Glauber calculations of polarization of Lyman-alpha resulting from e/-/-H/1s/ collisions.

We have calculated the polarization fraction of the Lyman-alpha radiation emitted in e/-/-H/1s/ collisions using the Glauber, Born, and various Vainshtein approximations, and have compared these predictions with observation. We find that the Born, Glauber and all forms of the Vainshtein yield results which are very close to each other and to the data in the energy range from 30 to 700 eV. The comparatively small differences between the various approximations are detailed in the text; also, the reason for the close agreement of the predicted polarization fractions - although the computed 1s-2p total and differential cross sections are not so close - is explained. With respect to the Glauber approximation, the importance of computing the phase integral along a direction perpendicular to the momentum transfer q at each value of q, is stressed.

Accessing the gluon GTMD F 1 , 4 in exclusive π 0 production in e p collisions

We demonstrate that the longitudinal single target-spin asymmetry in exclusive π 0 production in e p collisions can give access to the imaginary part of the gluon generalized transverse momentum distribution (GTMD) F 1 , 4 . Such a longitudinal spin asymmetry that results from the Coulomb-nuclear interference effect, leads to a characteristic azimuthal angular correlation of sin 2 ϕ , where ϕ is the azimuthal angle between the scattered lepton transverse momentum and the recoil proton’s transverse momentum. We also present a numerical estimate of the asymmetry for the kinematics accessible at EIC and EicC. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for baryon junctions in e+A collisions at the electron ion collider

Constituent quarks in a nucleon are the essential elements in the standard “quark model” associated with the electric charge, spin, mass, and baryon number of a nucleon. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describes nucleon as a composite object containing current quarks (valence quarks and sea (anti-)quarks) and gluons. These subatomic elements and their interactions are known to contribute in complex ways to the overall nucleon spin and mass. In the early development of QCD theory in the 1970s, an alternative hypothesis postulated that the baryon number might manifest itself through a non-perturbative configuration of gluon fields forming a Y-shaped topology known as the gluon junction. In this work, we propose to test such hypothesis by measuring (i) the Regge intercept of the net-baryon distributions for e+(p)Au collisions, (ii) baryon and charge transport in the isobaric ratio between e+Ru and e+Zr collisions, and (iii) target flavor dependence of proton and antiproton yields at large rapidity, transported from the hydrogen and deuterium targets in e+p(d) collisions. Our study indicates that these measurements at the EIC can help determine what carries the baryon number.

Centrality definition in e + A collisions at the electron–ion collider

Here, in this work, we investigate the feasibility of defining centrality in electron–ion collisions at the electron–ion collider (EIC) by examining the correlation between the impact parameter and several observables, including total energy, total transverse momentum, and total number of particles. Using the BeAGLE Monte Carlo generator, we simulate e + Au and e + Ru collisions at different energies and analyze the correlation between the impact parameter and these observables across different kinematic regions. Our findings indicate that the correlation is weak in the central rapidity region but becomes stronger in the forward and far-forward rapidity regions. However, the correlation is not sufficiently robust to allow for precise centrality determination. We conclude that defining centrality in electron–ion collisions is more challenging than in ion–ion collisions, necessitating further studies to develop a robust centrality definition for the EIC.

The graviton luminosity of the sun and other stars

Graviton production in electron-electron (e-e) and electron-ion (e-z) scattering is evaluated in the Born approximation. The calculation is compared with that for photon production, that is, Coulomb quadrupole bremsstrahlung, and a number of results are taken over from that problem. Application is made to the sun, and it is found that for the solar plasma the main contribution to the graviton luminosity comes from the central core at r/R approximately 0.1. The total luminosity (Lg) in gravitons is about 7.9 x 10 to the 14th ergs/s, close to an earlier estimate by Weinberg (1965, 1972); about 33 percent of the total results from e-e collisions with the rest from e-z collisions (mainly e-p and e-alpha). Approximate corrections to Born formulas are evaluated, and this Lg includes the associated (approximately + or - 10 percent, respectively) modification. The quantum-mechanical aspects of the solar Lg problem are discussed, and it is shown why a previous classical calculation overestimated Lg by about an order of magnitude. Production of gravitons in binary collisions in other types of stars is discussed briefly. It is found that Lg varies very little along the main sequence. White dwarfs have a typical graviton luminosity LWD approximately 10 to the 19th ergs/s, while neutron stars have LNS approximately 10 to the 25th ergs/s; these estimates are very rough.

Joint thrust and TMD resummation in electron-positron and electron-proton collisions

In this work, we present the framework for obtaining precise predictions for the transverse momentum of hadrons with respect to the thrust axis in e + e - collisions. This will enable a precise extraction of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions from a recent measurement by the Belle Collaboration. Our analysis takes into account, for the first time, the nontrivial interplay between the hadron transverse momentum and the cut on the thrust event shape. To this end, we identify three different kinematic regions, derive the corresponding factorization theorems within Soft Collinear Effective Theory, and present all ingredients needed for the joint resummation of the transverse momentum and thrust spectrum at NNLL accuracy. One kinematic region can give rise to non-global logarithms (NGLs), and we describe how to include the leading NGLs. We also discuss alternative measurements in e + e - collisions that can be used to access the TMD fragmentation function. Finally, by using crossing symmetry, we obtain a new way to constrain TMD parton distributions, by measuring the displacement of the thrust axis in ep collisions.

Enhanced Production of Λ b 0 Baryons in High-Multiplicity p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The production rate of Λ b 0 baryons relative to B 0 mesons in p p collisions at a center-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of Λ b 0 to B 0 production cross sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in e + e − collisions, and increases by a factor of ∼ 2 with increasing multiplicity. At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of Λ b 0 to B 0 cross sections is higher than what is measured in e + e − collisions, but converges with the e + e − ratio as the momentum increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy b quarks into final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment produced in the collision. Comparisons with several models and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Collectivity in Ultra-peripheral Heavy-ion and \(e+A\) Collisions

We review recent theoretical progress in describing collective effects in photon+nucleus collisions. The approaches considered range from the color glass condensate, where correlations are encoded in the initial state, to hydrodynamic frameworks, where a strong final-state response to the initial geometry of the collision is the key ingredient to generate momentum-space correlations.

Studies of elastic e-NH3 collisions

Differential and momentum-transfer cross sections for the elastic scattering of electrons by NH3 have been obtained for collision energies of between 2.5 and 20 eV using the fixed-nuclei static-exchange approximation of the Schwinger variational principle. At intermediate and large scattering angles, good agreement is found between calculated and relative experimental cross sections. The differential cross sections reveal evidence of a weak d-wave enhancement around 8 eV.

Polarization effects in low-energy e-CH4 collisions

Polarization effects on the cross sections for elastic scattering of electrons by the CH4 molecule, for collision energies from 7.5 down to 0.02 eV, are presently studied on the basis of Takatsuka and McKoy's (1981) Schwinger multichannel formulation. While the closed-channel expansion through which polarization effects are encompassed is not fully converged, the cross sections obtained nevertheless exhibit a Ramsauer-Townsend minimum in the 0.1-0.2 eV range; this is about 0.3 lower than the experimentally obtained value. At 7.5 eV, however, the calculated differential cross-sections are in excellent agreement with measured values.

Application of the Finite-Element Z-Matrix Method to e-H2 Collisions

The present study adapts the Z-matrix formulation using a mixed basis of finite elements and Gaussians. This is a energy-independent basis which allows flexible boundary conditions and is amenable to efficient algorithms for evaluating the necessary matrix elements with molecular targets.

The Photodetachment of Ps ion and Low-Energy e(+) -H Collisions

Two calculations in the area of positron collisions are presented. The first is the calculation of the photodetachment cross section of the positronium negative ion (Ps-) using accurate variational wave functions for both the initial bound-state and the final P continuum state. The second is the calculation of partial wave cross sections for Ps(1s)-formation in ef -H(ls) collisions using the hyperspherical hidden crossing method. Since the S-wave Stiickelberg phase is close to pi, the very small S-wave Ps(1s) formation cross section can be understood in terms of destructive interference. Other examples in positron collisions are given where it is either known or expected that destructive interference is the cause of the small S-wave Ps(1s) formation cross section. In addition, examples are presented of processes in atomic physics where the Stiickelberg phase is a multiple of pi/2.

First measurement of 𝐷 𝑠⁢1 ⁡(1 + )⁢(2536) + and 𝐷$^{*}_{𝑠⁢2}$⁡(2 + )⁢(2573) + production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the LHC

The production yields of the orbitally excited charm-strange mesons D s⁢1 ⁡(1 + )⁢(2536)+ and 𝐷$^{*}_{𝑠⁢2}$⁡(2 + )⁢(2573) + were measured for the first time in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The D$^{+}_{s⁢1}$ and D$^{*+}_{s⁢2}$ mesons were measured at midrapidity (|𝑦| < 0.5) in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions in the transverse-momentum interval 2< 𝑝 T < 24 GeV/𝑐. Their production yields relative to the D$^{+}_{s}$ ground-state yield were found to be compatible between minimum-bias and high-multiplicity collisions, as well as with previous measurements in e ± ⁢p and e + ⁢e − collisions. The measured D$^{+}_{s⁢1}$/D$^{+}_{s}$ and D$^{*+}_{s⁢2}$/D$^{+}_{s}$ yield ratios are described by statistical hadronization models and can be used to tune the parameters governing the production of excited charm-strange hadrons in Monte Carlo generators, such as pythia 8.

Expected ${\boldsymbol H \xrightarrow{} {\boldsymbol{\mu^+\mu^-}}} $ measurement precision with ${\boldsymbol { e^{+}e^{-}}{\bf \xrightarrow{}}{ \boldsymbol{Z(q\bar{q})H}}}$ production at the CEPC *

Here, a search for the dimuon decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson is performed using Monte Carlo simulated events to mimic data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 ab -1 collected with the Circular Electron-Positron Collider detector in e + e - collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =240 GeV. This study investigates the e + e - →ZH, Z → $q\bar{q}$, H → μ + μ - process, and the expected significance considering only the statistical uncertainty in the data for a background-only hypothesis for a Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV is found to be 6.1 σ, corresponding to a precision of 19%. The systematic impacts from the background Monte Carlo statistical fluctuations are estimated to be negligible. Moreover, the dependence of the measurement accuracy on the muon momentum resolution of the CEPC detector is investigated. It is found that the muon momentum resolution must be better than 204 MeV to discover the H →μμ process at the nominal integrated luminosity. If the resolution is 100% worse than the designed parameter, the integrated luminosity must be greater than 7.2 ab -1 to reach 5σ significance.

Emergence of Long-Range Angular Correlations in Low-Multiplicity Proton-Proton Collisions

This Letter presents the measurement of near-side associated per-trigger yields, denoted ridge yields, from the analysis of angular correlations of charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV . Long-range ridge yields are extracted for pairs of charged particles with a pseudorapidity difference of 1.4 < | Δ η | < 1.8 and a transverse momentum of 1 < p T < 2 GeV / c , as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity. This Letter extends the measurements of the ridge yield to the low multiplicity region, where in hadronic collisions it is typically conjectured that a strongly interacting medium is unlikely to be formed. The precision of the new low multiplicity results allows for the first direct quantitative comparison with the results obtained in e + e − collisions at s = 91 GeV and s = 183 – 209 GeV , where initial-state effects such as preequilibrium dynamics and collision geometry are not expected to play a role. In the multiplicity range 8 ≲ ⟨ N ch ⟩ ≲ 24 where the e + e − results have good precision, the measured ridge yields in p p collisions are substantially larger than the limits set in e + e − annihilations. Consequently, the findings presented in this Letter suggest that the processes involved in e + e − annihilations do not contribute significantly to the emergence of long-range correlations in p p collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Measurements of Born cross sections for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . and e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . at s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV

Using e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the Born cross sections of e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . and e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . are measured for the first time at center-of-mass energies of s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV. Nonzero cross sections are observed very close to the production threshold. The measured Born cross sections of e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . are about 2–3 times greater than those of e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . , providing the similar behavior as semileptonic decays of Λ b 0 , but different behavior from that in the hadronic decays of Λ b 0 . The Born cross sections are 15.6 ± 3.1 ± 0.9 pb and 29.4 ± 3.7 ± 2.7 pb for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2595 ) − + c . c . , and are 43.4 ± 4.0 ± 4.1 pb and 76.8 ± 6.5 ± 4.2 pb for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . at s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV, respectively. Based on the polar angle distributions of the Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − and Λ c ( 2625 ) + , the form-factor ratios | G E | 2 + 3 | G M | 2 / | G C | are determined for e + e − → Λ c + Λ ¯ c ( 2625 ) − + c . c . for the first time, which are 5.95 ± 4.07 ± 0.15 and 0.94 ± 0.32 ± 0.02 at s = 4918.0 and 4950.9 MeV, respectively. Search for the e + e − → ϕ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) process at BESIII

Based on 368.5 p b − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies 4.914 and 4.946 GeV by the BESIII detector, the e + e − → ϕ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) process is searched for the first time. No significant signal is observed and the upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the product of the Born cross section σ ( e + e − → ϕ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) ) and the branching fraction B [ χ c 1 ( 3872 ) → π + π − J / ψ ] at 4.914 and 4.946 GeV are set to be 0.85 and 0.96 pb, respectively. These measurements provide useful information for the production of the χ c 1 ( 3872 ) at e + e − colliders and deepen our understanding about the nature of this particle.
