Miscanthus carbon flux data for SABR and UIEF

This eddy covariance (EC) gap-filled and partitioned flux dataset for Miscanthus from the SABR and UIEF farms was collected to evaluate carbon fluxes during the establishment phase of Miscanthus. The goal of this research is to quantify net carbon exchange using the EC technique at two sites and assess how carbon uptake varies with different planting densities. The dataset is contains two .csv files.

Data from: Soil carbon change in intensive agriculture after 25 years of conservation management

Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SON) are strongly affected by land management, but few long-term comparative studies have surveyed changes throughout the whole soil profile. We quantified 25-year SOC and SON changes to 1 m in 10 replicate ecosystems at an Upper Midwest, USA site. We compared four annual cropping systems in maize ( Zea mays )-soybean ( Glycine max)-winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) rotations, each managed differently (Conventional, No-till, Reduced input, and Biologically based); in three managed perennial systems (hybrid Poplar ( Populus × euramericana ), Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa ), and Conifer ( Pinus spp.); and in three successional systems (Early, Mid- and Late succession undergoing a gradual change in species composition and structure over time).

Data for Greenhouse Gas Accounting Procedures in Low Carbon Fuel Policies Overlook the Spatial Variability of Miscanthus-Derived Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Low carbon fuel policies such as the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), Canada Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), and California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) as well as the 45Z tax credit are intended to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation. Cellulosic feedstocks, optimized biorefineries, and favorable farming locations can significantly reduce biofuel carbon intensity (CI). Despite advances in field-to-fuel GHG monitoring and flexibility in resource allocation within biorefineries (e.g., governing net electricity production), rigid CI accounting procedures in current policies may limit CI responsiveness across candidate sites and processing facilities. This work examines a hypothetical biomass-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) pathway using miscanthus and alcohol-to-jet (i) to demonstrate how GHG accounting requirements drive estimates of biofuel CIs and (ii) to explore potential CI and financial implications of scenario-specific life cycle assessment (LCA). Results demonstrate that GHG accounting using the CFR/LCFS can reasonably account for distinct levels of net electricity production by a biorefinery, but only the CFR yields similar CI sensitivity to spatially explicit factors (feedstock CI, grid electricity CI) as scenario-specific LCA: most GHG accounting frameworks do not capture CI variation across candidate sites in the United States. Ultimately, this work demonstrates the importance of LCA methodological specifications in low carbon fuel policies and tax credits.

Assessing kelp nutrient bioextraction capacity in aquaculture farms in the US with implications for conservation and management

This proposal aimed to assess the carbon and nitrogen bioextraction capabilities of sugar kelp farms across a broad geographic range encompassing both the East and West Coasts of the United States. To meet this objective, the project team first developed a cost-effective sampling toolkit using readily available materials and an illustrated protocol to guide kelp farmers in standardized sample collection. Farmers were trained to use the toolkit and prepare samples for shipment to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where laboratory analyses were conducted to quantify carbon and nitrogen removal. Results were then shared with collaborating farmers, farm managers, regulatory agencies, and the general public to disseminate findings and gauge interest in the bioextraction services offered by kelp aquaculture. The project also investigated temporal and species-specific differences in carbon and nitrogen removal as a complementary objective.

AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-CLF Cole Farm

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-CLF Cole Farm. This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-CLF Cole Farm produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The Cole Farm catchment (0.65km2) is located ~ 4 km southwest of the Shale Hills site, draining orthogonally to a syncline axis of the Wills Creek Formation, a calcareous shale containing interbedded siltstone, sandstone, shaly limestone, and dolomite. Even though the farm adopted no-till practices in the 1970s, the axial channel of Cole Farm flows over a thick (>2.5 m) package of sediment in the valley floor. Soils range in texture from silty clay at the ridge top to sandy loam in the valley floor. Data was collected and funded by the Critical Zone Observatory Network.
