Commissioning of an MPGD-based Drift Chamber for Heavy-ion Tracking in FRIB's Sweeper magnet system

A newly developed drift chamber equipped with an innovative hybrid Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector based readout was commissioned at FRIB. The detector consists of a Multi-layer Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (M-THGEM) mounted over a high-granularity, position-sensitive readout board. Denoted as the Micro-Pattern Drift Chamber (MPDC), the new device is used to provide tracking capability as part of the detectors of the Sweeper magnet system for neutron-invariant-mass spectrometry at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The localization of impinging ions in a 30 × 30 cm 2 drift area is derived by processing the charge-avalanche distribution induced on the segmented readout board. The signals induced on the readout pads are processed by a compact, multi-channel Data Acquisition System (DAQ) based on the Scalable Readout System (SRS). To facilitate synchronization with other detector systems of the Sweeper magnet system, the SRS has been configured to accept an external trigger.

Two-proton decay from α-cluster states in 10 C and 11 N

Two-proton decay from excited states in 10 C and 11 N has been characterized from an analysis of the 2p + 2α and 3p + 2α exit channels. Data from four previously published invariant-mass studies associated with inelastic excitation, multinucleon knockout, and neutron pickup reactions have been considered. A rotational band in 10 C was identified built on the second 0 + state which has strong α-cluster molecular structure. The members of this band were tentatively identified up to J π = 4 + and all identified states have a prompt 2p decay branch. The spins of the 0 + and 2 + members were deduced from comparisons of the momentum correlations in their 2p branches to those from known 2p emitters. The 2 + and the tentative 4 + members are both above the α threshold and exhibit large reduced decay widths for α emission. This band exhibits a similar moment of inertia to its analog in the mirror nucleus 10 Be. Evidence is also presented for a molecular band in 11 N built on the second 3/2 – state which 2p decays. Furthermore, tentative members of this band have been assigned up to J π = 9/2 – and their excitation energies also match their likely analogs in the mirror nucleus 11 Be.

Scalable Wind Turbine Generator Bearing Fault Prediction Using Machine Learning: A Case Study

Operation and maintenance (O&M) costs for wind turbines pose a risk to competitiveness and asset owners. With machine-learning technologies and digitalization rapidly maturing, the wind industry is actively investigating these new technologies to optimize O&M practices and reduce costs. This paper reviews recent work on machine-learning approaches to generator bearing failure prediction and presents a relevant real-world case study through a collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Envision Digital Corporation. In the case study, we evaluate the performance of representative machine-learning algorithms for predicting wind turbine generator bearing failures. Operational supervisory control and data acquisition data from one wind power plant was used to train and test the machine-learning models. The investigated data channels are chosen based on whether physically they reflect the failed generator bearing conditions and the component historical usage, including both environmental and operational conditions. Benefits and drawbacks of different methods are identified.

Investigation of Timing Properties for an Event Driven with Access and Reset Decoder Readout Architecture for a Pixel Array

The large number of data generating sources (data channels) on a single chip requires appropriate techniques to manage a readout from these channels. One of the main methods is sharing a medium of transmission, which requires arbitration to avoid collisions or deadlocks. Existing solutions face several problems such as a dead time, unintended prioritization or metastability. That is why we decided to create a new readout architecture named EDWARD i.e., Event Driven with Access and Reset Decoder. The EDWARD architecture gets rid of the earlier mentioned problems and mitigates the other ones. However, due to the use of logic circuits outside a standard cell library, which are hard to characterize, we were challenged to perform an additional transient analysis to validate the architecture. Here we show a methodology and the results of the simulations. Based on the results obtained we can confirm the functional correctness of the system and plan the optimization of operating conditions in order to achieve better performance. Our goal is to use the EDWARD architecture in the future radiation detectors to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Advancing Our Understanding of System Availability through the PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative

The PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative partners with photovoltaic (PV) fleet owners to collect time-series data of PV production data and publishes aggregated anonymized results of system performance metrics. With an extensive dataset drawn from over 2,200 PV systems across the United States, comprising 8.5 GW and 24,000 separate inverter data channels, this initiative aims to ensure that systemic risks in the US PV fleet are detected. The current work explores system availability, revealing a pronounced dependence on time, especially within the initial 6 months of system performance. Following this start-up period, the average system availability stabilizes. Statistical analyses illustrate a median (P5O) monthly availability of 0.991 and a dependence on system size with a negative trend in availability with increasing system size. This finding indicates that larger systems experience lower availability compared to their smaller counterparts.

One-way transfer device with secure reverse channel

A data diode provides a flexible device for collecting data from a data source and transmitting the data to a data destination using one-way data transmission across a main channel. On-board processing elements allow the data diode to identify automatically the type of connectivity provided to the data diode and configure the data diode to handle the identified type of connectivity. Either or both of the inbound and outbound side of the data diode may comprise one or both of wired and wireless communication interfaces. A secure reverse channel, separate from the main channel, allows carefully predetermined communications from the data destination to the data source.

An adaptive knowledge-based data-driven approach for turbulence modeling using ensemble learning technique under complex flow configuration: 3D PWR sub-channel with DNS data

This work describes a new approach to increase the accuracy of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) in modeling turbulence flow leveraging the machine learning technique. Traditionally, different turbulence models for Reynolds stress are developed for different flow patterns based on human knowledge. Each turbulence model has a certain application domain and prediction uncertainty. In recent years, with the rapid improvements of machine learning techniques, researchers start to develop an approach to compensate for the prediction discrepancy of traditional turbulence models with statistical models and data. However, the approach has deficiencies in several aspects. For example, the amount of human knowledge introduced to the statistical model couldn’t be controlled, which makes the statistical model learn from a very naïve stage and limits its application. In this work, a new approach is developed to address those deficiencies. Here, the new approach uses the “ensemble learning” technique to control the amount of human knowledge introduced into the statistical model. Therefore, the new approach could be adaptive to the multiple application domains. In conclusion, according to the results of case study, the new approach shows higher accuracy than both traditional turbulence models and the previous machine learning approach.

A framework for quantitative analysis of spectral data in two channels

Simultaneous acquisition of emission intensity from two channels in dual-color fluorescence measurements can be used to determine the spectral properties of an emitter. We detail a method to extract quantitative information from dual-color measurements by considering two models: a single spectral component model for peak wavelength determination and a dual spectral component model for relative strength determination. The former model is useful for spectral characterization and establishing heterogeneity within an emitter species, while the latter model is useful for analyzing energy transfer efficiency. Both models are formalized to yield probability distributions that reflect uncertainties due to shot noise. We applied these analysis tools to single-particle measurements of CdSe/CdS quantum dots. Isolated emitters had narrow spectral-intensity distributions that reflected their static emission profiles and fluorescence stability. Small assemblies of mixed donor/acceptor particles exhibited dynamic behavior where emission configuration changes reveal different spectral characteristics due to energy transfer.

A 20 Gbps Data Transmitting ASIC with PAM4 for Particle Physics Experiments

We present the design principle and test results of a data transmitting ASIC, GBS20, for particle physics experiments. The goal of GBS20 will be an ASIC that employs two serializers each from the 10.24 Gbps lpGBT SerDes, sharing the PLL also from lpGBT. A PAM4 encoder plus a VCSEL driver will be implemented in the same die to use the same clock system, eliminating the need of CDRs in the PAM4 encoder. This way the transmitter module, GBT20, developed using the GBS20 ASIC, will have the exact lpGBT data interface and transmission protocol, with an output up to 20.48 Gbps over one fiber. With PAM4 embedded FPGAs at the receiving end, GBT20 will halve the fibers needed in a system and better use the input bandwidth of the FPGA. A prototype, GBS20v0 is fabricated using a commercial 65 nm CMOS technology. This prototype has two serializers and a PAM4 encoder sharing the lpGBT PLL, but no user data input. An internal PRBS generator provides data to the serializers. GBS20v0 is tested barely up to 20.48 Gbps. With lessons learned from this prototype, we are designing the second prototype, GBS20v1, that will have 16 user data input channels each at 1.28 Gbps. We present the design concept of the GBS20 ASIC and the GBT20 module, the preliminary test results, and lessons learned from GBS20v0 and the design of GBS20v1 which will be not only a test chip but also a user chip with 16 input data channels.

Novel Hot Gas Components for Gas Turbine Engines Enabled by Materials and Additive Manufacturing Process Development

Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has emerged as a manufacturing method that enables new design freedom for gas turbine engine manufacturers. However, the material selection for AM processable high-temperature super alloys is currently limited. Additionally, the heat transfer performance of AM enabled micro-cooling architectures is not yet well understood. Accordingly, in support of advanced manufacturing and engine performance development, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)and Solar Turbines (Solar) conducted a multidisciplinary project to generate both AM super alloy material properties data and micro-channel performance data for two AM super alloys. The data supported the design and analysis of an internally cooled turbine hot section AM tip shoe component. This data was used to analytically predict the reduction in operating temperature of a gas turbine tip shoe. The work concluded that the cooling flow required to cool the tip shoe can be tuned to suit the efficiency improvements desired in an industrial gas turbine.
