Proceedings of the Fifth Photovoltaic Specialists Conference: Volume II - Thin Film Solar Cells and Radiation Damage

This conference, the fifth of its kind, was cosponsored by IEEE, AIAA, and the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. Facilities for meetings and other arrangements were the responsibility of NASA-Goddard. Presentations are included in the order in which delivered at the conference and were prepared from papers submitted to the Power Information Center (PIC) through the IEEE. Presentations are arranged in three volumes and five sections reflecting the arrangement of the conference into three days and five sessions. Contents of the volumes are as follows: - Volume I - Advanced Solar Cells - Volume II - Thin Film Solar Cells and Radiation Damage - Volume III - Solar Power Systems Considerations

An advanced Ni-Cd battery cell design

The evolution of an advanced Ni-Cd space battery cell design continues to prove very promising. High oxygen/hydrogen gas recombination rates (currently up to a C/5 charge rate) and increased electrolyte activation level tolerance (currently up to 5.6 grams Ah of positive capacity) were demonstrated by test. A superior performance, extended life battery cell offering advantages should soon be available for mission applications

High voltage battery cell scanner development

Battery cell voltage scanners have been previously used in low voltage spacecraft applications. In connection with future missions involving an employment of high-power high voltage power subsystems and/or autonomous power subsystem management for unattended operation, it will be necessary to utilize battery cell voltage scanners to provide battery cell voltage information for early detection of impending battery cell degradation/failures. In preparation for such missions, a novel battery cell voltage scanner design has been developed. The novel design makes use of low voltage circuit modules which can be applied to high voltage batteries in a building block fashion. A description is presented of the design concept and test results of the high voltage battery cell scanner, and its operation with an autonomously managed power subsystem is discussed.

Quantifying Primary Arc-Induced Degradation of Perovskite Solar Cells

Primary arcing induced by spacecraft charging presents a significant hazard to thin film solar cells if left unchecked. Here, we present the results of a preliminary effort to quantify the impacts of primary arcing to perovskite solar cells. Solar cells operating in a charged environment are susceptible to electrostatic discharges known as arcing. While primary arcs are not generally considered a major concern for traditional space PV, for thin film cells, these can induce significant heating and subsequent damage. We conducted ESD testing in a LEO-like plasma in the National Plasma Interaction Facility at NASA Glenn Research Center to quantify impacts to cell performance by arcing. The perovskites tested saw a decrease of short circuit current with an increased number of arcs, averaging a relative change of 73.89 ± 15.90% after 60 total arcs supplied a cumulative energy dose of 76.12 mJ to the string. Ongoing work entails testing with larger perovskite data sets and expanding to include additional thin film cell technologies to demonstrate the risk unmitigated primary arcing presents.

Battery Relevant Cell Side Wall Rupture Characterization

The propensity for a cell design to experience can side wall rupture (SWR) during thermal runaway is highly influenced by how a battery design mechanically constrains its cells. Testing cells while unsupported has been found to yield false negative results that don't represent this risk in a battery configuration. This talk addresses how to verify the adequacy of battery design measures used to control SWR and how to get results relevant, accurate, and statistically defendable for a proposed battery design.

Self Discharge of Nickel-Hydrogen Cells

Values for the capacity loss with time, naturally on open circuit stand, and information regarding the minimum amount of circuit charge needed to keep the cell charged can be determined from the self-discharge behavior of nickel hydrogen cells. Furthermore, the rate of reaction between hydrogen and a charged nickel electrode is also open for nickel cadmium batteries. In a nickel hydrogen cell, the hydrogen is stored as pressurized gas and the cell stack with the charge that is oxidized nickel-hydroxide electrode is in direct contact with the hydrogen. Therefore, the rate of reaction can be measured easily and precisely by monitoring the charge, the change in hydrogen pressure with time. Measures made on twelve 15 ampere hour nickel hydrogen cells of different stack configurations built for COMSAT are discussed.

Electrochemical cells and methods of manufacturing the same

Electrochemical cells and methods of making electrochemical cells are described herein. In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a multi-layer sheet for encasing an electrode material for an electrochemical cell. The multi-layer sheet including an outer layer, an intermediate layer that includes a conductive substrate, and an inner layer disposed on a portion of the conductive substrate. The intermediate layer is disposed between the outer layer and the inner layer. The inner layer defines an opening through which a conductive region of the intermediate layer is exposed such that the electrode material can be electrically connected to the conductive region. Thus, the intermediate layer can serve as a current collector for the electrochemical cell.

Nickel-cadmium Battery Cell Reversal from Resistive Network Effects

During the individual cell short-down procedures often used for storing or reconditioning nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries, it is possible for significant reversal of the lowest capacity cells to occur. The reversal is caused by the finite resistance of the common current-carrying leads in the resistive network that is generally used during short-down. A model is developed to evaluate the extent of such a reversal in any specific battery, and the model is verified by means of data from the short-down of a f-cell, 3.5-Ah battery. Computer simulations of short-down on a variety of battery configurations indicate the desirability of controlling capacity imbalances arising from cell configuration and battery management, limiting variability in the short-down resistors, minimizing lead resistances, and optimizing lead configurations.

New Developments in Nickel-Hydrogen Dependent Pressure Vessel (DPV) Cell and Battery Design

THe Dependent Pressure Vessel (DPV) Nickel-Hydrogen (NiH2) design is being developed as an advanced battery for military and commercial, aerospace and terrestrial applications. The DPV cell design offers high specific energy and energy density as well as reduced cost, while retaining the established Individual Pressure Vessel (IPV) technology flight heritage and database. This advanced DPV design also offers a more efficient mechanical, electrical and thermal cell and battery configuration and a reduced part count. The DPV battery design promotes compact, minimum volume packaging and weight efficiency, and delivers cost and weight savings with minimal design risk.
