Search for lepton-flavor-violating ${\tau }^{-}\to {{\ell}}^{-}{K}_{s}^{0}$ decays at Belle and Belle II

We present the results of a search for charged-lepton-flavor violating decays ${\tau }^{-}\to {{\ell}}^{-}{K}_{s}^{0}$, where ℓ − is either an electron or a muon. We combine e + e − data samples recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider (428 fb −1 ) with samples recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB collider (980 fb −1 ) to obtain a sample of 1.3 billion e + e − → τ + τ − events. We observe 0 and 1 events and set 90% confidence level upper limits of 0.8 × 10 −8 and 1.2 × 10 −8 on the branching fractions of the decay modes ${\tau }^{-}\to {e}^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\tau }^{-}\to {\mu }^{-}{K}_{S}^{0}$, respectively. These are the most stringent upper limits to date.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays to ℓα at Belle

We report a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decays τ ± → ℓ ± α (ℓ = e, μ), where α is an undetected spin-0 particle, such as an axion-like particle using 736 × 10 6 tau lepton pairs collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We find no evidence of signal and obtain the most stringent upper limits on the branching fractions at 95% confidence level: $\mathcal{B}$ (τ ± → e ± α) < (0.4–6.4) × 10 −4 and $\mathcal{B}$ (τ ± → μ ± α) < (0.2–3.5) × 10 −4 at 95% confidence level for an α mass in the range 0.0 ≤ m α ≤ 1.6 GeV/c 2 .

Measurements of the branching fractions of ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Sigma }^{+}{K}_{S}^{0}$, ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{\pi }^{+}$, and ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{K}+$ at Belle and Belle II

Using 983.0 fb −1 and 427.9 fb −1 data samples collected with the Belle and Belle II detectors at the KEKB and SuperKEKB asymmetric energy e + e − colliders, respectively, we present studies of the Cabibbo-favored ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}$ decays ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Sigma }^{+}{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{\pi }^{+}$, and the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{K}^{+}$. The ratios of branching fractions of ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Sigma }^{+}{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{K}^{+}$ relative to that of ${\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{-}{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{+}$ are measured for the first time, while the ratio $\mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{\pi }^{+})/\mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{-}{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{+})$ is also determined and improved by an order of magnitude in precision. The measured branching fraction ratios are $\begin{array}{c}\frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Sigma }^{+}{K}_{S}^{0}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{-}{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{+}\right)}=0.067\pm 0.007\pm 0.003,\\ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{\pi }^{+}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{-}{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{+}\right)}=0.251\pm 0.005\pm 0.010,\\ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{K}^{+}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{-}{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{+}\right)}=0.017\pm 0.003\pm 0.001.\end{array}$ Additionally, the ratio $\mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{K}^{+})/\mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{\pi }^{+})$ is measured to be 0.068 ± 0.010 ± 0.004. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Multiplying the ratios by the branching fraction of the normalization mode, $\mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{-}{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{+})=(2.9\pm 1.3)%$, we obtain the following absolute branching fractions $\begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Sigma }^{+}{K}_{S}^{0})=(0.194\pm 0.021\pm 0.009\pm 0.087)\text{%},\\ \mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{\pi }^{+})=(0.728\pm 0.014\pm 0.027\pm 0.326)\text{%},\\ \mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{0}{K}^{+})=(0.049\pm 0.007\pm 0.003\pm 0.022)\text{%},\end{array}$ where the third uncertainties are from $\mathcal{B}({\Xi }_{c}^{+}\to {\Xi }^{-}{\pi }^{+}{\pi }^{+})$.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating τ – → μ – μ + μ – decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ – → μ – μ + μ – using a 424 fb –1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e – collider. The selection of e + e – → τ + τ – events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 –8 on the branching fraction of the τ – → μ – μ + μ – decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

Precision e + e − hemisphere masses in the dijet region with power corrections

We derive high-precision results for the e + e − heavy jet mass (HJM) dσ/dρ and dihemisphere mass (DHM) d 2 σ/(ds 1 ds 2 ) distributions, for s 1 ~ s 2 , in the dijet region. New results include: i) the N 3 LL resummation for HJM of large logarithms ln n (ρ) at small ρ including the exact two-loop non-global hemisphere soft function, the 4-loop cusp anomalous dimension and the 3-loop hard and jet functions, ii) N 3 LL results for DHM with resummation of logarithms ln(s 1,2 /Q 2 ) when there is no large separation between s 1 and s 2 , iii) profile functions for HJM to give results simultaneously valid in the peak and tail regions, iv) a complete two-dimensional basis of non-perturbative functions which can be used for double differential observables, that are needed for both HJM and DHM in the peak region, and v) an implementation of renormalon subtractions for large-angle soft radiation to $\mathcal{O}$ (α$^{3}_{s}$) together with a resummation of the additional large ln(Qρ/Λ QCD ) logarithms. Here Q is the e + e − center-of-mass energy. Our resummation results are combined with known fixed-order $\mathcal{O}$ (α$^{3}_{s}$) results and we discuss the convergence and remaining perturbative uncertainty in the cross section. We also prove that, at order 1/Q, the first moment of the HJM distribution involves an additional non-perturbative parameter compared to the power correction that shifts the tail of the spectrum (where 1 ≫ ρ ≫ Λ QCD /Q). This differs from thrust where a single non-perturbative parameter at order 1/Q describes both the first moment and the tail, and it disfavors models of power corrections employing a single non-perturbative parameter, such as the low-scale effective coupling model. In this paper we focus only on the dijet region, not the far-tail distribution for ρ ≳ 0.2 beyond which the trijet factorization and resummation become important.

Measurement of the phase between strong and electromagnetic amplitudes in the decay J/ψ → ϕη

The first direct measurement of the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes for a J/ψ decaying into a vector-pseudoscalar final state is performed using 26 energy points of e + e − annihilation data between 3.00 GeV and 3.12 GeV. The data sets were collected by the BESIII detector with a total integrated luminosity of 452 pb −1 . By investigating the interference pattern in the cross section lineshape of e + e − → ϕη, the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of J/ψ decay is determined to be within [133°, 228°] at 68% confidence level.

Multiplicity dependence of ${\Xi }_{\text{c}}^{+}$ and ${\Xi }_{\text{c}}^{0}$ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The first measurement at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) of the production yield of the strange-charm baryons $Ξ$$^{+}_{c}$ and $Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) in different charged-particle multiplicity classes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC is reported. The $Ξ$$^{+}_{c}$ baryon is reconstructed via the $Ξ$$^{+}_{c}$ → $Ξ$ – π + π + decay channel in the range 4 < p T < 12 GeV/c, while the $Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ baryon is reconstructed via both the $Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ → $Ξ$ – π + and $Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ → $Ξ$ – e + ν e decay channels in the range 2 < p T < 12 GeV/c. The baryon-to-meson ($Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ + /D 0 ) and the baryon-to-baryon ($Ξ$$^{0}_{c}$ + /Λ$^{+}_{c}$) production yield ratios show no significant dependence on multiplicity. In addition, the observed yield ratios are not described by theoretical predictions that model charm-quark fragmentation based on measurements at e + e − and e − p colliders, indicating differences in the charm-baryon production mechanism in pp collisions. A comparison with different event generators and tunings, including different modelling of the hadronisation process, is also discussed.

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating τ − → e ∓ ℓ ± ℓ − decays at Belle II

The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events containing a signal candidate is based on an inclusive-tagging reconstruction and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. Upper limits on the branching fractions between 1.3 and 2.5 × 10 −8 are set at the 90% confidence level. These results are the most stringent bounds to date for four of the modes.

Valence instability and collapse of ferromagnetism in EuB 6 at high pressures

Despite the simplicity of their cubic crystal lattice, rare-earth hexaborides display complex physical properties including a (long debated) onset of metallization via magnetic polaron formation at T c1 approximate to 15 K preceding ferromagnetic ordering at T c2 approximate to 12 K. Here, in this work, we used applied pressure to tune the interplay between electronic structure and magnetism in EuB6. We probed the magnetism, valence, and structure of EuB 6 under quasi-hydrostatic pressures up to 30 GPa using X-ray techniques. Our findings show evidence for collapse of ferromagnetism above 20 GPa following a monotonic increase of mean Eu valence. While X-ray diffraction measurements in the paramagnetic state at room temperature show that the lattice retains cubic symmetry, a measurable quadrupole interaction seen by time-domain synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy suggests a lowering of symmetry associated with magnetic ordering, becoming more prominent across the magnetic transition. The interplay between conduction band electron count and magnetism observed under applied pressure in EuB 6 opens possibilities for fine-tuning metallization and magnetic properties of similar Eu-based semi-metal systems.

The data acquisition system of the LZ dark matter detector: FADR

The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter detector is described. The signals from 745 PMTs, distributed across three subsystems, are sampled with 100-MHz 32-channel digitizers (DDC-32s). A basic waveform analysis is carried out on the on-board Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to extract information about the observed scintillation and electroluminescence signals. This information is used to determine if the digitized waveforms should be preserved for offline analysis. The system is designed around the Kintex-7 FPGA. In addition to digitizing the PMT signals and providing basic event selection in real time, the flexibility provided by the use of FPGAs allows us to monitor the performance of the detector and the DAQ in parallel to normal data acquisition. Furthermore, the hardware and software/firmware of this FPGA-based Architecture for Data acquisition and Realtime monitoring (FADR) are discussed and performance measurements are described.

Monochromatization interaction region optics design for direct s-channel Higgs production at FCC-ee

The FCC-ee offers the potential to measure the electron Yukawa coupling via direct s-channel Higgs production, e + e − → H , at a centre-of-mass (CM) energy of ∼125 GeV. This measurement is significantly facilitated if the CM energy spread of e + e − collisions can be reduced to a level comparable to the natural width of the Higgs boson, Γ H = 4.1 MeV, without substantial loss in luminosity. Achieving this reduction in collision-energy spread is possible through the “monochromatization” concept. The basic idea is to create opposite correlations between spatial position and energy deviation within the colliding beams, which can be accomplished in beam optics by introducing a nonzero dispersion function with opposite signs for the two beams at the interaction point. Since the first proposal in 2016, the implementation of monochromatization at the FCC-ee has been continuously improved, starting from preliminary parametric studies. In this paper, we present a detailed study of the interaction region optics design for this newly proposed collision mode, exploring different potential configurations and their implementation in the FCC-ee global lattice, along with beam dynamics simulations and performance evaluations including the impact of “beamstrahlung.”

The imaging Time-of-Propagation detector at Belle II

Here, we report on the construction, operation, and performance of the Time-of-Propagation detector with imaging used for the Belle II experiment running at the Super-KEKB e + e - collider. This detector is located in the central barrel region and uses Cherenkov light to provide particle identification among hadrons. The Cherenkov light is radiated in highly polished bars of synthetic fused silica (quartz) and transported to the ends of the bars via total internal reflection. One bar end is instrumented with finely segmented micro-channel-plate photomultiplier tubes to record the light, while the other end has a mirror attached to reflect the photons back to the instrumented end. Both the propagation times and hit positions of the Cherenkov photons are measured; these depend on the Cherenkov angle and together provide good discrimination among charged pions, kaons, and protons with momenta up to around 4 GeV/ c . To date, the detector has been used to record and analyze almost 600 fb −1 of Belle II data.

Performance of the Pair Spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab

This article describes the performance of the pair spectrometer installed in experimental Hall D at Jefferson Lab and its successfully operation in multiple experiments with the GlueX detector. The primary purpose of the pair spectrometer is the precise determination of the flux of beam photons incident on the GlueX target, a critical input for physics analyses such as absolute cross-section measurements. The photon energy spectrum is determined by reconstructing electron–positron pairs produced in a thin converter inserted into the photon beam. The spectrometer is integrated into the GlueX trigger system, whose electronics enable continuous real-time monitoring of the photon flux and the recording of e+e- pair candidates for offline analysis. In addition, the pair spectrometer provides a versatile test facility for evaluating calorimeter prototypes using leptons with well-defined energies produced via electromagnetic pair production.

Transverse Λ polarization in unpolarized $pp$ → jet Λ ↑ X

In this Letter, we investigate the spontaneous transverse polarization of Λ hyperons produced in unpolarized pp collisions inside a jet, by adopting a TMD approach where transverse momentum effects are included only in the fragmentation process. We will present predictions based on the parametrizations of the Λ polarizing fragmentation function as extracted from fits to Belle e + e – data. These estimates will be compared against preliminary STAR data. We will then be able to explore the universality properties of the quark polarizing fragmentation function and, for the first time, the role of its gluon counterpart.

Simultaneous reweighting of Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is extended to the case of multiple independent extractions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). By exploiting the data on transverse single spin asymmetries, A N , for inclusive pion production in polarized proton-proton collisions measured at RHIC, we perform a simultaneous reweighting of the quark Sivers, transversity and Collins TMD functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and annihilation into hadron pairs. The impact of the implementation of the Soffer bound, as well as the differences between older and newer e + e - data, are investigated. The agreement with A N data at large-x F values, a kinematical region complementary to those explored in SIDIS measurements, is enhanced, improving the knowledge of the polarized quark TMDs in the large-x region.

Search for heavy Majorana neutrinos in e ± e ± and e ± μ ± final states via WW scattering in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy Majorana neutrinos in scattering of same-sign W boson pairs in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the LHC is reported. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 , collected with the ATLAS detector during 2015–2018. The search is performed in final states including a same-sign ee or eμ pair and at least two jets with large invariant mass and a large rapidity difference. No significant excess of events with respect to the Standard Model background predictions is observed. The results are interpreted in a benchmark scenario of the Phenomenological Type-I Seesaw model. New constraints are set on the values of the |V eN | 2 and |V eN V$^{*}_{μN}$| parameters for heavy Majorana neutrino masses between 50 GeV and 20 TeV, where V ℓN is the matrix element describing the mixing of the heavy Majorana neutrino mass eigenstate with the Standard Model neutrino of flavour ℓ = e,μ. The sensitivity to the Weinberg operator is investigated and constraints on the effective ee and eμ Majorana neutrino masses are reported. The statistical combination of the ee and eμ channels with the previously published μμ channel is performed.
