Beryllium Oxide (BeO) Handbook

Beryllium oxide (BeO) is an oxide ceramic material. BeO ceramics provide thermal conductivity second only to diamond among electrically insulating materials, dissipating nearly 300 W/mK at room temperature. This property leads to electronic applications for BeO. BeO has a thermal expansion coefficient intermediate between gallium arsenide and refractory metal composites. Its low dielectric constant (6.7) and low loss index (0.0012 at 1 MHz) permits electrical circuit performance at high frequencies. It is employed as a window material for high frequency microwave applications. BeO is very stable under oxidizing and reducing high temperature and high humidity environments, unlike nitrides which will decompose to their oxide equivalent. Similar to beryllium metal, BeO acts as a scatterer of neutrons and is used as a neutron moderator material in nuclear reactor applications. The largest use of BeO is as the raw material for the manufacture of beryllium-copper alloys, followed closely as the raw material for conversion to beryllium metal. Most of the research performed on BeO was conducted in the 1960’s and 1970’s. 75% of the references cited in this Handbook are from the time period 1960-1980. Up to 1995, there were three commercial sources of BeO: Materion Corporation, Eagle-Picher, and Ceradyne Corporation. However, since 1995 Eagle-Picher and Ceradyne no longer supply BeO commercial products. Thus, the only current commercial source of BeO materials is Materion Corporation.

Best Practices Handbook for the Collection and Use of Solar Resource Data for Solar Energy Applications: Third Edition

As the world looks for low-carbon sources of energy, solar power stands out as the single most abundant energy resource on Earth. Harnessing this energy is the challenge for this century. Photovoltaics, solar heating and cooling, and concentrating solar power (CSP) are primary forms of energy applications using sunlight. These solar energy systems use different technologies, collect different fractions of the solar resource, and have different siting requirements and production capabilities. Reliable information about the solar resource is required for every solar energy application. This holds true for small installations on a rooftop as well as for large solar power plants; however, solar resource information is of particular interest for large installations because they require substantial investment, sometimes exceeding 1 billion dollars in construction costs. Before such a project is undertaken, the best possible information about the quality and reliability of the fuel source must be made available. That is, project developers need reliable data about the solar resource available at specific locations, including historic trends with seasonal, daily, hourly, and (preferably) subhourly variability to predict the daily and annual performance of a proposed power plant. Without these data, an accurate financial analysis is not possible. Additionally, with the deployment of large amounts of distributed photovoltaics, there is an urgent need to integrate this source of generation to ensure the reliability and stability of the grid. Forecasting generation from the various sources will allow for larger penetrations of these generation sources because utilities and system operators can then ensure stable grid operations. Developed by the foremost experts in the field who have come together under the umbrella of the International Energy Agency’s Solar Heating and Cooling Task 46, this handbook summarizes state-of-the-art information about all these topics.

Advanced Moderator Material Handbook (FY22 Rev. 2)

High hydrogen density moderators such as metal hydrides are an important research topic within the DOE NE Microreactor Research, Development, and Deployment (RD&D) Program due to their ability to retain hydrogen to much higher temperatures than other hydrogenous media. This class of moderators, which includes yttrium dihydride (YH 2 ), thermalizes neutrons in the system such that the overall fuel mass or the required uranium enrichment in the system can be significantly reduced. Knowledge of material properties, both in the as-fabricated and irradiated state, are important to understanding moderator performance during steady-state and transient reactor operation. This document provides a detailed summary of the literature data on yttrium dihydride, thermomechanical and other property data, and a critical evaluation of that data. This handbook also provides a description of ongoing experiments to understand in-reactor performance, such as irradiations in ATR, as well as nuclear data from an integral critical experiment at NCERC. This report focuses on measured quantities but also includes some modeling results for comparison where applicable.

Uranium Mononitride (UN) Handbook

Uranium Mononitride (UN) is being reexamined as a high temperature advanced nuclear fuel in many reactor applications due to its high thermal conductivity, high melting point, and high fissionable uranium density, among other desirable properties. A thorough review of the experimental data for the material and irradiation properties has been collected and is presented in this handbook. As an outcome of this review, in many cases, it is apparent that additional experimental verification must be conducted to verify the available data and to verify the suggested empirical correlations.

Best Practices Handbook for the Collection and Use of Solar Resource Data for Solar Energy Applications: Fourth Edition

As the world increasingly seeks low-carbon energy solutions, solar power emerges as the most abundant resource on our planet. However, the challenge of effectively harnessing this energy is crucial in the coming years. Solar energy applications such as photovoltaics, solar heating and cooling, and concentrating solar power use different technologies to capitalize on sunlight. Each system has unique capabilities and requirements, underscoring the need for reliable information about solar resources across diverse installations, from residential rooftops to large-scale power plants. This is especially important for substantial projects, often exceeding $1 billion in construction costs. Before embarking on such ventures, it is imperative to obtain accurate data concerning solar resource quality and reliability at specific sites. Developers require detailed historical information, including seasonal, daily, hourly, and, ideally, subhourly variability to effectively predict a power plant's annual performance. Without these vital data, financial analyses fall short. Moreover, with the growing adoption of distributed photovoltaics, integrating these generation sources becomes critical to maintaining grid reliability and stability. By accurately forecasting generation patterns, utilities and system operators can facilitate greater integration of solar energy, thus ensuring the operational stability of the grid. The complexity and importance of these issues have prompted the foremost experts in the field to collaborate under the auspices of the International Energy Agency's (IEA's) Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (PVPS) Task 16 to publish this handbook, which summarizes state-of-the-art information about all these topics. The efforts focus on providing reliable data and insights that can help shape our investments in solar energy and drive a sustainable future.

Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (VDIS) Instrument Handbook

In order to improve the quantitative description of precipitation processes in climate models, the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility has been collecting observations of the drop size spectra of rain events since early in 2006 with impact disdrometers. While ARM is primarily interested in their contribution to the understanding of precipitation processes, disdrometers can also be used for traffic control, airport observation systems, and hydrology. The latest disdrometers employ microwave or laser technologies. Two-dimensional (2D) video disdrometers (VDIS) make the most detailed and complete observations of hydrometeor shape and fall velocity. Four of ARM’s five video disdrometers are deployed; the last is a spare. This handbook provides a detailed description of the instruments and their datastreams.
