Nuclear Matrix Elements for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay from Lattice QCD

Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vbb) is a hypothetical nuclear decay that is only possible if the neutrino is a Majorana fermion. Experimental searches for this process with ever-increasing sensitivity have placed strong constraints on the 0vbb half-lives of relevant isotopes. Relating these experimental half-lives to the underlying particle physics -- the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino -- requires understanding of the nuclear matrix elements for the transition. These matrix elements can be computed within a nuclear effective field theory framework, but input from lattice QCD is necessary to constrain low-energy constants relevant for the decay. This talk will discuss calculations of these matrix elements using lattice QCD and the implications for determination of nuclear EFT parameters.

Useful extremum principle for the variational calculation of matrix elements

Variational principles are considered for the approximate evaluation of the diagonal matrix elements of an arbitrary known linear Hermitian operator. A method is derived that is immediately applicable to the variational determination of both the off-diagonal and diagonal matrix elements of normal and modified Green's functions.

First measurement of polarized spin-density matrix elements and differential cross sections dσ/dt in ω photoproduction off the proton for 2.7 < Eγ < 5.2 GeV using CLAS at Jefferson Lab

We report on the differential cross sections dσ/dt, the unpolarized spin-density matrix elements ρ 00 0 , ρ 1 − 1 0 , Re ρ 10 0 , and the first extraction of the polarized elements Im ρ 10 3 , Im ρ 1 − 1 3 for the reaction γp → pω using the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The ω mesons were detected in their dominant charged decay mode, ω → π + π − π 0 , and all t-dependent results are presented in a fine binning for incident photon energies between 2.73 and 5.16 GeV (corresponding to the center-of-mass energy range W ∈ [ 2.45, 3.25 ] GeV). All matrix elements are first measurements for − t > 0.6 GeV2. Moreover, differential cross sections dσ/d(cos Θ c . m . ω ) and the corresponding angle-dependent unpolarized spin-density matrix elements in the Adair frame are presented for the incident photon energy range 1.56–3.80 GeV (corresponding to W ∈ [ 1.95, 2.83 ] GeV). These new ω photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range well beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The comparison with Regge-theory-based model predictions shows that the new data impose more stringent constraints on our understanding of ω photoproduction.

One-loop matrix elements of effective superstring interactions: α' -expanding loop integrands

In the low-energy effective action of string theories, non-abelian gauge interactions and supergravity are augmented by infinite towers of higher-mass-dimension operators. We propose a new method to construct one-loop matrix elements with insertions of operators D 2k F n and D 2k R n in the tree-level effective action of type-I and type-II superstrings. Inspired by ambitwistor string theories, our method is based on forward limits of moduli-space integrals using string tree-level amplitudes with two extra points, expanded in powers of the inverse string tension α'. Similar to one-loop ambitwistor computations, intermediate steps feature non-standard linearized Feynman propagators which eventually recombine to conventional quadratic propagators. With linearized propagators the loop integrand of the matrix elements obey one-loop versions of the monodromy and KLT relations. We express a variety of four- and five-point examples in terms of quadratic propagators and formulate a criterion on the underlying genus-one correlation functions that should make this recombination possible at all orders in α'. The ultraviolet divergences of the one-loop matrix elements are crosschecked against the non-separating degeneration of genus-one integrals in string amplitudes. Conversely, our results can be used as a constructive method to determine degenerations of elliptic multiple zeta values and modular graph forms at arbitrary weight.

Spin–Orbit Matrix Elements for a Combined Spin-Flip and IP/EA approach

We introduce a practical approach for computing the Breit–Pauli spin–orbit matrix elements of multiconfigurational systems with both spin and spatial degeneracies based on our recently developed RAS-nSF-IP/EA method (Houck, S. E.; et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 2278). The spin–orbit matrix elements over all the multiplet components are computed using a single one-particle reduced density matrix as a result of the Wigner–Eckart theorem. A mean field spin–orbit approximation was used to account for the two-electron contributions. Basis set dependence as well as the effect of including additional excitations is presented. The effect of correlating the core and semicore orbitals is also examined. Surprisingly accurate results are obtained for spin–orbit coupling constants, despite the fact that the efficient wave function approximations we research neglect the bulk of dynamical correlation.

Diabatic Hamiltonian matrix elements made simple

With a view to applying the generator coordinate method to large configuration spaces, we propose a simple approximate formula to compute diabatic many-body matrix elements without having to evaluate two-body interaction matrix elements. Here, the method is illustrated with two analytically solvable Hamiltonians based on the harmonic oscillator.

Quark mass difference effects in hadronic Fermi matrix elements from first principles

It was recently estimated that the strong isospin-symmetry breaking (ISB) corrections to the Fermi matrix element in free neutron decay could be of the order 10 –4 , one order of magnitude larger than the naïve estimate based on the Behrends-Sirlin-Ademollo-Gatto theorem. To investigate this claim, we derive a general expression of the leading ISB correction to hadronic Fermi matrix elements, which takes the form of a four-point correlation function in lattice gauge theory and is straightforward to compute from first principles. Our formalism paves the way for the first determination of such correction in the neutron sector with fully-controlled theory uncertainties.

Matrix elements in the coupled-cluster approach - With application to low-lying states in Li

A procedure is suggested for evaluating matrix elements of an operator between wavefunctions in the coupled-cluster form. The use of the exponential ansatz leads to compact exponential expressions also for matrix elements. Algorithms are developed for summing all effects of one-particle clusters and certain chains of two-particle clusters (containing the well-known random-phase approximation as a subset). The treatment of one-particle perturbations in single valence states is investigated in detail. As examples the oscillator strength for the 2s-2p transition in Li as well as the hyperfine structure for the two states are studied and compared to earlier work.

Decay amplitudes to three hadrons from finite-volume matrix elements

We derive relations between finite-volume matrix elements and infinite-volume decay amplitudes, for processes with three spinless, degenerate and either identical or non-identical particles in the final state. This generalizes the Lellouch-Lüscher relation for two-particle decays and provides a strategy for extracting three-hadron decay amplitudes using lattice QCD. Unlike for two particles, even in the simplest approximation, one must solve integral equations to obtain the physical decay amplitude, a consequence of the nontrivial finite-state interactions. We first derive the result in a simplified theory with three identical particles, and then present the generalizations needed to study phenomenologically relevant three-pion decays. The specific processes we discuss are the CP-violating K → 3π weak decay, the isospin-breaking η → 3π QCD transition, and the electromagnetic γ* → 3π amplitudes that enter the calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to muonic g - 2.

Semiclassical matrix elements from periodic orbits

An extension of Gutzwiller's (1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1990) semiclassical theory for chaotic systems that allows a determination of matrix elements in terms of classical periodic orbits. Associated zeta functions are derived. The semiclassical predictions are found to be in good agreement with Fourier transforms of quantum spectra of hydrogen in a magnetic field. Expressions for off-diagonal matrix elements are derived that are extensions of the Bohr correspondence relations for integrable systems.

Nonlocal nucleon matrix elements in the rest frame

Extracting parton structure from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations requires studying the coordinate scale 𝑧 3 dependence of the matrix elements of bilocal operators. The most significant contribution comes from the 𝑧 3 dependence induced by ultraviolet (UV) renormalization of the Wilson line. We demonstrate that the next-to-leading order perturbative calculations of the renormalization factor can describe, to a few percent accuracy, the logarithm of the lattice QCD rest frame matrix elements with separations up to distances of 0.6 fm on multiple lattice spacings. The residual discrepancies can be modeled by a leading effect from the structure of the nucleon.

Long-distance nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay from lattice QCD

Neutrinoless double-beta ( 0 ν β β ) decay is a heretofore unobserved process which, if observed, would imply that neutrinos are Majorana particles. Interpretations of the stringent experimental constraints on 0 ν β β -decay half-lives require calculations of nuclear matrix elements. This work presents the first lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) calculation of the matrix element for 0 ν β β decay in a multinucleon system, specifically the n n → p p e e transition, mediated by a light left-handed Majorana neutrino propagating over nuclear-scale distances. This calculation is performed with quark masses corresponding to a pion mass of m π = 806 MeV at a single lattice spacing and volume. The statistically cleaner Σ − → Σ + e e transition is also computed in order to investigate various systematic uncertainties. The prospects for matching the results of LQCD calculations onto a nuclear effective field theory to determine a leading-order low-energy constant relevant for 0 ν β β decay with a light Majorana neutrino are investigated. This work, therefore, sets the stage for future calculations at physical values of the quark masses that, combined with effective field theory and nuclear many-body studies, will provide controlled theoretical inputs to experimental searches of 0 ν β β decay. Three-nucleon lepton-number-violating potentials in chiral effective field theory and their matrix elements in light nuclei

Here, we derive the three-nucleon neutrinoless double-𝛽 decay potential in a Δ-full chiral effective field theory through next-to-next-to-next-to leading order in Weinberg's power counting. The matrix elements of the resulting operators are computed in light nuclei using variational Monte Carlo with wave functions constructed from the Norfolk family of nuclear interactions. We find that three-nucleon corrections induce a modest quenching of the total nuclear matrix elements. We discuss model dependencies and the potential impact of these corrections on the sensitivity of experimental programs to probe lepton number violating parameters. These results provide a benchmark for many-body methods capable of reaching heavier nuclei of experimental interest.

Nuclear Matrix Elements for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay

Neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is a rare hypothesised process that, if discovered, would establish that the neutrino is Majorana, that is, it is its own antiparticle. Interpretation of experimental results relies on knowledge of nuclear matrix elements, whose large model uncertainty is the limiting factor in comparing measured (bounds on) half-lives to the neutrino mass. Nuclear effective field theory and lattice QCD have the potential to compute these matrix elements with better control over uncertainties, enhancing the discovery potential of next-generation $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiments. This work will survey various lattice QCD double-beta decay calculations and discuss their implications.
