Rational design of a uranyl metal-organic framework for the capture and colorimetric detection of organic dyes

A new uranyl containing metal-organic framework, RPL-1: [(UO2)2(C28H18O8)] · H2O (RPL for Radiochemical Processing Laboratory), was prepared, structurally characterized, and the solid-state photoluminescence properties explored. The single crystal X-ray diffraction data reveal the structure of RPL-1 consists of two crystallographically unique three dimensional, interpenetrating nets with a 4,3-connected tbo topology. Each net contains large pores with an average width of 22.8 Å and is formed from monomeric, hexagonal bipyramidal uranyl nodes that are linked via 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (TCPB) linkers. The thermal and photophysical properties of RPL-1 were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and absorbance, fluorescence, and lifetime spectroscopies. The material displays excellent thermal stability and temperature dependent uranyl and TCBP luminescence. The framework is stable in aqueous media and due to the large void space (constituting 76% of the unit cell by volume) can sequester organic dyes, the uptake of which induces a visible change to the color of the material.

Multivariate zeolitic imidazolate frameworks with an inverting trend in flexibility

Here, through systematic linker substitution in a flexible zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) with step-shaped adsorption–desorption, structural intermediates between the known open and closed phases were isolated. Reflecting this, modulative sorption behaviour with an inverting adsorption pressure trend—in which the step pressure decreases and then increases again with increasing mixed linker concentration—is observed, highlighting how linker substitution modifies the energetic landscape of framework flexibility

Hybrid Porous Crystalline Materials from Metal Organic Frameworks and Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract Two frontier crystalline porous framework materials, namely, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been widely explored owing to their outstanding physicochemical properties. While each type of framework has its own intrinsic advantages and shortcomings for specific applications, combining the complementary properties of the two materials allows the engineering of new classes of hybrid porous crystalline materials with properties superior to the individual components. Since the first report of MOF/COF hybrid in 2016, it has rapidly evolved as a novel platform for diverse applications. The state‐of‐art advances in the various synthetic approaches of MOF/COF hybrids are hereby summarized, together with their applications in different areas. Perspectives on the main challenges and future opportunities are also offered in order to inspire a multidisciplinary effort toward the further development of chemically diverse, multi‐functional hybrid porous crystalline materials.

Conductive Metallophthalocyanine Framework Films with High Carrier Mobility as Efficient Chemiresistors

Abstract The poor electrical conductivity of two‐dimensional (2D) crystalline frameworks greatly limits their utilization in optoelectronics and sensor technology. Herein, we describe a conductive metallophthalocyanine‐based NiPc‐CoTAA framework with cobalt(II) tetraaza[14]annulene linkages. The high conjugation across the whole network combined with densely stacked metallophthalocyanine units endows this material with high electrical conductivity, which can be greatly enhanced by doping with iodine. The NiPc‐CoTAA framework was also fabricated as thin films with different thicknesses from 100 to 1000 nm by the steam‐assisted conversion method. These films enabled the detection of low‐concentration gases and exhibited remarkable sensitivity and stability. This study indicates the enormous potential of metallophthalocyanine‐based conductive frameworks in advanced stand‐off chemical sensors and provides a general strategy through tailor‐make molecular design to develop sensitive and stable chemical sensors for the detection of low‐concentration gases.

A modeling framework for designing and evaluating curbside traffic management policies at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport

Emerging mobility technologies are changing the transportation system landscape. This is especially evident at airports, such as the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Without careful analysis, these changes could lead to inefficient and costly airport operations. This paper presents a modeling framework that integrates travel mode encoding, demand projection, and microsimulation to enable airports to develop, simulate, and evaluate curbside traffic managements policies and measure their impact. Here, the framework is utilized to analyze several traffic scenarios and policies for DFW: a baseline scenario which represents DFW traffic pattern as observed in 2018 and projected to 2045, a transit network company (TNC) electrification policy, a TNC queuing policy, a policy that increased transit ridership, a bus-only policy which considers the use of only buses inside DFW, an autonomous vehicle (AV) policy which investigates the impact of autonomous vehicle (AV) adoption on airport operations, and an example COVID-19 scenario which models the impact of the COVID19 pandemic. The simulations’ results demonstrate that: increasing the DFW transit ridership postpones the need for airport curbside expansion the most; encouraging shared-mobility with the bus-only policy produces the most savings in curbside congestion delays; automation and electrification for all passenger vehicle trips to/from DFW generates the most saving in fuel consumption and emissions; and uncontrolled AV adoption incurs the highest increase in fuel consumption, delay, and emissions and could require immediate airport capacity extension. Without policy intervention or investment in additional infrastructure capacity, these results predict the current operations would face significant congestion on high demand days starting as early as 2028. While derived in close partnership with DFW, the methodology presented here can be generalized to any airport.

UiO-66 Metal–Organic Framework as an Anode for a Potassium-Ion Battery: Quantum Mechanical Analysis

The natural abundance of potassium in the earth’s crust is 1000 times higher than that of lithium, so energy technologies built on potassium are more sustainable. Potassium-ion batteries have attracted considerable attention because of their relatively low cost and high operating potential, but questions remain about the best anode material for such batteries. Here, in this paper, we report first-principles computations based on density functional theory to investigate the performance of the UiO-66 metal–organic framework as an anode material for potassium-ion batteries; the goal is to provide a fundamental understanding of metal–organic framework (MOF)-based electrodes to guide the design and development of high-performance potassium-ion batteries. Our study includes the stability and electronic properties of potassiated structures and the mechanisms of potassium intercalation and diffusion in the framework. The results indicate that UiO-66 has a maximum specific capacity of 644 mAh/g as the anode of a potassium-ion battery. During potassiation, we observe charge transfer from potassium to carbon or oxygen of UiO-66 near the intercalated K. During K diffusion, the K migrates along the UiO-66 framework with a maximal migration energy barrier of 0.377 eV in the optimal pathway, which is much lower than the barriers for Li and Na diffusion in UiO-66. The diffusion coefficient of K in the anode is several orders of magnitude larger than those of Li and Na. This favors potassium ions over lithium ions or sodium ions when UiO-66 is the anode.

DeepLearnMOR: a deep-learning framework for fluorescence image-based classification of organelle morphology

Abstract The proper biogenesis, morphogenesis, and dynamics of subcellular organelles are essential to their metabolic functions. Conventional techniques for identifying, classifying, and quantifying abnormalities in organelle morphology are largely manual and time-consuming, and require specific expertise. Deep learning has the potential to revolutionize image-based screens by greatly improving their scope, speed, and efficiency. Here, we used transfer learning and a convolutional neural network (CNN) to analyze over 47,000 confocal microscopy images from Arabidopsis wild-type and mutant plants with abnormal division of one of three essential energy organelles: chloroplasts, mitochondria, or peroxisomes. We have built a deep-learning framework, DeepLearnMOR (Deep Learning of the Morphology of Organelles), which can rapidly classify image categories and identify abnormalities in organelle morphology with over 97% accuracy. Feature visualization analysis identified important features used by the CNN to predict morphological abnormalities, and visual clues helped to better understand the decision-making process, thereby validating the reliability and interpretability of the neural network. This framework establishes a foundation for future larger-scale research with broader scopes and greater data set diversity and heterogeneity.

Minimizing the Electromechanical Stresses in Poloidal Field Coils by Optimizing their Numbers and Locations using FREDA Framework

Poloidal field (PF) and central solenoid (CS) coils play a crucial role in sustaining the equilibrium and preserving the shape of highly confined tokamak plasmas. Ensuring that PF coil current and mechanical stress stay within superconducting and structural limitations is an important check in the design assessment. Minimizing the PF coil currents and mechanical stresses influences reliability, cost, and performance. A free-boundary MHD equilibrium code—FreeGS is employed within the fusion reactor design and assessment (FREDA) whole facility modeling (WFM) framework to construct the plasma equilibrium based on the configuration and currents in the PF coils. Here, we present the capability of the FreeGS code to minimize the currents, forces, and electromagnetic stresses on the PF coils by optimizing their number, sizes, structures, and locations while maintaining an MHD stable plasma configuration with a large confinement factor. The workflow is initialized with a configuration of plasma parameters and coils’ locations from the 0-D tokamak build systems code in the FREDA framework. Then, FreeGS is called to calculate the initial equilibrium at the minimum total current in PF coils. Thereafter, FreeGS’s internal optimizer minimizes the currents and hoop and central forces on the PF coils while maintaining the reference equilibrium. Finally, the input configuration is updated with the optimized parameters for equilibria over the ramp-up phase of a burning-plasma operation. FREDA’s whole facility optimization capability, which includes all magnetic field coil systems, blanket, vacuum vessel (VV), first wall, divertor, etc., is under development and out of the scope for this study.

Operation Optimization using Reinforcement Learning with Integrated Artificial Reasoning Framework

In large and complex systems, operational decision-making requires a systematic analysis with a vast amount of data from both process parameters and component status monitoring. In this paper, we present an integrated artificial reasoning approach for system state transition models that can help operational decision-making with explainable and traceable reasoning. The integrated artificial reasoning framework is a physics-based approach of defining the system structure in a Bayesian network, so we leveraged it in a Markov decision process (MDP) for finding optimal operational solutions. In our proposed framework, the MDP is implemented on a dynamic Bayesian network (DBN), which represents causalities in a system. The multilevel flow modeling was utilized in order to extract these causalities in a more efficient and objective manner. Since multilevel flow modeling is based on the fundamental energy and mass conservation laws, the target system is decomposed into several mass, energy, and information structures, which serve as the basis for a DBN. The MDP consists of the processes of finding a solution for the Bellman equation, which can be derived from the conditional probability equations of the constructed DBN. System operators can capture stochastic system dynamics as multiple subsystem state transitions based on their physical relations and uncertainties coming from the component degradation process or random failures. We analyzed a simplified example system to illustrate finding an optimal operational policy with this approach.

Tsdat: An Open-Source Data Standardization Framework for Marine Energy and Beyond

Many organizations are tasked with the collection and processing of large quantities of data from various measurement devices. Data reported from these sources are often not interoperable with datasets and software used by analysts and other organizations in the same domain, introducing barriers for collaboration on large-scale projects. This poses a particular problem for cross-device comparisons and machine learning applications, which rely on large quantities of data from multiple sources. To address these challenges, the open-source Time-Series Data Pipelines (Tsdat) Python framework was developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, with strategic guidance and direction provided by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories to facilitate collaboration and accelerate advancements in the marine energy domain through the development of an open-source ecosystem of tools. This paper will describe the Tsdat framework and the data standards within which it operates. A beta version of Tsdat has been released and is being used by several projects in marine energy, wind energy, and building energy systems.

Highly C2/C1-Selective Covalent Organic Frameworks Substituted with Azo Groups

A series of covalent organic frameworks substituted with azo groups (AzoCOFs) have been synthesized via imine condensation. The obtained frameworks show crystallinity and high stability. More importantly, the AzoCOFs exhibit exceptionally high ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST) selectivity in adsorption of C 2 H 2 (35–2891) over CH 4 at 273 K and 1 bar, owing to the favorable interactions between azo groups and acetylene molecules. The dependence of the gas adsorption property on pore size and polarity of the frameworks was also studied. Here, the triethylene glycol substituted Tg-AzoCOF shows the highest C 2 H 2 /CH 4 selectivity (IAST selectivity of 2891), which represents the highest reported for all porous materials. The AzoCOFs also exhibit high IAST adsorption selectivity of C 2 H 4 /CH 4 (11–20), C 2 H 6 /CH 4 (15–22), and CO 2 /CH 4 (12–37), which is comparable with most porous materials, thus showing their great potential in gas separation applications.

Magnetic ordering through itinerant ferromagnetism in a metal-organic framework

In this report, the materials that combine magnetic order with other desirable physical attributes could find transformative applications in spintronics, quantum sensing, low-density magnets and gas separations. Among potential multifunctional magnetic materials, metal-organic frameworks, in particular, bear structures that offer intrinsic porosity, vast chemical and structural programmability, and the tunability of electronic properties. Nevertheless, magnetic order within metal-organic frameworks has generally been limited to low temperatures, owing largely to challenges in creating a strong magnetic exchange. Here we employ the phenomenon of itinerant ferromagnetism to realize magnetic ordering at T C = 225 K in a mixed-valence chromium(II/III) triazolate compound, which represents the highest ferromagnetic ordering temperature yet observed in a metal-organic framework. The itinerant ferromagnetism proceeds through a double-exchange mechanism, which results in a barrierless charge transport below the Curie temperature and a large negative magnetoresistance of 23% at 5 K. These observations suggest applications for double-exchange-based coordination solids in the emergent fields of magnetoelectrics and spintronics.

Nanoconfinement of Molecular Magnesium Borohydride Captured in a Bipyridine-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework

The lower limit of metal hydride nanoconfinement is demonstrated through the coordination of a molecular hydride species to binding sites inside the pores of a metal-organic framework (MOF). Magnesium borohydride, which has a high hydrogen capacity, is incorporated into the pores of UiO-67bpy (Zr6O4(OH)4(bpydc)6 with bpydc2- = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'- dicarboxylate) by solvent impregnation. The MOF retained its long-range order, and transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping confirmed the retention of the crystal morphology and revealed a homogeneous distribution of the hydride within the MOF host. Notably, the B-, N-, and Mg-edge XAS data confirm the coordination of Mg(II) to the N atoms of the chelating bipyridine groups. In situ 11B MAS NMR studies helped elucidate the reaction mechanism and revealed that complete hydrogen release from Mg(BH4)2 occurs as low as 200 °C. Sieverts and thermogravimetric measurements indicate an increase in the rate of hydrogen release, with the onset of hydrogen desorption as low as 120 °C, which is approximately 150 °C lower than that of the bulk material. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations support the improved dehydrogenation properties and confirm the drastically lower activation energy for B-H bond dissociation.

A Probabilistic Model-Based Diagnostic Framework for Nuclear Engineering Systems

A fault diagnostic framework was investigated in this study for applications in thermal–hydraulic systems of nuclear power plants. The proposed framework consists of quantitative model-based diagnosis, statistical change detection and probabilistic reasoning. The use of physics-based diagnostic models provides high detection sensitivity and allows noise and measurement uncertainty to be incorporated robustly. Performance-related parametric models for each component are constructed based on first principles. Numerical model residuals are generated using the concept of analytical redundancy. Statistical change detection methods are employed to detect non-zero residuals in the presence of uncertainty. The diagnosis task is performed using Bayesian inference to detect and localize possible faults. Application to a single-phase heat exchanger for demonstration showed that the proposed probabilistic framework can provide improved results in comparison with traditional approaches while remaining less sensitive to false alarms in the presence of measurement and modeling uncertainty.

BASIN-3D: A brokering framework to integrate diverse environmental data

Diverse observational and simulation datasets are needed to understand and predict complex ecosystem behavior over seasonal to decadal and century time-scales. Integration of these datasets poses a major barrier towards advancing environmental science, particularly due to differences in the structure and formats of data provided by various sources. Here, we describe BASIN-3D (Broker for Assimilation, Synthesis and Integration of eNvironmental Diverse, Distributed Datasets), a data integration framework designed to dynamically retrieve and transform heterogeneous data from different sources into a common format to provide an integrated view. BASIN-3D enables users to adopt a standardized approach for data retrieval and avoid customizations for the data type or source. We demonstrate the value of BASIN-3D with two use cases that require integration of data from regional to watershed spatial scales. The first application uses the BASIN-3D Python library to integrate time-series hydrological and meteorological data to provide standardized inputs to analytical and machine learning codes in order to predict the impacts of hydrological disturbances on large river corridors of the United States. The second application uses the BASIN-3D Django framework to integrate diverse time-series data in a mountainous watershed in East River, Colorado, United States to enable scientific researchers to explore and download data through an interactive web portal. Thus, BASIN-3D can be used to support data integration for both web-based tools, as well as data analytics using Python scripting and extensions like Jupyter notebooks. The framework is expected to be transferable to and useful for many other field and modeling studies.
