An enhanced sine dwell method as applied to the Galileo core structure modal survey

An incremental modal survey performed in 1988 on the core structure of the Galileo spacecraft with its adapters with the purpose of assessing the dynamics of the new portions of the structure is considered. Emphasis is placed on the enhancements of the sine dwell method employed in the test. For each mode, response data is acquired at 32 frequencies in a narrow band enclosing the resonance, utilizing the SWIFT technique. It is pointed out that due to the simplicity of the data processing involved, the diagnostic and modal-parameter data is available within several minutes after data acquisition; however, compared with straight curve-fitting approaches, the method requires more time for data acquisition.

Microstructurally based variations on the dwell fatgue life of titanium alloy IMI 834

An experimental study was undertaken to determine the role of microstructure on the fatigue life reduction observed in titanium alloy IMI 834 under dwell loading conditions. The wave forms compared were a trapezoid with 15 and 30 second hold times at the maximum test load and a baseline, 10 Hertz, haversine. The stress ratio for both loading wave forms was 0.10. The fatigue loading of each specimen was conducted in a vacuum within a scanning electron microscope chamber which minimized the possibility that the laboratory environment would adversely affect the material behavior. Two microstructural conditions were investigated in the experimental program. The first involved standard 'disk' material with equiaxed alpha in a transformed beta matrix. The second material was cut from the same disk forging as the first but was heat treated to obtain a martensitic alpha prime microstructure. Tensile tests were performed prior to the onset of the fatigue loading portion of the study, and it was determined that the yield strengths of the specimens from both material conditions were within ten percent. The maximum fatigue loads were chosen to be 72 percent of the average yield strength for both materials as determined from the tensile tests. It was found that the cycles to failure from the 10 Hertz loading wave form were reduced by a factor of approximately five when the loading was changed to the trapezoidal wave form for the standard 'disk' material. The fatigue life reduction for the martensitic structure under identical test conditions was approximately 1.75. The improvement observed with the martensitic structure also was accompanied by an increase in overall fatigue life for the wave forms tested. This paper will review the results and conclusions of this effort.

Dwell Time and Surface Parameter Effects on Removal of Silicone Oil From D6ac Steel Using TCA

This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of dwell time, surface roughness, and the surface activation state on 1,1,1-trichloroethane's (TCA's) effectiveness for removing silicone oil from D6ac steel. Silicone-contaminated test articles were washed with TCA solvent, and then the surfaces were analyzed for residue, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The predominant factor affecting the ability to remove the silicone oil was surface roughness.

Effects of equivalence ratio and dwell time on exhaust emissions from an experimental premixing prevaporizing burner

A flame-tube study was performed to determine the effects of equivalence ratio and residence time on exhaust emissions with premixed, prevaporized propane fuel. Nitrogen oxides emissions as low as .3 g NO2/kg fuel were measured with greater than 99% combustion efficiency at 800 K inlet temperature and an equivalence ratio of .4. For a constant combustion efficiency, lower nitrogen oxides emissions were obtained by burning very lean with relatively long residence times than by using somewhat higher equivalence ratios with shorter times.

Stress-Activated Positive Holes (O− in a Matrix of O2–) Cause DNA Damage in Surface-Dwelling Organisms: Unveiling Mutation-Induced Secrets of Nature

Peroxy defects consist of pairs of tightly bonded oxygen anions in the –1 valence state such as in O3X/OO\YO3 with X, Y = Si4+, Al3+ etc. They commonly occur in igneous, metamorphic and many sedimentary rocks. When such rocks are stressed by tectonic forces, peroxy defects break up, releasing highly mobile electronic charge carriers: defect electrons in the O2– sublattice, i.e. unbound O–, known as “positive holes”, h•. The h• can flow out of stressed rock volumes, spreading far and wide, causing electric currents and electrochemical reactions. This study explores how the h• impact the electron flow in the electron transport chain (ETC) of organisms on the surface of rocks such as gabbro and granite. We found that, by forming hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anions, the h• disrupt the in vivo coordination of reduction-oxidation reactions that are essential for the timing of the redox cycle. Our observations show that stress activation of h• delays the sprouting of certain plant seeds and impedes the growth of yeast cultures, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The h• induce mutations and affect plant development as evidenced by reduced stem length and leaf size. At the same time, the h• serve as a source of abiotic oxidation, capable of forming various organic compounds in situ. Through the generation of radical species that create new carbon-carbon bonds the h• facilitate the abiotic synthesis of hydrocarbons and other organic molecules essential to life, including porphyrins. Our findings highlight the intricate interplay between positive holes, redox timing, and biological processes, revealing their significant role in influencing the growth and development of organisms in tectonically stressed crustal environments. Understanding these effects enhances our broader comprehension of redox biology and the influence of environmental factors on cellular development in natural settings.

Effect of Notches on Creep-Fatigue Behavior of a P/M Nickel-Based Superalloy

A study was performed to determine and model the effect of high temperature dwells on notched low cycle fatigue (NLCF) and notch stress rupture behavior of a fine grain LSHR powder metallurgy (PM) nickel-based superalloy. It was shown that a 90 second dwell applied at the minimum stress (min dwell) was considerably more detrimental to the NLCF lives than similar dwell applied at the maximum stress (max dwell). The short min dwell NLCF lives were shown to be caused by growth of small oxide blisters which caused preferential cracking when coupled with high concentrated notch root stresses. The cyclic max dwell notch tests failed mostly by a creep accumulation, not by fatigue, with the crack origin shifting internally to a substantial distance away from the notch root. The classical von Mises plastic flow model was unable to match the experimental results while the hydrostatic stress profile generated using the Drucker-Prager plasticity flow model was consistent with the experimental findings. The max dwell NLCF and notch stress rupture tests exhibited substantial creep notch strengthening. The triaxial Bridgman effective stress parameter was able to account for the notch strengthening by collapsing the notched and uniform gage geometry test data into a singular grouping.
