Anion-induced disproportionation of Th( iii ) complexes to form Th( ii ) and Th( iv ) products

Here, a new synthesis of Th(II) complexes has been identified involving addition of simple MX salts (M = Li, Na, K; X = H, Cl, Me, N 3 ) to Cp" 3 Th III [Cp" = [C 5 H 3 (SiMe 3 ) 2 ] in the presence of 18-crown-6 or 2.2.2-cryptand, forming [M(chelate)][Cp" 3 Th II ] and Cp'' 3 Th IV X. Cp tet 3 Th III (Cp tet = C 5 Me 4 H) reacts with KH to form Cp tet 3 Th IV H and the C–H bond activation product, [K(crypt)]{[Cp tet 2 Th IV H[η 1 :η 5 -C 5 Me 3 H(CH 2 )]}.

Multi‐electron Oxidation of Ce(III) Complexes Facilitated by Redox‐Active Ligands

A family of cerium complexes featuring a redox-active ligand in different oxidation states has been synthesized, including the the iminosemiquinone (isq) 1− compound, Ce( dipp isq) 3 (1-Ceisq), and the amidophenolate (ap) 2− species Ce III ( dipp ap) 3 K 3 (2-Ceap), [Ce III ( dipp ap) 3 K][K(18-c-6)] 2 (2-Ceap 18c6), and [Ce III ( dipp ap) 3 K][K(15-c-5) 2 ] 2 (2-Ceap 15c5). Treating 2-Ceap 15c5 with dioxogen furnishes the cerium(IV) derivative [Ce IV ( dipp ap) 3 ][K(15-c-5) 2 ] 2 (3-Ceap 15c5), and an analogous synthesis can be used to generate [Ce IV ( dipp ap) 3 ][K(crypt)] 2 (3-Ceap crypt). Similarly, addition of hexamethyldisiloxane produces an interesting bis(amidophenolate) species, [(Me 3 SiO) 2 Ce IV ( dipp ap) 2 ][K(15-c-5) 2 ] 2 (4-CeOSiMe 3 ). In conclusion, full spectroscopic and structural characterization of each derivative was performed to establish the oxidation states of both the ligands and the cerium ions.

Unveiling the covalency of versatile Pu(iii)-N bonds in a unique plutonium(iii) complex

A trivalent plutonium–pyrazinyl–tetrazolate complex Na 2 [Pu(Hdtp)(dtp) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ]·9H 2 O (Pu_dtp, H 2 dtp = 2,3-di-1H-tetrazol-5-ylpyrazine) was synthesized through metathesis reaction of plutonium bromide and Na 2 (dtp)·2H 2 O in water. This structure is particularly notable among complexes formed by trivalent f-elements and the dtp 2− ligand in aqueous media. In contrast to other trivalent f-elements, including all Ln 3+ (with the exception of Pm 3+ ) and Cm 3+ , preferentially coordinated with eight water molecules rather than the nitrogen donors of the dtp 2− ligand, Pu 3+ exhibits a distinct affinity for nitrogen coordination. This observation provides strong evidence that the 5f electrons in Pu 3+ are more delocalized than other studied trivalent f-elements. In Pu_dtp, three distinct Pu(III)–N bonds are present: one Pu(III)–N5 from pyrazinyl, one Pu(III)–N4 from the least electronegative nitrogen in the tetrazolate, and three Pu(III)–N1/N2/N3 from the most electronegative nitrogens in the tetrazolate. Experimental Pu(III)–N bond lengths, Wiberg bond indices (WBI), natural localized molecular orbitals (NLMO), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and energy decomposition analysis (EDA), reveal a covalency trend: Pu(III)–N from the most electronegative nitrogen in tetrazolate > Pu(III)–N from the least electronegative nitrogen in tetrazolate > Pu(III)–N from pyrazinyl. This trend arises from the increased negative charge on the most electronegative nitrogen atoms in the tetrazolate ring, enhancing electrostatic Pu–N1/N2/N3 interactions. These stronger electrostatic interactions lead to shorter bond lengths, thereby enhancing orbital overlap and greater covalency, compared to the less electronegative nitrogen in tetrazolate (Pu–N4) and the neutral pyrazinyl nitrogen (Pu–N5).

A Third Generation Potentially Bifunctional Trithiol Chelate, Its nat,1XX Sb(III) Complex, and Selective Chelation of Radioantimony ( 119 Sb) from Its Sn Target

The therapeutic potential of the Meitner-Auger- and conversion-electron emitting radionuclide 119 Sb remains unexplored because of the difficulty of incorporating it into biologically targeted compounds. To address this challenge, we report the development of 119 Sb production from electroplated tin cyclotron targets and its complexation by a novel trithiol chelate. Here, the chelation reaction occurs in harsh solvent conditions even in the presence of large quantities of tin, which are necessary for production on small, low energy (16 MeV) cyclotrons. The 119 Sb-trithiol complex has high stability and can be purified by HPLC. The third generation trithiol chelate and the analogous stable nat Sb-trithiol compound were synthesized and characterized, including by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Multi-Spectroscopic Determination of Exchange Coupling, Zero-Field Splitting, and g-Matrices in Radical-Bridged Dinuclear Fe(III) Complexes

When the energy gap, Δ, between the lowest-lying spin manifolds within a spin-exchange coupled molecule approaches Δ/k B ≈ 300 K, the traditional temperature-dependence (T < 400 K) of the molar magnetic susceptibility is not always a reliable way to obtain a good estimate of intramolecular exchange couplings. We develop a spectroscopic approach capable of accurately parametrizing complex magnetic Hamiltonians by exploiting the separation of the anisotropy and exchange energy scales in strongly coupled magnetic molecules. Specifically, we combine inelastic neutron scattering, high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance, far-infrared magneto-spectroscopy and magnetometry, and obtain detailed information about the magnetic properties of a series of diiron complexes derived from [[Fe(cth)] 2 (dxbq)] 3+ (H 2 dxbq: 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (x = h) or 3,6-dichloro-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (x = c), cth: 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Well-isolated S = 9/2 ground states emerge due to strong direct antiferromagnetic exchange between the Fe 3+ centers (S = 5/2) and the radical bridging benzoquinone ligand (S = 1/2). The specific sensitivities and transition selection rules of the applied methods allow us to determine the parameters of the microscopic Hamiltonian including exchange coupling, fourth-order Stevens operators and g-factors. Our methodology is directly portable to other strongly coupled molecular compounds.

Multiscale investigations of europium(III) complexation with tetra- n -octyl diglycolamide confined in porous solid supports

The microscopic, short-range coordination environments and mesoscopic, long-range structures of Eu 3+ contacted with tetra-n-octyl diglycolamide (TODGA) confined on ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) nanoparticles and Amberchrom CG 71 resin were probed using Eu L 3 -edge extended X ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) as well as small-angle and wide-angle X ray scattering, SAXS and WAXS, respectively. A homoleptic Eu(TODGA) 3 3+ coordination complex typical of liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) chemistry is present under low Eu 3+ loading conditions on both solid supports. Deviations from this traditional structure motif appear at hyperstoichiometric Eu 3+ loadings, above the 1:3 Eu 3+ to TODGA mole ratio. Microcrystalline-like domains with multinuclear Eu speciation are templated by use of these high Eu 3+ loading conditions with the functionalized OMC materials, highlighting a major departure of liquid-solid extraction chromatography (EXC) from the coordination chemistry of LLE. No such long-range spatial coherence was observed for analogous polyacrylic resin materials. Furthermore, these results demonstrate both the similarities and differences between multiscale structures in LLE and EXC, underscoring the opportunities for improved separation techniques based on solid supports with long-range spatial coherence (e.g., OMC systems) and without it (e.g., resin materials). Since crystallization was the first approach to adjacent lanthanide separations, the prospect of templating microcrystalline TODGA-lanthanide complexes that are otherwise not prone to crystallization by use of OMC nanoparticles represents a new entry to addressing long-standing issues in purification by liquid-solid phase separation.

Aqueous-soluble bipyridine cobalt($\tiny{II}$/$\tiny{III}$) complexes act as direct redox mediators in photosystem I-based biophotovoltaic devices

Sustainable energy production is critical for meeting growing worldwide energy demands. Due to its stability and reduction potential, photosystem I (PSI) is attractive as the photosensitizer in biophotovoltaic devices. Herein, we characterize aqueous and organic solvent soluble synthetic bipyridine-based cobalt complexes as redox mediators for PSI-based biophotovoltaics applications. Cobalt-based complexes are not destructive to protein and have appropriate midpoint potentials for electron donation to PSI. We report on PSI stability in organic solvents commonly used in biophotovoltaics. We also show the effects of a mixed organic solvent phase on PSI reduction kinetics, slowing reduction rates approximately 8–38 fold as compared to fully aqueous systems, with implications for dye regeneration rates in PSI-based biophotovoltaics. Further, we show evidence of direct electron transfer from cobalt complexes to PSI. Finally, we report on photocurrent generation from Co mediator-PSI biophotovoltaic devices. Taken together, we discuss the development of novel Co complexes and our ability to fine-tune their characteristics via functional groups and counteranion choice to drive interaction with a biological electron acceptor on multiple levels from redox midpoints, spectral overlap, and solvent requirements, among others. This work suggests that fine-tuning of redox active species for interaction with a biological partner is possible for the creation and improvement of low cost, carbon-neutral energy production in the future.
