The rotational spectrum of the CH radical in its a 4Sigma(-) state, studied by far-infrared laser magnetic resonance

The CH radical has been detected in its a 4Sigma(-) state by the technique of laser magnetic resonance at far-infrared wavelengths. Spectra relating to different spin components of the first three rotational transitions have been recorded. The molecule was generated either by the reaction of F atoms with CH4, with a trace of added oxygen or by the reaction of O atoms with C2H2. The observed resonances have been analyzed and fitted to determine the parameters of an effective Hamiltonian for a molecule in a 4Sigma state. The principal quantities determined are the rotational constant B0 = 451 138.434(94) MHz and the spin-spin parameter lambda(0) = 2785.83(18) MHz. Proton hyperfine parameters have also been determined.

Accurate determination of the fine-structure intervals in the 3P ground states of C-13 and C-12 by far-infrared laser magnetic resonance

Accurate values are presented for the fine-structure intervals in the 3P ground state of neutral atomic C-12 and C-13 as obtained from laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The rigorous analysis of C-13 hyperfine structure, the measurement of resonant fields for C-12 transitions at several additional far-infrared laser frequencies, and the increased precision of the C-12 measurements, permit significant improvement in the evaluation of these energies relative to earlier work. These results will expedite the direct and precise measurement of these transitions in interstellar sources and should assist in the determination of the interstellar C-12/C-13 abundance ratio.

Optical resonator and laser applications

The invention discloses a semi-ring Fabry-Perot (SRFP) optical resonator structure comprising a medium including an edge forming a reflective facet and a waveguide within the medium, the waveguide having opposing ends formed by the reflective facet. The performance of the SRFP resonator can be further enhanced by including a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the waveguide on one side of the gain medium. The optical resonator can be employed in a variety of optical devices. Laser structures using at least one SRFP resonator are disclosed where the resonators are disposed on opposite sides of a gain medium. Other laser structures employing one or more resonators on one side of a gain region are also disclosed.

Laser magnetic resonance in supersonic plasmas - The rotational spectrum of SH(+)

The rotational spectrum of v = 0 and v = 1X3Sigma(-)SH(+) was measured by laser magnetic resonance. Rotationally cold (Tr = 30 K), vibrationally excited (Tv = 3000 K) ions were generated in a corona excited supersonic expansion. The use of this source to identify ion signals is described. Improved molecular parameters were obtained; term values are presented from which astrophysically important transitions may be calculated. Accurate hyperfine parameters for both vibrational levels were determined and the vibrational dependence of the Fermi contact interaction was resolved. The hyperfine parameters agree well with recent many-body perturbation theory calculations.

The direct measurement of the 3 3P0-3 3P1 fine-structure interval and the gJ-factor of atomic silicon by laser magnetic resonance

The J - 1 fine structure interval and the g-factor of the 3P1 state have been determined with high precision in the present laser magnetic resonance measurements of the ground 3p2 3P multiplet of atomic Si. Delta-E(3P1-3P0) = 2,311,755.6(7) MHz, and gJ(3P1) = 1.500830(70). Single-configuration calculations of gJ for 3P1 and 3P2 yield a value for the latter which, at 1.501095, is noted to differ by an unexpectedly large margin from the experimental value.

Confocal unstable-resonator semiconductor laser

GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructure lasers with a monolithic confocal unstable resonator were demonstrated. The curved mirrors satisfying the confocal condition were fabricated by etching. Close to threshold, the lasers operate in a single lateral mode with a nearly collimated output beam. A single-lobe far-field intensity distribution as narrow as 1.9-deg full width at half maximum was measured.

A solid state tunable laser for resonance measurements of atmospheric sodium

The measurement of wave dynamics in the upper mesosphere using a solid-state laser to excite the resonance fluorescence line of sodium is examined. Two Nd:YAG lasers are employed to produce the sodium resonance line. The method involves mixing the 1064 nm radiation with that from a second Nd:YAG operating at 1319 nm in a nonlinear infrared crystal to directly produce 589 nm radiation by sum frequency generation. The use of the transmitter to measure the sodium layer from the Space Shuttle Platform is proposed. A diagram of the laser transmitter is presented.

Far-infrared laser magnetic resonance of vibrationally excited CD2

The detection of 13 rotational transitions in the first excited bending state (010) of CD2 using the technique of far-infrared laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy is reported. Molecular parameters for this state are determined from these new data together with existing infrared observations of the v(2) band. Additional information on the ground vibrational state (000) is also provided by the observation of a new rotational transition, and this is combined with existing data to provide a refined set of molecular parameters for the CD2 ground state. One spectrum has been observed that is assigned as a rotational transition within the first excited symmetric stretching state (100) of CD2. These data will be of use in refining the structure and the potential function of the methylene radical.

Infrared and far-infrared laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the GeH radical - Determination of ground state parameters

The GeH radical has been detected in its ground 2 Pi state in the gas phase reaction of fluorine atoms with GeH4 by laser magnetic resonance techniques. Rotational transitions within both 2 Pi 1/2 and 2 Pi 3/2 manifolds have been observed at far-infrared wavelengths and rotational transitions between the two fine structure components have been detected at infrared wavelengths (10 microns). Signals have been observed for all five naturally occurring isotopes of germanium. Nuclear hyperfine structure for H-1 and Ge-73 has also been observed. The data for the dominant isotope (/Ge-74/H) have been fitted to within experimental error by an effective Hamiltonian to give a set of molecular parameters for the X 2 Pi state which is very nearly complete. In addition, the dipole moment of GeH in its ground state has been estimated from the relative intensities of electric and magnetic dipole transitions in the 10 micron spectrum to be 1.24(+ or - 0.10) D.

Folded cavity design for a ruby resonator

A folded cavity laser resonator operating in the TEM(00) mode has been built and tested. The new oscillator configuration leads to an increase in efficiency and to better line narrowing due to the increased number of passes through the laser rod and tuning elements, respectively. The modification is shown to lead to cavity ruggedization.

Density measurement in compressible flows using off-resonant laser-induced fluoresence

Measurement of molecular number density in compressible flows using laser-induced fluorescence is complicated by collisional quenching of the exicited state. It is shown that by exciting the fluorescence off-resonance the signal becomes proportional to number density and independent of collisional effects. Quantitative measurement of density in an underexpanded jet of nitrogen is demonstrated using off-resonant fluoresence from iodine seed molecules irradiated with the 514.5 nm line of the argon-ion laser.

Femtosecond pulses generated from a synchronously pumped chromium-doped forsterite laser

Kerr lens mode-locking (KLM) has become a standard method to produce femtosecond pulses from tunable solid state lasers. High power inside the laser resonator propagating through the laser-medium with nonlinear index of refraction, coupled with the stability conditions of the laser modes in the resonator, result in a passive amplitude modulation which explains the mechanism for pulse shortening. Recently, chromium doped forsterite was shown to exhibit similar pulse behavior. A successful attempt to generate femtosecond pulses from a synchronously pumped chromium-doped forsterite laser with intracavity dispersion compensation is reported. Stable, transform limited pulses with duration of 105 fs were routinely generated, tunable between 1240 to 1270 nm.

Method and circuit for shaping laser output pulses

The invention is a method and circuit for shaping laser output pulses from a laser resonator. A Q-switch and polarizer act in combination to control the loss to the resonator and provide the laser output representative of such loss. An optical diode senses the level of the output pulse and provides an output signal that when amplified is used to control voltage from a supply to provide a control signal which is applied to the Q-switch to control the shape of the output pulse by adjusting its length.
