Measurement of coherent exclusive J/ψ → μ+μ− production in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.36 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The ATLAS experiment has performed a measurement of coherent exclusive J/ψ → μ+μ− production in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.36$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=5.36 $$ TeV. The data was recorded at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during 2023, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 79 μb−1. Exclusive J/ψ candidates were selected with a dedicated track-sensitive trigger based on the ATLAS transition radiation tracker. The analysis involves reconstruction of the dimuon invariant mass based on muon tracks from the inner detector, as the muon transverse momentum range of interest precludes the use of the standard muon reconstruction and identification algorithms. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of J/ψ rapidity and are compared with theoretical predictions. After extrapolation to sNN=5.02$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=5.02 $$ TeV, they are also compared with previous measurements performed by other experiments using data from LHC Run 2. While the results agree reasonably well with theoretical predictions, they are in tension with previous Run-2 results for the central rapidity region.

First measurement of coherent ρ 0 photoproduction in ultra-peripheral Xe–Xe collisions at s NN = 5.44 TeV

The first measurement of the coherent photoproduction of ρ 0 vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Xe–Xe collisions at s NN = 5.44 TeV is presented. This result, together with previous HERA γ p data and γ –Pb measurements from ALICE, describes the atomic number ( A ) dependence of this process, which is particularly sensitive to nuclear shadowing effects and to the approach to the black-disc limit of QCD at a semi-hard scale. The cross section of the Xe + Xe → ρ 0 + Xe + Xe process, measured at midrapidity through the decay channel ρ 0 → π + π – , is found to be d σ / d y = 131.5 ± 5.6 ( stat . ) – 16.9 + 17.5 ( syst . ) mb. The ratio of the continuum to resonant contributions for the production of pion pairs is also measured. In addition, the fraction of events accompanied by electromagnetic dissociation of either one or both colliding nuclei is reported. The dependence on A of cross section for the coherent ρ 0 photoproduction at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of the γA system of W γ A , n = 65 GeV is found to be consistent with a power-law behaviour σ ( γ A → ρ 0 A ) ∝ A α with a slope α = 0.96 ± 0.02 ( syst . ) . This slope signals important shadowing effects, but it is still far from the behaviour expected in the black-disc limit.

2D coherence imaging measurements of C 2+ ion temperatures in the divertor of Wendelstein 7-X

For the first time, 2D ion temperature values are derived from coherence imaging spectroscopy (CIS) fringe contrast measurements by taking Zeeman line broadening effects into account during the analysis procedure of a spatial-heterodyne CIS instrument. This allowed 2D images of C 2+ ion temperatures (T i ) across the 3D-shaped island divertor of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator. Ion temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 eV are observed for the C 2+ impurity species in the region above the divertor targets. During the transition from the attached to the detached plasma state, the C 2+ radiation zone moves from close to the divertor target towards the last closed flux surface. Within this radiation zone, C 2+ temperature does not decrease significantly. Experimentally, the coherence imaging measurements were cross-calibrated at one poloidal cross-section using a high resolution Echelle spectrometer, that shared its sightlines with the coherence imaging diagnostic. The spectra demonstrated that, apart from Doppler broadening, the Zeeman effect significantly contributes to the spectral line broadening and cannot be neglected when analyzing the CIS contrast data for T i extraction in the edge and scrape-off-layer of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), due to the relatively low temperatures (T i < 100 eV) and high magnetic fields (B ≈ 2.5 T).

First polarisation measurement of coherently photoproduced J/ ψ in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The first measurement of the polarisation of coherently photoproduced J/ψ mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions, using data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, is presented. The J/ψ meson is measured via its dimuon decay channel in the forward rapidity interval –4.0 < y < –2.5 using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. An event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 750 μb –1 ± 5% (syst) is analysed. Hadronic activity is highly suppressed since the interaction is mediated by a photon. The polar and azimuthal angle distributions of the decay muons are measured, and the polarisation parameters λ θ , λ φ , λ θφ , are extracted. The analysis is carried out in the helicity frame. The results are found to be consistent with a transversely polarised J/ψ. These values are compared with previous measurements by the H1 and ZEUS experiments. The polarisation parameters of coherent J/ψ photoproduction in Pb–Pb collisions are found to be consistent with the s-channel helicity conservation hypothesis.

Problems associated with the measurement of coherence parameters - Superelastic electron scattering by laser-excited Ba-138(...6s6p1P1) atoms

Measurements of superelastic scattering of electrons by laser-excited Ba-138(...6s6p1P1) atoms were carried out. An asymmetry observed has been explained using a model of scattering from a target with finite dimensions. This model employed coherence parameters which were calculated in the distorted-wave approximation. The results indicated that the interpretation of coherence experiments in terms of scattering from a pointlike target can lead to serious errors in the deduction of coherence parameters at low scattering angles.

Progress toward differential cross-section measurements of coherent charged-pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with SBND

Coherent charged pion production in charged-current muon neutrino–nucleus interactions provides a clean experimental signature and enables an excellent estimate of the neutrino energy, making it particularly valuable for neutrino flux constraints and oscillation analyses in future long-baseline experiments. Despite its importance, theoretical modeling of this process remains challenging, especially in the low-energy region below 1 GeV and its dependence on the nuclear target. The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) offers a unique opportunity to study coherent charged pion production using neutrinos in the few-hundred-MeV energy range from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) interacting with an argon target (A = 40), with unprecedented statistics expected to yield approximately three thousand signal events in SBND’s BNB data with 3.5 x 10^20 protons on target. This analysis aims to achieve the first differential cross-section measurement of charged-current coherent charged pion production on argon, as well as the first measurement of this process using BNB neutrinos.

Exploratory Analysis of Carbon Dioxide Levels, Ultrasound and Optical Coherence Tomography Measures of the Eye During ISS Missions

Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels on board the International Space Station (ISS) have typically averaged 2.3 to 5.3 mmHg, with large fluctuations occurring over periods of hours and days. CO2 has effects on cerebral vascular tone, resulting in vasodilation and alteration of cerebral blood flow (CBF). Increased CBF leads to elevated intracranial pressure (ICP), a factor leading to visual disturbances, headaches, and other central nervous system symptoms. Ultrasound of the optic nerve and optical coherence tomography (OCT) provide surrogate measurements of ICP; in-flight measurements of both were implemented as enhanced screening tools for the Visual Impairment/Intracranial Pressure (VIIP) syndrome. This analysis examines the relationships between ambient CO2 levels on ISS, ultrasound and OCT measures of the eye in an effort to understand how CO2 may possibly be associated with VIIP and to inform future analysis of in-flight VIIP data.

Measurement of coherent vibrational dynamics with X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy simultaneously at the Carbon K- and Chlorine L 2,3 - edges

X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy (XTAS) is a powerful probe for ultrafast molecular dynamics. The evolution of XTAS signal is controlled by the shapes of potential energy surfaces of the associated core-excited states, which are difficult to directly measure. Here, we study the vibrational dynamics of Raman activated CCl 4 with XTAS targeting the C 1s and Cl 2p electrons. The totally symmetric stretching mode leads to concerted elongation or contraction in bond lengths, which in turn induce an experimentally measurable red or blue shift in the X-ray absorption energies associated with inner-shell electron excitations to the valence antibonding levels. The ratios between slopes of different core-excited potential energy surfaces (CEPESs) thereby extracted agree very well with Restricted Open-Shell Kohn-Sham calculations. The other, asymmetric, modes do not measurably contribute to the XTAS signal. The results highlight the ability of XTAS to reveal coherent nuclear dynamics involving < 0.01 Å atomic displacements and also provide direct measurement of forces on CEPESs.

Airborne CO2 coherent lidar measurements of cloud backscatter and opacity over the ocean surface

The use of an airborne CO2 lidar to obtain cloud backscatter and extinction data at a thermal infrared wavelength is described. The extinction in this spectral region is proportional to the cloud liquid water content. The use of coherent detection results in high sensitivity and narrow field of view, the latter property greatly reducing multiple-scattering effects. Backscatter measurements in absolute units are obtained through a hard target calibration methodology. For clouds of low to moderate optical thickness at the lidar wavelength, both geometric thickness and optical thickness can be measured. The sea surface reflectance signal is used to obtain estimates of the cloud optical thickness. The utility of this technique results from studies that indicate that the spatial scale of variability of the sea surface reflectance is generally large compared with that of cloud optical thickness. Selected results are presented from data taken during flights over the Pacific Ocean.

Component and Circuit Performance Measurements for Coherent Radar - A Systems Perspective

A useful performance metric for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) radar systems is the Impulse Response (IPR). This is true for a fidelity metric for the signal channel, as well as a stability measure across multiple pulses. The IPR represents performance with respect to both amplitude and phase modulations of the transfer function for components, circuits, subassemblies, and even the looped radar hardware. The proper IPR performance specification limits will depend on radar operating mode. Generally, it will be the intersection of the strictest requirements.

Exploratory Analysis of Carbon Dioxide Levels, Ultrasound and Optical Coherence Tomography Measures of the Eye During ISS Missions

Enhanced screening for the Visual Impairment/Intracranial Pressure (VIIP) syndrome has been implemented to better characterize the ocular and vision changes observed in some long-duration crewmembers. This includes implementation of in-flight ultrasound in 2010 and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in 2013. Potential risk factors for VIIP include cardiovascular health, diet, anatomical and genetic factors, and environmental conditions. Carbon dioxide (CO2), a potent vasodilator, is chronically elevated on the International Space Station (ISS) relative to ambient levels on Earth, and is a plausible risk factor for VIIP. In an effort to understand the possible associations between CO2 and VIIP, this study explores the relationship of ambient CO2 levels on ISS compared to inflight ultrasound and OCT measures of the eye obtained from ISS crewmembers. CO2 measurements were aggregated from Operational Data Reduction Complex and Node 3 major constituent analyzers (MCAs) on ISS or from sensors located in the European Columbus module, as available. CO2 levels in the periods between each ultrasound and OCT session are summarized using timeseries metrics, including time-weighted means and variances. Partial least squares regression analyses are used to quantify the complex relationship between specific ultrasound and OCT measures and the CO2 metrics simulataneously. These analyses will enhance our understanding of the possible associations between CO2 levels and structural changes to the eye which will in turn inform future analysis of inflight VIIP data.

Lidar and Mission Parameter Trade Study of Space-Based Coherent Wind Measurement Centered on NASA's 2006 GWOS Wind Mission Study Parameters

The global measurement of vertical profiles of horizontal vector winds has been highly desired for many years by NASA, NOAA and the Integrated Program Office (IPO) implementing the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite Systems (NPOESS). Recently the global wind mission was one of 15 missions recommended to NASA by the first ever NRC Earth Sciences Decadal Survey. Since before 1978, the most promising method to make this space-based measurement has been pulsed Doppler lidar. The favored technology and technique has evolved over the years from obtaining line-of-sight (LOS) wind profiles from a single laser shot using pulsed CO2 gas laser technology to the current plans to use both a coherent-detection and direct-detection pulsed Doppler wind lidar systems with each lidar employing multiple shot accumulation to produce an LOS wind profile. The idea of using two lidars (hybrid concept) entails coherent detection using the NASA LaRC-developed pulsed 2-micron solid state laser technology, and direct detection using pulsed Nd:YAG laser technology tripled in frequency to 355 nm wavelength.

Sparse expansions of multicomponent oxide configuration energy using coherency and redundancy

We report that compressed sensing has become a widely accepted paradigm to construct high dimensional cluster expansion models used for statistical mechanical studies of atomic configuration in complex multicomponent crystalline materials. However, strict sampling requirements necessary to obtain minimal coherence measurements for compressed sensing to guarantee accurate estimation of model parameters are difficult and in some cases impossible to satisfy due to the inability of physical systems to access certain configurations. Nevertheless, the dependence of energy on atomic configuration can still be adequately learned without these strict requirements by using compressed sensing by way of coherent measurements using redundant function sets known as frames. We develop a particular frame constructed from the union of all occupancy-based cluster expansion basis sets. We illustrate how using this highly redundant frame yields sparse expansions of the configuration energy of complex oxide materials that are competitive and often surpass the prediction accuracy and sparsity of models obtained from standard cluster expansions.
