analysis is carried out to determine the discontinuity susceptance of a circular or rectangular aperture in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide. Closed-form solutions based on the scattered amplitude calculation and aperture coupling theory are derived. Example solutions for a small circular aperture and a resonant rectangular aperture are given. The calculated results agree very well with the experiments. The results have many applications in the design of circular waveguide components and circular waveguide-backed aperture antennas.

Broadband vertical interconnects using slot-coupled shielded microstrip lines

A full-wave space-domain integral equation analysis of aperture coupled shielded microstrip lines is presented based on the Equivalence Principle. The formulation includes the capability to model multilayered substrates through the derivation of the associated dyadic Green's functions which represent the layers through impedance boundary conditions. The method of moments is used to solve for the line currents and slot voltage with even and odd mode excitations which are then interpreted through transmission line analysis to determine the two-port scattering parameters. A parametric study together with experimental data is presented which demonstrates the behavior of the coupler and the accuracy of the technique.

Dynamically variable spot size laser system

A Dynamically Variable Spot Size (DVSS) laser system for bonding metal components includes an elongated housing containing a light entry aperture coupled to a laser beam transmission cable and a light exit aperture. A plurality of lenses contained within the housing focus a laser beam from the light entry aperture through the light exit aperture. The lenses may be dynamically adjusted to vary the spot size of the laser. A plurality of interoperable safety devices, including a manually depressible interlock switch, an internal proximity sensor, a remotely operated potentiometer, a remotely activated toggle and a power supply interlock, prevent activation of the laser and DVSS laser system if each safety device does not provide a closed circuit. The remotely operated potentiometer also provides continuous variability in laser energy output.

Cross-guide coupler modeling and design

Modeling of cross-guide couplers based on the theory of equivalent electric and magnetic dipoles of an aperture is described. Additional correction factors due to nonzero wall thickness and large aperture are also included in this analysis. Comparisons of the measured and calculated results are presented for cross-guide couplers with circular or cross-shaped coupling apertures. A cross-guide coupler was designed as a component of the C-band feed to support the Phobos mission.

Recent activities in printed Antennas at LeRC

This paper will report two recent R&D efforts in printed antennas at NASA Lewis Research Center. These efforts are: (1) to enhance the current antenna performance in gain, bandwidth and pattern characteristics, and (2) to develop coplanar waveguide/aperture coupled feeding technique for dual excitation of a patch antenna. Research in area (1) has led to the development of a nonplanar linearly tapered slot antenna (LTSA) which has exhibited over 10 dB gain with broad bandwidth and excellent radiation patterns. This endfire antenna element is most suitable for use in MMIC arrays of 'brick' construction. A space power amplifier composed of active LTSA has been demonstrated and shown to have a gain of 30 dB at 20 GHz. In each of the antenna elements, a GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) three-stage power amplifier is integrated with two LTSA's. A single active LTSA has also been demonstrated and exhibited a power gain of 6.7 dB with the MMIC amplifier turned on. The aperture coupled feeding technique with coplanar waveguide feeds has demonstrated high coupling efficiency on both LTSA and patch antennas. Recent efforts have been focused on applying this technique for dual excitation (dual frequency and/or dual polarization) of a patch antenna. Preliminary results confirm the feasibility of this approach. Further development is required to improve the coupling efficiency and antenna radiation characteristics.

An optically controlled Ka-band phased array antenna

The design and development of a small, optically controlled phased array antenna suitable for communication satellite applications are discussed. A vertical integration architecture is used which minimizes the size of the array with its associated beamforming network (BFN). The antenna features a four-element linear microstrip array that uses aperture coupling of the antenna elements to the BFN; a modified Wilkinson power divider BFN; and 32 GHz, four-bit monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) phase shifters in customized quartz packages with corresponding optoelectronic interface circuits (OEIC's) for control signal reception.

Ka-band active MMIC subarray development

A 4 x 8 array consisting of two adjacent 4 x 4 MMIC subarray modules under development as part of a MMIC insertion program for the ACTS communication experiments is presented. The subarray features a high-density 'tile' configuration integrating 16 MMIC power amplifiers and 16 MMIC phase shifters. The radiating elements are cavity-backed, aperture coupled, linearly polarized microstrip patches arranged on a 4 x 4 square grid. Each module also incorporates a MMIC controller to set the phase shifts and to turn individual amplifiers 'on' or 'off'. The novel module construction technique is expected to establish a benchmark in Ka-band and higher-frequency array architectures. The hybrid integration approach used for the module can be replaced by multifunctional chips and multilayer distribution boards. The higher level of integration is to permit the dense grid spacing required for wide-angle scanning and reduced size, weight, and cost for the array.

A vertically integrated Ka-band phased array antenna

The design, development, and experimental demonstration of a small phased array antenna suitable for applications on communications satellites are discussed. Each of the vertical layers was optimized for performance, and MMICs on custom carriers were characterized prior to insertion. A vertical integration architecture is used which minimizes the size of the array with its associated beamforming network (BFN). The antenna features a four-element linear microstrip array that uses aperture coupling of the antenna elements to the BFN; a modified Wilkinson power divider BFN; and 32 Ghz, 4-bit MMIC phase shifters on customized alumina carriers. Performance data are presented for all components, and far-field antenna radiation patterns are given.

Design studies of large aperture, high-resolution Earth science microwave radiometers compatible with small launch vehicles

High-spatial-resolution microwave radiometer sensing from space with reasonable swath widths and revisit times favors large aperture systems. However, with traditional precision antenna design, the size and weight requirements for such systems are in conflict with the need to emphasize small launch vehicles. This paper describes tradeoffs between the science requirements, basic operational parameters, and expected sensor performance for selected satellite radiometer concepts utilizing novel lightweight compactly packaged real apertures. Antenna, feed, and radiometer subsystem design and calibration are presented. Preliminary results show that novel lightweight real aperture coupled with state-of-the-art radiometer designs are compatible with small launch systems, and hold promise for high-resolution earth science measurements of sea ice, precipitation, soil moisture, sea surface temperature, and ocean wind speeds.

Arbitrarily shaped dual-stacked patch antennas: A hybrid FEM simulation

A dual-stacked patch antenna is analyzed using a hybrid finite element - boundary integral (FE-BI) method. The metallic patches of the antenna are modeled as perfectly electric conducting (PEC) plates stacked on top of two different dielectric layers. The antenna patches may be of any shape and the lower patch is fed by a coaxial cable from underneath the ground plane or by an aperture coupled microstrip line. The ability of the hybrid FEM technique for the stacked patch antenna characterization will be stressed, and the EM coupling mechanism is also discussed with the aid of the computed near field patterns around the patches.
