Crystallization of Bottlebrush Statistical Copolymers of Polystyrene and Poly(ethylene oxide)

Here, bottlebrush statistical copolymers (BSCPs) with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polystyrene (PS) side chains grafted to a polynorbornene (PNB) backbone were synthesized by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The impact of the glassy PS side chains on the crystallization of the PEO side chains as a function of the backbone length, grafting densities, and fraction of the PS and PEO side chains is described. The bottlebrush architecture, where the side chains are anchored to the backbone, inherently constrains the mobility of PEO. Compared with the bulk crystallization temperature of PEO, the higher glass transition temperature of PS places further constraints on PEO crystallization. The limited mobility of PEO leads to cold crystallization behavior during heating. Reduced grafting densities, in turn, reduce side-chain crowding, leading to less extended pendant structures. The degree of crystallinity of PEO was found to decrease at lower grafting densities to a point where crystallization was not observed. The average distance between bottlebrush backbones increased linearly with the backbone length, suggesting that the backbone forms a distinct mesodomain. For BSCPs with asymmetric volume fractions of PS and PEO side chains, the degree of crystallinity of PEO increases with a change from cold crystallization to normal nucleation and growth during cooling, as a result of reduced constraints on PEO mobility by the glassy PS side chains.

Toward Optimization of Polymer Electrolytes by Electrochemical Characterization: Poly(pentyl malonate) versus Poly(ethylene oxide)

Ion transport in two polymer electrolytes, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(pentyl malonate) (PPM), mixed with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) is studied in the vicinity of the limiting current. The experimental measurements are in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on the concentrated solution theory. The properties of two electrolytes are compared using a new plot wherein the length-normalized limiting current, i lim L, is plotted as a function of the length-normalized potential drop, Φlim/L, in symmetric cells with electrolyte thickness, L. We propose that electrolyte design should aim to obtain the largest values of i lim L and the smallest values of Φlim/L. Using this criterion, PPM/LiTFSI is a better polymer electrolyte than PEO/LiTFSI. We hope that PPM/LiTFSI will serve as a benchmark for developing next-generation polymer electrolytes.

Operando TEM study of a working copper catalyst during ethylene oxidation

Active catalysts are typically metastable, and their surface state depends on the gas-phase chemical potential and reaction kinetics. To gain relevant insights into structure-performance relationships, it is essential to investigate catalysts under their operational conditions. Here, we use operando TEM combining real-time observations with online mass spectrometry (MS) to study a Cu catalyst during ethylene oxidation. We identify three distinct regimes characterized by varying structures and states that show different selectivities with temperature, and elucidate the reaction pathways with the aid of theoretical calculations. Our findings reveal that quasi-static Cu 2 O at low temperatures is selective towards ethylene oxide (EO) and acetaldehyde (AcH) via an oxometallacycle (OMC) pathway. In the dynamic Cu 0 /Cu 2 O oscillation regime at medium temperatures, partially reduced and strained oxides decrease the activation energies associated with partial oxidation. At high temperatures, the catalyst is predominantly Cu 0 , partially covered by a monolayer Cu 2 O. While Cu 0 is extremely efficient in dehydrogenation and eventual combustion, the monolayer oxide favors direct EO formation. These results challenge conclusions drawn from ultra-high vacuum studies that suggested metallic copper would be a selective epoxidation catalyst and highlight the need for operando study under realistic conditions.

Role of solvation site segmental dynamics on ion transport in ethylene-oxide based side-chain polymer electrolytes

Ion conducting capability is often imparted to polymeric materials through short polyether side-chains, and yet the impact of this graft polymer architecture on ion solvation and conduction has not been fully explored. Here, we use a combination of impedance spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, and atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) to compare the conductivity, ionic interactions, and polymer dynamics in a series of graft polyether electrolytes. We find that in poly[(oligo ethylene oxide)methyl ether methacrylate] (POEM), a widely used graft polymer electrolyte, the ionic conductivity drops more than an order of magnitude as the side-chain length is decreased from nine ethylene oxide (EO) units to three. This difference in conductivity is unexplained by differences in the calorimetric glass transition temperature (T g ), which varies only slightly with side-chain length. Furthermore, through vibrational spectroscopy and MD simulations we demonstrate that both linear and graft polyethers solvate Li⁺ ions effectively and dissociate them from large counterions, irrespective of side-chain length. Li⁺ ions do, however, show preferential solvation by EO units far from the methacrylate backbone. Similarly, EO units far from the backbone show enhanced segmental dynamics, while those near the immobile methacrylate group move substantially more slowly, as quantified by bond vector autocorrelation relaxation times. This heterogeneity in both ion solvation and local segmental relaxation explains variation in ion conductivity where material-averaged properties such as T g and number of free ions fail to do so. Importantly, the ionic conductivity is dictated primarily by the segmental mobility of the EO units which form effective solvation sites, rather than system-wide dynamics.

Electrochemical properties of poly(ethylene oxide) electrolytes above the entanglement threshold

The ion transport in electrolytes depends on three transport coefficients, conductivity (κ), salt diffusion coefficient (D), and the cation transference number with respect to the solvent velocity ($t_+^0$), and the thermodynamic factor ($T_f$). Current methods for determining these parameters involve four separate experiments, and the coupled nature of the equations used to determine them generally results in large experimental uncertainty. We present data obtained from 64 independent polymer electrolytes comprising poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt. The molecular weights of PEO ranged from 5 to 275 kg mol -1 ; these samples are all above the entanglement threshold. We minimize the experimental uncertainty in transport and thermodynamic measurements by exploiting the fact that ion transport in entangled polymer electrolytes should be independent of molecular weight. The dependence of $κ, D, t_+^0$, and $T_f$ as a function of salt concentration in the range 0.035 ≤ r ≤ 0.30 are presented with a 95% confidence interval, where r is the molar ratio of lithium ions to ethylene oxide monomer units. While κ, D, and $T_f$ are all positive as required by thermodynamic constraints, there is no constraint on the sign of $t_+^0$. We find that $t_+^0$ is negative in the salt concentration range of 0.093 ≤ r ≤ 0.189.

An experimental and analytical study of acetylene and ethylene oxidation behind shock waves

An experimental and analytical study of the oxidation of acetylene and ethylene behind incident shock waves was carried out over the temperature range 1815-2365 K at reaction pressures between 1.1 and 1.7 atm. The oxidation process was monitored by measuring radiation from carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and the reaction O + CO yields CO2 + h nu. The recorded emission profiles were analyzed to obtain concentrations for carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and the product of oxygen atom and the carbon monoxide concentrations. On the basis of this data and induction time data reported in the literature, kinetic models for acetylene and ethylene oxidation were assembled.

Ethylene oxide functionalization enhances the ionic conductivity of a MOF

Varying the degree of ethylene oxide (EO) functionalization of the zirconium MOF UiO-68 affords two novel MOFs; UiO-68-EO and UiO-68-2EO exhibit solvent-free ionic conductivity upon loading LiTFSI in their pores. Furthermore, incorporating EO chains provides a pathway for lithium ion migration between the coordinated sites and results in an ionic conductivity of 3.8 × 10 –7 S cm –1 and 3.9 × 10 –4 S cm –1 at 90 °C for UiO-68-EO/LiTFSI and UiO-68-2EO/LiTFSI respectively.

Plasma-Assisted Chemical-Looping Combustion: Low-Temperature Methane and Ethylene Oxidation with Nickel Oxide

The chemical reaction network of low-temperature plasma-assisted oxidation of methane (CH 4 ) and ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) with nickel oxide (NiO) was investigated in a heated plasma reactor through time-dependent species measurements by electron-ionization molecular beam mass spectrometry (EI-MBMS). Methane (ethylene) oxidation by NiO was explored in temperature ranges from 300-700 °C (300-500 °C) and 300-800 °C (300-600°C) for the plasma and non-plasma conditions, respectively. Significant enhancement of methane oxidation was observed with plasma between 400 and 500 °C, where no oxidation was observed under non-plasma conditions. For the oxidation of methane at higher temperatures three different oxidation stages were observed: I) a period of complete oxidation, II) a period of incomplete CO oxidation, and III) a period of carbon buildup. For the C 2 H 4 experiments, and unlike the CH 4 experiments, the plasma resulted in a significant amount of new intermediate oxygenated species, such as CH 2 O, CH 3 OH, C 2 H 4 O, and C 2 H 6 O. Carbon deposits were observed under both methane and ethylene conditions and verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). ReaxFF simulations were performed for the oxidation of CH 4 and C 2 H 4 in a non-plasma environment. The simulated intermediates and products largely agree with the species measured in the experiments, though the predicted intermediate oxygenated species such as CH 2 O and C 2 H 6 O were not observed in experiments under non-plasma conditions. A reaction pathway analysis for CH 4 and C 2 H 4 reacting with NiO was created based on the observed species from the MBMS spectra, along with ReaxFF simulations.

Anomalously high elastic modulus of a poly(ethylene oxide)-based composite electrolyte

The practical use of lithium metal anodes in solid-state batteries requires a polymer membrane with high lithium-ion conductivity, thermal/electrochemical stability, and mechanical strength. The primary challenge is to effectively decouple the ionic conductivity and mechanical strength of the polymer electrolytes. We report a remarkably facile single step synthetic strategy based on in-situ crosslinking of poly(ethylene oxide) (xPEO) in the presence of a woven glass fiber (GF). Such a simple method yields composite polymer electrolytes (CPE) of anomalously high elastic modulus up to 2.5 GPa over a broad temperature range (20 °C – 245 °C) that has never been previously documented. An unsupervised machine learning algorithm, K-mean clustering analysis, was implemented on the hyperspectral Raman mapping at the xPEO/GF interface. Using such a unique means, we show for the first time that the promoted mechanical strength originates from xPEO and GF interactions through dynamic hydrogen and ionic bonding. High ionic conductivity is achieved by the addition plasticizer (e.g. tetraglyme), where trifluoromethanesulfonate anions are tethered to the xPEO matrix and Li + cations are favorably transported through coordination with the plasticizer. Further, stringent galvanostatic cycling tests indicates the CPE can be stably cycled for >3000 h in a Li-metal symmetric cell at a moderate temperature (nearly 1500 Coulombs/cm 2 Li equivalents), outperforming most of the PEO-based electrolytes. The GF reinforced CPE reported here has multifunctional uses, such as solid electrolytes for all solid-state batteries and membranes for redox-flow batteries. Although the focus of this study is on lithium-based batteries, the results are equally promising for other alkali metal based batteries such as sodium and potassium.

Gas transport characteristics of supramolecular networks of metal-coordinated highly branched Poly(ethylene oxide)

Model systems are developed and investigated to better understand the effect of polyether-metal ion interactions on gas separation characteristics. These systems help answer current questions raised by the substantial body of research on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) dispersed in polyethers to improve gas separation performance, where favorable interactions between the metal centers and polyethers are preferred to improve interfacial compatibility. Specifically, we investigate CO 2 /gas transport properties of supramolecular networks comprising cross-linked poly(ethylene oxide) (XLPEO) and dissociable salts, including LiClO 4 , Ni(BF 4 ) 2 , and Cu(BF 4 ) 2 . Increasing the salt content increases the glass transition temperature (T g ) and generally decreases gas diffusivity and permeability, which can be successfully described using a T g -integrated free volume model with an expression similar to the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) equation. Surprisingly, low loadings of LiClO 4 and Cu(BF 4 ) 2 (2 mass% or less) can increase gas permeability by 30%–70% without affecting the CO 2 /gas selectivity. This increase correlates with polyether-metal ion dynamics as measured by dielectric spectroscopy. Understanding how interaction-mediated dynamics affect gas transport will be instrumental to designing MOF-based mixed matrix materials for gas separations.
