Spouted bed with venturi draft tube and method for improved gas-solid contacting

A Venturi draft tube spouted bed and method are disclosed that enables scale-up with small particles and improves heat and mass transfer by increasing material turnover rate. A Venturi-style eductor has been incorporated into the spouted bed draft tube to provide suction at the bottom of the bed to better entrain material and reduce the propensity for dead zones at the bottom of the narrow conical section.

An algorithmic approach to predicting mechanical draft cooling tower fan speeds from infrasound signals

Mechanical draft cooling towers (MDCTs) serve a critical heat management role in a variety of industries. For nuclear reactors in particular, the consistent, predictable operation of MDCTs is required to avoid damage to infrastructure and reduce the potential for catastrophic failure. Accurate, reliable measurement of MDCT fan speed is therefore an important maintenance and safety requirement. To that end, we have developed an algorithm for automatically predicting the rotational speeds of multiple, simultaneously operating fan rotors using contactless, infrasound measurements. The algorithm is based on identifying the blade passing frequencies (BPFs), their harmonics, as well as the motor frequencies (MFs) for each fan in operation. Using the algorithm, these frequencies can be automatically identified in the acoustic waveform’s short-time Fourier transform spectrogram. Attribution is aided by a set of filters that rely on the unique spectral and temporal characteristics of fan operation, as well as the intrinsic frequency ratios of the BPF harmonics and the BPF/MF signals. The algorithm was tested against infrasound data acquired from infrasound sensors deployed at two research reactors: the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) located at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). After manually identifying the MDCT gearbox ratio, the algorithm was able to quickly yield fan speeds at both reactors in good agreement with ground truth. Ultimately, this work demonstrates the ease by which MDCT fans may be monitored in order to optimize operational conditions and avoid infrastructure damage.

FORCE Integration with DRAFT and IDAES

Integrated energy systems (IES) combine, in mutually beneficial ways, power from variable renewable energy sources and nuclear power plants (NPP) to produce multiple commodities and improve economic viability under uncertain market conditions. Technical and economic analysis of IES requires modeling of complex processes with software models having enough fidelity to capture real-world dynamics while still being capable of running using reasonable computing resources. The open-source Framework for Optimization of Resources and Economics (FORCE) tool suite, developed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), has enabled comprehensive modeling and simulation of IES. The capabilities within FORCE include grid portfolio optimization through the Holistic Energy Resource Optimization Network (HERON) and the transient process model analysis library HYBRID, among others. Recent developments for the FORCE toolset have centered on strengthening the flexibility and modularity to link with external models and other available software to enhance IES simulations. Adding versatility to the FORCE toolset improves capability resulting in better techno-economic simulation of nuclear and IES components (both in potential higher fidelity and accuracy to expected performance after deployment). It also helps leverage existing work in the IES field and improve efficiency in national code development. This report focuses on two such endeavors: integration of the Dynamic Reliability Analysis Framework Tool (DRAFT) and the Design Integration and Synthesis Platform to Advance Tightly Coupled Hybrid Energy Systems (DISPATCHES) software packages into FORCE.

Assessment of Mechanical Draft Cooling Tower Thermal Emissions from Visual Images of Plumes

Using a one-dimensional code, we computed the power (enthalpy discharge rate) of a twelve-cell mechanical draft cooling tower (MDCT) using over two hundred visible condensed water vapor plume volume measurements derived from images, weather data, and tower operating conditions. The plume images were simultaneously captured by multiple stationary digital cameras surrounding the cooling tower. An analysis technique combining structure from motion (SfM), a neural-network-based image segmentation algorithm, and space carving was used to quantify the volumes. Afterwards, the power output was computed using novel techniques in the one-dimensional code that included cooling tower exhaust plume adjacency effects implemented with a modified version of the entrainment function, weather data averaged from eleven stations, and fan operations at the times when plume volumes were measured. The model was then compared with the averaged observed power output, and it validated well with an average error ranging from 6 to 12%, depending on the meteorological data used in the simulations. This methodology can possibly determine power plant fuel consumption rates by applying visible imagery.

Draft Genome of Burkholderia cenocepacia TAtl-371, a Strain from the Burkholderia cepacia Complex Retains Antagonism in Different Carbon and Nitrogen Sources

Burkholderia cenocepacia TAtl-371 was isolated from the rhizosphere of a tomato plant growing in Atlatlahucan, Morelos, Mexico. This strain exhibited a broad antimicrobial spectrum against bacteria, yeast, and fungi. Here, we report and describe the improved, high-quality permanent draft genome of B. cenocepacia TAtl-371, which was sequenced using a combination of PacBio RS and PacBio RS II sequencing methods. The 7,496,106 bp genome of the TAtl-371 strain is arranged in three scaffolds, contains 6722 protein-coding genes, and 99 RNA only-encoding genes. Genome analysis revealed genes related to biosynthesis of antimicrobials such as non-ribosomal peptides, siderophores, chitinases, and bacteriocins. Moreover, analysis of bacterial growth on different carbon and nitrogen sources shows that the strain retains its antimicrobial ability.

Investigation of the influence of frictional viscosity regularization on quasi-static gas-solid flow predictions in a conical spouted bed with non-porous draft tube

The stress in the quasi-static particle flow is often modeled through the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. In the extension to complex three-dimensional flows, a granular viscosity is introduced through a tensorial rheology and the deviatoric frictional stress tensor is assumed aligned with the strain rate tensor. This granular viscosity is singular as the shear rate approaches zero, regardless of the local rheology. We discuss the influence of regularizing such a frictional viscosity on the particle circulation rate and other measured characteristics in a laboratory scale draft tube spouted bed. Here, the friction between particles is modeled either with a constant Coulomb rheology or using a local particle pressure and strain-rate based friction known as μ ( I )-rheology. The predictions appear very dependent on the regularization parameter introduced by the method. The mean properties of the flow (e.g. circulation and pressure drop) monotonically converge towards the measurements when the regularization parameter tends to zero. In other respects, the two regularization models regarded in this study induced similar hydrodynamics within the spouted bed of interest. But the analysis of the conditional averages of the inertial number and the fraction of the solids in the quasi-static regime shows that the extent and staticity of the quasi-static region is sensitive to changes to the regularization parameter or regularization function.

Predicting and analyzing the performance of biomass-burning natural draft rocket cookstoves using computational fluid dynamics

Nearly three billion people in the world today rely on biomass for their cooking needs. Indoor cooking using biomass has been identified as a major cause of respiratory illnesses, resulting in four million premature deaths every year. Improved biomass cookstoves may help mitigate this challenge. This paper presents a two-dimensional axisymmetric steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a biomass burning, natural draft rocket cookstove. The CFD model includes coupled sub-models representing combustion, turbulence, and heat transfer. The model is validated against experimental data and used to predict temperatures and flow inside the cookstove, including the airflow rate through the cookstove and heat transfer to the cookpot. We find that the excess air is typically many times stoichiometric air during standard operating conditions and is sensitive to flow field obstructions. We analyze the effects of geometric and operational features such as the pot support height, secondary air entrainment, cone-deck shape, and baffle placement within the cookstove on the flow, airflow rate, mixing, and stove thermal efficiency. The model shows that secondary air entrainment, though ineffective by itself, increases turbulent mixing when used in conjunction with a central baffle but reduces thermal efficiencies due to enhanced heat transfer to the walls. We find that a lower pot support height decreases the airflow rate and increases thermal efficiency. We model thirty-six cone-deck configurations and find that the cone-deck shape primarily affects the airflow rate through the stove, with more constricted designs leading to higher thermal efficiencies.

Numerical simulation of vortex-induced motion of a deep-draft paired-column semi-submersible offshore platform

Understanding and predicting vortex-induced motion (VIM) of offshore systems for deep seawater applications is crucial to improve the system safety and integrity. In this paper, we report on experimental tow-tank measurements and numerical simulations of VIM of a deep-draft offshore platform, specifically Paired-Column Semisubmersible (PC-Semi). The study is carried out in model scale (1:54), at subcritical flow regime with Re~10 4 . Motion of the floating structure has three degrees of freedom: in-line, cross-flow, and yaw. Large periodic cross-flow motion is measured for headings 0°, 11.25°, and 22.5°, for reduced velocities (U r ) between 5 and 10. Considerably smaller cross-flow amplitude is recorded at 45° heading across the U r range considered. An extensive sensitivity study is performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to capture the transient displacement history of VIM (in-line, cross-flow, and yaw motion components). Amplitude and period of cross-flow (transverse) motion are obtained from statistical analysis of VIM time history and subsequently used as the validation criterion between the CFD simulation and the model tests. Satisfactory agreement between the CFD results and tow-tank measurements is achieved with a Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation – Shear Stress Transport (DDES-SST) formulation. Finally, this work provides experimental results and serves as a practical starting point to set up a CFD problem to estimate amplitude and period of cross-flow VIM motion for offshore engineering applications.

The Crown Pearl: a draft genome assembly of the European freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera (Linnaeus, 1758)

Abstract Since historical times, the inherent human fascination with pearls turned the freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera (Linnaeus, 1758) into a highly valuable cultural and economic resource. Although pearl harvesting in M. margaritifera is nowadays residual, other human threats have aggravated the species conservation status, especially in Europe. This mussel presents a myriad of rare biological features, e.g. high longevity coupled with low senescence and Doubly Uniparental Inheritance of mitochondrial DNA, for which the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly known. Here, the first draft genome assembly of M. margaritifera was produced using a combination of Illumina Paired-end and Mate-pair approaches. The genome assembly was 2.4 Gb long, possessing 105,185 scaffolds and a scaffold N50 length of 288,726 bp. The ab initio gene prediction allowed the identification of 35,119 protein-coding genes. This genome represents an essential resource for studying this species’ unique biological and evolutionary features and ultimately will help to develop new tools to promote its conservation.

Draft Assembly of Elite Inbred Line PH207 Provides Insights into Genomic and Transcriptome Diversity in Maize

Intense artificial selection over the last 100 years has produced elite maize (Zea mays) inbred lines that combine to produce high-yielding hybrids. To further our understanding of how genome and transcriptome variation contribute to the production of high-yielding hybrids, we generated a draft genome assembly of the inbred line PH207 to complement and compare with the existing B73 reference sequence. B73 is a founder of the Stiff Stalk germplasm pool, while PH207 is a founder of Iodent germplasm, both of which have contributed substantially to the production of temperate commercial maize and are combined to make heterotic hybrids. Comparison of these two assemblies revealed over 2500 genes present in only one of the two genotypes and 136 gene families that have undergone extensive expansion or contraction. Transcriptome profiling revealed extensive expression variation, with as many as 10,564 differentially expressed transcripts and 7128 transcripts expressed in only one of the two genotypes in a single tissue. Genotype-specific genes were more likely to have tissue/condition-specific expression and lower transcript abundance. The availability of a high-quality genome assembly for the elite maize inbred PH207 expands our knowledge of the breadth of natural genome and transcriptome variation in elite maize inbred lines across heterotic pools.
