Double exponential approximation and inverse double exponential fit for Bell Labs and International-Military Standard EMP waveforms

We summarize here the double exponential and inverse double exponential approximations for two common EMP waveforms, the Bell Laboratories (Bell Labs) and the International- military standard (IEC-MIL-STD). Both models have been used frequently due to their relatively easy analytical expressions for both the time domain waveforms and their associated frequency domain spectra.

Removal of iodine (I- and IO3-) from aqueous solutions using CoAl and NiAl layered double hydroxides

The treatment of radioactive iodine released from nuclear power plants and radiological waste disposal sites is of great concern due to its high mobility and toxicity. In particular, iodide (I-) and iodate (IO3-) are the major iodine species of concern under various pHs and groundwater conditions. Herein, CoAl and NiAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and investigated to identify the removal mechanisms and efficiencies of both I- and IO3-. Both CoAl and NiAl LDHs exhibited rapid iodine removal processes within 20 min, following the pseudo-second-order model via ion-exchange with parent NO3- anion in the LDHs. The CoAl LDH’s maximum sorption capacities for I- and IO3- were about 1.67 and 2.16 mmol g-1, respectively, whereas for the NiAl LDH, these were about 2.10 and 2.26 mmol g-1, and they followed the Langmuir isotherm model. Interestingly, both the CoAl and NiAl LDHs showed a preferential ion-exchange affinity for IO3- over I-, which was attributed to the structural similarity of the IO3- and NO3- as well as new formation of secondary Co(or Ni)(IO3)2·2H2O phases. In addition, a desorption study indicated that the selectivity order was SO42- = IO3- = OH- > HCO3- > Cl- > NO3- = I- and demonstrated the higher retention of the IO3- than I- anion. This study provides insights into promising iodine sorbents and the different removal mechanisms of I- and IO3- using CoAl and NiAl LDHs.

Hybrid and Inorganic Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskites A 2 WCl 6

We report hybrid and all-inorganic, vacancy-ordered double perovskites of d 2 W 4+ with the formula A 2 WCl 6 (A = CH 3 NH 3 + , Rb + , and Cs + ). These compounds, which are reddish in color, can be distinguished from structurally similar compounds obtained by hydrothermal methods on the basis of structure, spectroscopic, and magnetic properties. The latter are green and incorporate oxygen, with the actual formula Cs 2 WO x Cl 6–x and distinct optical absorption and emission behavior. Furthermore, the local-moment magnetism of the pure-red d 2 compounds reported here does not correspond to the appropriate Kotani model, suggesting as-yet undiscovered physics in these systems.

Unraveling the hysteretic behavior at double cations-double halides perovskite - electrode interfaces

Despite over a decade of research on metal halide perovskites (MHPs) in the context of photovoltaic applications, understanding the nature of electronic and ionic processes associated with current-voltage (I-V) hysteretic behavior has been limited. Here, we explore the hysteretic behavior in (FAPbI 3 ) 0.85 (MAPbBr 3 ) 0.15 perovskite devices with lateral Cr electrodes by applying first order reversal curve (FORC) bias waveform in I-V, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) measurements, and in-situ chemical imaging by time-resolved time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (tr-ToF-SIMS). In dark, we reveal pronounced hysteretic behaviors of charge dynamics in the off-field by probing time-dependent current and contact potential difference (CPD). Under illumination, transient and hysteretic behaviors are significantly reduced. The tr-ToF-SIMS results reveal that the hysteretic behaviors are strongly associated with accumulation of Br- ions at the interfaces. In addition, the low mobility MA + ions result in transient behavior and contribute to the hysteretic phenomena. It was shown that Pb 2+ ions can be reduced at the interfaces due to electrochemical reactions with the electrode in the presence of charge injection and photogenerated charges. Furthermore, these hysteretic behaviors associated with charge dynamics, ion migration, and interfacial electrochemical reaction are critical to further improve the performance and stability of MHPs photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

Overall Performance Losses and Activated Mechanisms in Double Glass and Glass-backsheet Photovoltaic Modules with Monofacial and Bifacial PERC Cells, under Accelerated Exposures

Commercial PV modules have various packaging choices nowadays, which influence their long-term reliability. This study compared the degradation behaviors of sixteen module variants from two brands with varying encapsulant materials (EVA or POE), encapsulant types, module architectures (GB or DG), and cell types (monofacial or bifacial) using null hypothesis testing to determine statistical significant findings. The modules were exposed for 2,520 hours under two accelerated exposures: modified damp heat (mDH) and modified damp heat with full-spectrum light (mDH+FSL). For both brands, two DG module variants with UV-Cutoff rear encapsulant are found to have significantly lower average power loss than the module variants of EVA+GB with opaque rear encapsulant after each accelerated exposure. Metallization interconnect corrosion is identified as the primary degradation mechanism. Furthermore, unsupervised hierarchical clustering finds that the degradation behaviors of modules from one brand with a more strict manufacturing quality control depends on module architectures only.

LipidOz enables automated elucidation of lipid carbon–carbon double bond positions from ozone-induced dissociation mass spectrometry data

Lipids play essential roles in many biological processes and disease pathology, but unambiguous identification of lipids is complicated by the presence of multiple isomeric species differing by fatty acyl chain length, stereospecifically numbered (sn) position, and position/stereochemistry of double bonds. Conventional liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analyses enable the determination of fatty acyl chain lengths (and in some cases sn position) and number of double bonds, but not carbon-carbon double bond positions. Ozone-induced dissociation (OzID) is a gas-phase oxidation reaction that produces characteristic fragments from lipids containing double bonds. OzID can be incorporated into ion mobility spectrometry (IMS)-MS instruments for the structural characterization of lipids, including additional isomer separation and confident assignment of double bond positions. The complexity and repetitive nature of OzID data analysis and lack of software tool support have limited the application of OzID for routine lipidomics studies. Here, we present an open-source Python tool, LipidOz, for the automated determination of lipid double bond positions from OzID-IMS-MS data, which employs a combination of traditional automation and deep learning approaches. Our results demonstrate the ability of LipidOz to robustly assign double bond positions for lipid standard mixtures and complex lipid extracts, enabling practical application of OzID for future lipidomics.

Reduction of Pacific Double‐ITCZ Bias by Convection Parameterization in NCAR CESM2.2

Abstract The impact of convective closure on the double‐ITCZ bias in the NCAR CESM2.2 is investigated in this study. The standard CESM2.2 simulates a remarkable double‐ITCZ bias in the central and eastern Pacific, especially in boreal winter and spring. Modifications to the closure in convection parameterization scheme greatly reduce the double‐ITCZ bias in all seasons, demonstrating that convection parameterization can substantially influence the double‐ITCZ bias in CESM2.2. Further analyses suggest that convection parameterization can modulate the tropical atmosphere‐ocean feedback processes, through which it influences the SST in the southern ITCZ region and hence the double‐ITCZ bias. The changes in the upper ocean temperature advection induced by modified convective closure plays important roles in reducing the warm SST bias and double‐ITCZ precipitation bias in the southern ITCZ region. The modified convective closure improves the low‐level cloud and shortwave cloud radiative forcing in the southeastern Pacific. However, surface heat flux plays only a limited role in reducing warm SST bias and double ITCZ bias because the impacts of shortwave radiation changes are largely canceled by changes in longwave radiation and latent heat flux.

Unitary coupled-cluster based self-consistent polarization propagator theory: A quadratic unitary coupled-cluster singles and doubles scheme

The development of a quadratic unitary coupled-cluster singles and doubles (qUCCSD) based self-consistent polarization propagator method is reported here. We present a simple strategy for truncating the commutator expansion of the unitary version of coupled-cluster transformed Hamiltonian $\bar{H}$. The qUCCSD method for the electronic ground state includes up to double commutators for the amplitude equations and up to cubic commutators for the energy expression. The qUCCSD excited-state eigenvalue equations include up to double commutators for the singles–singles block of $\bar{H}$, single commutators for the singles–doubles and doubles–singles blocks, and the bare Hamiltonian for the doubles–doubles block. Benchmark qUCCSD calculations of the ground-state properties and excitation energies for representative molecules demonstrate significant improvement of the accuracy and robustness over the previous UCC3 scheme derived using Møller–Plesset perturbation theory.

Comparison of tungsten versus molybdenum for double shell capsules using machine learning design optimization

Double shell targets are an alternative ignition platform for inertial confinement fusion. One design consideration for double shell targets is the choice of inner shell material to help trap radiation emitted by the hot fuel to aid ignition. Materials such as molybdenum and tungsten are of interest for the inner shell layer of the targets. While molybdenum has a lower density that could inhibit instability growth and allow for radiography and code benchmarking, tungsten has a higher density that could provide more compression and confinement. These tradeoffs have been explored using optimized designs for each material. Our previous work [Vazirani et al., “Coupling 1D xRAGE simulations with machine learning for graded inner shell design optimization in double shell capsules,” Phys. Plasmas 28, 122709 (2021); Vazirani et al., “Coupling multi-fidelity xRAGE with machine learning for graded inner shell design optimization in double shell capsules,” Phys. Plasmas 30, 062704 (2023); and Vazirani et al., “Bayesian batch optimization for molybdenum versus tungsten inertial confinement fusion double shell target design,” Stat. Anal. Data Min. 17, e11698 (2024)] resulted in a multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization framework to find yield-optimized double shell target geometries. By leveraging simulations of varying fidelities (one-dimensional and two-dimensional) to inform one another, the multi-fidelity optimization was able to optimize a design in the highest fidelity with significantly fewer simulations than would be used in a systematic parameter scan. In this work, we apply the multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization to explore the optimized designs of double shell targets with molybdenum and tungsten inner shells as well as the physics producing the high performing implosions. A physics exploration of all the simulations used in this study shows trends in designs that contribute to high yields, ion temperatures, and fuel areal densities. Comparison of molybdenum and tungsten simulations shows that they can produce similar implosion conditions with different geometries, which would be important to study in experiments. Graded density layers produce varying performances with the two materials but continue to be of interest for future studies along with studies of doped inner shell materials and applied surface roughness.

Expanding on the double copy in null Fermi coordinates

We propose a Weyl classical double copy for a Fermi normal coordinate expansion around null geodesics. To leading order in this ‘Penrose expansion’, we recover a previously proposed double copy of the Penrose limit. For spacetimes with an exact double copy, this Penrose limit double copy is extended to all orders. For spacetimes without such a double copy, generic obstructions appear at second subleading order beyond the Penrose limit. We thus argue that for any spacetime, near any null geodesic there is a classical double copy structure at least up to first subleading order in the Penrose expansion. Lastly, we point out a difficulty in identifying an appropriate flat space to extend our results to the Kerr–Schild double copy, related to the generic incompatibility between Kerr–Schild and Penrose–Güven gauge.

Model-independent predictions for decays of double-heavy hadrons into pairs of heavy hadrons

Double-heavy hadrons can decay into pairs of heavy hadrons through transitions from confining Born-Oppenheimer potentials to heavy-hadron-pair potentials with the same Born-Oppenheimer quantum numbers. The states of the double-heavy hadron are constrained by a Born-Oppenheimer exclusion principle from the identical heavy quarks. The states of a pair of identical heavy hadrons are constrained by exclusion principles from identical particles. The transitions are also constrained by conservation of angular momentum and parity. From these constraints, we derive model-independent selection rules for decays of double-heavy hadrons into pairs of heavy hadrons. The coupling potentials are expressed as sums of products of Born-Oppenheimer transition amplitudes and angular-momentum coefficients. If there is a single dominant Born-Oppenheimer transition amplitude, it factors out of the coupling potentials between double-heavy hadrons in the same Born-Oppenheimer multiplet and pairs of heavy hadrons in specific heavy-quark-spin-symmetry multiplets and out of the corresponding partial decay rates. As examples, we discuss the Born-Oppenheimer potentials and multiplets for conventional double-heavy baryons and for double-heavy tetraquark mesons. We also discuss the relative partial decay rates for conventional double-heavy baryons into pairs of heavy hadrons.
