Gluon double-spin asymmetry in the longitudinally polarized p + p collisions

We derive the first-ever small-x expression for the inclusive gluon production cross section in the central rapidity region of the longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions. The cross section depends on the polarizations of both protons, therefore comprising the numerator of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ALL for the produced gluons. The cross section is calculated in the shock wave formalism and is expressed in terms of the polarized dipole scattering amplitudes on the projectile and target protons. We show that the small-x evolution corrections are included into our cross section expression if one evolves these polarized dipole amplitudes using the double-logarithmic helicity evolution derived in [1–4]. Our calculation is performed for the gluon sector only, with the quark contribution left for future work. When that work is complete, the resulting formula will be applicable to longitudinally polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions, as well as to polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on a proton or a nucleus. Our results should allow one to extend the small-x helicity phenomenology analysis of [5] to the jet/hadron production data reported for the longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC and to polarized SIDIS measurements at central rapidities to be performed at the EIC.

Parametric longitudinal coupling between a high-impedance superconducting resonator and a semiconductor quantum dot singlet-triplet spin qubit

Coupling qubits to a superconducting resonator provides a mechanism to enable long-distance entangling operations in a quantum computer based on spins in semiconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a controllable spin-photon coupling based on a longitudinal interaction between a spin qubit and a resonator. We show that coupling a singlet-triplet qubit to a high-impedance superconducting resonator can produce the desired longitudinal coupling when the qubit is driven near the resonator’s frequency. We measure the energy splitting of the qubit as a function of the drive amplitude and frequency of a microwave signal applied near the resonator antinode, revealing pronounced effects close to the resonator frequency due to longitudinal coupling. By tuning the amplitude of the drive, we reach a regime with longitudinal coupling exceeding 1 MHz. This mechanism for qubit-resonator coupling represents a stepping stone towards producing high-fidelity two-qubit gates mediated by a superconducting resonator.

Longitudinal Trajectories of Memory Performance in Patients with Early-Stage Breast Cancer

Background. While breast cancer and its treatments may affect cognition, the longitudinal trajectories of cognition among those receiving differing cancer treatment types remain poorly understood. Prior research suggests hippocampal-prefrontal cortex network integrity may influence cognition, although how this network predicts performance over time remains unclear. Methods. We conducted a prospective trial including 69 patients with early-stage breast cancer receiving adjuvant therapy and 12 controls. Longitudinal cognitive testing was conducted at four visits: pretreatment-baseline, 6-7 months, 14-15 months, and 23-24 months. Cognitive composite scores of episodic memory, executive functioning, and processing speed were assessed at each timepoint. Baseline structural MRI was obtained in a subset of these participants, and hippocampal and prefrontal cortex regional volumes were extracted. Results. Longitudinal linear mixed modeling revealed significant group by time interactions on memory performance, controlling for age and education. Post hoc analyses revealed this effect was driven by patients treated with chemotherapy or chemotherapy plus hormone therapy, who demonstrated the least improvement in memory scores over time. Treatment group did not significantly influence the relationship between time and processing speed or executive functioning. Neither pretreatment hippocampal nor prefrontal volume differed between groups, and there were no significant group by time by baseline regional volume effects on cognition. Conclusion. Patients with early-stage breast cancer treated with chemotherapy or chemotherapy plus hormone therapy benefit less from practice effects seen in healthy controls on memory tests. Loss of longitudinal practice effect may be a new and clinically relevant measure for capturing patients’ experience of cognitive difficulties after treatment.

LINAC Longitudinal Simulation and Measurement of Output Energy

The Fermilab Linac, a pivotal and historic accelerator at Fermilab, is crucial to the laboratory's operations, supplying a 400 MeV beam to various acceleration facilities. Due to daily variations in the Linac's output energy, precise monitoring and machine tuning are important to ensure the exiting energy meets the Booster's acceptance criteria. To address this, Beam Position Monitors (BPMs) are employed to assess and adjust the beam's energy, providing essential data on both the transverse position and longitudinal phase of the beam. We also aim to regulate the longitudinal phase profile to match our simulation predictions. By utilizing a Python-based simulation and beam data from three BPMs, we can determine the optimal phasing correction required for the final RF stage to achieve the desired energy. Currently, the calculations of longitudinal phase profile are based on simulations, so additional research is needed to verify if the predicted longitudinal phase distribution aligns with actual real-world data.

Longitudinal Twiss parameters for tilted phase space ellipses

The longitudinal emittance ϵ s is usually defined under the implicit assumption that the longitudinal phase space distribution is erect, an assumption that is significantly incorrect near transition. This note generalizes the definition of e, to include tilted distributions, by introducing longitudinal Twiss functions β a , α s and γ s that are analogous to transverse Twiss functions. The evolution of these longitudinal parameters through RHIC transition is presented, for a typical set of simulation data.

The Association of Age-Related and Off-Target Retention with Longitudinal Quantification of [ 18 F]MK6240 Tau PET in Target Regions

6-(fluoro- 18 F)-3-(1H-pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridin-1-yl)isoquinolin-5-amine ([ 18 F]MK6240) tau PET tracer quantifies the brain tau neurofibrillary tangle load in Alzheimer disease. The aims of our study were to test the stability of common reference region estimates in the cerebellum over time and across diagnoses and evaluate the effects of age-related and off-target retention on the longitudinal quantification of [ 18 F]MK6240 in target regions. Methods: We assessed reference, target, age-related, and off-target regions in 125 individuals across the aging and Alzheimer disease spectrum with longitudinal [ 18 F]MK6240 SUVs and SUV ratios (SUVRs) (mean ± SD, 2.25 ± 0.40 y of follow-up). We obtained SUVR from meninges, exhibiting frequent off-target retention with [ 18 F]MK6240. Additionally, we compared tracer uptake between 37 cognitively unimpaired young (CUY) (mean age, 23.41 ± 3.33 y) and 27 cognitively unimpaired older (CU) adults (amyloid-β–negative and tau-negative, 58.50 ± 9.01 y) to identify possible nonvisually apparent, age-related signal. Two-tailed t testing and Pearson correlation testing were used to determine the difference between groups and associations between changes in region uptake, respectively. Results: Inferior cerebellar gray matter SUV did not differ on the basis of diagnosis and amyloid-β status, cross-sectionally and over time. [ 18 F]MK6240 uptake significantly differed between CUY and CU adults in the putamen or pallidum (affecting ~75% of the region) and in the Braak II region (affecting ~35%). Changes in meningeal and putamen or pallidum SUVRs did not significantly differ from zero, nor did they vary across diagnostic groups. We did not observe significant correlations between longitudinal changes in age-related or meningeal off-target retention and changes in target regions, whereas changes in all target regions were strongly correlated. Conclusion: Inferior cerebellar gray matter was similar across diagnostic groups cross-sectionally and stable over time and thus was deemed a suitable reference region for quantification. Despite not being visually perceptible, [ 18 F]MK6240 has age-related retention in subcortical regions, at a much lower magnitude but topographically colocalized with significant off-target signal of the first-generation tau tracers. The lack of correlation between changes in age-related or meningeal and target retention suggests little influence of possible off-target signals on longitudinal tracer quantification. Nevertheless, the age-related retention in the Braak II region needs to be further investigated. Future postmortem studies should elucidate the source of the newly reported age-related [ 18 F]MK6240 signal, and in vivo studies should further explore its impact on tracer quantification.

Transverse and longitudinal tensile properties at 760 C of several oxide dispersion strengthened nickel-base alloys

The transverse and longitudinal tensile properties of the oxide dispersion strengthened nickel-base alloys were determined at 760 C. The alloys with small amounts of gamma prime have strength levels suitable for turbine vane applications, while other highly alloyed, gamma prime strengthened superalloys have strengths typical of turbine blade materials. These alloys were produced by mechanical alloying and extrusion and the turbine blade alloys were also directionally recrystallized. Resultant grain aspect ratios varied from 1:1 to over 20:1. Longitudinal tensile strengths ranged from 285 to 1175 MPa, while longitudinal elongations were in excess of 4 percent for all alloys. Transverse tensile strengths were comparable to longitudinal strengths, but transverse ductility levels were generally less than 2 percent elongation. Tensile and yield strengths increased with increasing strain rate over the range 0.001 to 0.05 per second. Ductility in both orientations was not strain rate sensitive but could be related to grain size and grain aspect ratio.

Origin of longitudinal grooving in Tiu Vallis, Mars - Isolation of responsible fluid-types

Fluid instability analysis developed for the growth or decay of large, longitudinal roller vortex perturbations imposed at the base of fluids of exponentially stratified viscosities is presented. The origin of longitudinal grooving and fluting in a region of converging flow in Tiu Vallis, Mars, is analyzed, and the propensity of fluids, such as water, mudflow/debris flow, and lava, to develop longitudinal roll patterns as part of their flow field is tested. It is found that the grooving pattern in Tiu Vallis was probably formed by vortex motion in a mudflow or debris-laden slurry, but exact representation of sediment/debris concentration or sediment transport machanism is not yet possible. It is concluded that longitudinal vortex motion modelled in this analysis can develop in water, lava, or ice, but that the specific flow characteristics of these models which include the vortex motion are unreasonable for flow in Tiu Vallis.

Longitudinal variability of methane and ammonia bands on Jupiter

Results of a quantitative study of the longitudinal variations of methane and ammonia absorption on Jupiter are presented. A total of 78 high signal-to-noise ratio photoelectric spectra in the range 6000 to 6600 A were obtained on two consecutive nights, with complete longitudinal equatorial coverage each night through 9-min exposures covering a total of over 9 h. Analysis of the equivalent widths of the CH4 6190 A and NH3 6450 A absorption bands by means of a blind, automated, self-consistent method of continuum determination reveals large equivalent widths in both bands near longitudes of 35 and 340 deg and small equivalent widths near 150 deg, with a high degree of correlation between the equivalent widths of the bands. Continuum molecular absorption is found to be slightly negatively correlated with band equivalent widths. Radiative transfer calculations based on the model of Sato and Hansen (1979) using a doubling and adding technique indicate that the observed longitudinal variables of equivalent widths and continuum reflectivity are the results of longitudinal variations in ammonia cloud altitude.

Propagation of nonlinear, radiatively damped longitudinal waves along magnetic flux tubes in the solar atmosphere

For solar magnetic flux tubes three types of waves are compared: longitudinal MHD tube waves, acoustic tube waves propagating in the same tube geometry but with rigid walls and ordinary acoustic waves in plane geometry. It is found that the effect of the distensibility of the tube is small and that longitudinal waves are essentially acoustic tube waves. Due to the tube geometry there is considerable difference between longitudinal waves or acoustic tube waves and ordinary acoustic waves. Longitudinal waves as well as acoustic tube waves show a smaller amplitude growth, larger shock formation heights, smaller mean chromospheric temperature but a steeper dependence of the temperature gradient on wave period.

Longitudinal peculiarities of meridional circulation in lower thermosphere and mesosphere

Average monthly longitudinal profiles of geostrophic wind in winter are presented. Positive values correspond to meridional movements from north to south. It is concluded that the normal longitudinal meridional circulation is characterized by the presence of sectors where meridional flows do not change their direction in the course of time comparable with synoptic periods. The longitudinal distribution of meridional wind in middle latitudes taken from the analysis results of radiometeor and ionospheric stations observational data obtained in 1976 to 1980 are presented. Meridional winds have a longitudinal variability that is equivalent to both the warm and cold half years.

Flight Determination of the Static Longitudinal Stability Boundaries of the Bell X-5 Research Airplane with 59 Deg Sweepback

During the flight program on the Bell X-5 airplane with 59 deg sweepback to determine the practical Mach number and normal-force coefficient limits of this configuration, a reduction in static longitudinal stability was encountered in maneuvering flight. A determination of the boundary for reduction of longitudinal stability extending to a Mach number of 0.98 is presented in this paper. A reduction of static longitudinal stability existed for all elevator and all stabilizer-executed maneuvers. The reduction of stability existed for maneuvers executed with elevator near a normal-force coefficient of 0.6 for a Mach number range of about 0.31 to 0.76. Above a Mach number of 0.76 the normal-force coefficient for reduction of stability gradually decreased to a value of 0.2 at a Mach number of 0.98. For stabilizer-executed maneuvers the stability boundary was the same as for elevator maneuvers up to a Mach number of 0.88. Above this Mach number the reduction of stability occurred at slightly higher normal-force coefficients decreasing from about 0.51 at a Mach number of 0.92 to a value of 0.311 at a Mach number of 0.97. The airplane has been flown to a Mach number of 1.04 at a normal-force coefficient of about 0.15 without encountering any reduction of stability. The pilot did not consider the reduction of stability to be dangerous at altitudes above 30,000 feet; however, precise flight was impossible. At angles of attack above that at which the reduction of longitudinal stability occurred, directional instability and aileron control overbalance were encountered.

Charts relating the compressive buckling stress of longitudinally supported plates to the effective deflectional and rotational stiffness of the supports

A stability analysis is made of a long flat rectangular plate subjected to a uniform longitudinal compressive stress and supported along its longitudinal edges and along one or more longitudinal lines by elastic line supports. The elastic supports possess deflectional and rotational stiffness. Such configuration is an idealization of the compression cover skin and internal structure of a wing and tail surfaces. The results of the analysis are presented in the form of charts in which the buckling-stress coefficient is plotted against the buckle length of the plate for a wide range of support stiffnesses. The charts make possible the determination of the compressive buckling stress of plates supported by members whose stiffness may or may not be defined by elementary beam bending and twisting theory but yet whose effective restraint is amenable to evaluation. The deflectional and rotational stiffness provided by longitudinal stiffeners and full-depth webs is discussed and numerical examples are given to illustrate the application of the charts to the design of wing structures.

High angle of attack flying qualities criteria for longitudinal rate command systems

This study was designed to investigate flying qualities requirements of alternate pitch command systems for fighter aircraft at high angle of attack. Flying qualities design guidelines have already been developed for angle of attack command systems at 30, 45, and 60 degrees angle of attack, so this research fills a similar need for rate command systems. Flying qualities tasks that require post-stall maneuvering were tested during piloted simulations in the McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Manned Air Combat Simulation facility. A generic fighter aircraft model was used to test angle of attack rate and pitch rate command systems for longitudinal gross acquisition and tracking tasks at high angle of attack. A wide range of longitudinal dynamic variations were tested at 30, 45, and 60 degrees angle of attack. Pilot comments, Cooper-Harper ratings, and pilot induced oscillation ratings were taken from five pilots from NASA, USN, CAF, and McDonnell Douglas Aerospace. This data was used to form longitudinal design guidelines for rate command systems at high angle of attack. These criteria provide control law design guidance for fighter aircraft at high angle of attack, low speed flight conditions. Additional time history analyses were conducted using the longitudinal gross acquisition data to look at potential agility measures of merit and correlate agility usage to flying qualities boundaries. This paper presents an overview of this research.

Longitudinal dunes on Mars: Relation to current wind regimes

Longitudinal dunes are extremely rare on Mars, but constitute a substantial fraction of terrestrial desert dunes. We report finding isolated examples of longitudinal dunes on Mars and relate their occurence to expected sand transport regimes. Terrestrial longitudinal dunes form in bimodal and multimodal transport regimes. General circulation models and streak data indicate that bimodal and multimodal transport of sand should be very rare on Mars. Thus the dearth of longitudinal dunes on Mars is consistant with their apparent formation conditions on Earth.

Residual Strength Pressure Tests and Nonlinear Analyses of Stringer-and Frame-Stiffened Aluminum Fuselage Panels with Longitudinal Cracks

The results of residual strength pressure tests and nonlinear analyses of stringer- and frame-stiffened aluminum fuselage panels with longitudinal cracks are presented. Two types of damage are considered: a longitudinal crack located midway between stringers, and a longitudinal crack adjacent to a stringer and along a row of fasteners in a lap joint that has multiple-site damage (MSD). In both cases, the longitudinal crack is centered on a severed frame. The panels are subjected to internal pressure plus axial tension loads. The axial tension loads are equivalent to a bulkhead pressure load. Nonlinear elastic-plastic residual strength analyses of the fuselage panels are conducted using a finite element program and the crack-tip-opening-angle (CTOA) fracture criterion. Predicted crack growth and residual strength results from nonlinear analyses of the stiffened fuselage panels are compared with experimental measurements and observations. Both the test and analysis results indicate that the presence of MSD affects crack growth stability and reduces the residual strength of stiffened fuselage shells with long cracks.
