Chiral limit and origin of topological flat bands in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers

Abstract The observation of zero field fractional quantum Hall analogs in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) asks for a deeper understanding of what mechanisms lead to topological flat bands in two-dimensional heterostructures, and what makes TMDs an excellent platform for topologically ordered phases, surpassing twisted bilayer graphene. To this aim, we explore the chiral limits of massive Dirac theories applicable toC 3 -symmetric moiré materials, and show their relevance for both bilayer graphene and TMD homobilayers. In the latter, the Berry curvature of valence bands leads to relativistic corrections of the moiré potential that promote band flattening, and permit a limit with exactly flat bands with nonzero Chern number. The relativistic corrections enter as alayer-orbit coupling, analogous to spin-orbit coupling for relativistic Dirac fermions, which we show is non-negligible on the moiré scale. The Berry curvature of the TMD monolayers therefore plays an essential role in the flattening of moiré Chern bands in these heterostructures.

Enhanced negative energy with a massless Dirac field

Motivated by traversable wormhole constructions that require large amounts of negative energy, we explore constraints on the amount of negative energy that can be carried by a free Dirac field in a slab-shaped region between two parallel spatial planes. Specifically, we ask what is the minimum possible uniform energy density that can exist at some time, considering all possible states and all possibilities for the physics outside the slab. The vacuum state where we identify the two sides of the slab with antiperiodic boundary conditions gives one possible state with uniform negative energy, but we argue that states with more negative energy exist above 1+1 dimensions. Technically, we reduce the problem to studying a massive Dirac field on an interval in 1+1 dimensions and numerically search for states with uniform energy density in a lattice regulated model. We succeed in finding states with enhanced negative energy (relative to the antiperiodic vacuum) which also appear to have a sensible continuum limit. Our results for the mass-dependence of the minimum uniform energy density in 1+1 dimensions suggest that for a 3+1 dimensional massless Dirac fermion, it is possible to have states with arbitrarily large uniform negative energy density in an arbitrarily wide slab.

Cosmological constraints on light but massive relics

Many scenarios of physics beyond the standard model predict new light, weakly coupled degrees of freedom, populated in the early universe and remaining as cosmic relics today. Due to their high abundances, these relics can significantly affect the evolution of the universe. For instance, massless relics produce a shift ΔN eff to the cosmic expectation of the effective number of active neutrinos. Massive relics, on the other hand, additionally become part of the cosmological dark matter in the later universe, though their light nature allows them to freely stream out of potential wells. This produces novel signatures in the large-scale structure (LSS) of the universe, suppressing matter fluctuations at small scales. Here, we present the first general search for such light (but massive) relics (LiMRs) with cosmic microwave background (CMB) and LSS data, scanning the 2D parameter space of their masses m X and temperatures $T^{(0)}_{X}$ today. In the conservative minimum-temperature ($T^{(0)}_{X}$ = 0.91 K) scenario, we rule out Weyl (and higher-spin) fermions -- such as the gravitino -- with m X ≥ 2.26 eV at 95% C.L., and set analogous limits of m X ≤ 11.2,1.06,1.56 eV for scalar, vector, and Dirac-fermion relics. This is the first search for LiMRs with joint CMB, weak-lensing, and full-shape galaxy data; we demonstrate that weak-lensing data is critical for breaking parameter degeneracies, while full-shape information presents a significant boost in constraining power relative to analyses with only baryon acoustic oscillation parameters. Under the combined strength of these datasets, our constraints are the tightest and most comprehensive to date.

Separability of the Dirac equation in the STU black hole spacetime: Pairwise-equal charge case study

We study the separability of the Dirac equation in the background of four dimensional charged rotating asymptotically flat black hole solution of supergravity and the low energy string theory known as STU black hole. In particular, we analyze in detail the separability conditions in the pairwise equal charge STU black hole space-time. While in the latter case the minimally coupled Dirac equation is not separable, the introduction of a specific torsion term ensures the separability. The source of the torsion is the Kalb-Ramond field, which is an integral part of string theory, but further aspects of its properties and coupling to fermionic fields remain to be studied. To derive the torsion, two different approaches are used in conformally related frames, showing that the torsion is not unique. The correspondingly modified Dirac equations in the Einstein and string frames are shown to be separable. Furthermore, the massless radial and angular wave equations are examined; they show close similarity with corresponding equations for the standard Kerr background. A generalization of the Teukolsky equation for the pairwise equal case is conjectured. We also briefly analyze a technically sophisticated radial equation in the massive case.

Fermions, quantum gravity, and holography in two dimensions

We study a model comprising N flavors of Kähler Dirac fermion propagating on a triangulated two-dimensional disk which is constrained to have a negative average bulk curvature. Dirichlet boundary conditions are chosen for the fermions. Quantum fluctuations of the geometry are included by summing over all possible triangulations consistent with these constraints. We show in the limit N → ∞ that the partition function is dominated by a regular triangulation of two-dimensional hyperbolic space. We use strong coupling expansions and Monte Carlo simulation to show that in this limit boundary correlators of the fermions have a power law dependence on boundary separation as one expects from holography. However, we argue that this behavior breaks down for any finite number of massive fields in the thermodynamic limit and quantum fluctuations of the bulk geometry drive the theory into a nonholographic phase. In contrast, for massless fermions, we find evidence that the boundary is conformal even for finite N . This is consistent with theoretical results in quantum Liouville theory. On the theory of nonhomogeneous nonequilibrium superconductivity in 2D systems with massless fermions

Here we analyze static and nonequilibrium superconducting properties of a 2D relativistic-like model system with local electron-electron interaction, Rashba spin-orbit interaction αR in presence of time-dependent in-plane magnetic field H(t). It is shown that similar to the 2D case with ordinary massive quasiparticle dispersion ε(k)~|k| 2 at large fields, such a system demonstrates a nonhomogeneous superconducting stripe phase with the order parameter Δ(r)=Δ(0)cos(2[μ B B×r]n/$\hbarυ_F$) (B is the magnetic induction, υF is the Fermi velocity, n is the normal to the plane, μ B is the Bohr magneton, and αR$\ll$υF) where the stripes are oriented along the B direction. In the considered system, the inter-stripe period L and the magnitude of the magnetic field B are related by a universal relation BL=$\hbarυ_F$/μ B ≃0.714∙10 -4 Tm. Contrary to the case of massive quasiparticles, where the condition α R ~υ F can be, in principle, satisfied by increasing α R or by charge doping (Fermi velocity decreasing), in a relativistic-like system, where υF is doping-independent and one-two orders of magnitude larger than typical Fermi velocity in the “standard” 2D systems, the stripe phase can be the ground state at a rather low doping level. We also analyzed the nonequilibrium properties of the system with a focus on the melting of the stripe order (when the magnetic field is quenched to a lower value) and stripe dynamics (when the field is rotated by 90° degrees) and found several notable results. In particular, it was shown that the stripe domains melt according to law R~1$\sqrt{t}$ at initial times, while at longer times they shrink exponentially. In the case of the flipped magnetic field, the stripe orientation gradually turns from x- to y-direction, and the intermediate “crossed-stripe” phase takes place during times of order of picoseconds. Such a crossed phase is built of periodic superconducting bubbles that potentially may have applications in modern ultrafast superconducting technologies.
