QCD–Gravity Double Copy in Regge Asymptotics: From \(2\rightarrow n\) Amplitudes to Radiation in Shockwave Collisions

This paper discusses multi-particle production in QCD and in gravity at ultrarelativistic energies, their double-copy relations, and strong parallels in emergent shockwave dynamics. Dispersive techniques are applied to derive the BFKL equation for multi-gluon production in Regge asymptotics. Identical methods apply in gravity and are captured by a gravitational Lipatov equation. The building blocks in both cases are Lipatov vertices and reggeized propagators satisfying double-copy relations; in gravity, Weinberg’s soft theorem is recovered as a limit of the Lipatov framework. BFKL evolution in QCD generates wee parton states of maximal occupancy characterized by an emergent semi-hard saturation scale. Renormalization group equations in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) EFT describe wee parton correlations and their rapidity evolution. A shockwave picture of deeply inelastic scattering and hadron–hadron collisions follows, with multi-particle production described by Cutkosky’s rules in strong time-dependent fields. Gluon radiation in the CGC EFT has a double copy in gravitational shockwave collisions, with a similar correspondence applicable between gluon and graviton shockwave propagators. Possible extensions of this semi-classical double copy are outlined for computing multi-particle production in gravitational shockwave collisions, self-force and tidal contributions, and classical and quantum noise in the focusing of geodesics.

Black hole horizons from the double copy

We describe a procedure for locating black hole horizons in 'Kerr–Schild' spacetimes in the double copy paradigm. Using only single- and zeroth-copy data on flat spacetime, our procedure predicts the existence of trapped surfaces in the double-copy gravitational solution. We show explicitly how this procedure locates the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole and the general Myers–Perry black hole.

UV massive resonance from IR double copy consistency

From the perspective of effective field theory (EFT), Wilson coefficients of the low energy theory are determined by integrating out modes of the full ultraviolet (UV) theory. The spectrum can be in principle resummed if one has access to all available infrared (IR) coefficients at low energies. In this work we show that there exists a general class of consistent massive resonance double-copy (CMRDC) models where UV massive residues are reconstructed through double-copy consistency conditions between the IR Wilson coefficients of the full EFT expansion. Through a color-dual bootstrap, we find surprisingly that double-copy consistency alone introduces the kinematic factors of CMRDC models that soften high energy behavior by exponentiating color-dual contacts. This bootstrap suggests that our massive resonance paradigm is an inevitable consequence of the duality between color and kinematics, thereby providing a path towards emergent UV structure directly from the IR. We then demonstrate how CMRDC models can capture a spectrum of massive modes compatible with general multiplicity, and use Padé extrapolation to solve the inverse problem of identifying massive UV resonance from a small number of IR Wilson coefficients. Double-copy towards supergravity inflation with α-attractor models

A bstract Key to the simplicity of supergravity α -attractor models of inflation are Volkov-Akulov fermions, often in the form of nilpotent superfields. Here we explore the possibility of using the double-copy to construct theories of Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) coupled to supergravity. A color-dual bootstrap admits scattering amplitudes involving pions and vectors through five-point tree-level order by order in mass-dimension, but requires the introduction of a Tr( F 3 ) operator. Gauge theories with this operator were recently found to require a tower of higher-derivative operators to be compatible with the duality between color and kinematics. Adjoint-type double-copy construction at its most conservative seems to require the UV completion of DBIVA + pure Poincaré supergravity scattering amplitudes to a family of theories involving DBIVA-like particles coupled to Weyl-Einstein supergravity. We also point out an alternative solution to color-dual gauged pions that allows adjoint double-copy without a tower of higher derivative corrections but at the cost of exchange symmetry between scalars.

Wee partons in QCD and gravity: Double copy and universality

We discuss a quantitative “double copy” between radiation from shockwave collisions in Einstein gravity and in QCD. The correspondence extends to 2 → N amplitudes in Regge asymptotics. The classicalization and unitarization of these amplitudes at maximal occupancy, corresponding to black hole and Color Glass Condensate (CGC) states respectively, are described by the emergent Goldstone dynamics of wee partons. We outline some consequences of the universal dynamics on both sides of the correspondence.

Entanglement and the double copy

We construct entangled states of gluons that scatter exactly as if they were gravitons. Operationally, these objects implement the double copy at the level of the wave function. Our analysis begins with a general ansatz for a wave function characterizing gluons in two copies of SU(N ) gauge theory. Given relatively minimal assumptions following from permutation invariance and dimensional analysis, the three- and four-particle wave functions generate scattering amplitudes that automatically coincide exactly with gravity, modulo normalization. For five-particle scattering the match is not automatic but imposing certain known selection rules on the amplitude is sufficient to uniquely reproduce gravity. The resulting amplitudes exhibit a color-dressed and permutation-invariant form of the usual double copy relations. We compute the entanglement entropy between the two gauge theory copies and learn that these states are maximally-entangled at large N. Moreover, this approach extends immediately to effective field theories, where Born-Infeld photons and Galileons can be similarly recast as entangled gluons and pions.

QCD-gravity double-copy in the Regge regime: Shock wave propagators

In a previous paper [H. Raj and R. Venugopalan, ], we demonstrated a double-copy relation between inclusive gluon radiation in shock wave collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei and inclusive graviton radiation in trans-Planckian gravitational shock wave collisions. We compute here the corresponding gravitational shock wave propagators in general relativity and demonstrate that they too obey a double-copy relation to gluon shock wave propagators computed previously. These results provide key input in a renormalization group approach toward computing the high frequency radiation spectrum in close black hole encounters. Soft and collinear limits in $\mathcal{N}$ = 8 supergravity using double copy formalism

It is known that $\mathcal{N}$ = 8 supergravity is dual to $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) via the double copy relation. Using the explicit relation between scattering amplitudes in the two theories, we calculate the soft and collinear limits in $\mathcal{N}$ = 8 supergravity from know results in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM. In our application of double copy, a particular self-duality condition is chosen for scalars that allows us to constrain and determine the R-symmetry indices of the supergravity states in the collinear limit.

BRST symmetry and the convolutional double copy

Motivated by the results of Anastasiou et al., we consider the convolutional double copy for BRST and anti-BRST covariant formulations of gravitational and gauge theories in more detail. We give a general BRST and anti-BRST invariant formulation of linearised $\mathcal{N}$ = 0 supergravity using superspace methods and show how this may be obtained from the square of linearised Yang-Mills theories. We demonstrate this relation for the Schwarzschild black hole and the ten-dimensional black string solution as two concrete examples.

Double copy root of Hawking thermality

The Hawking radiation spectrum from a collapsing null shell can be derived via the double copy of a simpler gauge theory calculation. Analyzing the non-abelian Yang-Mills root of this process, we demonstrate that the radiation spectrum is thermal in the color charge eigenvalue 𝜆, not energy. Considering the 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(𝑁 𝑐 ) gauge theory in the large 𝑁 𝑐 limit, we find the differential spectrum ⅆ⁢𝑁/ⅆ⁢𝜆 is a product of the gravitationally familiar Planck-like factor and the color phase space density, modeled here as the Wigner semicircle from random matrix theory. This reveals that apparent energy thermality in gravity is the direct dual of charge thermality in its underlying non-abelian gauge theory.

Hidden symmetry in the double copy

We show that the Killing tensor of the Kerr spacetime has an analogue in the $\sqrt{Kerr}$ gauge theory solution related to it by the classical double copy. This hidden symmetry of $\sqrt{Kerr}$ leads to an additional constant of motion for color-charged point particles moving in it, implying integrability of the equation of motion. These are the gauge theory counterparts to the Carter constant and the integrability of the geodesic equation in a Kerr background.

Coaction and double-copy properties of configuration-space integrals at genus zero

We investigate configuration-space integrals over punctured Riemann spheres from the viewpoint of the motivic Galois coaction and double-copy structures generalizing the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations in string theory. For this purpose, explicit bases of twisted cycles and cocycles are worked out whose orthonormality simplifies the coaction. We present methods to efficiently perform and organize the expansions of configuration-space integrals in the inverse string tension α' or the dimensional-regularization parameter ϵ of Feynman integrals. Generating-function techniques open up a new perspective on the coaction of multiple polylogarithms in any number of variables and analytic continuations in the unintegrated punctures. We present a compact recursion for a generalized KLT kernel and discuss its origin from intersection numbers of Stasheff polytopes and its implications for correlation functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We find a non-trivial example of correlation functions in (p, 2) minimal models, which can be normalized to become uniformly transcendental in the p → ∞ limit.

A double copy from twisted (co)homology at genus g

We study a family of generalized hypergeometric integrals defined on punctured Riemann surfaces of genus g. These integrals are closely related to g-loop string amplitudes in chiral splitting, where one leaves the loop-momenta, moduli and all but one puncture un-integrated. We study the twisted homology groups associated to these integrals, and determine their intersection numbers. We make use of these homology intersection numbers to write a double-copy formula for the "complex" version of these integrals -- their closed-string analogues. To verify our findings, we develop numerical tools for the evaluation of the integrals in this work. This includes the recently introduced Enriquez kernels -- integration kernels for higher-genus polylogarithms.

Hidden amplitude zeros from the double-copy map

Recently, Arkani-Hamed proposed the existence of zeros in scattering amplitudes in certain quantum field theories including the cubic adjoint scalar theory Tr ( ϕ 3 ) , the S U ( N ) nonlinear sigma model and Yang-Mills theory. These hidden zeros are special kinematic points where the amplitude vanishes and factorizes into a product of lower-point amplitudes, similar to factorization near poles. In this paper, we show a close connection between the existence of such zeros and the double-copy map. In fact, compatibility with the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations requires the presence of these zeros. We also show that these zeros extend via the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations to special Galileon amplitudes and their corrections, evincing that these hidden zeros are also present in permutation-invariant amplitudes. A double copy from twisted (co)homology at genus one

We study the twisted (co)homology of a family of genus-one integrals — the so called Riemann-Wirtinger integrals. These integrals are closely related to one-loop string amplitudes in chiral splitting where one leaves the loop-momentum, modulus and all but one puncture un-integrated. While not actual one-loop string integrals, they share many properties and are simple enough that the associated twisted (co)homologies have been completely characterized [1]. Using intersection numbers — an inner product on the vector space of allowed differential forms — we derive the Gauss-Manin connection for two bases of the twisted cohomology providing an independent check of [2]. We also use the intersection index — an inner product on the vector space of allowed contours — to derive a double-copy formula for the closed-string analogues of Riemann-Wirtinger integrals (one-dimensional integrals over the torus). Similar to the celebrated KLT formula between open- and closed-string tree-level amplitudes, these intersection indices form a genus-one KLT-like kernel defining bilinears in meromorphic Riemann-Wirtinger integrals that are equal to their complex counterparts.

Global bases for nonplanar loop integrands, generalized unitarity, and the double copy to all loop orders

We introduce a constructive method for defining a global loop-integrand basis for scattering amplitudes, encompassing both planar and nonplanar contributions. Our approach utilizes a graph-based framework to establish a well-defined, non-redundant basis of integrands. This basis, constructed from a chosen set of non-redundant graphs together with a selection of irreducible scalar products, provides clear insights into various physical properties of scattering amplitudes and proves useful in multiple contexts, such as on-shell Ward identities and manifesting gauge-choice independence. A key advantage of our integrand basis is its ability to streamline the generalized unitarity method. Specifically, we can directly read off the coefficients of basis elements without resorting to ansätze or solving linear equations. This novel approach allows us to lift generalized unitarity cuts — expressed as products of tree amplitudes — to loop-level integrands, facilitating the use of the tree-level double copy to generate complete gravitational integrands at any loop order. This method circumvents the difficulties in identifying complete higher-loop-order gauge-theory integrands that adhere to the color-kinematics duality. Additionally, our cut-based organization is well-suited for expansion in hard or soft limits, aiding in the exploration of ultraviolet or classical limits of scattering amplitudes.

Loop-level double-copy for massive fermions in the fundamental

We find that unitarity cuts and the duality between color and kinematics are sufficient constraints to bootstrap D-dimensional QCD scattering amplitudes starting from three-particle tree-level. Specifically, we calculate tree level amplitudes through six-points, as well as the four-point one-loop correction for massive fermions in the fundamental representation of the gauge group — constructing a color-dual representation of the latter for the first time. To do so we clarify a prescription for functional kinematic ansatze involving fermionic matter. The advantages of color-dual calculation, familiar from particles in the adjoint, also apply here: only a small number of basis topologies must be constrained via physical information of the theory, and algebraic relations propagate this to a full solution. As all the QCD amplitudes we construct here are color-dual, they trivially generate D-dimensional amplitudes in gravitational theories via double-copy construction.
