Use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf Parts with 3-D Printed Connectors for Powered Air Purifying Respirators

This report presents preliminary results from the performance evaluation of a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) assembled from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts. Cost is a major limiting factor to PAPR adoption in healthcare. Moreover, the lack of standardization for filters and batteries poses a challenge for clinics and hospitals. Rapid prototyping of connectors, both mechanical and electrical, offers a possible solution in addressing both issues. We used 3-D printed connectors to assemble COTS components into a prototype PAPR. Large-scale manufacturing of 3-D printed connectors may be accomplished by converting the computer-aided design (CAD) drawings to pressure-injection molds.

Interdigitated power connector

An electrical connector carries large amounts of electrical current between two circuit boards with low resistance and low self-inductance by means of an interdigitated anode and cathode, thereby providing low dynamic voltage loss. The connector also may include, near where power will be consumed, an interposer board with on-board capacitance to provide even lower dynamic voltage loss. The connector has application to delivering low-voltage, high-current power from a power supply on a first board to electronics on a second board: the low resistance provides low voltage drop for a load current that is constant, while the low inductance and the capacitors provide low voltage fluctuation for a load current that changes. These issues are of great importance, for example, in designing high-performance computers.

Polymers used in 4 mm PV Connectors [Slides]

Polymer cracks are not a new problem in the PV industry. However, the suddenness and severity of the cracking connector model is new and concerning. Some sites are experiencing wide-spread cracking of a specific connector model. The preliminary investigation results are (1) there are potential clearance issues with the O-ring, leading to high mechanical stress; (2) potential use of lubrication yields polymer embrittlement; and (3) clear mechanical or chemical differences between the affected model and other PPE-based models using FTIR and tensile testing could not be demonstrated.

Evaluations of Connectors, Inlets, and Adapters on Side-Load and Withstand Force

This report examines the mechanical forces that direct current fast charging (DCFC) electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) connectors and electric vehicle (EV) inlet ports experience during normal usage. As we witness the fast and growing variety of EVs, charge port locations, and bigger and more powerful EVSE configurations including the SAE J3400 North American Charging Standard (NACS), which has increased the use of adapters with J3400 and J1772 compatibility. These new conditions contribute to increased mechanical forces due to their size, weight and lever arm effect, which creates the need to study and compare these forces to the limits on UL2251 and IEC 62196-1 standards. This report focuses solely on high power DC charging EVSE connectors, EV inlets and adapters for the specific compatibility cases on J3400 with J1772. We first describe the details of the 100N and the 750N side-load evaluations as described in the standards, then present the data obtained by replicating these tests to finally go into more detail on the findings and our recommendations.

Low-Power, Flexible Sensor Arrays with Solderless Board-to-Board Connectors for Monitoring Soil Deformation and Temperature

Landslides are a global and frequent natural hazard, affecting many communities and infrastructure networks. Technological solutions are needed for long-term, large-scale condition monitoring of infrastructure earthworks or natural slopes. However, current instruments for slope stability monitoring are often costly, require a complex installation process and/or data processing schemes, or have poor resolution. Wireless sensor networks comprising low-power, low-cost sensors have been shown to be a crucial part of landslide early warning systems. Here, we present the development of a novel sensing approach that uses linear arrays of three-axis accelerometers for monitoring changes in sensor inclination, and thus the surrounding soil’s deformation. By combining these deformation measurements with depth-resolved temperature measurements, we can link our data to subsurface thermal–hydrological regimes where relevant. In this research, we present a configuration of cascaded I2C sensors that (i) have ultra-low power consumption and (ii) enable an adjustable probe length. From an electromechanical perspective, we developed a novel board-to-board connection method that enables narrow, semi-flexible sensor arrays and a streamlined assembly process. The low-cost connection method relies on a specific FR4 printed circuit board design that allows board-to-board press fitting without using electromechanical components or solder connections. The sensor assembly is placed in a thin, semi-flexible tube (inner diameter 6.35 mm) that is filled with an epoxy compound. The resulting sensor probe is connected to an AA-battery-powered data logger with wireless connectivity. We characterize the system’s electromechanical properties and investigate the accuracy of deformation measurements. Our experiments, performed with probes up to 1.8 m long, demonstrate long-term connector stability, as well as probe mechanical flexibility. Furthermore, our accuracy analysis indicates that deformation measurements can be performed with a 0.390 mm resolution and a 95% confidence interval of ±0.73 mm per meter of probe length. This research shows the suitability of low-cost accelerometer arrays for distributed soil stability monitoring. In comparison with emerging low-cost measurements of surface displacement, our approach provides depth-resolved deformation, which can inform about shallow sliding surfaces.

Low-Power, Flexible Sensor Arrays with Solderless Board-to-Board Connectors for Monitoring Soil Deformation and Temperature: Supporting Data

This dataset was used to assess the potential of a Soil Deformation and Temperature Monitoring System developed and presented in the article named "Low-Power, Flexible Sensor Arrays with Solderless Board-to-Board Connectors for Monitoring Soil Deformation and Temperature" and published in Sensors. There are 21 comma-delimited data files (.csv). 14 files contain current measurements performed in a lab setting, enabling the electrical evaluation of the sensor probe. These files are generated by the Keithley DMM6500 multimeter, and list the measured supply current (first column) as a function of time (3rd column). Another set of 6 files is also acquired in lab experiments, but contain soil temperature an deformation measurements, enabling an assessment of the developed device's accuracy. In these files, the first column contains the time (UTC), followed by the sensor's battery voltage and temperature and acceleration values (X, Y, Z) in subsequent columns. The measurements were acquired every 5 seconds. Another .csv file contains field data in a similar format (time, temperature, acceleration) collected at the Teller road (mile 27) site near Nome, Alaska with one probe. The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska. Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).
