Constrained Inversion of a Microwave Snowpack Emission Model Using Dictionary Matching: Applications for GPM Satellite

This article presents a new algorithmic framework for multilayer inversion of the dense media radiative transfer (DMRT) equations of snowpack emission, with particular emphasis on the role of high-frequency microwave channels above 60 GHz. The approach relies on dictionary matching and locally constrained least squares. The results demonstrate that the algorithm can invert the DMRT model and retrieve depth, density, and grain size of a single-layer snowpack when dependencies of density and grain size on depth are properly accounted for. However, as the number of layers increases, the sensitivity of the inversion to observation noise grows markedly. Using observations, over the Great Plains in the United States, from the microwave imager onboard the global precipitation measurement (GPM, 10-166 GHz) core satellite, the initial results demonstrate that under a clear-sky condition and no vegetation canopy, the algorithm is capable to retrieve the snow depth and water equivalent of seasonal snow with a mean absolute error (MAE) of less than 0.15 m--when compared to the high-resolution analysis data from the SNOw Data Assimilation System (SNODAS).

Earth Observatory Satellite system definition study. Report no. 3: Design/cost tradeoff studies. Appendix A: EOS program WBS dictionary. Appendix B: EOS mission functional analysis

The work breakdown structure (WBS) dictionary for the Earth Observatory Satellite (EOS) is defined. The various elements of the EOS program are examined to include the aggregate of hardware, computer software, services, and data required to develop, produce, test, support, and operate the space vehicle and the companion ground data management system. A functional analysis of the EOS mission is developed. The operations for three typical EOS missions, Delta, Titan, and Shuttle launched are considered. The functions were determined for the top program elements, and the mission operations, function 2.0, was expanded to level one functions. Selection of ten level one functions for further analysis to level two and three functions were based on concern for the EOS operations and associated interfaces.

DOCU-TEXT: A tool before the data dictionary

DOCU-TEXT, a proprietary software package that aids in the production of documentation for a data processing organization and can be installed and operated only on IBM computers is discussed. In organizing information that ultimately will reside in a data dictionary, DOCU-TEXT proved to be a useful documentation tool in extracting information from existing production jobs, procedure libraries, system catalogs, control data sets and related files. DOCU-TEXT reads these files to derive data that is useful at the system level. The output of DOCU-TEXT is a series of user selectable reports. These reports can reflect the interactions within a single job stream, a complete system, or all the systems in an installation. Any single report, or group of reports, can be generated in an independent documentation pass.

Advanced transportation system study: Manned launch vehicle concepts for two way transportation system payloads to LEO. Work breakdown structure and work breakdown structure dictionary

The report describes the work breakdown structure (WBS) and its associated WBS dictionary for task area 1 of contract NAS8-39207, advanced transportation system studies (ATSS). This WBS format is consistent with the preliminary design level of detail employed by both task area 1 and task area 4 in the ATSS study and is intended to provide an estimating structure for parametric cost estimates.

Space transfer vehicle concepts and requirements study. Volume 3: Program cost estimates. Book 2: WBS and dictionary

This document describes the products and services to be developed, tested, produced, and operated for the Space Transfer Vehicle (STV) Program. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and WBS Dictionary are program management tools used to catalog, account by task, and summarize work packages of a space system program. The products or services to be delivered or accomplished during the STV C/D phase are the primary focus of this work breakdown structure document.

The GLAS Standard Data Products Specification-Data Dictionary, Version 1.0

The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) is the primary instrument for the ICESat (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite) laser altimetry mission. ICESat was the benchmark Earth Observing System (EOS) mission for measuring ice sheet mass balance, cloud and aerosol heights, as well as land topography and vegetation characteristics. From 2003 to 2009, the ICESat mission provided multi-year elevation data needed to determine ice sheet mass balance as well as cloud property information, especially for stratospheric clouds common over polar areas. It also provided topography and vegetation data around the globe, in addition to the polar-specific coverage over the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. This document contains the data dictionary for the GLAS standard data products. It details the parameters present on GLAS standard data products. Each parameter is defined with a short name, a long name, units on product, type of variable, a long description and products that contain it. The term standard data products refers to those EOS instrument data that are routinely generated for public distribution. These products are distributed by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSDIC).

Dictionary of Technical Terms for Aerospace Use

This volume attempts to define the meanings of selected terms in use in areas of activity of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The effort has been undertaken because exactness and precision are naturally most lacking in times of rapid language growth; and yet for scientists and engineers precision of meaning can have exceptional, even crucial, importance, as indeed it also can for contracting officers and management in general. But in one sense this book is almost certain to be imperfect. No set of definitions frozen in type can hope to capture the continuing change of living language.
