Process optimization of complex geometries using feed forward control for laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the fabrication of complex designs that are difficult to create by other means. Metal parts manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can incorporate intricate design features and demonstrate desirable mechanical properties. However, printing a part that is qualified for its intended application often involves reprinting and discarding many parts to eliminate defects, improve dimensional accuracy, and increase repeatability. The process of iteratively converging on the appropriate build parameters increases the time and cost of creating functional LPBF manufactured parts. This work describes a fast, scalable method for part-scale process optimization of arbitrary geometries. Additionally, the computational approach uses feature extraction to identify scan vectors in need of parameter adaptation and applies results from simulation-based feed forward control models. This method provides a framework to quickly optimize complex parts through the targeted application of models with a range of fidelity and by automating the transfer of optimization strategies to new part designs. The computational approach and algorithmic framework are described, a software package is implemented, the method is applied to parts with complex features, and parts are printed on a customized open architecture LPBF machine.

Artificial intelligence time series forecasting for feed-forward laser stabilization

Laser plasma accelerators, typically operating at 1–10 Hz repetition rates, have the ability to produce high-quality electron beams in compact, all-optical-driven configurations, with the electron beams uniquely suited for a wide variety of accelerator-based applications. However, fluctuations and drifts in the laser delivery to the meter-scaled and below plasma target (the electron beam source) will translate into electron beam source variations that can limit their utility for demanding applications like light sources or linear colliders. Commercially available active feedback laser stabilization systems are intrinsically bandwidth limited due to their integration with multi-inch corrective mirror mounts which minimizes their effectiveness. In this manuscript, we present a Neural Network time series forecaster that can predict laser position fluctuations of the laser delivery to the final target well ahead of a future laser shot. The Root-Mean-Square-Error (RMSE) of the prediction accuracy was < 2 μ m for a 1 / e 2 beam radius of 34 μ m . Our feed-forward approach serves as a first-step in circumventing the bandwidth limitations imposed by the currently available stabilization systems since it allows for mirrors to be moved into position ahead of time to offset the predicted future position drift. This will help advance laser plasma accelerator research by providing greater robustness and stability needed for its applications.

Synthetic feed-forward loop circuit boosts transgene expression in sugarcane

Bio-based products derived from natural plant-derived materials offer a promising alternative to petroleum-based products, which are essential for achieving global sustainability (Gupta et al. 2022). Sugarcane provides 40% of the world’s biofuel (Brant et al. 2025). Recently, metabolic engineering of sugarcane for hyperaccumulation of biomass oil is emerging as a strategy to elevate the crop’s energy content (Cao et al. 2023; Maitra et al. 2024). Synthetic transcription factors offer a powerful tool for modulating entire metabolic pathways by enabling fine-tuned activation or repression of specific genes (Liu and Stewart 2016; Hooghvorst and Altpeter 2023). However, the application of these technologies faces challenges, including the availability of well-characterized genetic building blocks for precise manipulation of gene expression, and the inherently challenging properties of gene expression in highly polyploid crops like sugarcane (Liu and Stewart 2016).

LEBT Buncher / Feed Forward / Frequency Generation: System Design Document (SDD)

The LAMP Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) transfers a continuous beam at 100 keV from the ion source to RFQ in LEBT. A LEBT buncher imposes an energy tilt to initiate velocy bunching in the chopped beam pulse about 25 ns long to form a short MPEG bunch. One possible option for the LEBT buncher based on a two-gap LC-circuit driven structure was considered, which is similar to the existing LANSCE low-frequncy buncher (LFB). Another possible option is a non-resonant element driven by a pulse-forming-network that provides a single pulse at the repetition frequency of MPEG beam, with a period of 1.8 µs. The LEBT operation is synchronized with the accelerator timing system.

Neural network based feed-forward high density associative memory

A novel thin film approach to neural-network-based high-density associative memory is described. The information is stored locally in a memory matrix of passive, nonvolatile, binary connection elements with a potential to achieve a storage density of 10 to the 9th bits/sq cm. Microswitches based on memory switching in thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon, and alternatively in manganese oxide, have been used as programmable read-only memory elements. Low-energy switching has been ascertained in both these materials. Fabrication and testing of memory matrix is described. High-speed associative recall approaching 10 to the 7th bits/sec and high storage capacity in such a connection matrix memory system is also described.

Feed-forward volume rendering algorithm for moderately parallel MIMD machines

Algorithms for direct volume rendering on parallel and vector processors are investigated. Volumes are transformed efficiently on parallel processors by dividing the data into slices and beams of voxels. Equal sized sets of slices along one axis are distributed to processors. Parallelism is achieved at two levels. Because each slice can be transformed independently of others, processors transform their assigned slices with no communication, thus providing maximum possible parallelism at the first level. Within each slice, consecutive beams are incrementally transformed using coherency in the transformation computation. Also, coherency across slices can be exploited to further enhance performance. This coherency yields the second level of parallelism through the use of the vector processing or pipelining. Other ongoing efforts include investigations into image reconstruction techniques, load balancing strategies, and improving performance.

Classification and Prediction of RF Coupling inside A-320 and A-319 Airplanes using Feed Forward Neural Networks

Neural Network Modeling is introduced in this paper to classify and predict Interference Path Loss measurements on Airbus 319 and 320 airplanes. Interference patterns inside the aircraft are classified and predicted based on the locations of the doors, windows, aircraft structures and the communication/navigation system-of-concern. Modeled results are compared with measured data and a plan is proposed to enhance the modeling for better prediction of electromagnetic coupling problems inside aircraft.

A Capability to Generate Physics-based Mass Estimating Relationships for Conceptual Space Vehicle Design

This paper is written in support of the on-going research into conceptual space vehicle design conducted at the Space Systems Design Laboratory (SSDL) at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Research at the SSDL follows a sequence of a number of the traditional aerospace disciplines. The sequence of disciplines and interrelationship among them is shown in the Design Structure Matrix (DSM). The discipline of Weights and Sizing occupies a central location in the design of a new space vehicle. Weights and Sizing interact, either in a feed forward or feed back manner, with every other discipline in the DSM. Because of this principle location, accuracy in Weights and Sizing is integral to producing an accurate model of a space vehicle concept. Instead of using conceptual level techniques, a simplified Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technique is described as applied to the problem of the Liquid Oxygen (LOX) tank bending loads applied to the forward Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) tank of the Georgia Tech Air Breathing Launch Vehicle (ABLV).

Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) Flight Dynamics Simulations Using MATLAB (R)

This paper describes a study to verify onboard attitude control laws in the coarse Sun-pointing (CSP) mode by simulation and to develop procedures for operational support for the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission. SOHO was launched on December 2, 1995, and the predictions of the simulation were verified with the flight data. This study used a commercial off the shelf product MATLAB(tm) to do the following: Develop procedures for computing the parasitic torques for orbital maneuvers; Simulate onboard attitude control of roll, pitch, and yaw during orbital maneuvers; Develop procedures for predicting firing time for both on- and off-modulated thrusters during orbital maneuvers; Investigate the use of feed forward or pre-bias torques to reduce the attitude handoff during orbit maneuvers - in particular, determine how to use the flight data to improve the feed forward torque estimates for use on future maneuvers. The study verified the stability of the attitude control during orbital maneuvers and the proposed use of feed forward torques to compensate for the attitude handoff. Comparison of the simulations with flight data showed: Parasitic torques provided a good estimate of the on- and off-modulation for attitude control; The feed forward torque compensation scheme worked well to reduce attitude handoff during the orbital maneuvers. The work has been extended to prototype calibration of thrusters from observed firing time and observed reaction wheel speed changes.

A robust model predictive control algorithm for uncertain nonlinear systems that guarantees resolvability

A robustly stabilizing MPC (model predictive control) algorithm for uncertain nonlinear systems is developed that guarantees resolvability. With resolvability, initial feasibility of the finite-horizon optimal control problem implies future feasibility in a receding-horizon framework. The control consists of two components; (i) feed-forward, and (ii) feedback part. Feed-forward control is obtained by online solution of a finite-horizon optimal control problem for the nominal system dynamics. The feedback control policy is designed off-line based on a bound on the uncertainty in the system model. The entire controller is shown to be robustly stabilizing with a region of attraction composed of initial states for which the finite-horizon optimal control problem is feasible. The controller design for this algorithm is demonstrated on a class of systems with uncertain nonlinear terms that have norm-bounded derivatives and derivatives in polytopes. An illustrative numerical example is also provided.

An intercomparison of artificial intelligence approaches for polar scene identification

The following six different artificial-intelligence (AI) approaches to polar scene identification are examined: (1) a feed forward back propagation neural network, (2) a probabilistic neural network, (3) a hybrid neural network, (4) a 'don't care' feed forward perception model, (5) a 'don't care' feed forward back propagation neural network, and (6) a fuzzy logic based expert system. The ten classes into which six AVHRR local-coverage arctic scenes were classified were: water, solid sea ice, broken sea ice, snow-covered mountains, land, stratus over ice, stratus over water, cirrus over water, cumulus over water, and multilayer cloudiness. It was found that 'don't care' back propagation neural network produced the highest accuracies. This approach has also low CPU requirement.

Deep Kronecker neural networks: A general framework for neural networks with adaptive activation functions

Here we propose a new type of neural networks, Kronecker neural networks (KNNs), that form a general framework for neural networks with adaptive activation functions. KNNs employ the Kronecker product, which provides an efficient way of constructing a very wide network while keeping the number of parameters low. Our theoretical analysis reveals that under suitable conditions, KNNs induce a faster decay of the loss than that by the feed-forward networks. This is also empirically verified through a set of computational examples. Furthermore, under certain technical assumptions, we establish global convergence of gradient descent for KNNs. As a specific case, we propose the Rowdy activation function that is designed to get rid of any saturation region by injecting sinusoidal fluctuations, which include trainable parameters. The proposed Rowdy activation function can be employed in any neural network architecture like feed-forward neural networks, Recurrent neural networks, Convolutional neural networks etc. The effectiveness of KNNs with Rowdy activation is demonstrated through various computational experiments including function approximation using feed-forward neural networks, solution inference of partial differential equations using the physics-informed neural networks, and standard deep learning benchmark problems using convolutional and fully-connected neural networks.

Dim star fringe tracking demonstration on SIM's system testbed-3

The main testbed objective is to demonstrate nanometer class stability of fringes in the dim star, or science, interferometer while using path length & angle feed-forward control, and while the instrument is integrated atop a flight-like flexible structure. This document addresses completion of the Path Length Feed Forward milestone, which requires at least 40 dB of external delay rejection at some frequency between 0.1 and 1.0 Hz.
