Electromagnetic wave propagation and wave-vector diagram in space-time periodic media.

Analysis of TE and TM wave propagation in space-time periodic media such as dielectrics, isotropic plasmas and uniaxial plasmas. A numerical solution is obtained for media with sinusoidal periodicity. Wave-vector diagrams are plotted to facilitate studies of dipole radiation, wave propagation in waveguides and wave interactions with a half-space.

Proceedings of the Aero-Optics Symposium on Electromagnetic Wave Propagation from Aircraft

Data are presented from a series of wind-tunnel and flight experiments concerning natural and induced turbulence around an airplane, and the effects on propagation characteristics of an emitter mounted in the airplane. Some of the papers are concerned with phase distortion of the propagating radiation, and others deal with mechanical jitter of the optical elements when exposed to open-cavity turbulence. The results include both aerodynamic and optical measurements and a consideration of the relationship between the two. Primary emphasis is on the dynamic disturbances, but theoretical and experimental evaluations of steady-state distortions are also presented.

Effect of surface deposits on electromagnetic waves propagating in uniform ducts

A finite-element Galerkin formulation was used to study the effect of material surface deposits on the reflective characteristics of straight uniform ducts with PEC (perfectly electric conducting) walls. Over a wide frequency range, the effect of both single and multiple surface deposits on the duct reflection coefficient were examined. The power reflection coefficient was found to be significantly increased by the addition of deposits on the wall.

A Test-Bed Validation of Electromagnetic Surface Wave Propagation Along a Dielectric-Coated Metal Pipe

This paper provides a summary of the results of an attempt at experimental verification of the propagation of electromagnetic surface waves at microwaves frequencies, in and along the uniform dielectric coating of a circular cylindrical metal pipe, based on the previously established theoretical investigation. These experimental results are of value for the diagnostic of anomalies on the surface of tar-coated pipes used in protecting the underground power transmission cables (feeder pipes). A test-bed was designed and implemented using an aluminum tubes (10” diameter) with an acrylic tube coating (0.25” thickness). Two identical wave launcher/receiver arrays, each of 32 elements around the tube for relatively uniform radiation/reception, were designed and fabricated at the frequency of interest (~6 GHz). This arrangement was put in a specially designed small anechoic chamber and attached to a network analyzer. A variety of tests were performed to establish the launch efficiency, prove surface wave propagation along, and reflection from different types of anomalies on the coating. In the paper, a number of test results and supporting graphs will be provided and future work for improving the performance of the launch array and the test-bed arrangement for better results will be outlined.

Propagation of electromagnetic waves parallel to the magnetic field in the nightside Venus ionosphere

The propagation of electromagnetic waves parallel to the magnetic field in the nightside Venus ionosphere is presented in a theoretical and numerical analysis. The model assumes a source of electromagnetic radiation in the Venus atmosphere, such as that produced by lightning. Specifically addressed is wave propagation in the altitude range z = 130-160 km at the four frequencies detectable by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter Electric Field Detector: 100 Hz, 730 Hz, 5.4 kHz, and 30 kHz. Parameterizations of the wave intensities, peak electron density, and Poynting flux as a function of magnetic field are presented. The waves are found to propagate most easily in conditions of low electron density and high magnetic field. The results of the model are consistent with observational data.

Nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities.

The problem of propagation of finite-amplitude electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities is studied. Using a recently developed perturbation technique, a general equation for finite amplitude coherent waves is derived. Included in this equation are both the effects of quasi-harmonic nonlinear heating of electrons and random scattering by irregularities. The equation is solved in general by the equivalent linearization procedure. The amplitude of the coherent wave is found to be attenuated by collision and scattering. Both attenuation are affected by the nonlinear heating of the electrons. Curves showing the results for a specific example will be presented.
