Chloride Reduction of Mn 3+ in Mild Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Charge Ordered Defect Pyrochlore, CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 , a Canted Antiferromagnet with a Hard Ferromagnetic Component

Geometrically frustrated systems play an important role in studying new physical phenomena and unconventional thermodynamics. Charge ordered defect pyrochlores AM 2+ M 3+ F 6 offer a convenient platform for probing the interplay between electron distribution over M 2+ and M 3+ sites and structural distortions; however, they are limited to compounds with M 2+/3+ = V, Fe, Ni, and Cu due to difficulties in the simultaneous stabilization of other 3d elements in the +2 and +3 oxidation states. Herein, we employ Cl– anions under hydrothermal conditions for the mild reduction of Mn 2 O 3 in concentrated HF to obtain the CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 composition as a phase pure sample and study its properties. The magnetism of CsMn 2 F 6 was characterized by measuring the magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization data, and a magnetic transition to a canted antiferromagnet state was found at 24.1 K. We determined the magnetic structure of CsMn 2 F 6 using powder neutron diffraction, which revealed successive long-range ordering of the Mn 2+ and Mn 3+ sites that is accompanied by a second transition. As a result, the role and strength of magnetic exchange interactions were characterized using DFT calculations.

Analytical expression of a finite, long, conical canted-cosine-theta coil for particle collider interaction regions

Magnets in the accelerator interaction region (IR) present significant challenges because of high field requirements and limited available space. Conical-shaped magnets offer advantages in these environments by allowing closer placement to the interaction point while maintaining clearance from synchrotron radiation. Interestingly, numerical studies have shown that conical canted-cosine-theta (CCT) designs produce a constant field distribution along the axial direction in the IR quadrupoles for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. However, the field harmonics generated by conical CCT windings are not yet fully understood. This paper presents an analytical approach to describe the magnetic field produced by a conical surface current and proposes a method for designing conical CCT magnets for accelerator applications. First, we begin with a surface current sheet having a general cosine-theta distribution in spherical coordinates and solve the vector potential using the Green’s function. The magnetic fields generated by the conical current sheet are expressed using associated Legendre polynomials. These results are then related to circular field harmonics and integral field harmonics for designing a coil that produces a pure multipole field. Next, a single layer of the conical CCT winding path is produced based on the cosine-theta current distribution. Finally, the magnetic field quality of dipole and quadrupole conical CCT coils with multiple layers is verified using the Biot-Savart law.

Producing circular field harmonics inside elliptic magnet apertures with superconducting canted-cosine-theta coils

Superconducting magnets with noncircular aperture are desired for accelerators and many other high-field applications. This paper presents new methods for the analytic design of elliptic bore superconducting accelerator magnets. Part 1 of this work shares the derivation of current to field relations between a sheet current density on an elliptic cylinder and the magnetic field harmonics inside the aperture. This result is explored in the general context of elliptic bore magnet design with relevant scaling laws compared between elliptic and circular bore magnets. In part 2, this approach is applied to the specific geometry of canted-cosine-theta (CCT) accelerator magnets, enabling analytic winding design for single or mixed circular harmonics within elliptic aperture CCT magnets. Canted Eu magnetic structure in EuMnSb 2

Magnetic ordering breaks the time-reversal symmetry, greatly impacting material topological properties. Here, we report the investigation of the magnetic properties of the layered EuMnSb 2 , which has two sets of magnetic sublattices. Both the magnetization and electrical resistivity reveal two phase transitions with one at T N,Eu ~21K and the other at T N,Mn ~346K. Single crystal neutron diffraction refinement indicates that both transitions are originated from magnetic ordering. Below T N,Mn , the Mn sublattice forms the C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with moments [(4.5±0.6)μB at 7 K] pointing along the a axis. Below T N,Eu , the Eu sublattice forms the canted A-type AFM structure with moments [(5.9±0.8)μB at 7 K] lying in the ac plane but pointing (41 ± 1)° away from the a axis. Quantitative analysis indicates that the spin-spin correlation length, while anisotropic, has long-range characteristic in all directions for both the Eu and Mn sublattices.

Canted antiferromagnetism in the quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4

We report the synthesis and physical properties studies of quasi-one-dimensional (quais-1D) iron chalcogenide BaFe 2 Se 4 which shares the FeSe 4 tetrahedra building motif commonly seen in the iron chalcogenide superconductors. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was achieved by solid-state reaction method and characterized by x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron diffraction measurements. BaFe 2 Se 4 is a narrow gap semiconductor that magnetically orders at ~310 K. Therefore, both neutron powder diffraction results and isothermal M-H loops suggest a canted antiferromagnetic structure where Fe sublattices are antiferromagnetically ordered along the c-axis quasi-1D chain direction, resulting in a net ferromagnetic moment in the perpendicular direction along the a axis with tilted angle of 18.7° towards the b axis.

Three-dimensional stacking of canted antiferromagnetism and pseudospin current in undoped Sr 2 IrO 4 : Symmetry analysis and microscopic model realization

Recent optical second-harmonic generation experiments observed unexpected broken spatial symmetries in the undoped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2 IrO4, leading to intensive debates on the nature of its ground state. Here we propose that it is a canted antiferromagnetism (CAF) with a hidden order of circulating staggered pseudospin current. Symmetry analysis shows that a proper c-axis stacking of the CAF and the pseudospin current lead to a magnetoelectric coexistence state that breaks the twofold rotation, inversion, and time-reversal symmetries, consistent with experimental observations. We construct a three-dimensional Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling and structural distortion for the five localized 5d Wannier orbitals centered at Ir sites and demonstrate the microscopic realization of the desired coexistence state in a wide range of band parameters via a combination of self-consistent Hartree-Fock and variational calculations.

Geometric origin of the intrinsic transverse spin transport in a canted-antiferromagnet/heavy-metal heterostructure

We theoretically study the conditions under which an intrinsic spin Nernst effect–a transverse spin current induced by an applied temperature gradient–can occur in a canted-antiferromagnet insulator, such as LaFeO 3 and other materials of the same family. The spin Nernst effect may provide a microscopic mechanism for an experimentally observed anomalous thermovoltage in LaFeO 3 /Pt heterostructures, where spin is transferred across the insulator/metal interface when a temperature gradient is applied to LaFeO 3 parallel to the interface. We find that LaFeO 3 exhibits an intrinsic spin Nernst effect when inversion symmetry is broken on the axes parallel to both the applied temperature gradient and the direction of spin transport, which can result in a spin injection across the insulator/metal interface. Furthermore, our paper provides a general derivation of a symmetry-breaking-induced spin Nernst effect, which may open a path to engineering a finite spin Nernst effect in systems where it would otherwise not arise.

Canted antiferromagnetic order in the monoaxial chiral magnets V 1/3 TaS 2 and V 1/3 NbS 2

The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is present in the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) magnets of form M 1 / 3 T S 2 ( M = 3 d transition metal, T ϵ { Nb , Ta } ), given that the intercalants M form 3 × 3 superlattices within the structure of the parent materials T S 2 and break the centrosymmetry. Competition between DM and ferromagnetic exchange interactions has been shown to stabilize a topological defect known as a chiral soliton in select intercalated TMDCs, initiating interest both in terms of fundamental physics and the potential for technological applications. In the current article we report on our study of the materials V 1 / 3 TaS 2 and V 1 / 3 NbS 2 , using a combination of x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, and single crystal neutron diffraction. Historically identified as ferromagnets, our diffraction results instead reveal that vanadium spins in these compounds are arranged into an A-type antiferromagnetic configuration at low temperatures. Refined moments are 1.37(6) and 1.50(9) μ B for V 1 / 3 TaS 2 and V 1 / 3 NbS 2 , respectively. Transition temperatures T c = 32 K for V 1 / 3 TaS 2 and 50 K for V 1 / 3 NbS 2 are obtained from the magnetization and neutron diffraction results. We attribute the small net magnetization observed in the low-temperature phases to a subtle ( ~ 2 ° ) canting of XY spins in the out-of-plane direction. These new results are indicative of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the vanadium moments in adjacent a b planes, likely eliminating the possibility of identifying stable chiral solitons in the current materials.

A Field Quality Modeling in Canted Cosine Theta Dipole Magnets Wound Using REBCO Cables

In accelerator magnets the magnetic field quality is an important parameter. Using REBCO tapes or cables in magnet windings affects the magnetic field quality because of a quite high magnetization generated by these conductors. In this paper we analyzed numerically (using FEM) an effect of various REBCO cables’ magnetization on the field quality of canted cosine theta (CCT) dipole magnets. The magnetic properties of the cables were taken from our measurements of their M (H) curves at 4.2 K and magnetic fields up to 12 T. Also, flux creep effects were measured and their effects on field quality analyzed. Here we present a modeling of a CCT magnet containing 1 dipole double layer wound using a CORC and STAR cable. To make the FEM modeling less computationally “expensive”, we modelled only a section of 10 turns of the magnet's central part and calculated b3 fields on a circle of 2/3 of the innermost layer center line. Special M (H) curves measured during various field cycles (the so called “pre-injection cycles”) are effective in decreasing b 3 fields of the magnets. Flux creep effects suppress the b 3 fields further. In conclusion, using these techniques b 3 fields less than 10 units can be achieved.

Structural Analysis of Multilayer Tapered Canted-Cosine-Theta Superconducting Magnet for the Interaction Region of Electron Ion Collider

The electron ion collider (EIC) will collide high energy and highly polarized hadron and electron beams with luminosities up to 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . The magnet designs at the interaction region (IR) are challenging due to the close proximity of the hadron and electron beams. A canted cosine theta (CCT) quadrupole magnet was designed due to the space restrictions at the IR. The CCT magnet has a tapered aperture, which allows higher gradients at the interaction point (IP) side of the magnet. The tapered geometry makes the magnet not symmetrical along the axial direction. In conclusion, to validate the design in terms of the mechanical strength and the allowed deformations, a detailed structural mechanical analysis for the tapered CCT quadrupole magnet has been carried out using the finite element method (FEM) considering both the shrinking due to cool down and the electromagnetic force on the conductors.

Fabrication and Test of C3a: A Six-Layer Subscale Canted $\cos \theta$ Dipole Magnet Using High-Temperature Superconducting corc Wires

REBCO coated conductors have a strong potential for high-field magnet applications. The REBCO technology, however, is still in its infancy for accelerator magnet applications. As part of the U.S. Magnet Development Program (MDP), we developed a six-layer canted cos θ dipole magnet, C3a, using CORC® wires developed by Advanced Conductor Technologies LLC. All the layers were wound using a semi-automated winding machine. Three layers of the magnet used CORC® wires containing the SuperPower “AP” REBCO tapes and the remaining layers used the wires containing the “HM” tapes. At 77 K, both kinds of CORC® wires showed 5% to 10% degradation, after bending to a minimum bend radius of 30 or 35 mm, with respect to the self-field critical current measured before winding. At 4.2 K, the magnet reached 9.5 kA at a ramp rate of 9 A s -1 and generated a dipole field of 1.4 T. Further, the critical current of one layer degraded by 4% after a current transient up to 10.5 kA ramped in an averaged rate of 175 kA s -1 or 20 T s -1 . We confirmed the HM CORC® wire can carry a higher current than the AP CORC® wire at 4.2 K. The test results of the C3a magnet showed that the fabrication and assembly procedure can be used for the upcoming full-scale C3 magnet.

Avoided Quantum Tricritical Point and Emergence of a Canted Magnetic Phase in LaCr 1 – x Fe x Sb 3

New phases or new phenomena are often observed near-zero temperature phase transitions. These new effects represent nature’s way of avoiding quantum critical phase transitions. Here, we look at the quantum tricritical point (QTCP), the special case where two transitions are driven to zero temperature at the same time. Unlike the case of quantum critical points, the avoidance of quantum tricritical points has yet to be demonstrated. Using chemical substitution and a magnetic field, we drive LaCrSb 3 toward a quantum tricritical point. For the first time near a QTCP, here we observe the emergence of a new magnetic phase and the avoidance of the QTCP via a first order phase transition.

Left-right canted-cosine-theta magnets

Disclosed herein are superconducting gantry magnets that include multiple quadrupole winding sections placed in sequence on a curve such that the effective current direction is reversed between sections. This produces alternating quadrupole field regions along the length of the bend whose individual integral strengths can be tuned by the location of the current polarity transitions. A simple transition scheme to reverse the current between sections can be implemented to allow for the use of one continuous winding and power supply. Dipole windings can be included in the superconducting gantry magnets so that the magnets produce superposed dipole and alternating quadrupole fields. The disclosed design for the windings and transition scheme to reverse current polarity can be implemented for higher order multipoles as well.
