Free-free and fixed base modal survey tests of the Space Station Common Module Prototype

This paper describes the testing aspects and the problems encountered during the free-free and fixed base modal surveys completed on the original Space Station Common Module Prototype (CMP). The CMP is a 40-ft long by 14.5-ft diameter 'waffle-grid' cylinder built by the Boeing Company and housed at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) near Huntsville, AL. The CMP modal survey tests were conducted at MSFC by the Dynamics Test Branch. The free-free modal survey tests (June '90 to Sept. '90) included interface verification tests (IFVT), often referred to as impedance measurements, mass-additive testing and linearity studies. The fixed base modal survey tests (Feb. '91 to April '91), including linearity studies, were conducted in a fixture designed to constrain the CMP in 7 total degrees-of-freedom at five trunnion interfaces (two primary, two secondary, and the keel). The fixture also incorporated an airbag off-load system designed to alleviate the non-linear effects of friction in the primary and secondary trunnion interfaces. Numerous test configurations were performed with the objective of providing a modal data base for evaluating the various testing methodologies to verify dynamic finite element models used for input to coupled load analysis.

Generalizing Backtrack-Free Search: A Framework for Search-Free Constraint Satisfaction

Tractable classes of constraint satisfaction problems are of great importance in artificial intelligence. Identifying and taking advantage of such classes can significantly speed up constraint problem solving. In addition, tractable classes are utilized in applications where strict worst-case performance guarantees are required, such as constraint-based plan execution. In this work, we present a formal framework for search-free (backtrack-free) constraint satisfaction. The framework is based on general procedures, rather than specific propagation techniques, and thus generalizes existing techniques in this area. We also relate search-free problem solving to the notion of decision sets and use the result to provide a constructive criterion that is sufficient to guarantee search-free problem solving.

Compilation of Test Data on 111 Free-Spinning Airplane Models Tested in the Langley 15-Foot and 20-Foot Free-Spinning Tunnels

A compilation of free-spinning-airplane model data on the spin and recovery characteristics of 111 airplanes is presented. These data were previously published in separate memorandum reports and were obtained from free-spinning tests in the Langley 15-foot and the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnels. The model test data presented include the steady-spin and recovery characteristics of each model for various combinations of aileron and elevator deflections and for various loadings and dimensional configurations. Dimensional data, mass data, and a three-view drawing of the corresponding free-spinning tunnel model are also presented for each airplane. The data presented should be of value to designers and should facilitate the design of airplanes incorporating satisfactory spin-recovery characteristics.

Free-Free Transitions in the Presence of Laser Fields and Debye Potential at Very Low Incident Electron Energies

We study the free-free transition in electron-helium ion in the ground state and embedded in a Debye potential in the presence of an external laser field at very low incident electron energies. The laser field is treated classically while the collision dynamics is treated quantum mechanically. The laser field is chosen as monochromatic, linearly polarized and homogeneous. The incident electron is considered to be dressed by the laser field in a nonperturbative manner by choosing Volkov wave function for it. The scattering wave function for the incident electron on the target embedded in a Debye potential is solved numerically by taking into account the effect of electron exchange. We calculate the laser-assisted differential and total cross sections for free-free transition for absorption/emission of a single photon or no photon exchange. The results will be presented at the conference.

Infrared Free Space Communication - The Autonomous Testing of Free Space Infrared Communication

Fiber optics has been a winning player in the game of high-speed communication and data transfer in cable connections. Yet, in free space RF has been the repeated choice of communication medium of the space industry. Investigating the benefits of free space optical communication over radio frequency is worthwhile. An increase in science data rate return capabilities could occur if optical communication is implemented. Optical communication systems also provide efficiencies in power, mass, and volume over RF systems1. Optical communication systems have been demonstrated from a satellite in orbit with the moon to earth, and resulted in the highest data rates ever seen through space (622Mbps)2. Because of these benefits, optical communication is far superior to RF. The HiDRA (High Data Rate Architecture) project is researching Passive Misalignment Mitigation of Dynamic Free Apace Optical Communication Links. The goal of this effort is to enable gigabit per second transmission of data in short range dynamic links (less than 100 meters). In practice this would enhance data rates between sites on the International Space Station with minimal size, weight, and power requirements. This paper will focus on an autonomous code and a hardware setup that will be used to fulfill the next step in the research being conducted. The free space optical communications pointing downfalls will be investigated. This was achieved by creating 5 python programs and a top-level code to automate this test.

Propulsion-free separation and rendezvous of small shuttle free-flyers using controlled differential drag

A natural successor in the Shuttle era to many sounding rocket flights is the free-flyer mode of operation, in which the Shuttle Orbiter releases a subsatellite (with payloads), effects a desired separation, and approaches and retrieves the free-layer. The propulsive maneuvers required of the Orbiter by equivalent relative motions obtained through controlled differential drag (via changes in free-layer effective area and/or Orbiter attitude changes) are replaced. Simplified analytical techniques are developed and feasibility is verified.

Propulsion-free separation and rendezvous of small Shuttle free-flyers using controlled differential drag

A natural successor in the Shuttle era to many sounding rocket flights is the free-flyer mode of operation, in which the Shuttle Orbiter releases a subsatellite (with payload), effects a desired separation, and finally approaches and retrieves the free-flyer. This paper proposes replacing, to the maximum extent feasible, the propulsive maneuvers required for the Orbiter by equivalent relative motions obtained through controlled differential drag (via changes in free-flyer effective area and/or Orbiter attitude changes). Simplified analytical techniques are developed and feasibility is verified. Several illustrative examples are specified (e.g., a 3-km separation in 1 day, with 4-day return).

Effects of unsteady free stream velocity and free stream turbulence on stagnation point heat transfer

The combined effects of transient free stream velocity and free stream turbulence on heat transfer at a stagnation point over a cylinder situated in a crossflow are studied. An eddy diffusivity model was formulated and the governing momentum and energy equations are integrated by means of the steepest descent method. The numerical results for the wall shear stress and heat transfer rate are correlated by a turbulence parameter. The wall friction and heat transfer rate increase with increasing free stream turbulence intensity.

Apparatus and method to keep the walls of a free-space reactor free from deposits of solid materials

An apparatus and method is disclosed for keeping interior walls of a reaction vessel free of undesirable deposits of solid materials in gas-to-solid reactions. The apparatus includes a movable cleaning head which is configured to be substantially complementary to the interior contour of the walls of the reaction vessel. The head ejects a stream of gas with a relatively high velocity into a narrow space between the head and the walls. The head is moved substantially continuously to at least intermittently blow the stream of gas to substantially the entire surface of the walls wherein undesirable solid deposition is likely to occur. The disclosed apparatus and process is particularly useful for keeping the walls of a free-space silane-gas-to-solid-silicon reactor free of undesirable silicon deposits.

Combined influence of unsteady free stream velocity and free stream turbulence on stagnation point heat transfer

An analysis is presented to study the combined effects of transient free stream velocity and free stream turbulence on heat transfer at a stagnation point over a cylinder situated in a crossflow. An expression for the eddy diffusivity has been formulated and the governing momentum and energy equations are integrated by means of the steepest descent method. The numerical results for the heat transfer rate are correlated by a turbulence parameter. It has been found that the stagnation point heat transfer rate increases with increasing free stream turbulence intensity.

Performance Modeling of a Pilot in a Free Flight Mode: A Free Flight Self-Separation Cancellations Due to the Requirement for Procedural Intervention - 1

Developments are being made that allow pilots to have more flexibility over the control of their aircraft. This new concept is called Free Flight. Free Flight strives to move the current air traffic system into an age where space technology is used to its fullest potential. Self-separation is one part of the Free Flight system. Self-separation provides pilots the opportunity to choose their own route to reach a specified destination provided that they maintain the 'minimum required separation distance between airplanes. In the event that pilots are unable to maintain separation, controllers will need to have the aircraft separation authority passed back to them. This situation is known as a procedural intervention point. This project attempted to examine and diagnose those particular situations in an effort to avoid reaching a procedural intervention point in the near future. Crews that reached procedural intervention points were compared with crews that made similar maneuver types in the same scenario, but did not reach procedural intervention points. Results showed that there were no significant differences between crews in a high-density acute angle flight conditions. However, significant differences in maneuver times, following the detection of an intruder aircraft and following the time the intruder aircraft came into view, were found in a low-density, acute angle scenario.

Growth of Defect-Free 3C-Sic on 4H- and 6H-SIC Mesas Using Step-Free Surface Heteroepitaxy

A new growth process, herein named step-free surface heteroepitaxy, has achieved 3C-SiC films completely free of double positioning boundaries and stacking faults on 4H-SiC and 6H-SiC substrate mesas. The process is based upon the initial 2-dimensional nucleation and lateral expansion of a single island of 3C-SiC on a 4H- or 6H-SiC mesa surface that is completely free of bilayer surface steps. Our experimental results indicate that substrate-epilayer in-plane lattice mismatch (Delta/a = 0.0854% for 3C/4H) is at least partially relieved parallel to the interface in the initial bilayers of the heterofilm, producing an at least partially relaxed 3C-SiC film without dislocations that undesirably thread through the thickness of the epilayer. This result should enable realization of improved 3C-SiC devices.

Laser Assisted Free-Free Transition in Electron - Atom Collision

Free-free transition is studied for electron-Hydrogen atom system in ground state at very low incident energies in presence of an external homogeneous, monochromatic and linearly polarized laser field. The incident electron is considered to be dressed by the laser in a non perturbative manner by choosing the Volkov solutions in both the channels. The space part of the scattering wave function for the electron is solved numerically by taking into account the effect of electron exchange, short range as well as of the long range interactions. Laser assisted differential as well as elastic total cross sections are calculated for single photon absorption/emission in the soft photon limit, the laser intensity being much less than the atomic field intensity. A strong suppression is noted in the laser assisted cross sections as compared to the field free situations. Significant difference is noted in the singlet and the triplet cross sections.

A strong suppression is noted in the laser-assisted cross sections as compared to the field-free situation. A significant difference is noted for the singlet and triplet cross sections. The suppression is much more in the triplet states.

Computer-aided design of stability enhanced nicotinamide cofactor biomimetics for cell-free biocatalysis

Cell-free biocatalysis (CFB) is an efficient and environmentally friendly method to synthesize molecules such as pharmaceuticals, biochemicals, and biofuels through the in vitro use of enzyme cascades. These enzymes often require redox cofactors to drive chemical reactions. Natural redox cofactors (NAD(P)H) are expensive to isolate, motivating synthetic nicotinamide cofactor biomimetics (NCBs) as a cost-effective solution. A select handful of NCBs have been identified as potential NAD(P)H alternatives with comparable or improved redox capabilities, however, they display a tendency to degrade in common buffers. In this study, a library of 132 NCB candidates is systematically generated, over 85% of which have not been characterized in the literature, to expand the diversity of currently explored NCBs. The decomposition mechanism of NCBs in phosphate is evaluated using density functional theory (DFT), revealing protonation at the nicotinamide C5 position as a reporter of cofactor stability. Based on this result, we trained a linear regression model on DFT calculated descriptors to predict NCB stability in phosphate buffer, achieving mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean squared error (RMSE) values within computational accuracy. Analysis of key atomic descriptors and qualitative trends in our dataset informed the design of novel NCB candidates we propose with optimized stability. This work enables researchers to predict the relative stability of NCBs before synthesis, thereby streamlining the process to make CFB more affordable and viable at industry scales.
