In-Water Data Acquisition Tool Supports Four Marine Energy Projects

The NREL-developed Modular Ocean Data Acquisition (MODAQ) system is built from open-source hardware and software. The tool can both collect and store data and even share curated information through the cloud. Marine energy developers can work with NREL's engineers to design their own customized MODAQ and capture high-quality field data to help monitor and improve their technology designs. For example, users could assess how much power their device produces at sea, analyze the durability of a specific device component, or even control their device from a desk halfway around the world.

Department of Energy Project DE-SC0012198: Probing Electron-Molecule Scattering with HHG: Theory and Experiment (Final Report)

The study of the motion of atoms in molecules is important to understanding many areas of physical and life sciences. Such motion occurs on many different times scales, with electronic motion occurring on a sub-femtosecond time scale, and simple vibrational motion in tens to hundreds of femtoseconds. One way to follow such processes in real time is by the use of shortpulsed lasers, and in particular by studying time-resolved photoionization and the related process of high-harmonic generation (HHG). Thus there has been much effort to develop the tools necessary to probe molecular systems using short pulse lasers and understanding the sensitivity of the different possible probes to the time dependent geometric structure as well as the electronic structure of molecules. Our research has particularly focused on the connection between high-field processes and the more traditional weak field photoionization processes. Strong field and weak field processes can be connected through models that involve the same matrix elements. We have demonstrated in our study of HHG from SF 6 that the spectrum is sensitive to the interplay between the angular dependence of the ionization step and recombination step. In our study of rescattering spectroscopy, we have shown that with a combination of experiment and theory, we can use this high-field spectroscopy to determine molecular structure in molecules such as C 2 H 4 . We have also developed new computational tools based on overset grids to enable studies on larger molecular systems which use much more robust numerical approaches so that the resulting code can be a tool that non-specialists can use to study related systems.

Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Project Strategic Energy Plan for Washington County, Maine

This Strategic Energy Plan (SEP) for Washington County, Maine was developed through the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Project (ETIPP) to address local challenges related to electricity reliability, affordability, and safety. Grounded in a "relational infrastructure" approach, the plan recognizes that improved energy outcomes depend not only on physical grid investments but also on strengthened coordination and trust between utilities and communities. Using utility-provided reliability data, public datasets, and community input, the plan identifies key risks, including vegetation-related outages, high energy burden, and vulnerability among elderly and medically dependent populations. The SEP establishes three priority areas: hazard mitigation for energy infrastructure, outage safety and emergency readiness, and energy assistance and thermal safety. It outlines community-driven actions designed to complement utility-led system improvements, including targeted outreach, municipal coordination, and expanded access to energy programs. The plan also situates local conditions within broader state policy, market dynamics, and funding opportunities. Intended as a living document, this SEP provides a scalable framework for collaborative action to improve resilience, safety, and affordability in rural energy systems.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Enabling Extreme Real-Time Grid Integration of Solar Energy (ENERGISE) Project: Multiday and Intraday Energy Availability Product [Slides]

This presentation will provide an overview of the development of a Multi-Day Energy Availability Product under the DOE ENERGISE project, conducted in collaboration with Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the National Laboratory of the Rockies, Polaris, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Existing market clearing processes are limited to day-ahead and real-time horizons, which may result in insufficient pricing signals and compensation for resource availability over multi-day timeframes (e.g., incentives for fuel procurement and energy-limited resource preparedness). This effort aims to develop a new market product and associated clearing process to value and procure resource energy availability over a multi-day horizon. The team will present progress to date and solicit advisory group feedback on proposed methodologies and preliminary findings.

Better Climate Challenge Working Groups Non-Energy Benefits of Energy Projects-Improving Financial Payback

Energy efficiency is a key strategy recently identified by the United States Department of Energy as a pillar of industrial decarbonization. For manufacturing companies, improving energy efficiency will reduce money spent on energy utilities such as gas, electricity, and oil. Energy improvement projects also provide valuable benefits outside of simple operating cost reductions, such as reducing the carbon footprint, improving safety metrics and even enhancing quality and productivity. Unfortunately, energy efficiency projects have typically faced an adoption gap, even when they meet criteria such as payback period for capital projects. The inclusion and quantification of non-energy benefits (NEBs), also known as co-benefits, in the decision-making process for energy efficiency projects can improve the overall financial payback periods for those projects as well as potentially improve the company's key performance metrics aligned with business strategies. There are no readily available tools that facilitate this, however, and the most used tools for energy audits address NEBs in a perfunctory way if at all. We integrated research for finding and quantifying non-energy benefits of energy efficiency projects into a commonly recognized continuous improvement practice, the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) Process. This process, along with software and supplemental materials, guides energy assessments to find and to quantify NEBs associated with energy conservation opportunities. Our aim is to deliver an easy to use and effective process and software tool and to maximize return on investment for energy efficiency projects as well as contribute to companies' strategic performance goals.

Laser Surface Processing of Alloys for Corrosion Protection (Final Project Report of Marine Energy Seedling Project)

This is the final project report for the MHK Seedling project. The report describes use of laser surface processing (LSP) to modify the surface of test materials (Al, steel) and the corrosion testing performed on the resulting samples in different corrosion environments. Data shows that LSP improved the corrosion resistance of Al and steel used in this work relative to respective non-LSP samples. The data also showed that each material had a specific range of laser processing conditions where the beneficial effects of LSP (i.e. improvement in corrosion protection) were observed. Application of LSP to enable low-cost materials in marine environments, additional microstructural analysis and long-term testing are proposed to further develop this technology for marine renewable energy and systems.

Energy Savings Performance Contracting for Small Projects

Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC) is a budget-neutral approach to make building improvements that reduce energy and water use and increase operational efficiency. ESPC can help public-sector planners use tomorrow’s energy savings to fund today's facility and infrastructure upgrades. This resource highlights strategies and case studies for implementing ESPC in smaller towns, rural counties, and small school districts to complete energy upgrades and maximize energy and cost savings.

Better bang for your buck? Comparing savings realization from ESPCs and direct-funded projects

Energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs) offer an opportunity to tremendously scale decarbonization projects, given their paid-from-savings premise. However, prospective customers still question whether ESPC is worth the effort and expense. This study evaluates the savings realization rates of ESPCs compared to direct-funded projects using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager (ESPM) benchmarking data. It compares normalized EUIs from ESPM before and after energy conservation projects implemented via ESPC or direct funding in roughly 450 federal buildings. This documented change, ideally a savings, can then be compared to the estimated savings from the energy conservation initiative in order to generate a rough realization rate. Preliminary results indicate a notably greater savings realization rate for the ESPC buildings (median = 105% of estimated savings) than those that underwent direct-funded projects (median = 46%). Because of a shortage of good quality data and the wide range in results, the difference is only significant at the p < 0.20 level. However, the higher savings realization of ESPCs corroborates the authors’ 2014 findings using a different comparison method. With continued soft government funding and regulatory impediments for climate change mitigation in the U.S., financed, paid-from-savings project models (e.g., ESPC, PACE, EaaS and others) certainly merit more attention. This study’s results are particularly compelling (and encouraging) given the country’s likely reliance on these vehicles to address existing building retrofits.
