Spatio-temporal and weather characterization of road loads of electrified heavy-duty commercial vehicles across U.S. interstate roads

Adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in heavy duty (HD) commercial freight transportation is difficult due to technological and economic hurdles. Beyond safety and compliance, fleet and operational logistics necessitate both high uptime and parity with diesel system productivity/Total Cost of Ownership to support widespread deployment of electric powertrains. However, relatively high energy storage costs, along with the higher weight of BEV systems, limit the viability of HD commercial freight transport to shorter-range applications where smaller batteries will serve for mission energy requirements (single operational shift). Knowing the energy consumption and operating variations of these commercial vehicle systems is crucial for effectively sizing the energy storage systems. This paper is the first in a series of studies to understand the regional specific operating design domain variations of commercial Class 8 HD trucks and the associated impact to their energy requirements. In particular, the local weather conditions are shown to influence the total vehicle energy usage. Further, the impact of temperature, pressure, and humidity changes are shown to impact the local air density. This is needed to calculate aerodynamic drag on vehicles and has been found to play a significant role in the overall performance of a vehicle. Although the methodology of calculating air density varies only slightly throughout the literature, the application to transportation has still been limited. This study provides a means by which air density can be estimated for the contiguous U.S. using the NOAA MADIS dataset. These air density estimates were then used to determine vehicle performance in varying regions of the country to highlight the importance of consideration of weather variables when monitoring vehicle performance, but also to provide recommendations based on these locales upon fleet conversion to BEVs.

Assessing Geospatial and Seasonal Influences on Energy and Cost-Efficiency of Drayage Trucks

The electrification of heavy-duty vehicles is a critical pathway toward improved energy efficiency in the freight sector. The current battery electric truck technology poses several challenges to commercial vehicle operations, such as limited driving range, sensitivity to climate conditions, and long recharging times. Estimating the energy consumption of heavy-duty electric trucks is crucial to assessing the feasibility of fleet electrification and its impact on the electric grid. This article focuses on developing a model-based simulation approach to predict and analyze the energy consumption of electric trucks by considering the impact of weather and geographical conditions on vehicle road load and auxiliary components power consumption, as well as the impact these factors have on driving range. Specifically, drayage trucks employed in logistics around maritime ports are used as a case study, with consideration of seasonal climate variations and geographical characteristics at different locations. The article includes results for three major container ports within the United States, providing region-specific insights into the energy requirements and driving range of the electric drayage trucks in these regions, which will inform decision-makers in integrating electric trucks into the existing drayage operations and plan investments for electric grid development.

(Invited) Fuel Cell Component Durability for Million Mile Fuel Cell Trucks

While significant advances have been made and early commercial fuel cell light-duty vehicles (LDVs) are starting to be produced, fuel cells in the heavy-duty-vehicle (HDV) transportation sector (including trucks, long-haul semitrailers, maritime, trains, etc.) are nascent, despite the fact that advantages of fuel cells compared to both diesel and electric powertrains are very compelling in terms of emissions, charging time, efficiency, power-to-weight ratio, among others. However, the fuel-cell technology for HDVs requires a paradigm shift in fuel-cell research and development compared to LDVs, where the emphasis becomes efficiency and improvements in durability instead of a focus on increased power densities and lower cell costs. Heavy-duty applications require significantly longer vehicle lifetimes (>25,000 hours/1,000,000 miles for heavy-duty trucks), and therefore require improved fuel cell durability compared to light-duty vehicles. In 2020, HFTO formed the Million Mile Fuel Cell Truck Consortium (M2FCT) that includes a core team of five national laboratories to overcome durability and efficiency challenges in PEMFCs for heavy-duty applications with an initial focus on long-haul trucks. While targets and testing protocols have been developed for light-duty vehicles, the same level of targets and testing protocols have not been established for heavy-duty transportation. With operational times of greater than > 25,000 hours required, the need for well-developed accelerated stress tests (ASTs) is amplified. Results from these ASTs demonstrate the need for more durable electrode layers and well-controlled potential variations. Finally, this presentation will provide an overview of the DOE's Fuel Cell R&D approach, highlighting past and current activities, as well as strategies to enable fuel cell competiveness for heavy-duty applications.

Satellite-aided mobile communications limited operational test in the trucking industry

An experiment with NASA's ATS-6 satellite, that demonstrates the practicality of satellite-aided land mobile communications is described. Satellite communications equipment for the experiment was designed so that it would be no more expensive, when mass produced, than conventional two-way mobile radio equipment. It embodied the operational features and convenience of present day mobile radios. Vehicle antennas 75 cm tall and 2 cm in diameter provided good commercial quality signals to and from trucks and jeeps. Operational applicability and usage data were gathered by installing the radio equipment in five long-haul tractor-trailer trucks and two Air Force search and rescue jeeps. Channel occupancy rates are reported. Air Force personnel found the satellite radio system extremely valuable in their search and rescue mission during maneuvers and actual rescue operations. Propagation data is subjectively analyzed and over 4 hours of random data is categorized and graded as to signal quality on a second by second basis. Trends in different topographic regions are reported. An overall communications reliability of 93% was observed despite low satellite elevation angles ranging from 9 to 24 degrees.
