Load Shed Recovery With Transmission Switching and Intentional Islanding Methods After (N-2) Line Contingencies

Changing power system configuration may result in load shed recovery (LSR) because topology change can provide power flow control in meshed network. Some topologies may favor generation redispatch as compared to others and can eliminate line congestion which leads to LSR. One of the known methods for topology change is called transmission switching (TS) and research conducted in the past showed that TS is an effective means of mitigating load shedding. Another method of topology control is intentional islanding (IIS). In this manuscript, we explore IIS as a potential solution for LSR. IIS based on generator coherency has been presented in literature for mitigating cascading failures. However, IIS has not been explored solely as a LSR mechanism. In this paper, we compare the LSR based on IIS with well known LSR algorithm based on TS. The comparison is performed for IEEE 39-bus system and IEEE 118- bus system. The results show that IIS has a potential to perform better than TS in terms of computational efficiency and LSR.

SiC-Based 5-kV Universal Modular Soft-Switching Solid-State Transformer (M-S4T) for Medium-Voltage DC Microgrids and Distribution Grids

Medium-voltage DC (MVDC) grids are attractive for electric aircraft and ship power systems, battery energy storage system (BESS), fast charging electric vehicle (EV), etc. Such EV or BESS applications need isolated bidirectional MVDC to LVDC or LVAC converters. However, the existing Si-based solutions cannot fulfill the requirements of a high-efficiency and robust converter for MVDC grids. This paper presents a 5 kV SiC-based universal modular solid-state transformer (SST). This universal current-source SST can interface either a LVAC or LVDC grid with a MVDC grid in single-stage power conversion, while the conventional dual active bridge (DAB) converter needs an additional inverter. The proposed SST module using 3.3 kV SiC MOSFETs and diodes is bidirectional and can serve as a building block in series or parallel for higher-voltage higher-power systems. The topology of each module is based on the soft-switching solid-state transformer (S4T) with reduced conduction loss, which features reduced EMI through controlled dv/dt, and high efficiency with full-range ZVS for main devices and ZCS for auxiliary devices. Operation principle of the modular S4T (M-S4T), capacitor voltage balancing control between the cascaded modules, design of components including a medium-voltage (MV) medium-frequency transformer (MFT) to realize a 50 kVA 5 kV DC to 600 V DC or 480 V AC M-S4T are presented. Importantly, the MV MFT prototype achieves very low leakage inductance (0.13%) and 15 kV insulation with coaxial cables and nanocrystalline cores. Here, the proposed universal modular SST is compared against the DAB solution and verified with DC-DC and DC-AC simulation and 4 kV experimental results. Significantly, the MV experimental results of a modular DC transformer with each module at MVDC are rarely covered in the literature and reported for the first time.

Coupled-DC Module-Based Photovoltaic System With Power Mismatch-Tolerated Modulation

Here, this article presents a coupled-DC power module-based cascaded multilevel converter integrating utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) generations (coupled-DC-link power module (CDPM)-PV). CDPM-PV inherits merits such as modular structure, distributed maximum power point tracking (MPPT), direct distribution grid access, from cascaded H-bridge-based PV (CHB-PV) system. But, it supplies more flexible power routes than CHB-PV, through coupling different DC-links. Power routes are intended for enlarging the entire operating range including conditions of active power mismatch arising from nonideal elements such as partial shading and parameter variations. The system construction with its self-balancing principle is first introduced. Switching states for different operating regions are then derived based on the principle of easing implementation. Based on these, a modulation strategy including initial switching pattern selection and coordinated power routing is proposed to allow module-mismatches. Operating ranges are also analyzed and compared with conventional CHB-PV. Simulation results of a 3-MW/13.8-kV system developed in MATLAB/Simulink platform, and experiment results based on a 2.4-kW/311-V setup are presented and have demonstrated that the CDPM-PV topology with proposed modulation strategy can not only ride through a larger range of module mismatches, but also improve solar power utilization and system efficiency owing to noncompromised MPPT.

Flux Balancing Control of Ungapped Nanocrystalline Core-Based Transformer in Dual Active Bridge Converters

Transformer flux dc bias is a critical issue, impacting the reliable operation of dual active bridge (DAB) converters especially when ungapped high permeability nanocrystalline core is used. Steady state current dc bias can easily saturate ungapped nanocrystalline transformers, and it is even more dangerous in transient conditions. A dc bias model is proposed to analyze steady state dc bias in different load conditions. The magnetizing current detection is necessary for closed-loop control of dc bias; conductors' position is shown to impact sensor noise, and it is analyzed in detail. To deal with both steady state and transient dc bias, a unified flux balancing control (UFBC) is proposed introducing a predictive bias suppression (PBS) method with closed-loop flux balancing control (CFBC). With the proposed PBS, both primary/secondary current balance and flux balance can be achieved within one switching cycle using UFBC. Power characteristics and interaction between power control and flux balancing control of DAB converters are analyzed, and the CFBC needs to work in a low bandwidth due to sensor bandwidth limitation and interaction between power control and flux balancing control. Lastly, the UFBC is verified on a 300-kW cascaded DAB converter prototype.

A Novel Decentralized PWM Interleaving Technique for Ripple Minimization in Series-Stacked DC-DC Converters

Cascaded dc-dc converters are commonly used in applications where distributed energy sources or loads are connected to elevated voltage levels for power transfer. In such systems, it is advantageous to minimize the ripple on the bus current and voltage by proper phase shifting of the pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulses among the converters via a method known as interleaving. Existing approaches use either a centralized controller or separate communication lines among the stacked converters to control their relative PWM switch transitions. The key drawbacks are that these methods entail significant wiring, the central controller acts as a single point of failure, and implementation on very large numbers of units is impractical. In this paper, we introduce a decentralized interleaving control (DIC) strategy that acts on local current measurements at every converter and achieves communication-free PWM interleaving among the series-stacked converters. The proposed controller is simple in structure and is shown to converge asymptotically to the interleaved state irrespective of clock drifts among the digital signal processors. Experimental results are provided for a system of five series-connected converters showing a 10× reduction in the current ripple compared to normal operation.

Heralded Multiplexed High-Efficiency Cascaded Source of Dual-Rail Entangled Photon Pairs Using Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

Deterministic sources of high-fidelity entangled qubit pairs encoded in the dual-rail photonic basis, i.e., presence of a single photon in one of two orthogonal modes, are a key enabling technology of many applications of quantum information processing, including high-rate, high-fidelity quantum communications over long distances. The most popular and mature sources of such photonic entanglement, e.g., those that leverage spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) or spontaneous four-wave mixing, generate an entangled (so-called continuous-variable) quantum state that contains contributions from high-order photon terms that lie outside the span of the dual-rail basis, which is detrimental to most applications. One often uses low pump power to mitigate the effects of those high-order terms. However, that reduces the pair generation rate, and the source becomes inherently probabilistic. We investigate a cascaded source that performs a linear-optical entanglement swap between two SPDC sources, to generate a heralded photonic entangled state that has a higher fidelity (to the ideal Bell state) compared to a free-running SPDC source. Furthermore, with the Bell swap providing a heralding trigger, we show how to build a multiplexed source, which despite reasonable switching losses and detector loss and noise, yields a fidelity versus success probability trade-off of a high-efficiency source of high-fidelity dual-rail photonic entanglement. We find, however, that there is a threshold of 1.5 dB of loss per switch, beyond which multiplexing hurts the fidelity versus success probability trade-off.

A Novel Three-Phase Isolated LLC and Non-Isolated LCL-T Resonant Converter for Fuel Cell Applications

In this paper, a novel three-phase isolated LLC and non-isolated LCL−T resonant converter topologies are introduced for fuel cell applications. In order to improve the fuel cell DC/DC converter efficiency, the current amplitude should be reduced in the power stage components. Cascaded connections of fuel cell blocks through a controllable system enable using higher voltage amplitude and bring the current amplitude lower at the target power. In this way, power losses in the passive components can be reduced, and maximum energy transfer can be established, improving the DC/DC converter efficiency from the fuel cell to the load. The introduced new converter also achieves soft switching (ZVS), minimizing the switching losses in all input and output load conditions. The presented three-phase isolated LLC and non-isolated LCL−T resonant converter systems, fed by three fuel cell modules with an output range of 190380 V, deliver 580−730 V at 450 kW maximum output power. The results reveal that the proposed systems have the advantage of reducing the size, volume, and weight and increasing the overall DC/DC converter system efficiency compared to the single-phase systems.

Bound States in the Continuum on a Silicon Chip with Dynamic Tuning

Expanding bound states in the continuum (BIC) beyond photonic crystal systems may enable broader applications benefiting from the unique properties of BIC states. We use photonic integrated circuit to realize a Fabry-Pérot BIC on a silicon chip. The devices consist of cascaded ring resonators with tunable resonance frequencies and phase delays. As a result, the BIC state is dynamically tuned with electrical I/O. We analyze the mechanism of the formation of BIC states in this waveguide system and point out the fundamental differences between the BIC states and electromagnetically induced transparency states in integrated photonics. The high transmission protected by the BIC state enables versatile optical filters, which are capable of independent control over switching, peak position, and quality factor. We also demonstrate the scalability of this platform. As a result, this integrated silicon photonic platform brings opportunities for practical BIC applications.

REC protein family expansion by the emergence of a new signaling pathway

This report presents multi-genome evidence that REC protein family expansion occurs when the emergence of new pathways gives rise to functional discordance. Specificity between residues in REC domain containing response regulators with paired histidine kinases is under negative purifying selection, constrained by the presence of other bacterial two-component systems signaling cascades that share sequence and structural identity. Presuming that the two-component systems can evolve by neutral amino acid changes (neutral drift) when purifying evolutionary constraints are relaxed, how might the REC protein family expand by amino acid changes when these constraints remain intact? Using an unsupervised machine learning approach to observe the sequence landscape of REC domains across long phylogenetic distances, we find that within-gene recombination, a subcategory of gene conversion, switched the effector domain and, consequently, the regulatory context of a duplicated response regulator from transcriptional regulation by σ54 to that by σ70. We determined that the recombined response regulator diverged from its parent by episodic diversifying selection and neutral drift. Functional experiments of the parent of recombined response regulators in a model Pseudomonas putida KT2440 model system revealed that the parent and recombined response regulators sense and respond to different carboxylic acids. Finally, a residue-switching experiment using structural predictions and functional characterization suggests that the new residues in the recombined regulator could form a new interaction interface and mediate condition-specific phosphotransfer. Overall, our study finds that genetic perturbations can create conditions of functional discordance, whereby the REC protein family can evolve by episodic diversifying selection.

Turbulent Heating in Collisionless Low-beta Plasmas: Imbalance, Landau Damping, and Electron–Ion Energy Partition

An understanding of how turbulent energy is partitioned between ions and electrons in weakly collisional plasmas is crucial for modeling many astrophysical systems. Using theory and simulations of a four-dimensional reduced model of low-beta gyrokinetics (the “Kinetic Reduced Electron Heating Model”), we investigate the dependence of collisionless heating processes on plasma beta and imbalance (normalized cross-helicity). These parameters are important because they control the helicity barrier, the formation of which divides the parameter space into two distinct regimes with remarkably different properties. In the first, at lower beta and/or imbalance, the absence of a helicity barrier allows the cascade of injected power to proceed to small (perpendicular) scales, but its slow cascade rate makes it susceptible to significant electron Landau damping, in some cases leading to a marked steepening of the magnetic spectra on scales above the ion Larmor radius. In the second, at higher beta and/or imbalance, the helicity barrier halts the cascade, confining electron Landau damping to scales above the steep “transition-range” spectral break, resulting in dominant ion heating. We formulate quantitative models of these processes that compare well to simulations in each regime, and combine them with results of previous studies to construct a simple formula for the electron–ion heating ratio as a function of beta and imbalance. This model predicts a “winner takes all” picture of low-beta plasma heating, where a small change in the fluctuations' properties at large scales (the imbalance) can cause a sudden switch between electron and ion heating.

Operation of Dual-T-Type Modular Multilevel Converter for Uninterrupted Power Supply Under Bridge Failures

Dual-T-type modular multilevel converter (DTMMC) is an alternative to the existing uninterrupted power supply (UPS) due to its advantage in flexible leg reusing, multiple power ports, and high operating efficiency. Here, in this article, a DTMMC-UPS, which has series configurations on both input/output ac sides, obtains high-voltage grid/load accessing interfaces is presented. In the described system, the fact that copies of T-type legs are employed makes semiconductor failure common to happen. Moreover, both the coupling between rectifier and inverter conversions and the confliction between intercell and inner-cell voltage balancing make fault-tolerant control a tough issue. In this article, the switch fault types are first clarified and diagnosed by the different impacts on normal operation. An improved voltage vector modulation is then deduced to facilitate the planning of proper primary switching patterns, to achieve rectifier side normal operation. The secondary alternated level-shifted pulsed-width modulation (LS-PWM) is also modified to achieve inverter side normal operation. The experiment results are supplied to verify the validity of the modulation-coordinated fault toleration strategy.

Predictive Direct DC-Link Control for 7.2 kV Three-Port Low-Inertia Solid-State Transformer With Active Power Decoupling

Promising for applications including renewable energy and electric vehicle fast charging, a medium-voltage (MV) solid-state transformer (SST) typically has multiple modules series stacked, which requires the modules to be single phase. One critical issue of the single-phase SST is the double-line-frequency power ripple. Traditionally, large passives are used to buffer the ripple, resulting in significantly increased volume and cost. This article for the first time proposes active power decoupling (APD) for the SST and a predictive direct DC-link control method, using a current-source single-stage SST as an example. An electrolytic capacitor-less buffer port is used to absorb the ripple, which tolerates up to a 30% voltage ripple for small capacitance. The APD SST control is challenging. First, the current-source SST realizes isolation, DC link, and multiport in a single stage. Second, different from conventional SSTs or APD converters, the low-inertia DC link in this SST has a 40% switching ripple, which is difficult to stabilize. To address the control challenge, a direct DC-link control architecture and a predictive control method are proposed. Simulation and experimental results verify the proposed control method on an MV SiC modular soft-switching solid-state transformer (M-S4T) prototype. Here, the proposed APD reduces the SST volume by 53.8%. Importantly, the proposed concept is not limited to the M-S4T but is generic to other SSTs or APD converters.

Dimer Asymmetry and Light Activation Mechanism in Brucella Blue-Light Sensor Histidine Kinase

The ability to sense and respond to environmental cues is essential for adaptation and survival in living organisms. In bacteria, this process is accomplished by multidomain sensor histidine kinases that undergo autophosphorylation in response to specific stimuli, thereby triggering downstream signaling cascades. However, the molecular mechanism of allosteric activation is not fully understood in these important sensor proteins. Here, we report the full-length crystal structure of a blue light photoreceptor LOV histidine kinase (LOV-HK) involved in light-dependent virulence modulation in the pathogenic bacterium Brucella abortus. Joint analyses of dark and light structures determined in different signaling states have shown that LOV-HK transitions from a symmetric dark structure to a highly asymmetric light state. The initial local and subtle structural signal originated in the chromophore-binding LOV domain alters the dimer asymmetry via a coiled-coil rotary switch and helical bending in the helical spine. These amplified structural changes result in enhanced conformational flexibility and large-scale rearrangements that facilitate the phosphoryl transfer reaction in the HK domain.

Sub-10 nm upconversion nanocrystals for long-term single-particle tracking

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles are attractive single-molecule imaging probes due to their high photostability and anti-Stokes luminescence. However, achieving both small particle size and strong brightness has remained a major challenge, as reducing size often leads to dimmer emission. Herein, we fabricate a sub-10 nm cascade actively protected upconversion nanoparticles, which shows a 33-fold enhanced upconversion efficiency at the single-particle level compared to larger ~19 nm conventional nanoparticles. Theoretical modeling and time-resolved measurements show that emission loss mainly comes from energy leakage of Er 3+ ions to surface defects. By introducing a NaYbF 4 layer as photon-harvesting and protective intermediate layer, we minimize this energy loss and significantly boost brightness. A monolayer of inert NaLuF 4 can effectively suppress the surface quenching to Yb 3+ . Using these ultra-small bright probes, we successfully tracked single epidermal growth factor receptor molecules on live cells for up to one hour, revealing dynamic switching between different diffusion modes.

7.2 kV Three-Port SiC Single-Stage Current-Source Solid-State Transformer With 90 kV Lightning Protection

This article proposes a multiport modular single-stage current-source solid-state transformer (SST) for applications like photovoltaic, energy storage integration, electric vehicle fast charging, data center, etc. The 7.2 kV 50 kVA current-source SST consists of five input-series output-parallel modules, each based on 3.3 kV SiC reverse-blocking MOSFET-plus-diode modules. The proposed SST has some unique features. First, compared to the voltage-source or matrix converter-based SSTs, the current-source SST has a unique advantage of single-stage isolated AC/DC or AC/AC conversion with an inductive DC link, but no medium-voltage (MV) AC experiments have been reported. This article for the first time demonstrates MV AC current-source SST up to 7.5 kV peak. Second, the multiport SST has a buffer port for active power decoupling (APD) or energy storage integration. The double-line-frequency power ripple from single-phase AC grid normally results in a large capacitor size in MV SSTs. The APD scheme is proposed in MV applications for the first time to enable a reduced DC link and the electrolytic capacitor-less SST with high reliability. Third, as a direct grid-connected converter without line-frequency transformer, insulation and protection are critical. A medium-frequency transformer design passes 55 kV basic-insulation level (BIL) and 60 kV high potential dielectrics withstand test with only 0.09% leakage inductance. Importantly, a lightning protection scheme is presented to protect the SST itself from 90 kV BIL impulse. Fourth, the proposed current-source SST topology is a modular soft-switching solid-state transformer (M-S4T) with full-range zero-voltage switching and controlled dv/dt for low electromagnetic interference. Furthermore, these concepts are verified in a three-port M-S4T prototype with forced oil cooling under single-module, stacked-module, steady-state, and dynamic operations.

Operando Investigation of the Molecular Origins of Dipole Switching in P(VDF‐TrFE‐CFE) Terpolymer for Large Adiabatic Temperature Change

Abstract Relaxor ferroelectric polymers exhibiting a giant electrocaloric effect (ECE) can potentially be used to create next‐generation solid‐state coolers. Under an electric field, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene‐chlorofluoroethylene) terpolymer goes through a large dipolar entropy change producing a high adiabatic temperature change (Δ T ECE ). This work resolves the molecular origins of the large entropy change behind the electric field‐induced dipole switching. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with a high voltage source is used to operandoly observe the characteristic molecular vibrational modes. A short‐range trans (T) conformation of the CF 2 ‐CH 2 dyads interrupted by a gauche (G) conformation, e.g., TTTG in the terpolymer chain, undergoes a dynamic transformation that leads to a corresponding Δ T ECE whenever an electric field is applied. The molecular dynamics simulation also proves that the energy barrier that the transformation from TTTGs into a long T sequence overcomes is smaller than that for all other conformations. A mixed solvent system is used to obtain T3G‐enriched terpolymer films exhibiting a 4.02 K Δ T ECE at 60 MV m −1 and these films are employed to manufacture a 2‐layer‐cascaded cooling device that achieves a 6.7 K temperature lift, the highest reported value for a 2‐layer cascaded device made of fluoropolymers.

Stacked Low-Inertia Converter or Solid-State Transformer: Modeling and Model Predictive Priority-Shifting Control for Voltage Balance

This paper presents control challenges of stacked low-inertia converter (SLIC) or cascaded reduced dc-link solid-state transformer (SST) and proposes a novel model predictive priority-shifting (MPPS) control with implicit modulator and a discrete-time large-signal model for voltage balancing and dc-link regulation. Low-inertia converters, featuring small electrolytic capacitor-less dc links, dramatically reduce cost, size, and weight compared to conventional solutions. However, without a large dc-link buffer, the input and output are tightly coupled, leading to significant control challenges. The control becomes even more challenging with these converters stacked input-series output-parallel (ISOP) for medium-voltage (MV) grid, which causes coupling between the modules besides the coupling within each module. This paper analyzes the multi-objective, multi-degree of freedom control problem, using the modular soft-switching solid-state transformer (M-S4T) as an example of the SLIC. First, distribution of control efforts under controller saturation is critical because multiple control objectives can be conflicting, especially when the module voltages are unbalanced and are being restored. The MPPS can shift the priorities to address this issue. Second, due to the low inertia and high dc-link ripple, classic space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM), average model with small-ripple assumption, and control design based on small-signal model cannot accurately modulate, model, and control the nonlinear reduced dc link. Therefore, a discrete-time large-signal model of the M-S4T is established to derive the predictive control in the MPPS. The MPPS and the PI control are compared in MV simulations to show the issue of applying the PI to the SLIC and the effectiveness of the MPPS for voltage balancing and dc-link regulation in a deadbeat manner. Finally, the proposed control is tested on a 5 kV ISOP SiC SST prototype to verify priority shifting to address controller saturation issue and fast and robust voltage balancing.
