Superconducting-like response in driven systems near the Mott transition

Here we point out that fractionalized bosonic charge excitations can explain the recently discovered photoinduced superconducting-like response in $\kappa$-(ET) 2 Cu [N(CN) 2 ] Br, an organic metal close to the Mott transition. The pump laser exerts a periodic drive on the fractionalized field, creating a nonequilibrium condensate, which gives a Drude peak much narrower than the equilibrium scattering rate, hence a superconducting-like response. Our proposal illuminates alternative possibilities of detecting fractionalization and can be readily tested in spin liquid candidates and in cold atom systems.

First Constraints on General Neutrino Interactions Based on KATRIN Data

The precision measurement of the tritium β-decay spectrum performed by the KATRIN experiment provides a unique way to search for general neutrino interactions (GNIs). All theoretically allowed GNI terms at dimension 6 involving neutrinos are incorporated into a low-energy effective field theory, and can be identified by specific signatures in the measured tritium β spectrum. In this Letter an effective description of the impact of GNIs on the β spectrum is formulated and the first constraints on the effective GNI parameters are derived based on the 4 ×10 6 electrons collected in the second measurement campaign of KATRIN in 2019. In addition, constraints on selected types of interactions are investigated, thereby exploring the potential of KATRIN to search for more specific new physics cases, including a right-handed W boson, a charged Higgs boson, or leptoquarks.

Measurement of W±-boson differential cross-sections in proton–proton collisions with low pile-up data at s=5.02 TeV and 13TeV with the ATLAS detector

High precision single-differential W±$$W^\pm $$-boson production cross-sections as a function of electron or muon transverse momentum pT$$p_\textrm{T}$$ or their pseudorapity η$$\eta $$, as well as double-differential cross-sections as functions of these variables, are measured in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=5.02$$\sqrt{s}=5.02$$ TeV and 13 TeV. The W-boson charge asymmetry as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ is also measured. The data, collected in dedicated runs at reduced instantaneous luminosity with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, correspond to integrated luminosities of 255 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 5.02 TeV and 338 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 13 TeV. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in the strong coupling constant αs$$\alpha _s$$ including transverse-momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using several parton distribution functions. The impact of the measured differential cross-sections as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ on the determination of these functions is studied using a profiling technique.

Tau-jet signatures of vectorlike quark decays to heavy charged and neutral Higgs bosons

We study 4 b + 2 τ and 4 b + 1 τ signatures of heavy neutral and charged Higgs bosons originating from cascade decays of pair-produced new quarks. Decays of vectorlike quarks through heavy Higgses can easily dominate in the two Higgs doublet model of type-II, and the studied signatures are common to many possible decay chains. We design search strategies for these final states and discuss the mass ranges of heavy Higgs bosons and new quarks that can be explored at the Large Hadron Collider as functions of branching ratios in a model independent way. We further combine the results with a similar study focusing on decays which lead to a 6 b final state and interpret the sensitivity to charged and neutral Higgs bosons and vectorlike quarks in the type-II two Higgs doublet model. We find that the LHC reach for their masses extends to well above 2 TeV in the case of an SU(2) doublet quark and to at least 1.8 TeV for a bottom-like SU(2) singlet quark in the whole range of tan β between 1 and 50.

Search for charged lepton flavor violating 𝑍 and 𝑍′ boson decays in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for flavor violating decays of the 𝑍 boson to charged leptons is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Each of the decays 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜇, 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜏, and 𝑍 → 𝜇⁢𝜏 is considered. The data are consistent with the backgrounds expected from standard model processes. For the 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜇 channel the observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is 1.9⁢(2.0) × 10 −7 , which is the most stringent direct limit to date on this process; the corresponding limits for the 𝑍 → 𝑒⁢𝜏 and 𝑍 → 𝜇⁢𝜏 channels are 13.8⁢(11.4) × 10 −6 and 12.0⁢(5.3) × 10 −6 , respectively. Additionally, the 𝑒⁢𝜇 final state is used to search for lepton flavor violating decays of 𝑍′ resonances in the mass range from 110 to 500 GeV. No significant excess is observed above the predicted background levels.

Charged and neutral Higgs bosons in final states with 6 bottom quarks

In extensions of two Higgs doublet models with vectorlike quarks, the decays of vectorlike quarks may be easily dominated by cascade decays through charged or neutral Higgs bosons leading to signatures with 6 top or bottom quarks. Since top quark decays also contain bottom quarks, the 6 bottom quarks in final states is a common signature to a large class of possible decay chains. We present a search strategy focusing on this final state and find the mass ranges of vectorlike quarks and Higgs bosons that can be explored at the Large Hadron Collider. Among other results the sensitivity to the charged Higgs boson, extending above 2 TeV, stands out when compared to models without vectorlike matter.

Massless charged particles tunneling radiation from a RN-dS horizon and the linear and quadratic GUP

Highlights: • Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). • Reissner–Nordstrom de Sitter (RNdS) spacetime. • Massless charged particles. • Tunneling through cosmological horizon. • Tunneling of spin fields. In this paper, we investigate the massless Reissner–Nordstrom de Sitter metric in the context of minimal length scenarios. We prove not only the confinement of the energy density of massless charged particles, both fermions and bosons, but also their ability to tunnel through the cosmological horizon. These massless particles might be interacting with Dirac sea and in this case they will appear outside the cosmological horizon in the context of dS/CFT holography. This result may formulate a fundamental reason for the expansion of the Dirac sea. Therefore, a spacetime Big Crunch may occur.

W -boson exotic decay into three charged leptons at the LHC

We investigate the W boson’s exotic decay channel, W → ℓ ℓ ℓ ν , at the LHC. Although the four-body final states suppress the decay branching ratio, the large production of W bosons makes detecting and precisely measuring this decay probability entirely feasible. Our simulation study indicates that this tiny branching ratio can be measured with subpercent precision at the HL-LHC. This decay channel can also constrain Standard Model extensions. Using the L μ − L τ model as a benchmark, we find that the current bound on the gauge coupling for Z ′ mass in the range of [4, 75] GeV can significantly improve. Search for high-mass $Wγ$ and $Zγ$ resonances using hadronic $W/Z$ boson decays from 139 fb –1 of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for high-mass charged and neutral bosons decaying to $Wγ$ and $Zγ$ final states is presented in this paper. The analysis uses a data sample of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2 operation. The sensitivity of the search is determined using models of the production and decay of spin-1 charged bosons and spin-0/2 neutral bosons. The range of resonance masses explored extends from 1.0 TeV to 6.8 TeV. At these high resonance masses, it is beneficial to target the hadronic decays of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons because of their large branching fractions. The decay products of the high-momentum $W/Z$ bosons are strongly collimated and boosted-boson tagging techniques are employed to improve the sensitivity. No evidence of a signal above the Standard Model backgrounds is observed, and upper limits on the production cross-sections of these bosons times their branching fractions to $Wγ$ and $Zγ$ are derived for various boson production models.

Combination and summary of ATLAS dark matter searches interpreted in a 2HDM with a pseudo-scalar mediator using 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV $pp$ collision data

Results from a wide range of searches targeting different experimental signatures with and without missing transverse momentum ($E^{miss}_T$) ) are used to constrain a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) with an additional pseudo-scalar mediating the interaction between ordinary and dark matter (2HDM+a). The analyses use up to 139 fb -1 of proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during 2015–2018. The results from three of the most sensitive searches are combined statistically. These searches target signatures with large $E^{miss}_T$ and a leptonically decaying Z boson; large $E^{miss}_T$ and a Higgs boson decaying to bottom quarks; and production of charged Higgs bosons in final states with top and bottom quarks, respectively. Constraints are derived for several common and new benchmark scenarios in the 2HDM+a.

Modeling the pseudogap metallic state in cuprates: Quantum disordered pair density wave

We present a way to quantum-disorder a pair density wave and propose it to be a candidate of the effective low-energy description of the pseudogap metal which may reveal itself in a sufficiently high magnetic field that suppresses the d-wave pairing. The ground state we construct is a small-pocket Fermi liquid with a bosonic Mott insulator in the density-wave-enlarged unit cell. At low energy, the charge density is mainly carried by charge 2e bosons, which develop a small insulating gap. As an intermediate step, we discuss the quantum disordering of a fully gapped superconductor and its excitation spectrum. A simplified 1D model, which we solve numerically, is used to illustrate the introduced concepts. Here, we discuss a number of experimental consequences. The interplay between the electron and the small-gap boson results in a step-function background in the electron spectral function which may be consistent with existing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data. Optical excitation across the boson gap can explain the onset and the magnitude of the mid infrared absorption reported long ago.

Search for heavy Majorana or Dirac neutrinos and right-handed $W$ gauge bosons in final states with charged leptons and jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy right-handed Majorana or Dirac neutrinos N R and heavy right-handed gauge bosons W R is performed in events with energetic electrons or muons, with the same or opposite electric charge, and energetic jets. The search is carried out separately for topologies of clearly separated final-state products (“resolved” channel) and topologies with boosted final states with hadronic and/or leptonic products partially overlapping and reconstructed as a large-radius jet (“boosted” channel). The events are selected from pp collision data at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected by the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted within the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, and lower limits are set on masses in the heavy right handed W R boson and N R plane. The excluded region extends to about m(W R ) = 6.4 TeV for both Majorana and Dirac N R neutrinos at m(N R ) < 1 TeV. N R with masses of less than 3.5 (3.6) TeV are excluded in the electron (muon) channel at m(W R ) = 4.8 TeV for the Majorana neutrinos, and lim its of m(N R ) up to 3.6 TeV for m(W R ) = 5.2 (5.0) TeV in the electron (muon) channel are set for the Dirac neutrinos. These constitute the most stringent exclusion limits to date for the model considered.

Dark matter in the Alternative Left Right model

The Alternative Left-Right Model is an attractive variation of the usual Left-Right Symmetric Model because it avoids flavour-changing neutral currents, thus allowing the additional Higgs bosons in the model to be light. We show here that the model predicts several dark matter candidates naturally, through introduction of an R-parity similar to the one in supersymmetry, under which some of the new particles are odd, while all the SM particles are even. Dark matter candidates can be fermionic or bosonic. We present a comprehensive investigation of all possibilities. We analyze and restrict the parameter space where relic density, direct and indirect detection bounds are satisfied, and investigate the possibility of observing fermionic and bosonic dark matter signals at the LHC. Both the bosonic and fermionic candidates provide promising signals, the first in LHC at 300 fb -1 , the second at higher luminosity, 3000 fb -1 . Signals from bosonic candidates are indicative of the presence of exotic d' quarks, while fermionic candidates imply the existence of charged Higgs bosons, all with masses in the TeV region.

Search for vector-boson resonances decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark using $p p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a new massive charged gauge boson, $W'$, is performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The dataset used in this analysis was collected from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The reconstructed tb invariant mass is used to search for a $W'$ boson decaying into a top quark and a bottom quark. The result is interpreted in terms of a $W'$ boson with purely right-handed or left-handed chirality in a mass range of 0.5–6 TeV. Different values for the coupling of the $W'$ boson to the top and bottom quarks are considered, taking into account interference with single-top-quark production in the $s$-channel. No significant deviation from the background prediction is observed. The results are expressed as upper limits on the $W'$ → $tb$ production cross-section times branching ratio as a function of the $W'$-boson mass and in the plane of the coupling vs the $W'$-boson mass.

Search for new physics in the τ lepton plus missing transverse momentum final state in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) in the final state with a hadronically decaying tau lepton and a neutrino is presented. This analysis is based on data recorded by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{–1}$. The transverse mass spectrum is analyzed for the presence of new physics. No significant deviation from the SM prediction is observed. Limits are set on the production cross section of a W' boson decaying into a tau lepton and a neutrino. Lower limits are set on the mass of the sequential SM-like heavy charged vector boson and the mass of a quantum black hole. Upper limits are placed on the couplings of a new boson to the SM fermions. Constraints are put on a nonuniversal gauge interaction model and an effective field theory model. For the first time, upper limits on the cross section of t-channel leptoquark (LQ) exchange are presented. These limits are translated into exclusion limits on the LQ mass and on its coupling in the t-channel. The sensitivity of this analysis extends into the parameter space of LQ models that attempt to explain the anomalies observed in B meson decays. The limits presented for the various interpretations are the most stringent to date. Additionally, a model-independent limit is provided.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a single top quark and an energetic W boson in $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV $pp$ collisions with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a search for dark matter, $χ$, using events with a single top quark and an energetic W boson. The analysis is based on proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV during LHC Run 2 (2015–2018), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The search considers final states with zero or one charged lepton (electron or muon), at least one $b$-jet and large missing transverse momentum. In addition, a result from a previous search considering two-charged-lepton final states is included in the interpretation of the results. The data are found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and the results are interpreted in terms of 95% confidence-level exclusion limits in the context of a class of dark matter models involving an extended two Higgs-doublet sector together with a pseudoscalar mediator particle. The search is particularly sensitive to on-shell pro duction of the charged Higgs boson state, $H$ ± , arising from the two-Higgs-doublet mixing, and its semi-invisible decays via the mediator particle, $a$: $H$ ± → $W$ ± $a$(→ $χ$ $χ$). Signal models with $H$ ± masses up to 1.5 TeV and a masses up to 350 GeV are excluded assuming a tan $β$ value of 1. For masses of a of 150 (250) GeV, tan $β$ values up to 2 are excluded for $H$ ± masses between 200 (400) GeV and 1.5 TeV. Signals with tan $β$ values between 20 and 30 are excluded for $H$ ± masses between 500 and 800 GeV.

Measurement and interpretation of same-sign W boson pair production in association with two jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the measurement of fiducial and differential cross sections for both the inclusive and electroweak production of a same-sign W-boson pair in association with two jets (W ± W ± jj) using 139 fb –1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is performed by selecting two same-charge leptons, electron or muon, and at least two jets with large invariant mass and a large rapidity difference. The measured fiducial cross sections for electroweak and inclusive W ± W ± jj production are 2.92 ± 0.22 (stat.) ± 0.19 (syst.) fb and 3.38 ± 0.22 (stat.) ± 0.19 (syst.) fb, respectively, in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The measurements are used to constrain anomalous quartic gauge couplings by extracting 95% confidence level intervals on dimension-8 operators. A search for doubly charged Higgs bosons H ±± that are produced in vector-boson fusion processes and decay into a same-sign W boson pair is performed. The largest deviation from the Standard Model occurs for an H ±± mass near 450 GeV, with a global significance of 2.5 standard deviations.
