First Principles Cable Braid Electromagnetic Penetration Model - Potential Impedance Clarification

In this report the lack of assumed connectivity between braid carriers imposes the need to use the original magnetic vector potential formulas for transfer and self impedances rather than the final simplified results in the magnetic coupling and propagation formulas. Each of the magnetic sections in the previous journal article and Sandia report are addressed with references to the appropriate formulas.

Modeling and Harmonic Stability of MMC-HVDC With Passive Circulating Current Filters

A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is an emerging converter technology widely used in wind power applications using high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, and it has been largely investigated in medium-voltage solar harvesting as well as electric motor drives. Different from studies dealing with active circulating current control loops, this paper focuses on impedance modeling and harmonic stability studies for MMCs with passive circulating current filters (PCCFs). A power stage circuit including a PCCF is transformed and remodeled to obtain small-signal formulations. This transformation leads to additional high-order matrix computing complexity due to the added impedance subnetwork matrix from the PCCF as well as relevant crossed-frequency impacts. To simplify the computational burden, the proposed model aims to solve one arm equation instead of all six MMC arm equations. To achieve this result, additional challenges occur when the MMC is connected to a renewable energy source instead of the grid voltage, where low-level zero-sequence components might exist in the neutral point of three phases, especially in the case of no integrated advanced modular voltage balancing control, which prevents computational simplification. To overcome this challenge, further impedance matrix adjustments are conducted in this paper to theoretically suppress the impact of zero-sequence harmonics when obtaining small-signal impedance, taking into account the frequency coupling effect. Finally, simulations are carried out to validate the developed impedance model under different operating scenarios. Harmonic stability case studies of MMCs with PCCFs connected to renewable energy current sources are also presented, where frequency-domain stability analyses based on Bode diagrams are compared to time-domain simulation waveforms and FFTs, which validate the effectiveness of the proposed impedance model.

Analytical estimates of beam intensity limitations in the EIC Beam Accumulator Ring

This report summarizes analytical estimates of beam intensity limitations in the Beam Accumulator Ring (BAR), a part of the Electron-Ion Collider injector complex under development at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The BAR is designed to accumulate a polarized electron beam with a single-bunch charge up to 28 nC for subsequent acceleration in the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron and then injection into the Electron Storage Ring. Analytical models of longitudinal and transverse collective effects are developed using a broadband impedance model calibrated with the beam-based measurement results from NSLS VUV. The study evaluates the impact of resistive-wall and geometric impedances, assessing microwave and transverse mode coupling instabilities, bunch lengthening, and beam-induced heating.

Wideband Impedance Passivation of MMCs for Suppressing Harmonic Oscillations

Harmonic instability and associated oscillation events have become one of the main concerns in MMC-based HVdc systems. These oscillations can appear in the range from a few hundred hertz to several kilohertz, and the root cause is identified as delay-induced negative damping of MMC impedance appearing at the system resonance frequency. Here, this paper introduces a wideband impedance reshaping method through MMC control to eliminate such negative damping for both grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) MMCs, which makes the MMC impedance completely passive from the second harmonic frequency upward, thus preventing all harmonic oscillations. First, simplified impedance models of MMCs are derived for the harmonic stability analysis and the impedance reshaping control design. Next, a passivity-based impedance reshaping method is presented, as well as practical considerations for its implementation. In addition, to maintain the MMC's disturbance ride-through capability, an adaptive activation scheme is developed, which enables the wideband impedance reshaping control only in the presence of harmonic oscillation events. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by frequency domain analysis and by electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of two typical MMC-based power systems.

Power Decoupling Method for Voltage Source Inverters Using Grid Voltage Modulated Direct Power Control in Unbalanced System

The grid voltage modulated direct power control (GVM-DPC) is a novel power regulation method for grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSI). However, interactions between real and reactive powers still exist in GVM-DPC under unbalanced grid voltage condition, which may deteriorate its transient performance. Here, this article proposes a power decoupling method for GVM-DPC-based VSI in unbalanced systems based on the dynamic feedforward power compensation strategy, which can reduce the coupling magnitudes of real and reactive powers in the transient stages. First, the power coupling mechanism of positive and negative sequence real and reactive powers of VSI under the unbalanced voltage condition is analyzed. Then, the power coupling magnitudes (PCM) are derived according to relationships among the positive sequence components of real power, reactive power and point of common coupling (PCC) voltages. Next, the PCM are compensated into the GVM-DPC for the better decoupling performance. Furthermore, a stability analysis of the proposed control system is studied based on the impedance model, and a comparison with the traditional power decoupling method based on virtual impedance is conducted to show the superiority of the proposed method. Finally, simulations, hardware-in-loop test and experiment are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Fast Scanning Diamond Detector for Electron Beam Profile Monitoring

The first prototype of a fast scanning diamond beam profile detector (DBPD) suitable for invasive high power CW electron beam core profile measurements in transmittance mode was developed. It consists of a multi-strip solid state diamond detector to scan with high speed (up to 1 m/s) and precision (about 5 μm) through the core of an electron beam. The diamond sensor was made from a thin polycrystalline diamond (PCD) plate with highly B-doped diamond conductive strips both grown by CVD. Transient currents from the multi-strip detector were measured with fast digitizing electrometers. Successful operation of the DBPD was demonstrated for pulsed (5 Hz) and CW (78 kHz) CeC beams, including the detector’s ability to withstand a 20 sec insertion into the CW CeC beam core. The X-Y beam spatial profile was measured in one scan. Thermal modelling demonstrated a manageable thermal impact even from a relatively long insertion of the diamond sensor into the CW CeC core and very short (0.2 s) insertion into the CW LEReC beam core. Electrical impedance modelling of the detector and vacuum chamber assembly demonstrated minimal impact on beam line impedance with diamond sensor insertion.

Hierarchical Control and Stability Analysis for a Nonisolated Grid-Tied DC Energy Router Integrating Energy Storage and Partial Distributed Generation

This article proposes a nonisolated dc converter-based energy router (dc-ER) and its operating strategy. Here, the intent is to integrate energy storage (ES), distributed generation (DG), local load, and dc power grid in an autonomous and more efficient way. The ES/DG power ports are coupled with each other in partial-type connections, which obtains higher voltage supply gain and direct input–output power transmission. High-voltage supply gain allows a wide solar power tracking range and the possibility of optimal battery charging/discharging. Direct input–output power transmission improves the energy conversion efficiency. In this article, the operating modes of dc-ER are first analyzed, followed by the optimal hardware design counting the DG current ripple minimization and the limitation caused by the power flow direction. Second, the mathematical model of dc-ER is deduced. The hierarchical control is then proposed to manage port energy in a flexible manner. The stability is analyzed by using impedance modeling. Finally, experimental and simulation results verify the superiorities of the proposed topology in terms of flexible operating mode transition and high-power conversion efficiency.

Impedance Response Influenced by Variability in the Random Distribution of Physical Properties of Coated Materials in Two-Dimensional Space

Heterogeneous physical characteristics of a system featuring a single-layer film on a metallic surface have been explored via its impedance response. The Nyquist plot showed a distorted semicircle, indicative of the system's unique distribution characteristics. Utilizing a copula-based probability method, a two-dimensional deterministic impedance model was successfully integrated, accounting for spatial physical properties such as permittivity and electrical conductivity. This strategy enabled in-depth exploration and mechanistic quantification of a broad spectrum of properties. A quantitative understanding of impedance signal alterations, characterized by normally or log-normally correlated variables, was achieved through the variation in aspect ratio and characteristic frequency of the impedance spectra. Log-normally distributed electrical properties provided a superior representation of the distorted impedance spectra. As coefficient of variation (CV) values fluctuated, the aspect ratio and characteristic frequency showed heightened sensitivity to log-normal permittivity compared to log-normal electrical conductivity. Notably, a marked positive linear correlation between electrical properties resulted in an impedance response that approximated perfect semicircular spectra. The variability in the electrical properties' distribution was demonstrated by considering the correlation coefficient between electrical conductivity and the z-direction position. Furthermore, the highest aspect ratio of the impedance spectra was observed when the electrical conductivity was randomly distributed across the z-direction space.

Ising-CF: A Pathbreaking Collaborative Filtering Method Through Efficient Ising Machine Learning

Due to Ising models’ strong expressivity and Ising machines’ unique computational power, it is highly desired if Ising-based learning can be used in real-world applications. Unfortunately, the challenges in learning Ising models and gaps between the practical accuracy of Ising machines and the theoretical accuracy of Ising models impede the realization of Ising machines’ potential. Hence, we propose an Ising Machine Learning framework, Ising-CF, for collaborative filtering, a widely-used recommendation method. Specifically, Ising-CF uses Linear Neural Networks with Besag’s pseudo-likelihood and voltage polarization for fast, accurate Ising model learning and an Ising-specific logarithmic quantization for ns-level Ising machine inference with near-theoretical accuracy, 7.3% over SOTA.

Visual Tool for Assessing Stability of DER Configurations on Three-Phase Radial Networks

Here, we present a method and tool for evaluating the placement of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) on distribution circuits in order to control voltages and power flows. Our previous work described Phasor-Based Control (PBC), a novel control framework where DERs inject real and reactive power to track voltage magnitude and phase angle targets. Here, we employ linearized power flow equations and integral controllers to develop a linear state space model for PBC acting on a three-phase unbalanced network. We use this model to evaluate whether a given inverter-based DER configuration admits a stable set of controller gains, which cannot be done by analyzing controllability nor by using the Lyapunov equation. Instead, we sample over a parameter space to identify a stable set of controller gains. Our stability analysis requires only a line impedance model and does not entail simulating the system or solving an optimization problem. We incorporate this assessment into a publicly available visualization tool and demonstrate three processes for evaluating many control configurations on the IEEE 123-node test feeder (123NF).

Three-dimensional seismic characterization and imaging of the Soda Lake geothermal field

Accurate characterization of subsurface geophysical properties and detection of the fault system are essential for geothermal energy exploration and production. The Soda Lake geothermal field is in western Nevada with a complex fault system. Previous seismic characterization only produced a low-resolution, smooth velocity model along with a simple, conceptual fault model. Using optimized correlation-based full-waveform inversion, wavefield-separation-based reverse-time migration, and automatic fault detection techniques, we present 3D seismic characterization for the Soda Lake geothermal field using 3D surface seismic data acquired with Vibroseis sources. Here, we obtain 3D high-resolution velocity, density, and acoustic impedance models, 3D seismic images with different grid spacings, and a high-resolution fault system. Consistency check between the constructed faults and currently active injection and production geothermal wells verifies that our seismic inversion and imaging results and detected faults are reliable. These results can provide valuable information for optimizing well placement and geothermal energy production at the Soda Lake geothermal field.

Challenges and Solutions for Real-Time Phasor Modeling of Large-scale Distribution Network with High PV Penetration

The conversion process of a practical large-scale feeder data from a quasi-static time series (OpenDSS) model into a real-time phasor model (ePHASORSIM in Opal-RT) is discussed in the paper. The process is implemented using an open source Python software. Previous reported implementations for the conversion process lead to several errors when applied to a larger-scale system such as the one considered here. Hence in this work, we describe the common issues in this conversion and propose a customized solution to enhance the efficiency of the conversion and reduce the complexity in the process. A quantitative validation of the enhanced conversion process is presented in this work using an actual high PV penetration feeder model that consists of 2230 buses, and using actual load and PV profile data. After a detailed analysis, this customized conversion software will be made available as an open source tool and is expected to be helpful for researchers who want to pursue a similar conversion. Solutions to various observed issues such as identifying the lines due to islanded network, representation of full impedance model of transformer/lines as sequential models, complexity in the representation of single phase buses/lines as three phase buses/lines to make it compatible with the simulator platform are discussed. Comparison of power flow and time series simulation results obtained from both OpenDSS and ePHASORsim models show very low errors, validating the accuracy of the proposed conversion process.

Effect of Pressurization on Solid Oxide Cell Oxygen Electrodes: the Role of PrO x Nanoparticle Infiltration

Pressurization of solid oxide cells improves performance by reducing electrode polarization resistance (R P ) and facilitates system integration with balance of plant components such as pressurized storage tanks. However, there are few reports on pressurization effects for electrodes designed for low-temperature operation and utilizing infiltrated catalysts. Here we report an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study of high performing oxygen electrode materials, SrTi 0.3 Fe 0.63 Co 0.07 O 3-∂ (STFC) and PrO x infiltrated STFC, for oxygen partial pressures ($p$ $o$ 2 ) from 0.1 to 8 atm and temperatures from 550 to 650 °C. decreases more with pressurization for STFC:PrO x , fitting well to with an exponent n~0.3, compared to n~0.25 for STFC. The combination of PrO x infiltration and pressurization yields a substantial R P decrease, e.g., at 600 °C by ~7 times from 0.36 Ω cm 2 at $p$ $o$ 2 = 0.2 atm for STFC to 0.055 Ω cm 2 at $p$ $o$ 2 = 4 atm for STFC:PrO x . Here, a transmission-line-based circuit model impedance fit reveals that the significant oxygen surface reaction (R surf ) resistance contribution decreases substantially with PrO x infiltration; and its $p$ $o$ 2 dependence become more pronounced, with n increasing from ~0.25 to ~0.5. R surf for STFC:PrO x decreases so much at elevated $p$ $o$ 2 that the electrode/electrolyte interface resistance dominates.

Featureless adaptive optimization accelerates functional electronic materials design

Electronic materials that exhibit phase transitions between metastable states (e.g., metal-insulator transition materials with abrupt electrical resistivity transformations) are challenging to decode. For these materials, conventional machine learning methods display limited predictive capability due to data scarcity and the absence of features that impede model training. In this article, we demonstrate a discovery strategy based on multi-objective Bayesian optimization to directly circumvent these bottlenecks by utilizing latent variable Gaussian processes combined with high-fidelity electronic structure calculations for validation in the chalcogenide lacunar spinel family. We directly and simultaneously learn phase stability and bandgap tunability from chemical composition alone to efficiently discover all superior compositions on the design Pareto front. Previously unidentified electronic transitions also emerge from our featureless adaptive optimization engine. Our methodology readily generalizes to optimization of multiple properties, enabling co-design of complex multifunctional materials, especially where prior data is sparse.

Using the Stix finite element RF code to investigate operation optimization of the ICRF antenna on Alcator C-Mod

Abstract As the Ion Cyclotron Radio Frequency range (ICRF) heating becomes more favorable in fusion devices, the urgency of predicting and mitigating impurity generation that arises from it becomes more pressing. In the ICRF regime, rectified Radio Frequency (RF) sheaths are known to form at antenna and material edges that influence negative effects like sputtering and a decrease in heating efficiency. Methods to mitigate the formation of these RF sheaths through RF image currents cancellation have been experimentally studied. A power-phasing scan done on Alcator C-Mod in which the amount of power on the two inner straps ( P in ) versus the total 4 straps ( P tot ) was varied showed a minimization of enhanced potentials between P in / P tot ∼ 0.7–0.9 while impurities were minimized for P in / P tot ∼ 0.5–0.8. New capabilities in the realm of representing the RF sheath numerically now allow for these experiments to be simulated. Given the size of the sheath relative to the scale of the device, it can be approximated as a Boundary Condition (BC). A new parallelized cold-plasma wave equation solver called Stix implements a non-linear sheath impedance model BC formulated by Myra et al (2015 Phys. Plasmas 22 062507) through the method of finite elements using the MFEM library [ http://mfem.org ]. It is seen that Stix shows qualitative agreement with the measured C-Mod enhanced potentials.

Generic Multi-Frequency Modelling of Converter-Connected Renewable Energy Generators Considering Frequency and Sequence Couplings

Frequency and sequence couplings can compromise the trustworthiness of multi-frequency models for converter-based systems. There have been effective attempts to address the couplings mainly by linearized averaged models. Only a few studies have been conducted on practical optimization of such models with enormous matrices and experimental results. This paper provides a generic theory for coupling patterns and proposes a multi-frequency modelling method to detect and address only the main couplings in the sequence domain for converter-connected renewable energy generators. The proposed generic model is based on empirical tests using small-signal perturbations and adopting Fourier transform on the switching converter response. The proposed theory and modelling methodology are verified using a 7MVA grid emulator for voltage perturbation tests on a 2MVA photo-voltaic converter. Accordingly, the couplings can exist in more generic forms, including multiples of perturbation and fundamental frequencies. To the best of our knowledge, the patterns with the multiples of the perturbation frequency have been overlooked in the literature. Furthermore, the mirror frequency concept is valid for all coupling patterns and is included in the proposed model. Besides, the proposed patterns and the environment noise levels have been practical criteria for selecting the main couplings.

Sm 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3-δ Surface Modification of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ -Ce 0.9 Gd0.1 2-δ Composite Oxygen Electrodes for Solid Oxide Electrochemical Cells

La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3- δ -Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 2- δ (LSCF-GDC) composite oxygen electrodes have been widely used in intermediate temperature (<700 °C) solid oxide cells, with composite usually providing better electrochemical performance than single-phase LSCF. However, LSCF-based electrodes are often observed to degrade over time due to Sr segregation. Here we present an impedance spectroscopy study comparing the degradation behaviors of LSCF-GDC and Sm 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3- δ (SSC) infiltrated LSCF-GDC electrodes. The LSCF-GDC polarization resistance increases by ~5 times over ~1000 h at 650 °C. In contrast, the SSC-infiltrated electrode shows similar initial polarization resistance but much more stable performance. The impedance modeling results show that the improved stability is associated with the low frequency oxygen dissociative adsorption/desorption process. The results suggest that this adsorption/desorption process slows due to increased Sr segregation on LSCF over time, and that SSC does not degrade significantly due to Sr surface segregation.
