Search for long-lived particles decaying into muon pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with a dedicated high-rate data stream

A search for long-lived particles decaying into muon pairs is performed using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb -1 . The data sets used in this search were collected with a dedicated dimuon trigger stream with low transverse momentum thresholds, recorded at high rate by retaining a reduced amount of information, in order to explore otherwise inaccessible phase space at low dimuon mass and nonzero displacement from the primary interaction vertex. No significant excess of events beyond the standard model expectation is found. Upper limits on branching fractions at 95% confidence level are set on a wide range of mass and lifetime hypotheses in beyond the standard model frameworks with the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of long-lived dark photons, or with a long-lived scalar resonance arising from a decay of a b hadron. The limits are the most stringent to date for substantial regions of the parameter space. These results can be also used to constrain models of displaced dimuons that are not explicitly considered in this paper.

CSEM, Bottomhole Pressure, Salinity, and Flow-Rate Data Collected in Sep. 2020 for Proj. DE-FE0031785

This dataset consists of two directories: first directory named as EM for the controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) survey data that are zipped per day for September 22, 23, 24, 25, and 27, 2020, and second directory named as "Bottomhole Pressure, Salinity, and Flow-Rate" for the simultaneous collection of bottomhole pressure and salinity and pump flow rate during the CSEM surveys.

A novel method may reveal bulk metallic glass compressive ductility trends in high data rate nanoindentation

Recent methods allow novel amorphous alloy compositions to be rapidly manufactured at small scale; however, obtaining materials properties such as compressive ductility from these smaller specimens has remained a challenge. Here, we suggest a potential high-throughput nanoindentation method that may be able to rapidly characterize the relative compressive ductility between these alloys based on their serration characteristics. The properties of emergent serrations, when interpreted in a simple micromechanical stress relaxation model, may order these materials by their compressive plastic strain to failure. These results are consistent with the ordering obtained from compressed specimens as well as with model simulations, suggesting that this model may be broadly useful for interpreting compressive ductility from nanoindentation serrations. After it is validated on more materials, this new method will match the rapid pace of amorphous alloy development, thus allowing metallic glass properties to be fine-tuned for each application prior to scale prototyping.

Dynamic Distribution of High-Rate Data Processing from CERN to Remote HPC Data Centers

The prompt reconstruction of the data recorded from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) detectors has always been addressed by dedicated resources at the CERN Tier-0. Such workloads come in spikes due to the nature of the operation of the accelerator and in special high load occasions experiments have commissioned methods to distribute (spill-over) a fraction of the load to sites outside CERN. The present work demonstrates a new way of supporting the Tier-0 environment by provisioning resources elastically for such spilled-over workflows onto the Piz Daint Supercomputer at CSCS. Furthermore, this is implemented using containers, tuning the existing batch scheduler and reinforcing the scratch file system, while still using standard Grid middleware. ATLAS, CMS and CSCS have jointly run selected prompt data reconstruction on up to several thousand cores on Piz Daint into a shared environment, thereby probing the viability of the CSCS high performance computer site as on demand extension of the CERN Tier-0, which could play a role in addressing the future LHC computing challenges for the high luminosity LHC.

Narrow-linewidth laser cooling for rapid production of low-temperature atoms for high data-rate quantum sensing

We present a proof-of-concept demonstration of a narrow linewidth $^{87}$Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating on the narrow linewidth $5S_{1/2}$ → $6P_{3/2}$ transition at 420 nm. We stabilized the absolute frequency of the 420 nm laser to an atomic transition in $^{87}$Rb and demonstrate a MOT using 420 nm light driving the $5S_{1/2}$, $F = 2$ → $6P_{3/2}, F' = 3$ transition. We then use tome-of-flight measurements to characterize the 420 nm MOT temperature, observing a minimum temperature of about $T^{(420)}_{horizontal}$ = 150μK and $T^{(420)}_{vertical}$ = 250μK before the opportunity to perform significant characterization and optimization. Although this temperature is significantly higher then the expected 420 nm Doppler cooling limit ($T_D^{(420)}$ ≈ 34 μK), these are already approaching the Doppler limit of a standard 780 nm MOT ($T_D^{(780)}$ ≈ 146 μK). We believe that with further optimization the Doppler cooling limit of ≈ 34 μK can be achieved. This initial result answers our key research question and demonstrates the viability of applying narrow linewidth laser cooling as a robust technique for future fieldable quantum sensors.

High Data Rate Detector for Neutron Reflectometer

Neutron reflectometers are a class of instruments that employ neutron diffraction for measuring the structure of thin films. The technique provides valuable information over a wide variety of scientific and technological applications including chemical aggregation, polymer and surfactant adsorption, structure of thin film magnetic systems, biological membranes, etc. Such instruments are considered to be one of the most important in the neutron science field. Newer facilities place growing demands on the count rate capability of the specialized neutron detectors required. Proportional Technologies completed the Phase I effort successfully with a fully operational prototype detector built at PTI and tested at the CG1A neutron beam of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR, Oak Ridge, TN). The prototype incorporated 3 panels of 14 copper-walled cells each (total of 42 cells), each lined with 1.3 μm of 10B4C. The detector was tested for efficiency, spatial resolution, count rate linearity, uniformity, overlap and scatter. Testing revealed stable operation, uniform response across cells, and successful resolution of individual cells. The maximum count rate tested in the 3 panels combined was 590 kHz, limited by a deadtime of about 1 μs in the digital electronics. The local rate measured in a single cell showed no deadtime losses up to 810 cps/mm2, indicating that a rate of 20 Mhz can be supported in the 308-cell detector planned for Phase II.

Apparatus and methods for managing packet transfer across a memory fabric physical layer interface

An apparatus and method for managing packet transfer between a memory fabric having a physical layer interface higher data rate than a data rate of a physical layer interface of another device, receives incoming packets from the memory fabric physical layer interface wherein at least some of the packets include different instruction types. The apparatus and method determine a packet type of the incoming packet received from the memory fabric physical layer interface and when the determined incoming packet type is of a type containing an atomic request, the method and apparatus prioritizes transfer of the incoming packet with the atomic request over other packet types of incoming packets, to memory access logic that accesses local memory within an apparatus.
