Metagenomes and Metagenome-Assembled Genomes from Microbial Communities in a Biological Nutrient Removal Plant Operated at Hamptons Road Sanitation District (HRSD) with High and Low Dissolved Oxygen Conditions

In this study, we aimed to evaluate Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) and investigate microbial community changes as the dissolved oxygen is reduced in the aerated portions of wastewater treatment trains. We present a dataset of Metagenome-Assembled Genomes (MAGs) obtained from activated sludge collected from the Hamptons Road Sanitation District (HRSD) BNR plant at the beginning of operation, when the DO was high, and at the end of operation, when the DO was low.

This data package includes a time-series of field measurements from March to October 2021 in groundwater and surface water from the Slate River floodplain in Crested Butte, CO, a focus field site for the SLAC Floodplain Hydro-Biogeochemistry SFA. The data was generated as part of the work targeting the overarching research question for the SLAC SFA: How do ubiquitous subsurface interfaces mediate molecular-scale biogeochemical processes and groundwater quality in floodplains and watersheds? The data package includes 5 data files, one for each measured variable: specific conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature and alkalinity. All measurements were recorded in the field immediately after water sampling. Groundwater samples were extracted from a network of installed rhizons (Rhizosphere Research Products, part no. 19.60.21F, 0.6 micrometer mesh size) and piezometer wells within the floodplain. In addition to the data files, there is a terminology file explaining the terms used, a file level metadata file, and a sensor file with metadata about the sensors used. All files are in csv format.

Quantification of energy and cost reduction from decreasing dissolved oxygen levels in full‐scale water resource recovery facilities

Abstract Aeration systems often lack the efficiency to maintain a desired residual dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the tank in part because little consideration is given to the dynamic daily and seasonal loading conditions. Although advanced aeration controllers exist, the majority of plants have DO set points typically based on common practice and literature values rather than site‐specific conditions, which can result in DO set points higher than those necessary to meet treatment objectives. DO set point reduction strategies have primarily been proposed through either static or dynamic simulations. In this study, the substantial improvements associated with DO set point reduction are demonstrated at full scale. A yearlong characterization of full‐scale aeration dynamics captured the effect of diurnal and seasonal fluctuations on oxygen transfer and energy demand and so facilitated the estimation of the potential savings of DO reduction strategies. Full‐scale validation provided direct evidence of DO reduction strategies inducing an overall enhancement of oxygen transfer efficiency along the different bioreactors, while confirming that energy savings as high as 20% were feasible. This study quantifies the influence of oxygen transfer efficiency on operating choices and site‐specific conditions (control strategy, loading conditions, and influent flow variability). Practitioner points We quantified the energy reduction and cost savings associated with a DO reduction in an aeration tank. For each 0.2 mg/L of DO decreased, the average power demand reduction per unit water treated exceeded 17%. Field measurements of dynamic alpha values eliminate the uncertainty in estimating aeration energy and cost savings from DO variations.

Degassing fluxes in a temperate hydropower reservoir predictable by deep‐water dissolved oxygen but highly sensitive to discharge variability

Hydropower reservoirs contribute to methane (CH 4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, like all aquatic ecosystems. Unique to hydropower reservoirs are degassing emissions that occur when deep-water intakes move water with high CH 4 and CO 2 concentrations through turbines, leading to the release of these gases. However, few studies from hydropower reservoirs have measured seasonal variability and drivers of degassing fluxes, especially in temperate systems. We measured monthly degassing emissions in temperate Douglas Reservoir (Tennessee, USA) from 2023 to 2024. We found that degassing fluxes were highest in the summertime, and deep-water CH 4 and CO 2 concentrations were predictable by deep-water dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. Degassing emissions accounted for 37–62% of annually estimated CH 4 emissions, outweighing ebullitive emissions during summer months. We highlight the value of using DO data to estimate deep-water CH 4 and CO 2 concentrations and degassing fluxes at higher temporal resolution to improve annualization and extrapolation of reservoir degassing emissions at broader scales.

Dissolved Oxygen Redox as the Source of Hydrogen Peroxide and Hydroxyl Radical in Sonicated Emulsive Water Microdroplets

Sonicated emulsive water microdroplets (SEWMs) accelerate and enable a variety of catalyst-free chemical transformations. However, significant unanswered questions remain regarding the chemical intermediates they form and their possible redox origin. In this study, we identified dissolved O 2 as the primary originator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as OH• and H 2 O 2. We uncovered the role of dissolved O 2 redox by using a combination of microelectrochemical methods to detect H 2 O 2 , isotopic methods to identify the source of H 2 O 2 , and a combination of electron spin resonance and the DMPO spin trap to detect radicals such as OH•. Notably, we found that H 2 O 2 production is correlated with O 2 content via a reduction pathway enabled by a sufficiently large reducing power that can additionally generate H 2 and even perform Pb electroless deposition on Au and Cu metal substrates. Building on our findings, continuous O 2 bubbling of SEWMs showed accumulation of H 2 O 2 up to ∼88 mM in the aqueous phase within 1 h of sonication, demonstrating the scale-up promise of this method. Distinct to sonochemistry of a single phase, this study advances our understanding of the confluence of redox and chemical reaction mechanisms within SEWMs as a biphasic system. This insight paves the way for improving their reaction kinetics, yield, and selectivity, positioning these attractive redox microreactors as alternatives to traditional electrolyzers.
