Charge transfer in mixed and segregated stacks of tetrathiafulvalene, tetrathianaphthalene and naphthalene diimide: a structural, spectroscopic and computational study

Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) is a highly tunable electron donor that has been widely studied in charge transfer (CT) complexes, including Bechgaard salts which are superconductors at low temperatures. Its close relative, tetrathianaphthalene (TTN) has received considerably less attention than its TTF counterpart but is potentially a versatile electron donor. Three novel CT complexes containing mixed and segregated stack donor-acceptor (D–A) complexes of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), tetrathianaphthalene (TTN) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) are reported. We demonstrate a facile mechanochemical synthesis of two salts, TTF–DPNI and TTN–DPNI (DPNI = N,N'-di-(4-pyridyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxydiimide), which is uncommon for these materials. Despite the detection of a very low partial charge transfer in the three salts using UV-Vis-NIR, Raman and EPR spectroscopies, we elucidated the properties of the TTN core with support from DFT calculations for the first time. Finally, we highlight the performance of TTN in a CT complex and demonstrate the importance of a combined approach to the characterisation of CT in organic D–A complexes.

Incorporating a naphthalene diimide polymer into a fullerene electron-transport layer to improve the fracture energy of perovskite solar cells

By blending a naphthalene diimide polymer into C 60 , we made a solution-processed electron-transport layer (ETL) for perovskite solar cells with fracture energies of 1.25 J m −2 , over 3× higher than that of thermally evaporated C 60 . Fracture energies were measured in a double cantilever beam configuration, and fracture surface images showed a fracture location near the ETL/perovskite interface, indicating a toughening of the interface between the ETL and Ag. We show that this modification to the ETL has no adverse effect on solar cell performance, and highlight the additional benefit of reduced parasitic absorption; a finding relevant for tandem solar cells.

Influence of solution phase environmental heterogeneity and fluctuations on vibronic spectra: Perylene diimide molecular chromophore complexes in solution

Ensembles of ab initio parameterized Frenkel-exciton model Hamiltonians for different perylene diimide dimer systems are used, together with various dissipative quantum dynamics approaches, to study the influence of the solvation environment and fluctuations in chromophore relative orientation and packing on the vibronic spectra of two different dimer systems: a π-stacked dimer in aqueous solution in which the relative chromophore geometry is strongly confined by a phosphate bridge and a side-by-side dimer in dichloromethane involving a more flexible alkyne bridge that allows quasi-free rotation of the chromophores relative to one another. These entirely first-principles calculations are found to accurately reproduce the main features of the experimental absorption spectra, providing a detailed mechanistic understanding of how the structural fluctuations and environmental interactions influence the vibronic dynamics and spectroscopy of solutions of these multi-chromophore complexes.

Photo-Crosslinkable Naphthalene Diimide Polymer for Solution Processed n-i-p Perovskite Solar cells

Lead-halide perovskite has attracted tremendous attention due to its extraordinary optoelectronic properties.1 Charge transport layers play an important role in both solar cell device efficiency and long-term stability.2 Here we used a photo-crosslinkable polymer for n-i-p perovskite solar cells. Compared to the non-crosslinkable counterpart, we see an overall improved open-circuit voltage and efficiency in mixed-cation mixed-halide perovskite solar cell using the crosslinked naphthalene diimide polymer (NDI-CL) as cathode modification layer.

A naphthalene diimide side-chain polymer as an electron-extraction layer for stable perovskite solar cells

Poly(N-(5-(5-norbornene-2-carbonyl)oxy)pentyl)-N'-n-hexyl-naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide) has been synthesized by esterification of (N-(5-hydroxypentyl)-N'-n-hexyl-naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide)) with exo-5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid, and has been polymerized using the first-generation Grubbs initiator. This side-chain polymer exhibits good transparency throughout the visible (absorption onset at ca. 400 nm), good solubility in common low- and medium-polarity organic solvents, good resistance to dimethylformamide, and appropriate electron affinity for use as an electron-extraction layer in lead-halide perovskite solar cells. The performance of this polymer in n-i-p perovskite solar cells was compared to that of several small-molecule naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide) derivatives and of SnO 2 . Solar cells using the polymer exhibited open-circuit voltages of up to 1.02 V, short-circuit currents of over 21 mA cm –2 , and power conversion efficiencies (PCE) reaching 14% which stabilize at 13.8% upon 90 s of illumination. Meanwhile control SnO 2 devices exhibited a PCE of ca. 16%, and small-molecule devices gave PCE values of less than 10%. Here, the devices employing the polymer exhibited improved long-term stability relative to the SnO 2 control devices under continuous illumination.

Intrachain Electron Transport in a Naphthalene Diimide–Bithiophene Copolymer: A Mixed-Valence Approach

The mechanism of electron transport in the polymer P(NDI2OD-T2) (poly(N,N'-bis-2-octyldodecylnaphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis-dicarboximide-2,6-diyl-alt-2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-diyl), N2200) is investigated. Here, we use spectroelectrochemical measurements on P(NDI2OD-T2), spectroscopic studies of a chemically reduced model compound, 2,2'-(2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-diyl)-bis(N,N'-di-n-hexylnaphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide)) (NDI-T2-NDI), and electronic structure calculations to evaluate the microscopic charge-transport parameters. Experimental and computational data suggest that NDI-T2-NDI•– is a class-II mixed-valence compound, strongly supporting the small-polaron hopping model as a charge-transport mechanism for electrons along polymer chains in P(NDI2OD-T2). The electronic coupling between the NDI redox units is at least 21 meV, while the reorganization energy is between 0.45 and 0.56 eV. Using a hopping model, we estimated the mobility and activation energy for electron transport along P(NDI2OD-T2) polymer chains to be 0.15 cm 2 V –1 s –1 and 60 meV, respectively. Our study elucidates a long-standing issue of explaining the coexistence in P(NDI2OD-T2) of localized redox sites with relatively large electron mobilities more usually achieved only in highly conjugated polymers.

Nanocrystal-to-Ligand Interfacial Thermal Transport: Plasmonic Indium Tin Oxide to Perylene Diimide Adsorbates

The generation and dissipation of heat in nanocrystals upon optical excitation is a process which may either limit or enhance their performance in certain applications. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we tracked the flow of heat from plasmonic tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanocrystals to surface adsorbed perylenediimide (PDI) molecules upon excitation of the ITO near-infrared plasmon resonance. Here, we rationalize the derivative line shapes observed in the transient absorption bleach features are the result of thermal transfer from the ITO core to surface ligands based on temperature-dependent static absorption studies of the PDI molecules adsorbed on plasmonic ITO. Through a series of pump power dependent measurements, we demonstrate that the PDI heating time is largely fluence independent at the powers measured, while the overall recovery time increases. Elucidating thermal transfer rates at the nanocrystal and organic ligand interface is key for applications such as plasmon mediated photocatalysis, where heating may obfuscate hot carrier transfer processes.

Theoretical description of the diimide molecule

The N2H2 molecule is only metastable and as a consequence is not well characterized experimentally. Therefore, we have carried out extensive Hartree-Fock calculations in order to determine equilibrium geometries, one-electron properties, and the relative energies of the cis and trans isomers. In addition, Hartree-Fock and multiconfiguration calculations were carried out to determine the mechanism for isomerization. The trans isomer was found to be 6.6 kcal/mole more stable than the cis form using a basis set which included polarization functions. The lowest energy path found for isomerization occurred by inversion about one nitrogen (rather than rotation about the NN bond) with an activation energy of 47 kcal/mole. Excitation energies for the lowest singlet and triplet excited states are also presented.
