Manipulation of the orbital angular momentum of soft X-ray beams by consecutive diffractive optics

Production and manipulation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of coherent soft X-ray beams is demonstrated utilizing consecutive diffractive optics. OAM addition is observed upon passing the beam through consecutive fork gratings. Here, the OAM of the beam was found to be decoupled from its spin angular momentum (SAM). Practical implementation of angular momentum control by consecutive devices in the X-ray regime opens new experimental opportunities, such as direct measurement of the beam’s OAM without resorting to phase-sensitive techniques, including holography. OAM analyzers utilizing fork gratings can be used to characterize the beams produced by synchrotron and free electron lasers sources; they can also be used in scattering experiments.

Diffraction Measurement of Reaction Products in Shock Compressed TATB on the NIF

The shock-induced reaction of high explosives to gaseous and solid reaction products is a rapid, complex process. Understanding solid reaction product structure and formation kinetics is essential in determining the high-pressure equation of state of these multicomponent systems. We use the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to shock compress ~500-µm thick pressed powder high-explosive TATB samples to 70-135 GPa and collect in situ structural data on detonation byproducts using the TARDIS X-ray diffraction diagnostic. Velocimetry is used to record the transmitted compression wave profile, which is well described by Cheetah hydrocode simulations coupled with a reactive flow model, providing strong evidence of reaction in the TATB sample. While an unambiguous determination of the product phases was not possible owing to the low signal-to-noise quality of the diffraction signal, X-ray diffraction data of the product phases formed within the first 50 ns of the reaction is most consistent with a mixture of amorphous products and crystalline hexagonal diamond.

Spin-spin entanglement in diffractive heavy-quark production

We calculate the spin density matrix of a heavy-quark-antiquark pair ($b\bar{⁢b}$, $c\bar{⁢c}$ or $s\bar{⁢s}$) diffractively produced in deep inelastic scattering and ultraperipheral collisions. We show that the Pomeron exchange leaves characteristic imprints on the entanglement pattern between the quark and the antiquark. For the longitudinally polarized virtual photon, the pair always exhibits maximal entanglement and maximal violation of the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality. For the transversely polarized photon, the pair is always entangled and Bell violating, reaching maximal entanglement and maximal violation simultaneously when the transverse momentum approximately equals the quark mass.

Observation of Exotic 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜙 Resonant Structure in Diffractive Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions

The first study of 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜙 production in diffractive processes in proton-proton collisions is presented. The study is based on an LHCb dataset recorded at center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb −1 . The data disfavor a nonresonant 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜙 production but are consistent with a resonant model including several resonant states observed previously only in 𝐵 + →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜙⁢𝐾 + decays. The 𝜒 𝑐⁢0⁡ (4500) state is observed with a significance over 6⁢𝜎 and the 𝜒 𝑐⁢1 ⁡(4274) is confirmed with a significance of more than 4⁢𝜎.

True molecular conformation and structure determination by three-dimensional electron diffraction of PAH by-products potentially useful for electronic applications

The true molecular conformation and the crystal structure of benzo[e]dinaphtho[2,3-a;1',2',3',4'-ghi]fluoranthene, 7,14-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]bisanthene and 7,16-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]helianthrene were determined ab initio by 3D electron diffraction. All three molecules are remarkable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The molecular conformation of two of these compounds could not be determined via classical spectroscopic methods due to the large size of the molecule and the occurrence of multiple and reciprocally connected aromatic rings. The molecular structure of the third molecule was previously considered provisional. These compounds were isolated as by-products in the synthesis of similar products and were at the same time nanocrystalline and available only in very limited amounts. 3D electron diffraction data, taken from submicrometric single crystals, allowed for direct ab initio structure solution and the unbiased determination of the internal molecular conformation. Detailed synthetic routes and spectroscopic analyses are also discussed. Based on many-body perturbation theory simulations, benzo[e]dinaphtho[2,3-a;1',2',3',4'-ghi]fluoranthene may be a promising candidate for triplet–triplet annihilation and 7,14-diphenylnaphtho[1,2,3,4-cde]bisanthene may be a promising candidate for intermolecular singlet fission in the solid state.

Broadband unidirectional visible imaging using wafer-scale nano-fabrication of multi-layer diffractive optical processors

We present a broadband and polarization-insensitive unidirectional imager that operates at the visible part of the spectrum, where image formation occurs in one direction, while in the opposite direction, it is blocked. This approach is enabled by deep learning-driven diffractive optical design with wafer-scale nano-fabrication using high-purity fused silica to ensure optical transparency and thermal stability. Our design achieves unidirectional imaging across three visible wavelengths (covering red, green, and blue parts of the spectrum), and we experimentally validated this broadband unidirectional imager by creating high-fidelity images in the forward direction and generating weak, distorted output patterns in the backward direction, in alignment with our numerical simulations. This work demonstrates wafer-scale production of diffractive optical processors, featuring 16 levels of nanoscale phase features distributed across two axially aligned diffractive layers for visible unidirectional imaging. This approach facilitates mass-scale production of ~0.5 billion nanoscale phase features per wafer, supporting high-throughput manufacturing of hundreds to thousands of multi-layer diffractive processors suitable for large apertures and parallel processing of multiple tasks. Beyond broadband unidirectional imaging in the visible spectrum, this study establishes a pathway for artificial-intelligence-enabled diffractive optics with versatile applications, signaling a new era in optical device functionality with industrial-level, massively scalable fabrication.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons at the MINER$\nu$A detector

Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) are particles hypothesised to provide a mass generation mechanism for the active (observed) neutrino species, which are known to have nonzero mass from the definitive observation of neutrino oscillations. HNL are eigenstates of mass of the order $\mathcal{O}(0.1 − 1\,\,\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2})$, which mix into the active flavour eigenstates through the extended leptonic mixing matrix. Apart from neutrino mass, they could provide a natural dark matter candidate and a mechanism for matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early Universe, giving rise to today’s matter-dominated cosmos. Searches for HNL typically attempt to either confirm the existence of HNL through an excess in data that is most compatible with an HNL hypothesis, or by setting limits on the HNL parameter space $\left(M_{N4}, \left|U_{\alpha 4}\right|^{2}\right)$ in the case of statistically insignificant excess. Such searches are intensifying as part of a global research programme at both colliders and accelerator / atmospheric neutrino experiments. One such setting is the MINER$\nu$A experiment, located in the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. MINER$\nu$A has collected a large amount of data over seven years of operation to measure the cross-sections of neutrino-nucleus interactions necessary to drive systematic uncertainties down, in order for neutrino oscillation experiments to achieve sensitivity to CP violation in the neutrino sector. With the high-energy, high-intensity NuMI beam, and with good timing, position, and angular resolution leading to sensitivity to HNL decays, MINER$\nu$A is fertile ground for an HNL search, which is performed in this thesis. Specifically, a novel, experiment-agnostic and general simulation of HNL production and decay is presented and deployed; this simulation has been incorporated in the ubiquitous GENIE neutrino event generator for use with neutrino experiments in the future. The event selection and background characterisation is discussed in detail, including the primary background coming from charged-current coherent and diffractive pion production from neutrino-nucleus interactions, and constraints on the background using control regions from MINER$\nu$A data are derived. Finally, by means of a fake-data study given a background of $\mathcal{O}(500)$ events, the discovery potential and limit-setting capacity of MINER$\nu$A is demonstrated, and ways to improve this capacity are expounded upon.

Hadronic interaction model sibyll 2.3d and extensive air showers

We present a new version of the hadron interaction event generator SIBYLL. While the core ideas of the model have been preserved, the new version handles the production of baryon pairs and leading particles in a new way. In addition, production of charmed hadrons is included. Updates to the model are informed by high-precision measurements of the total and inelastic cross sections with the forward detectors at the LHC that constrain the extrapolation to ultrahigh energy. Minimum-bias measurements of particle spectra and multiplicities support the tuning of fragmentation parameters. This paper demonstrates the impact of these changes on air-shower observables such as X max and N μ , drawing comparisons with other contemporary cosmic-ray interaction models.

Inclusive prompt photon-jet correlations as a probe of gluon saturation in electron-nucleus scattering at small x

We compute the differential cross-section for inclusive prompt photon+quark production in deeply inelastic scattering of electrons off nuclei at small x (e + A DIS) in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. The result is expressed as a convolution of the leading order (in the strong coupling α s ) impact factor for the process and universal dipole matrix elements, in the limit of hard photon transverse momentum relative to the nuclear saturation scale Q s,A (x). We perform a numerical study of this process for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), exploring in particular the azimuthal angle correlations between the final state photon and quark. We observe a systematic suppression and broadening pattern of the back-to-back peak in the relative azimuthal angle distribution, as the saturation scale is increased by replacing proton targets with gold nuclei. Our results suggest that photon+jet final states in inclusive e + A DIS at high energies are in general a promising channel for exploring gluon saturation that is complementary to inclusive and diffractive dijet production. They also provide a sensitive empirical test of the universality of dipole matrix elements when compared to identical measurements in proton-nucleus collisions. However because photon+jet correlations at small x in EIC kinematics require jet reconstruction at small k ⊥ , it will be important to study their feasibility relative to photon-hadron correlations.

Dynamical model of φ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and 4 He

We investigate φ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and the 4 He targets within a dynamical model approach based on a Hamiltonian which describes the production mechanisms by the Pomeron-exchange, meson-exchanges, φ radiations, and nucleon resonance excitations mechanisms. The final φN interactions are included being described by the gluon-exchange, direct φN couplings, and the box-diagrams arising from the couplings with πN, ρN, KΛ, and KΣ channels. The parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined by the experimental data of γp → φp from the CLAS Collaboration. The resulting Hamiltonian is then used to predict the coherent φ-meson production on the 4 He targets by using the distorted-wave impulse approximation. For the proton target, the final φN rescattering effects, as required by the unitarity condition, are found to be very weak, which supports the earlier calculations in the literature. For the 4 He targets, the predicted differential cross sections are in good agreement with the data obtained by the LEPS Collaboration. Furthermore, the role of each mechanism in this reaction is discussed and predictions for a wide range of scattering angles are presented, which can be tested in future experiments.

Off forward non- s -channel helicity conserving contributions to exclusive vector quarkonium production from the spin dependent BFKL Pomeron

A novel contribution to off forward, exclusive vector quarkonium production, γ(*)+p → V+p, at high energy is derived which corresponds to a t-channel exchange of a Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) hard Pomeron, with a helicity flip of the proton. This “spin-dependent BFKL Pomeron” is required in a consistent expansion in powers of the momentum transfer t ≈−Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$ beyond first order. The spin-dependent Pomeron violates s-channel helicity conservation at O(Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$), and beyond. Expanding to leading twist only, it corresponds to generalized parton distributions E g (x,t) for vanishing skewness. We derive explicit expressions for the eikonal BFKL amplitudes, to all orders in dipole size times momentum transfer, for all helicity configurations of the particles in the initial and final states. We also provide numerical estimates of the helicity flip two gluon exchange amplitude at moderate x from a light cone quark model of the proton. The spin dependent BFKL Pomeron could, in principle, be discovered via double spin asymmetries in e+p → e+p+J/ψ with a transversely polarized proton and longitudinally polarized electron in the initial state.

Properties and microstructure evolution of silicon nitride and zirconium nitride following Ni ion irradiation

We report that silicon nitride and zirconium nitride have been proposed as potential materials for multiple nuclear applications (inert matrix fuels, accident tolerant fuels, space nuclear power, fusion reactor design), yet knowledge on their behavior under irradiation remains limited. Ion irradiations were performed using 15 MeV Ni 5+ ions on Si 3 N 4 and ZrN samples, with midrange doses (around 3 µm) from 1 to 50 dpa and temperatures from 300 to 700°C. Volumetric lattice swelling was determined by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, defect production and evolution were tracked using Transmission Electron Microscopy, and nanoindentation was performed to quantify the ceramics’ mechanical properties evolution. The results from these irradiation studies on nitride ceramics help fill the current gap present in the literature. Behavior consistent with past work on irradiated Si 3 N 4 was observed with respect to mechanical properties and defect formation up to 15 dpa and 500°C. Failure of the grain boundary sintering aid in Si 3 N 4 was observed above these conditions. Different behavior was observed in both nitrides at 50 dpa and 700°C, where lattice swelling increased past potential saturation values. Unreported cavity formation was witnessed in both materials under all irradiation conditions, with stable number density and slight size increase above 15 dpa. The mechanism for the cavity formation remains to be determined.

Projective imaging of high-energy nuclei via coherent exclusive vector meson production in electron-nucleus collisions

One of the major goals of modern nuclear experiments is to study the distributions of gluons inside nuclei at high energy. A key measurement is the coherent exclusive vector meson (VM) production in diffractive electron-nucleus collisions, where the gluon spatial distribution inside the nucleus can be obtained through a Fourier transform of the squared nuclear momentum transfer (|t|) distribution. This research aims to overcome the two main obstacles of the |t| measurement: limited precision in measuring |t| arising from the momentum resolution of the outgoing electron and the overwhelming incoherent background. We demonstrate that by measuring the projected |t| distribution along the direction perpendicular to the electron scattering plane, the effect of the outgoing electron’s momentum resolution can be effectively mitigated, and the diffractive pattern is largely restored. Furthermore, we propose to measure the angular distribution of the VM’s decay daughters to statistically remove the incoherent background.
