NASA-DoD Lead-Free Electronics Project: Vibration Test

Vibration testing was conducted by Boeing Research and Technology (Seattle) for the NASA-DoD Lead-Free Electronics Solder Project. This project is a follow-on to the Joint Council on Aging Aircraft/Joint Group on Pollution Prevention (JCAA/JG-PP) Lead-Free Solder Project which was the first group to test the reliability of lead-free solder joints against the requirements of the aerospace/miLItary community. Twenty seven test vehicles were subjected to the vibration test conditions (in two batches). The random vibration Power Spectral Density (PSD) input was increased during the test every 60 minutes in an effort to fail as many components as possible within the time allotted for the test. The solder joints on the components were electrically monitored using event detectors and any solder joint failures were recorded on a Labview-based data collection system. The number of test minutes required to fail a given component attached with SnPb solder was then compared to the number of test minutes required to fail the same component attached with lead-free solder. A complete modal analysis was conducted on one test vehicle using a laser vibrometer system which measured velocities, accelerations, and displacements at one . hundred points. The laser vibrometer data was used to determine the frequencies of the major modes of the test vehicle and the shapes of the modes. In addition, laser vibrometer data collected during the vibration test was used to calculate the strains generated by the first mode (using custom software). After completion of the testing, all of the test vehicles were visually inspected and cross sections were made. Broken component leads and other unwanted failure modes were documented.

Lead-free Cesium Europium Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Because of the toxicity of lead, searching for a lead-free halide perovskite semiconducting material with comparable optical and electronic properties is of great interest. Rare-earth-based halide perovskite represents a promising class of materials for this purpose. In this work, we demonstrate the solution-phase synthesis of single-crystalline CsEuCl 3 nanocrystals with a uniform size distribution centered around 15 nm. The CsEuCl 3 nanocrystals have photoluminescence emission centered at 435 nm, with a full width at half-maximum of 19 nm. Furthermore, CsEuCl 3 nanocrystals can be embedded in a polymer matrix that provides enhanced stability under continuous laser irradiation. Lead-free rare-earth cesium europium halide perovskite nanocrystals represent a promising candidate to replace lead halide perovskites.

Structure, Morphology, and Photovoltaic Implications of Halide Alloying in Lead-Free Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl x I 9-x 2D-Layered Perovskites

Compositional tuning has been a major driving force behind the excellent optoelectronic properties observed in typical Pb-based perovskites. For lead-free perovskite derivatives, a challenge to understanding the connection between compositional tuning and intrinsic optoelectronic properties, hence a barrier towards boosting their performance, comes from the fact that multiple crystalline substructures can form based on composition, film processing, or both. Especially with lower dimensional (0D, 1D, 2D) substructures, the particular polymorph present in the film can be a greater determinant of optoelectronic properties than the composition itself. Herein, we report a simple method to alloy the halide site in all-inorganic lead-free Cs 3 Sb 2 I 9 films while maintaining a consistent 2D-layered substructure, as a means to independently study the photovoltaic implications of halide substitution. We use a broad suite of spectroscopy and device measurements to identify an optimal stoichiometric substitution of chloride for iodide (~ 8 mol%, measured) that balances both intrinsic and bulk optoelectronic properties to achieve a top power conversion efficiency of 2.2%. This work underscores the importance of controlling substructure while investigating the impacts of compositional tuning for the development of lead-free perovskites, and more broadly validates the approach towards realizing lead-free alternative perovskite solar technologies.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). depots. and support contractors have to be prepared to deal with an electronics supply chain thaI increasingly provides parts with lead-free finishes. some labeled no differently and intenningled with their SnPb counterparts. Allowance oflead-free components presents one of the greatest risks to the reliability of military and aerospace electronics. The introduction of components with lead-free lenninations, tennination finishes, or circuit boards presents a host of concerns to customers. suppliers, and maintainers of aerospace and military electronic systems such as: 1. Electrical shorting due to tin whiskers; 2. Incompatibility oflead-free processes and parameters (including higher melting points of lead-free alloys) with other materials in the system; and 3. Unknown material properties and incompatibilities that could reduce solder joint re liability.

Lead-Free Experiment in a Space Environment

This Technical Memorandum addresses the Lead-Free Technology Experiment in Space Environment that flew as part of the seventh Materials International Space Station Experiment outside the International Space Station for approximately 18 months. Its intent was to provide data on the performance of lead-free electronics in an actual space environment. Its postflight condition is compared to the preflight condition as well as to the condition of an identical package operating in parallel in the laboratory. Some tin whisker growth was seen on a flight board but the whiskers were few and short. There were no solder joint failures, no tin pest formation, and no significant intermetallic compound formation or growth on either the flight or ground units.

Lead-Free Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 Layered Double Perovskite Nanocrystals

Concerns about the toxicity of lead-based perovskites have aroused great interest for the development of alternative lead-free perovskite-type materials. Recently, theoretical calculations predict that Pb 2+ cations can be substituted by a combination of Cu 2+ and Sb 3+ cations to form a vacancy-ordered layered double perovskite structure with superior optoelectronic properties. However, accessibilities to this class of perovskite-type materials remain inadequate, hindering their practical implementations in various applications. Here, we report the first colloidal synthesis of Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 perovskite-type nanocrystals (NCs). The resulting NCs exhibit a layered double perovskite structure with ordered vacancies and a direct bandgap of 1.79 eV. A composition-structure-property relationship has been established by investigating a series of Cs 4 Cu x Ag 2-2x Sb 2 Cl 12 perovskite-type NCs (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). The composition-induced crystal structure transformation, thus the electronic bandgap evolution has been explored by experimental observations and further confirmed by theoretical calculations. Taking advantages of both the unique electronic structure and solution processability, we demonstrate that the Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 NCs can be solution-processed as high-speed photodetectors with ultrafast photo-response and narrow bandwidth. We anticipate that our study will prompt future research to design and fabricate novel and high-performance lead-free perovskite-type NCs for a range of applications.

Strain-induced lead-free morphotropic phase boundary

Enhanced susceptibilities in ferroelectrics often arise near phase boundaries between competing ground states. While chemically-induced phase boundaries have enabled ultrahigh electrical and electromechanical responses in lead-based ferroelectrics, precise chemical tuning in lead-free alternatives, such as (K,Na)NbO 3 thin films, remains challenging due to the high volatility of alkali metals. Here, we demonstrate strain-induced morphotropic phase boundary-like polymorphic nanodomain structures in chemically simple, lead-free, epitaxial NaNbO 3 thin films. Combining ab initio simulations, thin-film epitaxy, scanning probe microscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and electron ptychography, we reveal a labyrinthine structure comprising coexisting monoclinic and bridging triclinic phases near a strain-induced phase boundary. The coexistence of energetically competing phases facilitates field-driven polarization rotation and phase transitions, giving rise to a multi-state polarization switching pathway and large enhancements in dielectric susceptibility and tunability across a broad frequency range. Our results open new possibilities for engineering lead-free thin films with enhanced functionalities for next-generation applications.

Origin of ultralow phonon transport and strong anharmonicity in lead-free halide perovskites

All-inorganic lead-free halide double perovskites offer a promising avenue toward non-toxic, stable optoelectronic materials, properties that are missing in their prominent lead-containing counterparts. Their large thermopowers and high carrier mobilities also make them promising for thermoelectric applications. Here, in this work, we present a first-principles study of the lattice vibrations and thermal transport behaviors of Cs 2 SnI 6 and γ-CsSnI 3 , two prototypical compounds in this materials class. We show that conventional static zero temperature density functional theory (DFT) calculations severely underestimate the lattice thermal conductivities (κ l ) of these compounds, indicating the importance of dynamical effects. By calculating anharmonic renormalized phonon dispersions, we show that some optic phonons significantly harden with increasing temperature (T), which reduces the scattering of heat carrying phonons and enhances calculated κ l values when compared with standard zero temperature DFT. Furthermore, we demonstrate that coherence contributions to κ l , arising from wave like phonon tunneling, are important in both compounds. Overall, calculated κ l with temperature-dependent interatomic force constants, built from particle and coherence contributions, are in good agreement with available measured data, for both magnitude and temperature dependence. Large anharmonicity combined with low phonon group velocities yield ultralow values, with room temperature values of 0.26 W/m-K and 0.72 W/m-K predicted for Cs 2 SnI 6 and γ-CsSnI 3 , respectively. We further show that the lattice dynamics of these compounds are highly anharmonic, largely mediated by rotation of the SnI6 octahedra and localized modes originating from Cs rattling motion. These thermal characteristics combined with their previously computed excellent electronic properties make these perovskites promising candidates for optoelectronic and room temperature thermoelectric applications.

Mechanical Properties and Microstructure Investigation of Lead Free Solder

While the electronics industry appears to be focusing on Sn-Ag-Cu as the alloy of choice for lead free electronics assembly, ,the exact composition varies by geographic region, supplier and user. Add to that dissolved copper and silver from the printed circuit board traces and surface finish, and there can be significant variation in the final solder joint composition. A systematic study of the mechanical and microstructural properties of Sn-Ag-Cu alloys with Ag varying from 2wt% to 4wt% and Cu varying from 0.5wt% to lSwt%, was undertaken in this research study. Different sample preparation techniques (water quenched, oil quenched and water quenched followed by reflow) were explored and the resulting microstructure compared to that of a typical reflowed lead free chip scale package (CSP) solder joint. Tensile properties (modulus, 0.2% yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength) and creep behavior of selected alloy compositions (Sn-4Ag-1 X u , Sn-4Ag-OSCu, Sn- 2Ag-1 X u , Sn-2Ag-OSCu, Sn-3.5Ag-O.SCu) were determined for three conditions: as- cast; aged for 100 hours at 125OC; and aged for 250 hours at 125OC. There was no significant difference in Young's Modulus as a function of alloy composition. After an initial decrease in modulus after 100 hours at 125"C, there was an insignificant change with further aging. The distribution of 0.2% strain yield stress and ultimate tensile strength as a function of alloy composition was more significant and decreased with aging time and temperature. The microstructures of these alloys were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy (LM and SEM) respectively and SEM based energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Fracture surface and cross-section analysis were performed on the specimens after creep testing. The creep testing results and the effect of high temperature aging on mechanical properties is presented for the oil quenched samples. In general the microstructure of oil quenched specimen exhibited a eutectic region of Sn with moderately dispersed Ag3Sn intermetallic, surrounded by a dendritic Sn-rich phase. The SEM images of the fracture surface indicated the presence of a tough shear surface at the initial cavity break area and a break line in the middle of specimen along the failure direction. A hyperbolic-sine creep model was adopted and used to fit the creep experiment data. The effect on the mechanical properties by adding the quaternary element bismuth to the Sn-3.5Ag-0.8Cu alloy was measured and compared with the mechanical properties of the ternary alloys. The results of this research study provide necessary data for the modeling of solder joint reliability for a range of Sn-Ag-Cu compositions and a baseline for evaluating the effects of subsequent quaternary additions.

High and temperature-insensitive piezoelectric performance in the lead-free Sm-doped BiFeO 3 –BaTiO 3 ceramics with high Curie temperature

Large sensor piezoelectric constant (d 33 = 334 pC/N) and superior actuator piezoelectric constant (d 33 * = 552 pm/V) as well as a high Curie temperature (T C = 454 °C) were obtained simultaneously in the lead-free 0.67Bi 1.03 FeO 3 -0.33Ba 1-x Sm x TiO 3 ceramics. Such an excellent and temperature-insensitive piezoelectric performance with only 10% temperature variation of piezoelectric strain at the range of 25–125 °C is highly desirable for real applications. The structural origin of the enhanced piezoelectric performance is mainly attributed to the morphotropic phase boundary and the highest known tetragonality (c T /a T = 1.02) in such materials. Transmission electron microscopy and electro-mechanical phenomenological theory demonstrate that the superior d 33 and d 33 * are associated with the hybrids nanodomains (60–90 nm) and flattened thermodynamic energy profile owing to the local structure heterogeneity. Furthermore, these results are superior as the piezoelectric properties are temperature-independent and the material has large d 33 *, and high TC compared to other lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.

Impact of processing conditions on the film formation of lead-free halide double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6

Lead-free halide double perovskites with enhanced stability have gained attention as a promising environmentally friendly alternative to lead-based halide perovskites. Amongst different halide double perovskites, Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 has shown attractive optoelectronic properties and stability, making it a promising candidate for stable high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. Motivated by a data mining effort, we present here in this study the effects of different processing strategies on the microstructure and thin-film formation dynamics of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 . We apply some of the most successfully used solvent engineering approaches from the halide perovskite research to halide double perovskites, namely antisolvent- and additive-assisted synthesis. Using in situ spectroscopy and diffraction, the film formation of Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 is investigated during spin coating, and the subsequent post-deposition thermal annealing. Dropping antisolvents during spin coating induces immediate supersaturation and crystallization of the wet film, whereas the time of dropping the antisolvent has implications on the film formation dynamics and the final microstructure. For additive (HBr)-assisted synthesis, we show how the addition of HBr affects colloid formation in solution and thus influences the crystallization pathway during thin-film processing. Finally, HBr additive simplifies synthesis in that it doesn't require solution and substrate preheating to obtain pinhole-free films even with higher thickness.

Design of High-Performance Lead-Free Quaternary Antiperovskites for Photovoltaics via Ion Type Inversion and Anion Ordering

The emergence of halide double perovskites significantly increases the compositional space for lead-free and air-stable photovoltaic absorbers compared to halide perovskites. Nevertheless, most halide double perovskites exhibit oversized band gaps (>1.9 eV) or dipole-forbidden optical transition, which are unfavorable for efficient single-junction solar cell applications. The current device performance of halide double perovskite is still inferior to that of lead-based halide perovskites, such as CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ). Here, by ion type inversion and anion ordering on perovskite lattice sites, two new classes of pnictogen-based quaternary antiperovskites with the formula of X 6 B 2 AA' and X 6 BB'A 2 are designed. Phase stability and tunable band gaps in these quaternary antiperovskites are demonstrated based on first-principles calculations. Further photovoltaic-functionality-directed screening of these materials leads to the discovery of 5 stable compounds (Ca 6 N 2 AsSb, Ca 6 N 2 PSb, Sr 6 N 2 AsSb, Sr 6 N 2 PSb, and Ca 6 NPSb 2 ) with suitable direct band gaps, small carrier effective masses and low exciton binding energies, and dipole-allowed strong optical absorption, which are favorable properties for a photovoltaic absorber material. The calculated theoretical maximum solar cell efficiencies based on these five compounds are all larger than 29%, comparable to or even higher than that of the MAPbI 3 based solar cell. Finally, our work reveals the huge potential of quaternary antiperovskites in the optoelectronic field and provides a new strategy to design lead-free and air-stable perovskite-based photovoltaic absorber materials.

Reliability of Sn/Pb and Lead-Free (SnAgCu) Solders of Surface Mounted Miniaturized Passive Components for Extreme Temperature (-185 C to +125 C) Space Missions

Surface mount electronic package test boards have been assembled using tin/lead (Sn/Pb) and lead-free (Pb-free or SnAgCu or SAC305) solders. The soldered surface mount packages include ball grid arrays (BGA), flat packs, various sizes of passive chip components, etc. They have been optically inspected after assembly and subsequently subjected to extreme temperature thermal cycling to assess their reliability or future deep space, long-term, extreme temperature environmental missions. In this study, the employed temperature range (-185oC to +125oC) covers military specifications (-55oC to +100oC), extreme old Martian (-120oC to +115oC), asteroid Nereus (-180oC to +25oC) and JUNO (-150oC to +120oC) environments. The boards were inspected at room temperature and at various intervals as a function of extreme temperature thermal cycling and bake duration. Electrical resistance measurements made at room temperature are reported and the tests to date have shown some change in resistance as a function of extreme temperature thermal cycling and some showed increase in resistance. However, the change in interconnect resistance becomes more noticeable with increasing number of thermal cycles. Further research work will be carried out to understand the reliability of packages under extreme temperature applications (-185oC to +125oC) via continuously monitoring the daisy chain resistance for BGA, Flat-packs, lead less chip packages, etc. This paper will describe the experimental reliability results of miniaturized passive components (01005, 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, and 1206) assembled using surface mounting processes with tin-lead and lead-free solder alloys under extreme temperature environments.

Giant energy-storage density with ultrahigh efficiency in lead-free relaxors via high-entropy design

Next-generation advanced high/pulsed power capacitors rely heavily on dielectric ceramics with high energy storage performance. However, thus far, the huge challenge of realizing ultrahigh recoverable energy storage density (W rec ) accompanied by ultrahigh efficiency (η) still existed and has become a key bottleneck restricting the development of dielectric materials in cutting-edge energy storage applications. Here, we propose a high-entropy strategy to design “local polymorphic distortion” including rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal-cubic multiphase nanoclusters and random oxygen octahedral tilt, resulting in ultrasmall polar nanoregions, an enhanced breakdown electric field, and delayed polarization saturation. A giant W rec ~10.06 Jcm –3 is realized in lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics, especially with an ultrahigh η ~90.8%, showing breakthrough progress in the comprehensive energy storage performance for lead-free bulk ceramics. This work opens up an effective avenue to design dielectric materials with ultrahigh comprehensive energy storage performance to meet the demanding requirements of advanced energy storage applications.

Revisiting Structural and Electromechanical Properties of the Lead-free (K,Na)NbO 3 High-Piezoelectric Material

Having lead-free systems with excellent piezoelectric responses is crucial to the development of environmentally friendly electromechanical applications. In this work, we build an effective Hamiltonian model to explore the promising (K x Na 1–x )NbO 3 system, whose rich phase diagram near x = 50% remains poorly understood meanwhile exhibiting a colossal effective piezoelectric response. Thanks to the numerical implementation of this effective Hamiltonian scheme into a Monte Carlo Metropolis algorithm, we reveal striking features. First, a long-period state can be the ground state at low temperatures for some concentrations while only a short-period conventional polar ground state exists for larger x. Second, the electric field-driven transformation, via a first-order transition, of this long-period state into a short-period polar state creates large electromechanical strains (on the order of the percent) and is likely the origin of the colossal piezoelectric response reported in KNN, for which we evaluate an effective piezoelectric coefficient of several thousands of pC/N.

Hierarchical domain structures associated with oxygen octahedra tilting patterns in lead-free (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 )TiO 3

Hierarchical domain structures associated with oxygen octahedra tilting patterns were observed in lead-free (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 )TiO 3 ceramics using aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Three types of domains are induced by distinct mechanisms: the 'orientation-domain' is induced at micrometer scale formed by different tilting orientations of the oxygen octahedra, the 'meso-chemical-domain' occurs at a few tens of nanometer scale by chemical composition variation on the A-site in the ABO 3 perovskite structure, and the 'nano-cluster-region' runs across several unit-cells with apparent A-site cation segregation with oxygen vacancies clustering around Na cations. Based on HRTEM amplitude contrast imaging (ACI), the correlation between the oxygen octahedral tilting pattern and compositional non-stoichiometry was established. The role of the hierarchical domain structure associated with the tilting patterns of the oxygen octahedra on the ferroelectric behavior of (Bi 1/2 Na 1/2 )TiO 3 is also discussed.
