Water Power Technologies Office 2019 Peer Review Final Report

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE’s) Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO, or “the office”) 2019 Peer Review was held on October 8–10, 2019, in Alexandria, Virginia. The purpose of the peer review was to evaluate DOE-funded projects for their contribution to the mission and goals of the office, to assess progress made against stated objectives, and to assess the office’s overall management and performance. All programs within EERE are required to undertake rigorous, objective peer reviews covering their key projects, as well as 80%–90% of their funded active project portfolio every two years.

Integrated Traction Drive Thermal Management: Keystone Project 3

The presentation was developed for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Program 2020 Annual Merit Review and Peer Evaluation Meeting. It reports on progress and accomplishments of DOE funded Integrated Traction Drive Thermal Management project. Highlighted are NREL's research accomplishments during FY 2020. Challenges associated with thermal management of integrated traction drives for electric vehicles arise due to the limited packaging space, coolant distribution, electrical connections, and ambient temperatures. For this project at NREL, research focuses on enabling thermal management technologies to support a modular, compact, self-contained integrated electric drive unit with motor and power electronics. Integration approaches, based on packaging location and coolant options for power electronics integrated with candidate motor technologies to reduce cables and connectors, are reviewed and compared using finite element analysis (FEA) tools. Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) jet impingement cooling characterization is carried out experimentally (measuring heat transfer coefficients) and using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling.

Radioactivity-in-materials lead for nEXO (Final Scientific Report)

Abstract, introduction, and summary of work completed and products produced by DOE award SC002466. Primary products were six peer-reviewed publications and two PhD theses. This award also supported the operation of an underground HPGe detector and several radioassay measurements: one in a stand alone publication in Phys. Rev. C and the others in an upcoming nEXO radioassay summary paper. The nEXO collaboration aims to demonstrate the Majorana nature of the neutrino by observing the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136 Xe with a next-generation experiment. The University of Kentucky nEXO group (UKY) operates a world-leading ultra-low-background γ-ray spectrometer as part of the nEXO radioactive background control R&D effort. The nEXO project is a proposed ton-scale neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment. The UKY PI is leading the radioactivity content assessment for all materials required by the nEXO project. As a subset of this task, UKY is also responsible for project-wide management of all low-background γ-ray spectrometry measurements; material assays with these types of instruments, together with ICP-MS, neutron-activation-analysis, and α-spectrometry, are critical to ensuring that the nEXO project can achieve its design sensitivity

High Performance Ionene Architectures for Membrane Separations (Final Technical Report)

Our DOE BES research grant (DE-SC0018181, 8/15/17-2/28/22) focused on the synthesis, characterization, and performance of a new class of polymers known as high-performance (HP)-ionenes as gas separation membranes, including associated computational studies. This research resulted in 11 peer-reviewed journal publications with an additional ~7 manuscripts currently in review or under preparation for submission. This DOE BES funding has also resulted in 3 U.S. patent applications.
