Dispatching Grid-Forming Inverters in Grid-Connected and Islanded Mode: Preprint

This paper explores the dispatch-ability of grid-forming (GFM) inverters in grid-connected and islanded mode. Grid-forming (GFM) inverters usually use droop control to automatically share power with other GFM sources (inverters and synchronous generator (SG)) and follow the change of the load demand. However, they can be dispatched like their grid-following (GFL) counterparts to output the target active and reactive power. This will help the grid operator better manage their inverter-based resources (IBRs) for improved operation efficiency and reliability. Therefore, this paper proposes an innovative concept of dispatching GFM sources (inverters and SG) to output the target power for both grid-connected and islanded mode by adjusting their droop intercepts. The fundamental principle of doing so is that the GFM inverter's active and reactive power is dictated by its frequency and voltage, thus, dispatching active and reactve power of a GFM inverter can be achieved through dispatching its frequency and voltage. Moreover, the concept distinguishes the dispatch rules for grid-connected and islanded mode. Finally, the concept is validated with an example microgrid system with two GFM inverters, one diesel generator, one grid-following inverter and loads in both grid-connected and islanded mode. This pioneering work results in a practical guidance for power system energy management system (EMS) development to control a future grid with GFM and GFL inverters.

A Large-Scale Hardware Experiment Demonstration of Operating High Inverter-Based Resource Power Systems With Grid-Forming Inverters

This paper presents experimental hardware results from a microgrid system as the penetration level of grid-forming (GFM) inverters increases. The experiment aims to showcase the advantages of GFM inverters in enhancing system stability and to investigate the operational challenges in systems relying entirely on inverter-based resources (IBRs). Five test scenarios are devised to progressively increase GFM inverter penetration levels: 0% (S1), 19% (S2), 37% (S3), 68% (S4), and 100% (S5). To ensure consistency, identical loading conditions and dynamic events are applied across all scenarios. The conducted tests include load step changes, output variation of grid-following (GFL) inverters during islanded mode, transition operations (such as synchronization to the grid and islanding), and rateof- change-of-frequency (ROCOF) and voltage jump tests during grid-connected mode. Key findings from the tests are summarized as follows: (1) Scenario S1 proved most challenging for load steps, and GFL variations because of insufficient GFM capacity, leaving the diesel generator unable to handle transient ridethrough; (2) Scenario S5 was the most difficult for transition operations, because the lack of a diesel generator to maintain stiff bus voltage resulted in unexpected reactive power flows during synchronization, causing the point of common coupling (PCC) breaker to trip; (3) Scenarios S4 and S5 were particularly challenging for ROCOF tests because of minimal system inertia, leading to large transients that triggered breaker trips; and (4) Scenario S4 exhibited the strongest voltage recovery capability because of the presence of the diesel generator and a higher number of GFM inverters, both of which possess the highest capacity for reactive power injection.

De-Higgsing in eleven-dimensional supergravity on the squashed S 7

Abstract In this paper we construct the subset of modes onS 7 that are relevant in the compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity on a squashedS 7 when restricted to the sector that comprises singlets under the S p ( 1 ) × S p ( 2 ) isometry of the squashed sphere. Some of the properties of these modes, connected to the transition from the roundS 7 to the squashedS 7 , are analysed in detail. Special features of the Rarita–Schwinger operator, described in earlier work by Buchdahl, are explained and related to properties of the squashedS 7 operator spectrum obtained in previous work by the authors. We then discuss how the singlet modes give rise to supermultiplets in the left-squashed case, the phenomenon of de-Higgsing, and what happens to the AdS 4 fields in these supermultiplets under an orientation reversal (‘skew-whiffing’) of the squashedS 7 . Finally, we consider the possible choices of boundary conditions that appear for some of these fields in AdS 4 in the case of the right-squashed non-supersymmetric compactification, and how these choices may affect the stability of the gravity theory.

Dynamics and Control of Microgrids as a Resiliency Source

Microgrids can be operated in a utility-connected mode with the neighboring distribution system or in an islanded mode in separation with the distribution system. As the major disasters occur more and more often, islanded microgrid is proposed as a possible solution to serve essential loads until the utility service is restored. This paper evaluates the feasibility of using microgrids as a resiliency resource by a field test. A control scheme, integrating droop control and feedback control, is applied on a modified IEEE 13-node test feeders. The simulation results validate the proposed control scheme and the transient stability

Effect of Molecular Conformation on Intermolecular Interactions and Photovoltaic Performances of Giant Molecule Acceptors

The molecular conformation of giant molecule acceptors (GMAs) plays a significant role in regulating the intermolecular interactions and their photovoltaic performances in organic solar cells (OSCs). For the linear GMA GT‐l, the stronger homo‐molecular interaction causes its aggregation being weakly affected by the donor, thus forming an ordered molecular stacking and proper phase separation in its blend film. The star‐shaped GMA GT‐s‐based blend film shows a dominant hetero‐molecular interaction that suppresses the aggregation of the donor and acceptor, resulting in smaller phase separation and more uniform vertical phase distribution. While for another star‐shaped GMA GTs, the weakest hetero‐molecular interaction causes its blend film to form larger phase separation. Therefore, the GT‐l based OSC with PM6 as donor shows the highest charge mobilities, the fastest charge transfer (CT) process, reduced energy loss and less charge recombination, contributing to a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.03%. Comparatively, the PCEs of the OSCs based on GTs and GT‐s are 18.05% and 17.58% respectively. Notably, all the three GMAs based OSCs show excellent thermal stability and long‐term storage stability. This study provides a facile strategy by tuning the linking unit and its connecting mode for designing highly efficient and stable organic photovoltaic materials.

Deformation-enhanced hierarchical multiscale structure heterogeneity in a Pd-Si bulk metallic glass

Here, the multiscale structures in a Pd 82 Si 18 binary bulk metallic glass before and after deformation were studied using electron microscopies, high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and small-angle scattering techniques. The experimental results revealed an enhancement of hierarchical structure heterogeneities on multiple length scales after deformation. Hierarchical multiple shear bands of high number density were observed after bending, introducing complex but periodically distributed residual strain. Pair distribution function analysis revealed that the connectivity of the short-range clusters on the medium-range scale determines the packing density difference between the tension side and the compression side in the sample after bending. In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study also revealed a transformation of connection modes among short-range clusters under uniaxial tension and compression, which is consistent with those of triaxial tension/compression parts upon bending in Pd 82 Si 18 glassy alloys. The nanoscale heterogeneities for metallic glasses after deformation observed by small-angle scattering and transmission electron microscopy may be attributed to the nanoscale amorphous phase separation and interacting multiple shear bands enhanced by plastic deformation. Our findings suggested that the enhancement of hierarchical heterogeneous structure on multiple length scales may explain the excellent plasticity of Pd-Si glassy alloys, deepening the understanding of structure-property relation during plastic deformation in metallic glasses.

Phonon-induced near-field resonances in multiferroic BiFeO 3 thin films at infrared and THz wavelengths

Multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) shows several phonon modes at infrared (IR) to THz energies, which are expected to carry information on any sample property coupled to crystal lattice vibrations. While macroscopic IR studies of BFO are often limited by single-crystal size, scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) allows for IR thin film spectroscopy of nanoscopic probing volumes with negligible direct substrate contribution to the optical signal. In fact, polaritons such as phonon polaritons of BFO introduce a resonant tip–sample coupling in s-SNOM, leading to both stronger signals and enhanced sensitivity to local material properties. Here in this paper, we explore the near-field response of BFO thin films at three consecutive resonances (centered around 5 THz, 13 THz, and 16 THz), by combining s-SNOM with a free-electron laser. We study the dependence of these near-field resonances on both the wavelength and tip–sample distance. Enabled by the broad spectral range of the measurement, we probe phonon modes connected to the predominant motion of either the bismuth or oxygen ions. Therefore, we propose s-SNOM at multiple near-field resonances as a versatile and very sensitive tool for the simultaneous investigation of various sample properties.

Synthetic Reference-based Transition Optimal Control of Inverter for Surge-Current-Free Rapid Interface to Grid

This article addresses the problem of the transition between objective functions in optimal control for power inverters when switching between standalone and grid-connected modes. The work proposes the use of a synthetic reference during the transition between the corresponding objective functions. Moreover, the authors aim to show that a transition function can be imposed and controlled externally from the main optimal control routine. In the end, the simulation results demonstrate the importance of properly applying the proposed strategy for a smooth transition between the operating modes with minimal surge current. These results contrast with the strategies found in the literature where the smooth transition comes with the price of a few grid cycles to sync.

Advanced Hierarchical Control Strategies in Multi-Building Microgrids

This paper proposes a hierarchical control system for a multi-building AC microgrid with improved inertia and immunity to communication delay. The primary level control is based on a Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) control and the secondary level control is enhanced with a SmithPredictor to improve the stability of the system in the presence of communication delay. Moreover, tertiary level control is proposed to effectively control active and reactive power sharing between the grid and the microgrid. Islanded and grid-connected modes of the microgrid system under study are illustrated with the help of simulation results in MATLAB Simulink environment.

A Multi-objective Microgrid Assessment and Sizing Framework for Economic and Resilience Benefits

This paper presents an innovative multi-objective assessment and sizing framework for battery energy storage system paired with photovoltaics for a cost-effective and resilient microgrid. In the proposed framework, we simultaneously consider i) economic benefits from bundling grid services in grid-connected mode and ii) enhanced resilience by operating the microgrid in island mode upon outages of the main grid. Instead of simply treating resilience as another monetary value stream, this paper models resilience and economic benefits as two separate objectives. Multi-objective optimization is developed to explore different sizing and dispatch options and generate the Pareto front to assist decision-making in system design. Case studies on a real-world microgrid project in Puget Sound Energy system are presented to illustrate the proposed modeling and sizing methods.

Understanding the Inner-Workings of Language Models Through Representation Dissimilarity

We use model stitching to understand the internal representations of language models. Similar to vision models, we find that "more is better," and representations learned with more data and larger width can improve the performance of weaker models via stitching. We likewise find that certain architecture choices, using GeLU vs SoLU activation functions, influence the quality of learned representations. Finally, model stitching (as opposed to other model diagnostic methods, like mode connectivity) can localize the different generalization strategies of text classifiers under domain shift to certain hidden layers.

An Evaluation of the Economic and Resilience Benefits of a Microgrid in Northampton, Massachusetts

Recent developments and advances in distributed energy resource (DER) technologies make them valuable assets in microgrids. This paper presents an innovative evaluation framework for microgrid assets to capture economic benefits from various grid and behind-the-meter services in grid-connecting mode and resilience benefits in islanding mode. In particular, a linear programming formulation is used to model different services and DER operational constraints to determine the optimal DER dispatch to maximize economic benefits. For the resiliency analysis, a stochastic evaluation procedure is proposed to explicitly quantify the microgrid survivability against a random outage, considering uncertainties associated with photovoltaic (PV) generation, system load, and distributed generator failures. Optimal coordination strategies are developed to minimize unserved energy and improve system survivability, considering different levels of system connectedness. The proposed framework has been applied to evaluate a proposed microgrid in Northampton, Massachusetts that would link the Northampton Department of Public Works, Cooley Dickenson Hospital, and Smith Vocational Area High School. The findings of this analysis indicate that over a 20-year economic life, a 441 kW/441 kWh battery energy storage system, and 386 kW PV solar array can generate $2.5 million in present value benefits, yielding a 1.16 return on investment ratio. Results of this study also show that forming a microgrid generally improves system survivability, but the resilience performance of individual facilities varies depending on power-sharing strategies.

Design Power Control Strategies of Grid-Forming Inverters for Microgrid Application: Preprint

This paper compares two control schemes in the application control layer of a non-PLL grid-forming (GFM) inverter to gain the insights and understanding of how the two schemes affect the dynamic responses of the GFM inverters and the transition operation of microgrids. Both schemes can achieve smooth microgrid transition operation and power tracking, however, the first scheme expects to exhibit more transients due to the feedforward of the inverse dynamic model of the output filter. Simulation results show that both control schemes achieve successful transition operation with smooth transients, and the second control scheme exhibits slightly better transients in the system frequency during islanding operation and the first one has slightly superior transients in the system frequency during reconnection operation. The power tracking performance in the grid-connected mode is evaluated, which shows that the first scheme has better active power tracking and the second one has better reactive power tracking. The analysis and results are useful to develop reliable control schemes for non-PLL GFM inverters because more and more inverters will work as non-PLL grid-forming sources in the future grids due to better stability and reliability.

Optimized Dispatch of Distributed Energy Resources for Resiliency and Power Quality Improvements at the Grid-Edge

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) installed on low-voltage distribution systems, both utility-owned and nonutility owned may be employed to make improvements to system resiliency and power quality, in addition to simply serving load demand. By selectively dispatching active and reactive power from these existing DERs, improvements in voltage profiles and service availability during adverse events may be achieved. Further benefits can be gained by optimally choosing which DERs to dispatch power from, and the distribution of power from those DERs. For a given operating condition, using Linear Programming methods, optimal power dispatch values for individual DERs can be determined, while considering variables such as voltage gains, losses in the lines and the DERs, and DER reserve capacities. One such optimization technique is developed in this paper, and results from a real-time simulation study on a modified IEEE 13-bus distribution system with three DERs, are being presented. The operation of the optimized DER selection and dispatch algorithm is shown during normal operation of the transmission system when the DERs operate in grid-connected mode. Similar analyses can drive decision making during transmission system failure when the DERs operate in grid-forming or islanded mode.

Methods, systems, and computer readable media for protecting and controlling a microgrid with a dynamic boundary

Methods, systems, and computer readable mediums for protecting and controlling a microgrid with a dynamic boundary are disclosed. One method includes detecting a fault in a microgrid that includes a dynamic point-of-common-coupling (PCC), in response to determining that the microgrid is operating in a grid-connected mode, isolating the fault by tripping a microgrid side smart switch and a grid side smart switch that are located immediately adjacent to the fault, initiating the reclosing of the grid side smart switch, and initiating the reclosing for the microgrid side smart switch via resynchronization if the grid side smart switch is successfully reclosed, and in response to determining that the microgrid is operating in an islanded mode, isolating the fault by tripping a microgrid side smart switch that is located immediately adjacent to the fault, and initiating the reclosing of the microgrid side smart switch.

Control, Fault Management, and Grid Support Functionality of an MV AC-DC Solid State Transformer based EV Extreme Fast Charging Station

Electric vehicles (EVs) have become increasingly popular in recent times while revolutionizing the consumer and commercial transportation market. The development of charging infrastructure has become one of the priorities for increasing the adoption of EVs. Extreme fast charging (XFC) technology can reduce the so-called ’range anxiety’ of consumers as they significantly reduce the charging time. With the advent of wide band-gap (WBG) power devices and improvement in power electronic converters, medium voltage (MV) solid state transformer (SST) based XFC system has the potential to replace the traditional XFC stations because of the lower footprint, ease of installation, enhanced control feature, and better system efficiency. The control system design is one of the critical aspects of the SST development process. Careful consideration and detailed analysis are required to find out suitable control method for the SST based on its topology among different centralized and decentralized control architectures. Also, the control parameters selection and potential improvement to the transient response of the controller ought to be investigated. Another major concern of the SST is different types of internal fault which reduces the overall reliability of the XFC system. As a result, designing a robust protection system is essential. Among different fault modes, open circuit switch faults have received significant attention as an active research area because of their likelihood and severe effects on converters. Therefore, the power stages used in the XFC system require functional and accurate open circuit switch fault management methods. An equally significant aspect of this SST based XFC is its compatibility in a microgrid where there is no synchronous generator present. When the grid is not available, the XFC SSTs can provide grid forming capability and continue supplying the critical loads in islanded mode. The transition between grid connected and islanded mode, especially the grid resynchronization process has to be carefully performed for the safety of the microgrid components. The challenges posed by the aforementioned issues have inspired the work done in this dissertation. Here, a 13.2 kV, 1 MVA, AC/DC SST for the XFC system is examined and a comparative analysis is conducted to select the control architecture based on feasibility of implementation and performance. A detailed control parameter design process is demonstrated considering the sensor dynamics and delay. The selected decentralized control method is augmented by introducing a novel sensor-less load current feedforward method to provide better voltage regulation at the DC bus during a change of load. Next, in the fault management section, a hierarchical failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) is proposed to enable a systematic design of the internal fault protection of the XFC SST as there are limited examples in the literature regarding the analysis of the safety and design of the protection of a power electronic converter system. Novel open circuit switch fault management methods for the converters in the system are presented. Finally, XFC SST based MV microgrid operations in grid connected mode and islanded mode are explored. A secondary control method for grid resynchronization is presented and a design process of control parameters is shown to ensure the stability of the secondary voltage and frequency regulation.

Theory of zonal flow growth and propagation in toroidal geometry

The toroidal geometry of tokamaks and stellarators is known to play a crucial role in the linear physics of zonal flows (ZFs), leading to e.g. the Rosenbluth–Hinton residual and geodesic acoustic modes. However, descriptions of the nonlinear ZF growth from a turbulent background typically resort to simplified models of the geometry. We present a generalised theory of the secondary instability to model the ZF growth from turbulent fluctuations in toroidal geometry, demonstrating that the radial magnetic drift substantially affects the nonlinear ZF dynamics. In particular, the toroidicity gives rise to a new branch of propagating ZFs, the toroidal secondary mode, which is nonlinearly supported by the turbulence. We present a theory of this mode and compare the theory against gyrokinetic simulations of the secondary mode. The connection with other secondary modes—the ion-temperature-gradient and Rogers–Dorland–Kotschenreuther secondary modes—is also examined.
