Two-photon X-ray ghost microscope

This article presents a non-classical imaging mechanism that produces a diffraction-limited and magnified ghost image of the internal structure of an object through the measurement of intensity fluctuation correlation formed by two-photon interference. In principle, the lensless X-ray ghost imaging mechanism may achieve a spatial resolution determined by the wavelength and the angular diameter of the X-ray source, ∼ λ /Δ θ s , with possible reduction caused by additional optics. In addition, it has the ability to image select “slices” deep within an object, which can be used for constructing 3D view of its internal structure.

Ptychographic reconstructions performed in real time and offline have equivalent quality

Abstract Ptychography is a burgeoning imaging technique that enables high-resolution, lensless reconstruction of complex samples by analysing overlapping diffraction patterns, making it invaluable in fields like materials science, biology, and nanotechnology. Real-time ptychographic reconstructions are gaining interest in the scientific community as they provide immediate feedback. Yet their potential to replace offline reconstructions remains uncertain, in part due to questions about the quality of the resulting images. This study quantitatively compares real-time and offline reconstructions at different overlap conditions. Offline reconstructions, using all diffraction patterns at once, and real-time reconstructions, where new frames are added to the reconstructions in small chunks as the diffraction patterns are recorded, were indistinguishable and identical in reconstruction quality. These results hold consistently across all tested overlap ratios. This study represents the first quantitative analysis of real-time ptychographic reconstruction using a growing dataset, demonstrating the potential for real-time reconstructions to replace or at least complement offline reconstructions.

Scintillation event imaging with a single photon avalanche diode camera

Position and time measurements of scintillation events encode information about the radiation source. Single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays offer multiple-megapixel spatial resolution and tens of picoseconds temporal resolution for detecting single photons. Current lensless designs for measuring scintillation events use sensors that are lower in spatial resolution. Camera-based designs use sensors that are lower in temporal resolution or readout rate and cannot image individual interactions. Here we propose to image scintillation events in a thick, monolithic scintillator using a high-resolution SPAD camera. We demonstrate that a commercial SPAD camera is able to gather sufficient signal to image individual scintillation events and observe 3D shifts in their spatial distribution. Simulations show that a SPAD camera can localize individual scintillation events in 3D. We report direct imaging of gamma-ray interactions in a scintillator with a SPAD camera. The proposed design may allow to measure complex signatures of individual particles interacting in the scintillator.

Optical processing for landmark identification

A study of optical pattern recognition techniques, available components and airborne optical systems for use in landmark identification was conducted. A data base of imagery exhibiting multisensor, seasonal, snow and fog cover, exposure, and other differences was assembled. These were successfully processed in a scaling optical correlator using weighted matched spatial filter synthesis. Distinctive data classes were defined and a description of the data (with considerable input information and content information) emerged from this study. It has considerable merit with regard to the preprocessing needed and the image difference categories advanced. A optical pattern recognition airborne applications was developed, assembled and demontrated. It employed a laser diode light source and holographic optical elements in a new lensless matched spatial filter architecture with greatly reduced size and weight, as well as component positioning toleranced.

Lensless X-Ray Nanoimaging: Revolutions and opportunities

Lensless x-ray nanoimaging is providing 3D views of a wide range of materials with a spatial resolution better than 20 nanometers. These advances are enabled in part by dramatic gains in coherent x-ray flux, but they also rely on advances in signal processing to obtain images from coherent diffraction data. Here, we outline the various imaging approaches, the associated reconstruction methods, and highlight opportunities for future advances.
