Electrochemical Control of the Morphology and Functional Properties of Hierarchically Structured, Dendritic Cu Surfaces

Electrodeposited dendritic copper foams have been extensively studied as an electrocatalyst for CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Many parameters, such as dendrite size, porosity, pore size, and crystal faceting, define the hierarchical properties of these structures and their subsequent bubble evolution and CO 2 RR capabilities. Herein, the effects the electrodeposition conditions (potential, pH) have on the resulting crystallinity, microstructure, and macroporosity of the copper foam are studied. These morphological differences and the corresponding effects on electrocatalytic activity are characterized. It is shown that the composition of the electrodeposition bath can have significant effects on the mechanics of bubble formation and detachment at the surface during hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic solutions. Similarly, the electrodeposition conditions for the synthesis of the foam affect the product selectivity during CO 2 RR electrocatalysis. As a result, foams deposited in alkaline electrodeposition solutions show high faradaic efficiency and specificity toward C 2 H 6 , an uncommon product of CO 2 RR, at modest applied potentials (−0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode.

Enhanced Arsenic (III and V) Removal in Anoxic Environments by Hierarchically Structured Citrate/FeCO 3 Nanocomposites

Novel citrate/FeCO 3 nanocomposites (CF-NCs) were synthesized for effective arsenic (III and V) sorption with constant addition of Fe2+ into HCO 3 - solution in the presence of citrate. This paper is the first report on the formation of CF-NCs, and in this study we investigate the mechanisms of arsenic uptake by the sorbent under anoxic conditions through various solid- and liquid-phase spectroscopic methods, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In CF-NCs, citrate was found to be incorporated into the structure of siderite (up to 17.94%) through (Fe 2+ citrate) - complexes. The crystal morphology of rhombohedral siderite was changed into hierarchically nanostructured spherical aggregates composed of several sheet-like crystals, which improved the surface reactivity in the presence of sufficient citrate. Compared to pure siderite (15.2%), enhanced removal of As(III) in the range of 19.3% to 88.2% was observed, depending on the amount of incorporated citrate. The maximum sorption capacities of CF-NCs for As(III) and As(V) were 188.97 and 290.22 mg/g, respectively, which are much higher than those of previously reported siderite-based adsorbents. It was found that arsenic (III and V) sorption on CF-NCs occurred via bidentate corner-sharing surface complexation, predominantly without changes in the arsenic oxidation states. These results suggest that arsenic (III and V) can be attenuated by siderite in anoxic environments, and this attenuation can be even more effective when siderite is modified by incorporation of organic compounds such as citrate.

A hierarchical structure for automatic meshing and adaptive FEM analysis

A new algorithm for generating automatically, from solid models of mechanical parts, finite element meshes that are organized as spatially addressable quaternary trees (for 2-D work) or octal trees (for 3-D work) is discussed. Because such meshes are inherently hierarchical as well as spatially addressable, they permit efficient substructuring techniques to be used for both global analysis and incremental remeshing and reanalysis. The global and incremental techniques are summarized and some results from an experimental closed loop 2-D system in which meshing, analysis, error evaluation, and remeshing and reanalysis are done automatically and adaptively are presented. The implementation of 3-D work is briefly discussed.

Toward controlled functional sequencing and hierarchical structuring in imidazolium ionenes

This focused mini-review highlights recent advances related to the design and applications of imidazolium ionenes and forward-looking perspectives. Creative strategies which employ established synthetic approaches and utilize the modularity of the imidazole moiety unlock great potential for tailoring both functional and structural features arising from precise spacing of ionic groups within the polymer backbone. Here, as imidazolium ionenes draw more interest, increased sophistication of chemical modifications and material processing is occurring, with a corresponding shift toward more demanding applications. Synthetic routes for placement and sequencing of ionic content are discussed, in addition to recent approaches to control structure and self-assembly or tune behaviors of imidazolium ionenes and composites.

Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering Reveals Hierarchical Structure in a Multicomponent Vapor-Deposited Glass

Multiphase vapor-deposited glasses are an important class of materials for organic electronics, particularly organic photovoltaics and thermoelectrics. These blends are frequently regarded as molecular alloys and there have been few studies of their structure at nanometer scales. Here, in this work, we show that a codeposited system of TPD (N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine) and DO37 (disperse orange 37), two small molecule glass-formers, separates into amorphous, compositionally distinct phases with a domain size and spacing ca. 10s of nanometers that depends on substrate temperature during deposition. Domains rich in one of the two components become larger and more pure at higher deposition temperatures. We use resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSoXS) complemented with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoinduced force microscopy to measure the phase separation, topography, and purity of the deposited films. A forward-simulation approach to RSoXS analysis, the National Institute of Standards and Technology RSoXS Simulation Suite (NIST RSoXS simulation suite), is used with models developed from AFM images to evaluate the energy dependence of scattering across multiple length scales and interpret the RSoXS with respect to structure within the films. We find that the RSoXS is sensitive to a length scale of phase separation buried within the film that is consistent with the surface composition profile, and correlates to the topography to an extent that depends on substrate temperature. We demonstrate that vacuum scattering, which is often ignored in RSoXS analysis, contributes significantly to the features and energy dependence of the RSoXS pattern, and then illustrate how to properly account for vacuum scattering to analyze films with significant roughness. We then use this analysis framework to understand structure development mechanisms that occur during vapor deposition of a TPD-DO37 codeposited glass with results that outline paths to tune morphology in multicomponent materials.

Hierarchal structures tuned electrocaloric and electromechanical performance in PVDF-based tetrapolymers

Ferroelectrics with multifunctionalities are gaining increased interest in self-actuated electrocaloric effect (ECE) refrigerators. However, achieving high ECE and electromechanical (EM) coupling concomitantly for maximum heat transfer remains challenging. Here we present the structure-property relationship for poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene-co-chlorofluoroethylene-co-double bond), P(VDF-TrFE-CFE-DB), tetrapolymer, which exhibited a high ECE entropy change of 66.5 J Kg −1 K −1 and EM strain of −6.1%. We show that thermal treatment can be a key factor influencing multifunctional properties. High-temperature annealing incorporates DB and CFE units into crystalline grains to form extended-chain crystals, enabling CFE units to induce relaxor behavior and DB units to induce large structural changes at low electric fields. This synergy leads to an enhancement in both ECE and EM performances. Furthermore, at an optimized temperature of 50 °C, the annealed films exhibit giant cross-energy coupling, achieving ECE and EM performances of 100.8 J Kg −1 K −1 and −7.6%. This study provides insights into developing new ferroelectric polymers with electroactive multifunctionalities.

Combining qualitative and quantitative spatial and temporal information in a hierarchical structure: Approximate reasoning for plan execution monitoring

The problem of plan generation (PG) and the problem of plan execution monitoring (PEM), including updating, queries, and resource-bounded replanning, have different reasoning and representation requirements. PEM requires the integration of qualitative and quantitative information. PEM is the receiving of data about the world in which a plan or agent is executing. The problem is to quickly determine the relevance of the data, the consistency of the data with respect to the expected effects, and if execution should continue. Only spatial and temporal aspects of the plan are addressed for relevance in this work. Current temporal reasoning systems are deficient in computational aspects or expressiveness. This work presents a hybrid qualitative and quantitative system that is fully expressive in its assertion language while offering certain computational efficiencies. In order to proceed, methods incorporating approximate reasoning using hierarchies, notions of locality, constraint expansion, and absolute parameters need be used and are shown to be useful for the anytime nature of PEM.
