Exotic Higgs Decays

Exotic decays of the Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs boson into beyond-the-SM particles are predicted in a wide range of well-motivated theories. The enormous samples of Higgs bosons that have been and will be produced at the Large Hadron Collider thus constitute one of the key discovery opportunities at that facility, particularly in the upcoming high-statistics, high-luminosity run. Here we review recent theoretical work on models that predict or accommodate exotic Higgs decays, survey the status of current experimental searches, and look forward to future capabilities at dedicated Higgs factories and beyond.

Fractons and Exotic Symmetries from Branes

The emerging study of fractons, a new type of quasi-particle with restricted mobility, has motivated the construction of several classes of interesting continuum quantum field theories with novel properties. One such class consists of foliated field theories which, roughly, are built by coupling together fields supported on the leaves of foliations of spacetime. Another approach, which we refer to as exotic field theory, focuses on constructing Lagrangians consistent with special symmetries (like subsystem symmetries) that are adjacent to fracton physics. A third framework is that of infinite-component Chern-Simons theories, which attempts to generalize the role of conventional Chern-Simons theory in describing (2+1)D Abelian topological order to fractonic order in (3+1)D. The study of these theories is ongoing, and many of their properties remain to be understood. Historically, it has been fruitful to study QFTs by embedding them into string theory. One way this can be done is via D-branes, extended objects whose dynamics can, at low energies, be described in terms of conventional quantum field theory. Further, QFTs that can be realized in this way can then be analyzed using the rich mathematical and physical structure of string theory. In this paper, we show that foliated field theories, exotic field theories, and infinite-component Chern-Simons theories can all be realized on the world-volumes of branes. We hope that these constructions will ultimately yield valuable insights into the physics of these interesting field theories.

Probing exotic triple Higgs couplings at the LHC

In extended Higgs sectors that exhibit alignment without decoupling, the additional scalars are allowed to have large couplings to the Standard Model Higgs. We show that current nonresonant di-Higgs searches can be straightforwardly adapted to look for additional Higgses in these scenarios, where pair production of non-SM Higgses can be enhanced. For concreteness, we study pair production of exotic Higgses in the context of an almost inert two Higgs doublet model, where alignment is explained through an approximate $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry under which the additional scalars are odd. In this context, the smallness of the $\mathbb Z_2$ violating parameter suppresses single production of exotic Higgses, but it does not prevent a sizeable trilinear coupling $hHH$ between the SM Higgs ($h$) and the additional states ($H$). We study the process $pp\rightarrow h^* \rightarrow HH$ in the final states of $b\bar b b \bar b$, $b\bar b\gamma\gamma$, and multi-leptons. We find that at the HL-LHC these modes could be sensitive to masses of the additional neutral scalars in the range $130\mbox{ GeV} \lesssim m_H \lesssim 290\mbox{ GeV}$.

Limits on an exotic Higgs decay from a recast ATLAS four-lepton analysis

The ATLAS collaboration, using 139 fb −1 of 13 TeV collisions from the Large Hadron Collider, has placed limits on the decay of a Z boson to three dark photons. We reproduce the results of the ATLAS analysis, and then recast it as a limit on a exotic Higgs decay mode, in which the Higgs boson decays via a pair of intermediate (pseudo)scalars a to four dark photons V (or some other spin-one meson). Across the mass range for m a and m V , we find limits on the exotic Higgs branching fraction BR(H → aa → V V V V ) in the range of 4 × 10 −5 to 1 × 10 −4 .

Probing exotic charged Higgs decays in the Type-II 2HDM through top rich signal at a future 100 TeV pp collider

The exotic decay modes of non-Standard Model Higgs bosons are efficient in probing the hierarchical Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDM). In particular, the decay mode H ± → HW ± serves as a powerful channel in searching for charged Higgses. In this paper, we analyze the reach for H ± → HW ± → $t\bar{t}W$ at a 100 TeV pp collider, and show that it extends the reach of the previously studied ττW final states once above the top threshold. Top tagging technique is used, in combination with a boosted decision tree classifier. At the low tan β region, almost the entire hierarchical Type-II 2HDM parameter space can be probed via the combination of all exotic decay channels.

Brill-Noether-general limit root bundles: absence of vector-like exotics in F-theory Standard Models

Root bundles appear prominently in studies of vector-like spectra of 4d F-theory compactifications. Of particular importance to phenomenology are the Quadrillion F-theory Standard Models (F-theory QSMs). In this work, we analyze a superset of the physical root bundles whose cohomologies encode the vector-like spectra for the matter representations ($3$, $2$) 1/6 , ($\overline{3}$, $1$) -2/3 and ($1$, $1$) 1 . For the family B 3 (Δ$^{°}_{4}$) consisting of $\mathcal{O}$(10 11 ) F-theory QSM geometries, we argue that more than 99.995% of the roots in this superset have no vector-like exotics. This indicates that absence of vector-like exotics in those representations is a very likely scenario in the O(10 11 ) QSM geometries B 3 (Δ$^{°}_{4}$). The QSM geometries come in families of toric 3-folds B 3 (Δ°) obtained from triangulations of certain 3-dimensional polytopes Δ°. The matter curves in X Σ $\large{ϵ}$ B 3 (Δ°) can be deformed to nodal curves which are the same for all spaces in B 3 (Δ°). Therefore, one can probe the vector-like spectra on the entire family B 3 (Δ°) from studies of a few nodal curves. We compute the cohomologies of all limit roots on these nodal curves. In our applications, for the majority of limit roots the cohomologies are determined by line bundle cohomology on rational tree-like curves. For this, we present a computer algorithm. The remaining limit roots, corresponding to circuit-like graphs, are handled by hand. The cohomologies are independent of the relative position of the nodes, except for a few circuits. On these jumping circuits, line bundle cohomologies can jump if nodes are specially aligned. This mirrors classical Brill-Noether jumps. B 3 (Δ°) admits a jumping circuit, but the root bundle constraints pick the canonical bundle and no jump happens.

Diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary and exotic embeddings

Abstract We define family versions of the invariant of 4-manifolds with contact boundary due to Kronheimer and Mrowka and use these to detect exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary. Further, we show the existence of the first example of exotic 3-spheres in a smooth closed 4-manifold with diffeomorphic complements.

High-energy $η^{(')}π$ photoproduction and the nature of exotic waves

The observation of hybrid mesons in photoproduction experiments can provide essential insight into the inner workings of quantum chromodynamics in the strong coupling regime. In particular, the study of final $η^{(')}π$ states is of great interest due to the presence of the lowest lying hybrid candidate with manifestly exotic quantum numbers, the $π_1$(1600). In this work, a double-vector exchange model with Reggeized $ρ$ and $ω$ trajectories is developed to describe the photoproduction of $η^{(')}π$ in the high-mass region. Results are presented for the differential cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries in the energy region of interest to the GlueX experiment. The model contains no free parameters, and reproduces the magnitude and t-dependence of existing CLAS data at $E_γ$ = 5 GeV. The model predicts a stronger asymmetry in the $η'π$ channel than in the $ηπ$ channel, consistent with what has previously been observed in pion beam experiments. This suggests that the sizeable production of exotic odd waves in $η'π$ is not necessarily related to the presence of gluon-rich environments. Confirmation of these predicted asymmetries from forthcoming GlueX data would enable further predictions of the low-energy spectrum.

Probing New Hadronic Forces with Heavy Exotic Atoms

We explore the potential of precision spectroscopy of heavy exotic atoms where electrons are substituted by negative hadrons to detect new force carriers with hadronic couplings. The selected transitions are unaffected by nuclear contact terms, thus enabling highly accurate calculations using bound-state QED, provided that the nuclear polarization is under control. Alternatively, we demonstrate that the dipole polarizability, a fundamental property of nuclei, can be extracted from the spectroscopy of exotic atoms in a novel way by combining two transitions while maintaining high sensitivity to new physics. Based on existing data, we extracted world-leading bounds on mediator masses ranging from 0.1 to 10 MeV for two benchmark models and show that forthcoming experiments could enhance the sensitivity to new physics by 2 orders of magnitude.

Prediction of exotic magnetic states in the alkali-metal quasi-one-dimensional iron selenide compound Na 2 FeSe 2

The magnetic and electronic phase diagram of a model for the quasi-one-dimensional alkali-metal iron selenide compound Na 2 FeSe 2 is presented. The novelty of this material is that the valence of iron is Fe 2+ , contrary to most other iron-chain compounds with valence Fe 3+ . Using first-principles techniques, we developed a three-orbital tight-binding model that reproduces the ab initio band structure near the Fermi level. Including Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos methods, we constructed the ground-state phase diagram. A robust region where the block state ↑↑↓↓↑↑↓↓ is stabilized was unveiled. The analog state in iron ladders, employing 2×2 ferromagnetic blocks, is by now well established, but in chains a block magnetic order has not been observed yet in real materials. The phase diagram also contains a large region of canonical staggered spin order ↑↓↑↓↑↓↑ at very large Hubbard repulsion. At the block-to-staggered transition region, an exotic phase is stabilized with a mixture of both states: an inhomogeneous orbital-selective charge density wave with the exotic spin configuration ↑↑↓↑↓↓↑↓. Our predictions for Na 2 FeSe 2 may guide crystal growers and neutron-scattering experimentalists towards the realization of block states in one-dimensional iron selenide chain materials.

Direct observation of the exotic β – γ – α decay mode in the T z = – 1 nucleus Na 20

The exotic β – γ – α decay mode of 20 Na has been directly observed for the first time in the Day-one experiment at the Beijing Radioactive Ion-beam Facility. The 20 Na source was produced by using a 100-MeV proton beam bombarding a stack of microporous MgO thick target and delivered as an intense mass separated beam after online ionization. A high-efficiency simultaneous measurement of β, γ, and α transitions enables the β-delayed γ – γ and α – γ coincidence spectroscopy. Here three β – γ – α exotic decay sequences in 20 Na are discovered, which expands the rare decay modes observed in β decay. Moreover, a β – α –decay sequence to the 6130-keV 3 – state of 16 O is observed, which is likely through the 12367-keV 1 + state in 20 Ne. The experimentally deduced B(F) and B(GT) are compared to the shell-model calculation, the allowed β transition strengths can be well accounted for by using sd shell-model space interactions.

Code package for calculating modified cosmic ionization and thermal histories with dark matter and other exotic energy injections

Here we present a new public Python package, DarkHistory, for computing the effects of dark matter annihilation and decay on the temperature and ionization history of the early universe. DarkHistory simultaneously solves for the evolution of the free electron fraction and gas temperature, and for the cooling of annihilation/decay products and the secondary particles produced in the process. Consequently, we can self-consistently include the effects of both astrophysical and exotic sources of heating and ionization, and automatically take into account backreaction, where modifications to the ionization/temperature history in turn modify the energy-loss processes for injected particles. We introduce a number of worked examples, demonstrating how to use the code in a range of different configurations, in particular for arbitrary dark matter masses and annihilation/decay final states. Possible applications of DarkHistory include mapping out the effects of dark matter annihilation/decay on the global 21 cm signal and the epoch of reionization, as well as the effects of exotic energy injections other than dark matter annihilation/decay. The code is available at https://github.com/hongwanliu/DarkHistory with documentation at https://darkhistory.readthedocs.io. Data files required to run the code can be downloaded at https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/DUOUWA.

Reevaluation of the cosmic antideuteron flux from cosmic-ray interactions and from exotic sources

Cosmic-ray antideuterons could be a key for the discovery of exotic phenomena in our Galaxy, such as dark-matter annihilations or primordial black hole evaporation. Unfortunately the theoretical predictions of the antideuteron flux at Earth are plagued with uncertainties from the mechanism of antideuteron production and propagation in the Galaxy. We present the most up-to-date calculation of the antideuteron fluxes from cosmic-ray collisions with the interstellar medium and from exotic processes. We include for the first time the antideuteron inelastic interaction cross section recently measured by the ALICE collaboration to account for the loss of antideuterons during propagation. In order to bracket the uncertainty in the expected fluxes, we consider several state-of-the-art models of antideuteron production and of cosmic-ray propagation.

Search for displaced photons produced in exotic decays of the Higgs boson using 13 TeV p p collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for delayed and nonpointing photons originating from the displaced decay of a neutral long-lived particle (LLP). The analysis uses the full run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The capabilities of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter are exploited to precisely measure the arrival times and trajectories of photons. The results are interpreted in a scenario where the LLPs are pair produced in exotic decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson, and each LLP subsequently decays into a photon and a particle that escapes direct detection, giving rise to missing transverse momentum. No significant excess is observed above the expectation due to Standard Model background processes. The results are used to set upper limits on the branching ratio of the exotic decay of the Higgs boson. A model-independent limit is also set on the production of photons with large values of displacement and time delay.

Simulating exotic phases of matter with bond-directed interactions with arrays of Majorana-Cooper pair boxes

It is suggested that networks of Majorana-Cooper pair boxes connected by metallic nanowirescan simulate various exotic states of matter. In this simulations Majorana-Cooper boxes play therole of effective spins S=1/2 and the metallic connections generate the Kondo screening and theRuderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Depending on what prevails - whether it isthe Kondo effect or the RKKY exchange, one will have either an effective spin model or a Kondolattice. The list of exotic stets includes the famous hexagonal Kitaev model, a generalization of thismodel for a Kondo lattice and various spin models with three-spin interactions. A special emphasizeis made on the discussion of the Kondo lattice scenario.

Exotic silicon phases synthesized through ultrashort laser-induced microexplosion: Characterization with Raman microspectroscopy

Exotic metastable phases of silicon formed under high pressure are expected to have attractive semiconducting properties including narrow band gaps that open up novel technological applications. Confined microexplosions induced by powerful ultrashort laser pulses have been demonstrated as an advanced tool for the creation of new high-pressure phases that cannot be synthesized by other means. Tightly focused laser pulses are used to generate localized modifications inside the material structure, providing the possibility for precise controlled band-gap engineering. In this study, noninvasive Raman spectroscopy was used for analysis of laser-modified zones in silicon and to determine the metastable high-pressure phases contained. Low laser energies induced the formation of amorphous-only silicon, while higher energies led to crystalline silicon polymorphs within the modifications, albeit under considerable residual stress up to 4.5 GPa. The presence of the structurally similar r8-Si, bc8-Si, and bt8-Si phases is revealed, as well as other yet to be identified phases, and the stacking-related 9R Si polytype is evidenced, presumably stress-induced by the highly compressed laser-modified zone. The ab initio random structure searching approach is used to calculate the Raman signatures and to help identify different Si polymorphs. The findings of this study by Raman spectroscopy from ultrashort laser-induced microexplosion sites may yield insights into the local structure and properties of new silicon metastable phases and the prospect of utilizing exotic phases for extending current applications.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into long-lived particles in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using displaced vertices in the ATLAS inner detector

A novel search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into pairs of long-lived neutral particles, each decaying into a bottom quark pair, is performed using 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events consistent with the production of a Higgs boson in association with a leptonically decaying Z boson are analysed. Long-lived particle (LLP) decays are reconstructed from inner-detector tracks as displaced vertices with high mass and track multiplicity relative to Standard Model processes. The analysis selection requires the presence of at least two displaced vertices, effectively suppressing Standard Model backgrounds. The residual background contribution is estimated using a data-driven technique. No excess over Standard Model predictions is observed, and upper limits are set on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to LLPs. Branching ratios above 10% are excluded at 95% confidence level for LLP mean proper lifetimes cτ as small as 4 mm and as large as 100 mm. For LLP masses below 40 GeV, these results represent the most stringent constraint in this lifetime regime.
