Microscopic investigation of the 8 Li(n,γ)Li 9 reaction

Background: The 8 Li (n, γ) 9 Li reaction plays an important role in several astrophysics scenarios. It cannot be measured directly and indirect experiments have so far provided only cross section limits. Theoretical predictions differ by an order of magnitude. Purpose: In this work we study the properties of 9 Li bound states and low-lying resonances and calculate the 8 Li(n, γ) 9 Li cross section within the no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) with chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions as input. Methods: Here, the NCSMC is an ab initio method applicable to light nuclei that provides a unified description of bound and scattering states well suited to calculate low-energy nuclear scattering and reactions. For the capture cross section calculation, we adjust calculated thresholds to experimental values. Results: Our calculations reproduce the experimentally known bound states as well as the lowest 5/2 – resonance of 9 Li. We predict a 3/2 – spin-parity assignment for the resonance observed at 5.38 MeV. In addition to the very narrow 7/2 – resonance corresponding presumably to the experimental 6.43 MeV state, we find several other broad low-lying resonances. Conclusions: Our calculated 8 Li(n, γ) 9 Li cross section is within the limits derived from the 1998 National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory Coulomb-dissociation experiment. However, it is higher than cross sections obtained in recent phenomenological studies. It is dominated by a direct E1 capture to the ground state with a resonant contribution at ≈ 0.2 MeV due to E2/M1 radiation enhanced by the 5/2 – resonance.

Light nuclei with semilocal momentum-space regularized chiral interactions up to third order

In this work, we present a systematic investigation of few-nucleon systems and light nuclei using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration interactions comprising semilocal momentum-space regularized two- and three-nucleon forces up to third chiral order (N 2 LO). Following our earlier study utilizing the coordinate-space regularized interactions, the two low-energy constants entering the three-body force are determined from the triton binding energy and the differential cross-section minimum in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Predictions are made for selected observables in elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering and in the deuteron breakup reactions, for properties of the A = 3 and A = 4 nuclei, and for spectra of p-shell nuclei up to A = 16. A comprehensive error analysis is performed including an estimation of correlated truncation uncertainties for nuclear spectra. The obtained predictions are generally found to agree with experimental data within errors. Similarly to the coordinate-space regularized chiral interactions at the same order, a systematic overbinding of heavier nuclei is observed, which sets in for A~10 and increases with A.

Nucleon-nucleon potentials from Δ-full chiral effective-field-theory and implications

We closely investigate NN potentials based upon the Δ-full version of chiral effective-field-theory. We find that recently constructed NN potentials of this kind, which (when applied together with three-nucleon forces) were presented as predicting accurate binding energies and radii for a range of nuclei from A = 16 to A = 132 and providing accurate equations of state for nuclear matter, yield a χ 2 /datum of 60 for the reproduction of the pp data below 100 MeV laboratory energy. This χ 2 is more than three times what the Hamada-Johnston potential of the year of 1962 achieved already some 60 years ago. We perceive this historical fact as concerning in view of the current emphasis on precision. We are able to trace the very large χ 2 as well as the apparent success of the potentials in nuclear structure to unrealistic predictions for P-wave states, in which the Δ-full next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) potentials are off by up to 40 times the NNLO truncation errors. In fact, we show that the worse the description of the P-wave states, the better the predictions in nuclear structure. Thus, these potentials cannot be seen as the solution to the outstanding problems in current microscopic nuclear structure physics.

Rigorous constraints on three-nucleon forces in chiral effective field theory from fast and accurate calculations of few-body observables

We explore the constraints on the three-nucleon force (3NF) of chiral effective field theory (χ EFT) that are provided by bound-state observables in the A = 3 and A = 4 sectors. Our statistically rigorous analysis incorporates experimental error, computational method uncertainty, and the uncertainty due to truncation of the χ EFT expansion at next-to-next-to-leading order. A consistent solution for the 3 H binding energy, the 4 He binding energy and radius, and the 3 H β-decay rate can only be obtained if χ EFT truncation errors are included in the analysis. Here, the β-decay rate is the only one of these that yields a nondegenerate constraint on the 3NF low-energy constants, which makes it crucial for the parameter estimation. We use eigenvector continuation for fast and accurate emulation of no-core shell model calculations of the few-nucleon observables. This facilitates sampling of the posterior probability distribution, allowing us to also determine the distributions of the parameters that quantify the truncation error. We find a χ EFT expansion parameter of Q = 0.33 ± 0.06 for these observables.

Effective shell-model interaction for nuclei “southeast” of 100 Sn

We construct an effective shell-model interaction for the valence space spanned by single-particle neutron and single-hole proton states in 100 Sn. Starting from chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces and single-reference coupled-cluster theory for 100 Sn we apply a second similarity transformation that decouples the valence space. The particle-particle components of the resulting effective interaction can be used in shell model calculations for neutron deficient tin isotopes. The hole-hole interaction can be used to calculate the N=50 isotones south of 100 Sn, and the full particle-hole interaction describes nuclei in the region southeast of 100 Sn. We compute low-lying excited states in selected nuclei southeast of 100 Sn, and find reasonable agreement with data. The presented techniques can also be applied to construct effective shell-model interactions for other regions of the nuclear chart.

Overview of symmetric nuclear matter properties from chiral interactions up to fourth order of the chiral expansion

We present and discuss predictions for a cross section of bulk and single-particle properties in symmetric nuclear matter based on recent high-quality nucleon-nucleon potentials at N 3 LO and including all subleading three-nucleon forces. We begin with the equation of state and its saturation properties and proceed to the single-nucleon potential. We also explore short-range correlations as seen through the defect function. The various predictions which we present have a common foundation in an internally consistent ab initio approach.

Radius and equation of state constraints from massive neutron stars and GW190814

Motivated by the unknown nature of the 2.50–2.67M⊙ compact object in the binary merger event GW190814, we study the maximum neutron star mass based on constraints from low-energy nuclear physics, neutron star tidal deformabilities from GW170817, and simultaneous mass-radius measurements of PSR J0030+045 from NICER. Our prior distribution is based on a combination of nuclear modeling valid in the vicinity of normal nuclear densities together with the assumption of a maximally stiff equation of state at high densities, a choice that enables us to probe the connection between observed heavy neutron stars and the transition density at which conventional nuclear physics models must break down. Here we demonstrate that a modification of the highly uncertain suprasaturation density equation of state beyond 2.64 times normal nuclear density is required in order for chiral effective field theory models to be consistent with current neutron star observations and the existence of 2.6M⊙ neutron stars. We also show that the existence of very massive neutron stars strongly impacts the radii of ≈ 2.0M⊙ neutron stars (but not necessarily the radii of 1.4 M⊙ neutron stars), which further motivates future NICER radius measurements of PSR J1614 – 2230 and PSR J0740+6620.

Elastic proton scattering off nonzero spin nuclei

In recent years, we constructed a microscopic optical potential (OP) for elastic nucleon-nucleus ( NA ) scattering using modern approaches based on chiral theories for the nucleon-nucleon ( NN ) interaction. The OP was derived at first order of the spectator expansion in Watson multiple scattering theory and its final expression was a folding integral between the NN t matrix and the nuclear density of the target. Two- and three-body forces are consistently included both in the target and in the projectile description. The purpose of this work is to apply our microscopic OP to nuclei characterized by a ground state of spin-parity quantum numbers J π ≠ 0 + . We extended our formalism to include the spin of the target nucleus. The full amplitudes of the NN reaction matrix are retained in the calculations starting from two- and three-body chiral forces. The microscopic OP can be applied in the energy range 100 ≤ E ≤ 350 MeV. Finally, we show a remarkable agreement with experimental data for the available observables and, simultaneously, provide reliable estimates for the theoretical uncertainties. This work paves the way toward a full microscopic approach to inelastic NA scattering, showing that the derivation of optical potentials between states with J π ≠ 0 + is completely under control.

Ab initio coupled-cluster calculations of ground and dipole excited states in He 8

We perform coupled-cluster calculations of ground- and dipole excited-state properties of the 8 He halo nucleus with nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory, both with and without explicit delta degrees of freedom. By increasing the precision in our coupled-cluster calculations via the inclusion of leading-order three-particle three-hole excitations in the cluster operator, we obtain a ground-state energy and a charge radius that are consistent with experiment, albeit with a slight underbinding. We also investigate the excited states induced by the electric dipole operator and present a discussion on the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn and cluster sum rules. Lastly, we compute the electric dipole polarizability, providing a theoretical benchmark for future experimental determinations that will study this exotic nucleus.

Constructing chiral effective field theory around unnatural leading-order interactions

A momentum-dependent formulation based on a stationary spin-0 and isospin-1 dibaryon field is proposed to improve convergence of chiral effective field theory in the 1 S 0 channel of NN scattering. Although the two-parameter leading-order interaction appears to be unnatural, it nevertheless has the necessary features of an effective field theory. A rapid order-by-order convergence is found in 1 S 0 . As an application beyond the two-body level, the triton binding energy is studied and compared to standard chiral effective field theory with partly perturbative pions. Here, the consistency of the chiral Lagrangian for the new formulation is examined by working out the pionic radiative corrections, and consequences of nontrivial chiral-connection terms are discussed.

Renormalization of one-pion exchange in chiral effective field theory for antinucleon-nucleon scattering

The renormalization of iterated one-pion exchange (OPE) is studied in Chiral Effective Field Theory ($\chi$EFT) for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\overline{N}N$) system. The OPE potential is cut off at a certain distance and contact interactions are represented by a complex spherical well with the same radius. We investigate the dependence on the cutoff radius of the phase shifts, inelasticities, and mixing angles for the low partial waves in $\overline{N}N$ scattering. We show that renormalization requires additional contact interactions compared to the expectation based on naive dimensional analysis. Results after renormalization are compared with the state-of-the-art energy-dependent partial-wave analysis of $\overline{N}N$ data. We compare our conclusions with applications of $\chi$EFT to the nucleon-nucleon system.

Next-to-leading order scalar contributions to 𝜇→𝑒 conversion

Within a class of models in which lepton flavor violation is induced dominantly by scalar particle exchanges, we estimate the 𝜇→𝑒 conversion rate in several nuclei. We include next-to-leading order (NLO) terms in the one- and two-nucleon interactions in chiral effective theory, rectifying some incorrect results in the previous literature. We provide an uncertainty budget for the conversion rates and we find that NLO contributions affect the amplitudes at the level of 10%, which could be larger than the uncertainty on the leading order couplings, dominated by the strange and nonstrange nucleon sigma terms. We study the implications of our results for testing Higgs-mediated charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) in the future by combining results from various experimental searches, such as 𝜇→𝑒 conversion in multiple target nuclei and 𝜇→𝑒⁢𝛾.

Two-pion exchange as a leading-order contribution in chiral effective field theory

Pion exchange is the central ingredient to nucleon-nucleon interactions used in nuclear structure calculations, and one-pion exchange (OPE) enters at leading order in chiral effective field theory. In the 2S+1 L J = 1 S 0 partial wave, however, OPE and a contact term needed for proper renormalization fail to produce the qualitative, and quantitative, features of the scattering phase shifts. Cutoff variation also revealed a surprisingly low breakdown momentum Λ b ≈ 330 MeV in this partial wave. Here we show that potentials consisting of OPE, two-pion exchange (TPE), and a single contact address these problems and yield accurate and renormalization group (RG) invariant phase shifts in the 1 S 0 partial wave. Here, we demonstrate that a leading-order potential with TPE can be systematically improved by adding a contact quadratic in momenta. For momentum cutoffs Λ ≲ 500 MeV, the removal of relevant physics from TPE loops needs to be compensated by additional contacts to keep RG invariance. Inclusion of the Δ isobar degree of freedom in the potential does not change the strong contributions of TPE.

Calculations of the $np→dγ$ reaction in chiral effective field theory

Here, we present a calculation of the radiative capture cross section of the $np→dγ$ reaction in the low-energy range, where the M⁢1 reaction channel dominates. Employing the LENPIC nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the fifth order (N4LO) that is regularized by the semilocal coordinate space regulators, we obtain the initial and final state wave functions, and evaluate the phase shifts of the scattering state and deuteron properties. We derive the transition operator from the chiral effective field theory up to the next-to-next-to leading order (N2LO), where we also regularize the transition operator using regulators consistent with those of the interactions. We compute the capture cross sections, and the results show a converging pattern with the chiral-order expansion of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, where the regulator dependence of the results is weak when higher-order nucleon-nucleon interactions are employed. We quantify the uncertainties of the cross-section results due to the chiral-order truncation. The chirally complete and consistent cross-section results are calculated up to N2LO and they compare well with the experiments and other theoretical predictions.

Nuclear properties with semilocal momentum-space regularized chiral interactions beyond N 2 LO

We present a comprehensive investigation of few-nucleon systems as well as light and medium-mass nuclei up to A = 48 using the current Low Energy Nuclear Physics International Collaboration two-nucleon interactions in combination with the third-order (N 2 LO) three-nucleon forces. To address the systematic overbinding of nuclei starting from A ≈ 10 found in our earlier study utilizing the N 2 LO two- and three-nucleon forces, we take into account higher-order corrections to the two-nucleon potentials up through fifth order in chiral effective field theory. Here, the resulting Hamiltonian can be completely determined using the A = 3 binding energies and selected nucleon-deuteron cross sections as input. It is then shown to predict other nucleon-deuteron scattering observables and spectra of light p-shell nuclei, for which a detailed correlated truncation error analysis is performed, in agreement with experimental data. Moreover, the predicted ground state energies of nuclei in the oxygen isotopic chain from 14 O to 26 O as well as 40 Ca and 48 Ca show a remarkably good agreement with experimental values, given that the Hamiltonian is fixed completely from the A ≤ 3 data, once the fourth-order (N 3 LO) corrections to the two-nucleon interactions are taken into account. On the other hand, the charge radii are found to be underpredicted by ≈10% for the oxygen isotopes and by almost 20% for 40 Ca and 48 Ca.

Ab initio nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering with chiral effective field theory uncertainties

Effective interactions for nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering from first principles require the use of the same nucleon-nucleon interaction in the structure and reaction calculations and a consistent treatment of the relevant operators at each order. Systematic investigations of the effect of truncation uncertainties of chiral nucleon-nucleon ( N N ) forces have been carried out for scattering observables in the two- and three-nucleons system as well as for bound-state properties of light nuclei. Here we extend this type of study to proton and neutron elastic scattering for 16 O and 12 C. Using the frameworks of the spectator expansion of multiple scattering theory as well as the no-core shell model, we employ one specific chiral interaction from the LENPIC collaboration and consistently calculate the leading-order effective nucleon-nucleus interaction up to the third chiral order, from which we extract elastic scattering observables. Then we apply pointwise as well as correlated uncertainty quantification for the estimation of the chiral truncation error. We calculate and analyze proton elastic scattering observables for 16 O and 12 C as well as neutron elastic scattering observables for 12 C between 65 and 185 MeV projectile kinetic energy. We find in all cases qualitatively similar results for the chiral truncation uncertainties as in few-body systems and assess them using similar diagnostic tools. The order-by-order convergence of the scattering observables for 16 O and 12 C is very reasonable around 100 MeV, while for higher energies the chiral expansion parameter becomes too large for convergence. Comparing proton and neutron differential cross sections reveals that their description is comparable up to around 100 MeV. Here, we also find a nearly perfect correlation between the differential cross section for neutron scattering and the N N Wolfenstein amplitudes for small momentum transfers. The diagnostic tools for studying order-by-order convergence in observables in few-body systems can be employed for observables in nucleon-nucleus scattering with only minor modifications provided the momentum scale in the problems is not too large. We also find that the chiral N N interaction on which our study is based gives a very good description of differential cross sections for 16 O and 12 C as low as 65-MeV projectile energy, particularly in the forward direction. In addition, the very forward direction of the neutron differential cross section mirrors the behavior of the N N interaction amazingly well.

Densities and momentum distributions in A ≤ 12 nuclei from chiral effective field theory interactions

Current and future electron and neutrino scattering experiments will be greatly aided by a better understanding of the role played by short-range correlations in nuclei. Two-body physics, including nucleon-nucleon correlations and two-body electroweak currents, is required to explain the body of experimental data for both static and dynamical nuclear properties. In this work, we focus on examining nucleon-nucleon correlations from a chiral effective field theory perspective and provide a comprehensive set of new variational Monte Carlo calculations of one- and two-body densities and momentum distributions based on the Norfolk many-body nuclear Hamiltonians for A ≤ 12 systems. Here, online access to detailed tables and figures is available.
