Gapped commensurate antiferromagnetic response in a strongly underdoped model cuprate superconductor

It is a distinct possibility that spin fluctuations are the pairing interactions in numerous unconventional superconductors. In the high-transition-temperature (high-T c ) cuprates, superconductivity emerges upon doping antiferromagnetic Mott insulators, and spin fluctuations might furthermore drive unusual pseudogap phenomena. Here we use magnetic neutron scattering to study the highly underdoped cuprate HgBa 2 CuO 4+δ (hole concentration p ≈ 0.064). In contrast to prior results for other underdoped cuprates, we find no evidence of incommensurate magnetic order associated with spin-density-wave or stripe correlations. Instead, the antiferromagnetic response in both the superconducting and pseudogap states is gapped below Δ AF ≈ 6 meV, commensurate over a wide energy range, and disperses above about 55 meV. Given the pristine nature of HgBa 2 CuO 4+δ , which exhibits high structural symmetry and minimal point disorder effects, this behavior likely signifies the unmasked response of the underlying CuO 2 planes near the Mott-insulating state. These results serve as a benchmark for a refined theoretical understanding of the cuprates.

Tuning commensurability in twisted van der Waals bilayers

Moiré superlattices based on van der Waals bilayers created at small twist angles lead to a long wavelength pattern with approximate translational symmetry. At large twist angles ( θ t ), moiré patterns are, in general, incommensurate except for a few discrete angles. Here we show that large-angle twisted bilayers offer distinctly different platforms. More specifically, by using twisted tungsten diselenide bilayers, we create the incommensurate dodecagon quasicrystals at θ t = 30° and the commensurate moiré crystals at θ t = 21.8° and 38.2°. Further, valley-resolved scanning tunnelling spectroscopy shows disparate behaviours between moiré crystals (with translational symmetry) and quasicrystals (with broken translational symmetry). In particular, the K valley shows rich electronic structures exemplified by the formation of mini-gaps near the valence band maximum. These discoveries demonstrate that bilayers with large twist angles offer a design platform to explore moiré physics beyond those formed with small twist angles.

Commensurate states and pattern switching via liquid crystal skyrmions trapped in a square lattice

Using continuum based simulations we show that a rich variety of skyrmion liquid crystal states can be realized in the presence of a periodic obstacle array. As a function of the number of skyrmions per obstacle we find hexagonal, square, dimer, trimer and quadrimer ordering, where the n-mer structures are a realization of a molecular crystal state of skyrmions. As a function of external field and obstacle radius we show that there are transitions between the different crystalline states as well as mixed and disordered structures. Here, we discuss how these states are related to commensurate effects seen in other systems, such as vortices in type-II superconductors and colloids interacting with two dimensional substrates.

Correlated insulating phases of twisted bilayer graphene at commensurate filling fractions: A Hartree-Fock study

Motivated by the recently observed insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene, we study the nature of the correlated insulating phases of the twisted bilayer graphene at commensurate filling fractions. Iin this work, we use the continuum model and project the Coulomb interaction onto the flat bands to study the ground states by using a Hartree-Fock approximation. In the absence of the hexagonal boron nitride substrate, the ground states are the intervalley coherence states at charge neutrality (filling $\textit{ν}$ = 0 , or four electrons per moiré cell) and at $\textit{ν}$ = –1/4 and –1/2 (three and two electrons per cell, respectively) and the $C_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry-broken state at $\textit{ν}$ = –3/4 (one electron per cell). The hexagonal boron nitride substrate drives the ground states at all $\textit{ν}$ into $C_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry broken-states. Our results provide good reference points for further study of the rich correlated physics in the twisted bilayer graphene.

Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic states in Ca Mn 2 As 2 and Sr Mn 2 As 2 revealed by As 75 NMR

Here, we carried out 75 As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the trigonal CaMn 2 As 2 and SrMn 2 As 2 insulators exhibiting antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states below Néel temperatures T N = 62 and 120 K, respectively. In the paramagnetic state above T N , typical quadrupolar-split 75 As NMR spectra were observed for both systems. The 75 As quadrupolar frequency ν Q for CaMn 2 As 2 decreases with decreasing temperature, while ν Q for SrMn 2 As 2 increases, showing an opposite temperature dependence. In the AFM state, the relatively sharp and distinct 75 As NMR lines were observed in SrMn 2 As 2 and the NMR spectra were shifted to lower fields for both magnetic fields H ∥ c axis and H ∥ a b plane, suggesting that the internal fields B int at the As site produced by the Mn ordered moments are nearly perpendicular to the external magnetic field direction. No obvious distribution of B int was observed in SrMn 2 As 2 , which clearly indicates a commensurate AFM state. In sharp contrast to SrMn 2 As 2 , broad and complex NMR spectra were observed in CaMn 2 As 2 in the AFM state, which clearly shows a distribution of B int at the As site, indicating an incommensurate state. From the analysis of the characteristic shape of the observed spectra, the AFM state of CaMn 2 As 2 was determined to be a two-dimensional incommensurate state where Mn ordered moments are aligned in the ab plane. A possible origin for the different AFM states in the systems was discussed. Both CaMn 2 As 2 and SrMn 2 As 2 show very large anisotropy in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T 1 in the paramagnetic state. 1/T 1 for H ∥ ab is much larger than that for H ∥ c, indicating strong anisotropic AFM spin fluctuations in both compounds.

Electronic commensuration of a spin moiré superlattice in a layered magnetic semimetal

Spin moiré superlattices (SMSs) have been proposed as a magnetic analog of crystallographic moiré systems and a source of electron minibands offering vector-field moiré tunability and Berry curvature effects. However, it has proven challenging to realize an SMS in which a large exchange coupling J is transmitted between conduction electrons and localized spins. Furthermore, most systems have carrier mean free paths l mfp shorter than their spin moiré lattice constant a spin , inhibiting miniband formation. Here, we discover that the layered magnetic semimetal EuAg 4 Sb 2 overcomes these challenges by forming an interface with J ~ 100 milli–electron volts transferred between a Eu triangular lattice and anionic Ag 2 Sb bilayers hosting a two-dimensional electron band in the ballistic regime (l mfp >> a spin ). The system realizes an SMS with a spin commensurate with the Fermi momentum, leading to a marked quenching of the transport response from miniband formation. Our findings demonstrate an approach to magnetically engineering moiré superlattices and a potential route to an emergent spin-driven quantum Hall state.

Commensurabilities of satellites' apsidal precession periods

The orientation of the major axis of Saturn's satellite Rhea librates about alignment with Titan's major axis. This behavior is a result of Titan's gravitational influence on Rhea. Similar effects may be important in the Uranian satellite system if they are enhanced by commensurabilities of apsidal precession periods. Extensive observations will be required if this possibility is to be confirmed. The effects of possible stable alignments have not been included in past analyses of the motions of Uranus' satellites, so the results of those studies should be accepted only tentatively.

Motion of the Jovian commensurability resonances and the character of the celestial mechanics in the asteroid zone - Implication for kinematics and structure

The motion of the Jovian commensurability resonances during the early evolution of the solar system induced by the dissipation of the accretion disk results in fundamental differences in the celestial mechanics of objects over which a resonance passes from that observed for a stationary resonance. Objects experiencing resonance passage acquire irreversible increases of average eccentricity to large values accounting for the present-day random velocities of the asteroids. Semi-major axes are similarly irreversibly decreased by amounts capable of clearing the Kirkwood gaps. The gap widths are in agreement with observation.

Commensurate states on incommensurate lattices

A simple one-dimensional model related to flux quantization on superconducting networks or charged particles on a substrate is proposed to investigate whether commensurate states can exist on incommensurate lattices. For both periodic and quasi-crystalline patterns, a set of low-energy states is found which is related to decimation symmetry and periodicity. It is suggested that the present quasi-periodic arrays which possess a decimation operation can be generalized to more-dimensional quasi-crystalline systems.

Tidal evolution of the Uranian satellites. I - Passage of Ariel and Umbriel through the 5:3 mean-motion commensurability

A significant chaotic zone is associated with the 5:3 mean-motion commensurability resonance through which Ariel and Umbriel would have passed, in the event that Uranus' specific dissipation function were less than 100,000; the standard theory for passage through orbital resonances would in this case be inapplicable, in view of significant changes in the probability and the mechanism of capture into the resonance. It is suggested that tidal evolution within the chaotic zone may have pushed eccentrocities to comparatively high values at which the probability of escape from resonance remained. Eccentricities sufficiently great to affect Ariel's thermal history have not been found.

2D Homologous Series SrFM n BiS n +2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n = 0, 1) and Commensurately Modulated Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2

In this work, we report three new mixed-anion two-dimensional (2D) compounds: SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 . Their structures as well as the parent compound SrFBiS 2 were refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, with the sequence of SrFBiS 2 , SrFPbBiS 3 , and SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 defining the new homologous series SrFM n BiS n+2 (M = Pb, Ag 0.5 Bi 0.5 ; n= 0, 1). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 has a different structure, which is modulated with a q vector of 1/3b* and was refined in superspace group X2/m(0 β 0)00 as well as in the 1x3x1 superstructure with space group C2/m (with similar results). Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 features hexagonal layers of alternating [Sr 2 F 2 ] 2+ and [Bi 2/3 S 2 ] 2- , and the modulated structure arises from the unique ordering pattern of Sr 2+ cations. SrFPbBiS 3 , SrFAg 0.5 Bi 1.5 S 3 , and Sr 2 F 2 Bi 2/3 S 2 are semiconductors with band gaps of 1.31, 1.21, and 1.85 eV, respectively. The latter compound exhibits room temperature red photoluminescence at ~ 700 nm.

Precise ${dd}$ excitations and commensurate intersite Coulomb interactions in the dissimilar cuprates YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7–y and La 2–x Sr x CuO 4

Using high-resolution extreme ultraviolet resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (EUVRIXS) spectroscopy at Cu M-edge, we observed the doping dependent spectral shifts of inter-orbital (${dd}$) excitations of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-y and La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 . With increasing hole doping level from undoped to optimally doped superconducting compositions, the leading edge of ${dd}$ excitations is found to shift towards lower energy loss in a roughly linear trend that is irrespective to the cuprate species. The magnitude of energy shift can be explained by including a 0.15 eV Coulomb attraction between Cu 3d(x 2 -y 2 ) electrons and the doped holes on the surrounding oxygens in the atomic multiplet calculations. Finally, the consistent energy shift between distinct cuprate families suggests that this inter-site Coulomb interaction energy scale is relatively material-independent, and provides an important reference point for understanding charge density wave phenomena in the cuprate phase diagram.
