Catalyst design to direct high-octane gasoline fuel properties for improved engine efficiency

The paraffin-to-olefin (P/O) ratio in gasoline fuel is a critical metric affecting fuel properties and engine efficiency. In the conversion of dimethyl ether (DME) to high-octane hydrocarbons over BEA zeolite catalysts, the P/O ratio can be controlled through catalyst design. Here, we report bimetallic catalysts that balance the net hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activity during DME homologation. The Cu-Zn/BEA catalyst exhibited greater relative dehydrogenation activity attributed to higher ionic site density, resulting in a lower P/O ratio (6.6) versus the benchmark Cu/BEA (9.4). The Cu-Ni/BEA catalyst exhibited increased hydrogenation due to reduced Ni species, resulting in a higher P/O ratio (19). The product fuel properties were estimated with an efficiency merit function and compared against finished gasolines and a typical alkylate blendstock. Merit values for the hydrocarbon product from all three BEA catalysts exceeded those of the comparison fuels (0–5.3), with the product from Cu-Zn/BEA exhibiting the highest merit value (9.7).

Unidirectional Sidechain Engineering to Construct Dual‐Asymmetric Acceptors for 19.23 % Efficiency Organic Solar Cells with Low Energy Loss and Efficient Charge Transfer

Abstract Achieving both high open‐circuit voltage ( V oc ) and short‐circuit current density ( J sc ) to boost power‐conversion efficiency (PCE) is a major challenge for organic solar cells (OSCs), wherein high energy loss ( E loss ) and inefficient charge transfer usually take place. Here, three new Y‐series acceptors of mono‐asymmetric asy‐YC11 and dual‐asymmetric bi‐asy‐YC9 and bi‐asy‐YC12 are developed. They share the same asymmetric D 1 AD 2 (D 1 =thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene and D 2 =selenopheno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene) fused‐core but have different unidirectional sidechain on D 1 side, allowing fine‐tuned molecular properties, such as intermolecular interaction, packing pattern, and crystallinity. Among the binary blends, the PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC12 one has better morphology with appropriate phase separation and higher order packing than the PM6 : asy‐YC9 and PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC11 ones. Therefore, the PM6 : bi‐asy‐YC12‐based OSCs offer a higher PCE of 17.16 % with both high V oc and J sc , due to the reduced E loss and efficient charge transfer properties. Inspired by the high V oc and strong NIR‐absorption, bi‐asy‐YC12 is introduced into efficient binary PM6 : L8‐BO to construct ternary OSCs. Thanks to the broadened absorption, optimized morphology, and furtherly minimized E loss , the PM6 : L8‐BO : bi‐asy‐YC12‐based OSCs achieve a champion PCE of 19.23 %, which is one of the highest efficiencies among these annealing‐free devices. Our developed unidirectional sidechain engineering for constructing bi‐asymmetric Y‐series acceptors provides an approach to boost PCE of OSCs.

Antisolvent‐Mediated Air Quench for High‐Efficiency Air‐Processed Carbon‐Based Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have becoma a leading low‐cost photovoltaic technology, achieving power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 26.1%. However, their commercialization is hindered by stability issues and the need for controlled processing environments. Carbon‐electrode‐based PSCs (C‐PSCs) offer enhanced stability and cost‐effectiveness compared to traditional metal‐electrode PSCs, i.e., Au and Ag. However, processing challenges persist, particularly in air conditions where moisture sensitivity poses a significant hurdle. Herein, a novel air processing technique is presented for planar C‐PSCs that incorporates antisolvent vapors, such as chlorobenzene, into a controlled air‐quenching process. This method effectively mitigates moisture‐induced instability, resulting in champion PCEs exceeding 20% and robust stability under ambient conditions. The approach retains 80% of initial efficiency after 30 h of operation at maximum power point without encapsulation. This antisolvent‐mediated air‐quenching technique represents a significant advancement in the scalable production of C‐PSCs, paving the way for future large‐scale deployment.

Fuel Property Effects on Knock Propensity and Thermal Efficiency in a Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine

Engine knock remains one of the major barriers to further improvement in thermal efficiency of Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition (DISI) engines. While Research Octane Number and Motor Octane Number are often used as standard rating methods for knock resistance of fuels, the impacts of other fuel properties on knock propensity in modern engines such as heat of vaporization (HoV) and laminar flame speed (LFS) require better understanding in order to co-optimize fuels and engine designs to achieve higher thermal efficiency and lower CO2 emission. In the present study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to model a boosted DISI engine with a focus on knock prediction and fuel property effects. A level-set G-equation model is employed to capture turbulent premixed combustion, and is coupled with a transported Livengood-Wu (L-W) integral approach to predict autoignition in the unburnt region. A criterion associated with the L-W integral is developed to accurately predict knock onset and knock-limited spark-advance. This model is then applied to a sensitivity analysis of HoV and LFS on knock tendency and thermal efficiency. The pressure-temperature trajectory framework is applied and extended to study the fuel effects on auto-ignition process in the engine. An existing efficiency-based merit function, which is derived from experiments for boosted SI engines, is evaluated and improved based on the current CFD results.

Efficient electrocatalytic valorization of chlorinated organic water pollutant to ethylene

Electrochemistry can provide an efficient and sustainable way to treat environmental waters polluted by chlorinated organic compounds. However, the electrochemical valorization of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA) is currently challenged by the lack of a catalyst that can selectively convert DCA in aqueous solutions into ethylene. Here, in this work, we report a catalyst comprising cobalt phthalocyanine molecules assembled on multiwalled carbon nanotubes that can electrochemically decompose aqueous DCA with high current and energy efficiencies. Ethylene is produced at high rates with unprecedented ~100% Faradaic efficiency across wide electrode potential and reactant concentration ranges. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations reveal that the rate-determining step is the first C–Cl bond breaking, which does not involve protons—a key mechanistic feature that enables cobalt phthalocyanine/carbon nanotube to efficiently catalyse DCA dechlorination and suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction. The nanotubular structure of the catalyst enables us to shape it into a flow-through electrified membrane, which we have used to demonstrate >95% DCA removal from simulated water samples with environmentally relevant DCA and electrolyte concentrations.

Deletion of biofilm synthesis in Eubacterium limosum ATCC 8486 improves handling and transformation efficiency

Abstract Eubacterium limosum is an acetogenic bacterium of potential industrial relevance for its ability to efficiently metabolize a range of single carbon compounds. However, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) produced by the type strain ATCC 8486 is a serious impediment to bioprocessing and genetic engineering. To remove these barriers, here we bioinformatically identified genes involved in EPS biosynthesis, and targeted several of the most promising candidates for inactivation, using a homologous recombination-based approach. Deletion of a single genomic region encoding homologues for epsABC, ptkA, and tmkA resulted in a strain incapable of producing EPS. This strain is significantly easier to handle by pipetting and centrifugation, and retains important wild-type phenotypes including the ability to grow on methanol and carbon dioxide and limited oxygen tolerance. Additionally, this strain is also more genetically tractable with a 2-fold increase in transformation efficiency compared to the highest previous reports. This work advances a simple, rapid protocol for gene knockouts in E. limosum using only the native homologous recombination machinery. These results will hasten the development of this organism as a workhorse for valorization of single carbon substrates, as well as facilitate exploration of its role in the human gut microbiota.

Optimizing Traffic Signal Control to Enhance Transportation Efficiency and Maximize Pedestrian Benefits in the Road Network

Increasing urban mobility requirements demand efficient transportation system strategies for both vehicular and pedestrian movement. This study enhances the Decentralized Graph-based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (DGMARL) approach, originally tailored for vehicular traffic signal timing, to incorporate pedestrian traffic dynamics. The improved algorithm considers crucial metrics such as Eco_PI, assesses vehicle fuel consumption by factoring in stops and delays, and addresses pedestrian waiting time, crucial for system efficiency while acknowledging driver waiting time impact. Utilizing Digital Twin simulation along the MLK Smart Corridor in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the algorithm's performance is compared for various pedestrian control scenarios. To evaluate the effectiveness of DGMARL, this study compared DGMARL-enabled signal management with automated pedestrian traffic detection and an actuated signal management system (real-word baseline) with pedestrian recall, which predetermingly enforces a pedestrian phase every cycle. Findings indicate substantial improvements with DGMARL, showing a 28.29% enhancement in vehicle Eco_PI, a 60.55 % reduction in pedestrian waiting time, and a 55.74% decrease in driver stop delay, on average, compared to the baseline actuated signal timing plan.

Optical Characterization of Defects in High-Efficiency (Ag,Cu)(In,Ga)Se2

We applied time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy to study optimized chalcopyrite (Ag,Cu)(In,Ga)Se2 thin films. The device shows power conversion efficiency of 18.7%. The metastable defect VSe-VCu within ACIGS at EV+0.98 eV is detected in sub-bandgap TRPL excitation spectra. TRPL lifetime of 50 ns is limited by the density of mid-gap defects such as CuGa or CuIn. The similarity of TRPL dynamics before and after light soaking indicates the optimized ACIGS thin film is less metastable because the density of VCu-VSe defect is reduced to below 10^15 cm^-3. This study indicates that ACIGS has improved cell efficiency and reliability characteristics.

Computationally aided, entropy-driven synthesis of highly efficient and durable multi-elemental alloy catalysts

Multi-elemental alloy nanoparticles (MEA-NPs) hold great promise for catalyst discovery in a virtually unlimited compositional space. However, rational and controllable synthesize of these intrinsically complex structures remains a challenge. Here, we report the computationally aided, entropy-driven design and synthesis of highly efficient and durable catalyst MEA-NPs. The computational strategy includes prescreening of millions of compositions, prediction of alloy formation by density functional theory calculations, and examination of structural stability by a hybrid Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics method. Selected compositions can be efficiently and rapidly synthesized at high temperature (e.g., 1500 K, 0.5 s) with excellent thermal stability. We applied these MEA-NPs for catalytic NH 3 decomposition and observed outstanding performance due to the synergistic effect of multi-elemental mixing, their small size, and the alloy phase. We anticipate that the computationally aided rational design and rapid synthesis of MEA-NPs are broadly applicable for various catalytic reactions and will accelerate material discovery.

Cavity electro-optics in thin-film lithium niobate for efficient microwave-to-optical transduction

Linking superconducting quantum devices to optical fibers via microwave-optical quantum transducers may enable large-scale quantum networks. For this application, transducers based on the Pockels electro-optic (EO) effect are promising for their direct conversion mechanism, high bandwidth, and potential for low-noise operation. However, previously demonstrated EO transducers require large optical pump power to overcome weak EO coupling and reach high efficiency. Here, we create an EO transducer in thin-film lithium niobate, a platform that provides low optical loss and strong EO coupling. We demonstrate on-chip transduction efficiencies of up to and of optical pump power. The transduction efficiency can be improved by further reducing the microwave resonator’s piezoelectric coupling to acoustic modes, increasing the optical resonator quality factor to previously demonstrated levels, and changing the electrode geometry for enhanced EO coupling. We expect that with further development, EO transducers in thin-film lithium niobate can achieve near-unity efficiency with low optical pump power.

Online multi-objective Bayesian optimization of injection efficiency and beam lifetime with skew quadrupoles at NSLS-II

At NSLS-II, the vertical emittance of electron beam is typically blown up to ~30 pm with a coupling wave to increase beam lifetime during user operation. As more and more insertion devices are added to the storage ring, injection efficiency to the ring drops noticeably in certain machine states, apparently due to degraded dynamic apertures. To help alleviate this issue, we have recently performed online multi-objective Bayesian optimization to increase injection efficiency while maintaining beam lifetime, by adjusting the strengths of 15 skew quadrupoles in non-dispersive sections. We report the results of this optimization effort.

Recovering the efficiency of AlGaInP red micro-LEDs using sidewall treatments

A sidewall treatment process is proposed to recover the external quantum efficiency (EQE) loss in AlGaInP micro-LEDs ( μ LEDs). The proposed sidewall treatment consists of thermal annealing, ammonium sulfide chemical treatment, and sidewall passivation using atomic-layer deposition (ALD). The devices with sidewall treatment show improved optical power of more than 500% and 190% at 5 and 100 A cm −2 , respectively, compared to devices with ALD sidewall passivation. The reduction in EQE was 20% when shrinking the device dimensions from 100 × 100 to 20 × 20 μ m 2 . Finally, this work reveals that AlGaInP μ LEDs can be energy efficient by employing proper sidewall treatments.

Cost-Efficiency balanced polymer acceptors based on lowly fused Dithienopyrrolo[3, 2b]benzothiadiazole for 16.04% efficiency All-Polymer solar cells

All-polymer solar cells (All-PSCs) attracted increasing attention due to the outstanding thermal stability and mechanical properties. The current prevailing polymer acceptors for most efficient All-PSCs are polymerized high-performance small molecule acceptor of Y6, i.e. the dithienothiopheno[3,2-b]-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole (BTTP) based polymers. However, the BTTP-based polymers often show relatively shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level and high figure of merit (FOM), which limit the rational selection of paring donor polymers. Herein, we presented two low-cost polymer acceptors, namely as BTP-T2F and BTP-2T2F, based on lowly fused dithienopyrrolo[3,2b]benzothiadiazole (BTP, removing two thiophene cycles from BTTP). Here the BTP-based polymers exhibited deeper HOMO levels around –5.90 eV, which could match variable donor polymers with low-lying HOMO levels, such as low-cost PTQ10. Additionally, the synthesis was significantly simplified compared to BTTP-based polymers. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.32% was achieved in binary blend device containing PTQ10:BTP-2T2F. By adding a miscibility-enhancing PBDTCl-TPD as a third component, the top PCE of 16.04% was obtained in ternary blend All-PSCs. Combining the high device performance and low estimated cost, extraordinary cost-efficiency balance was realized within these BTP-based polymer acceptors.

Efficient excimer-based white OLEDs with reduced efficiency roll-off

A tetradentate Pt(II) complex, Pt2O2-p2m, which exhibits both efficient monomer and excimer emission, was synthesized. Through rational device design to broaden the recombination zone, an OLED device employing Pt2O2-p2m demonstrated an impressively high peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 21.5% and a warm white emission with a color rendering index of 71 and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.409, 0.458). Moreover, a reduced efficiency roll-off was also observed to retain high EQE values of 20% EQE at 1000 cd/m 2 and 17% EQE at 5000 cd/m 2 , and an LT70 (time to 70% initial luminance) was estimated to be over 150 h at 1000 cd/m2 under constant operation at accelerated driving conditions.
