A New Design of a Dressed Balloon Cavity with Superior Mechanical Properties

Superconducting spoke cavities are prone to multipactor - resonant raise of a number of electrons due to secondary emission. Recently proposed and tested by TRIUMF balloon-type spoke cavity showed an outstanding multipactor (MP) suppression property but unfortunately serious Q degradation at high fields. A new fully developed design of a dressed balloon cavity which can be used for any proton linac SSR2 section is developed. The design incorporates additional EP ports for high Q-factor demonstration. Superior properties are demonstrated, such as effective multipactor suppression, 40% lower Lorentz force coefficient, zero sensitivity to external pressure. This paper presents the results of coupled structural Multiphysics analysis, and engineering design of the dressed balloon cavity with EP ports.

Measurement of internal dark current in a 17 GHz accelerator structure with an elliptical sidewall

A 17 GHz single cell, standing wave, copper accelerator structure with an axisymmetric elliptical central cell sidewall was tested for internal and downstream dark current as a function of gradient up to 93 MV/m. The elliptical sidewall was predicted to suppress the internal dark current and the lower order multipactor modes as compared with a previously tested structure having a straight sidewall. During the conditioning phase of the elliptical sidewall structure, strong internal dark current generated by an N = 1 multipactor mode was observed at gradients in the 10 to 20 MV/m range. After conditioning with 2.2x10^5 pulses to 93 MV/m, the N = 1 mode was completely suppressed and no multipactor resonances were observed. The internal dark current was reduced to a comparatively low level, much smaller than in the previously studied, straight sidewall structure, in good agreement with simulations. The energy spectrum of the electrons colliding with the sidewall was measured using an isolated side dark current monitor and a bias voltage. As the conditioning progressed, the electron energy spectrum showed an increase in the concentration of lower energy electrons, also in good agreement with simulations. Studies of internal dark current may help to understand the rf conditioning and ultimate performance of high gradient accelerator structures.

Parametric studies of stream instability-induced higher harmonics in plasma ionization breakdown near an emissive dielectric surface

Here, in this work, we comprehensively investigate the generation of higher harmonic (HH) electric fields normal to the applied rf electric field in multipactor-coexisting plasma breakdown by fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and a theoretical model. Firstly, a base case at driving frequency 1 GHz, transverse rf electric field amplitude 3 MV m –1 , and background gas pressure 0.2 Torr, is studied in detail. The enhanced harmonic frequency observed is around ten times the fundamental rf frequency, significantly lower than the Langmuir frequency. A theoretical model reveals that the fundamental mechanism of HHs generation is stream–plasma instability, which originates from stream-like secondary electron emission interacting with plasma. The resulting HH frequency and the growth rate of its oscillating amplitude from the theoretical model, agree well with the PIC simulations. With increasing pressure, the HH oscillations are found to be significantly reduced. This is because at higher pressure the gas ionization rate is higher, which causes a more rapidly increasing plasma density, leaving less time for the growth of instability. Furthermore, the parameter space in terms of background gas pressure and rf field amplitude within which the HHs appear is revealed. Finally, the effect of the driving rf frequency on HHs is also investigated, and it is found that the instability-induced oscillating HHs field remains when the driving frequency is increased to 2 GHz, however, it is highly reduced at higher driving frequency of 5 GHz, as oscillations at the fundamental frequency start playing a more important role.

Summary of Working Group 3: Laser and High-Gradient Structure-Based Acceleration

Accelerating particles at high gradients with high efficiencies is essential for reduction of size and cost of future accelerators for science and industry. This includes a future multi-TeV e+e- collider for particle, free-electron lasers for basic energy sciences and national security, industrial accelerators for energy and environmental applications, and accelerators for other applications. One way to achieve this is to use advanced externally-powered structures, both laser and RF driven. Working Group 3 (WG3) discussed novel accelerating structures with new geometries, new materials, frequencies from microwave to THz and optical spectrum, and operating conditions from room temperature to cryogenic. Presentations included recent advances in understanding RF breakdown and multipactor phenomena at different frequencies and materials, and other physics limitations to the accelerating gradient. Other relevant topics, such as developing high-gradient photoinjectors, high-efficiency RF power sources, and RF structures for a potential muon collider were discussed also. More details on each of the WG3 topics can be found in the articles published in these proceedings.

Testing and Processing of Pre-production 325 MHz Single Spoke Resonator Power Couplers for PIP-II Project

Fundamental 325 MHz power couplers are designed, built and tested for SSR cavities in PIP-II project. Couplers should work in CW mode at power level 7.5kW w/o beam and ~15 kW with the 2 mA beam. At pre-production stage we built and tested 6 couplers, produced by CPI (FNAL) and PMB (IJCLab) and 4 more couplers will be tested soon. Two of tested couplers had TiN coated ceramic window. In warm test stand two couplers were mounted on the coupling chamber and tested in SW regime at full reflection with phase controlled by position of short and reflection insert. Couplers were tested at pulse mode (up to 25kW) and cw mode (12kW) with HV bias or without bias. Test results demonstrated that 3.5 kV DC bias completely suppresses multipactor in coupler. Vacuum activity in coupler was controlled by e-pickups and build-in vacuum gauges, located near the vacuum side of window. Power processing without DC bias was done for several couplers with and without TiN coating on ceramic window. Test results are presented and discussing in paper.

Optimization of a traveling wave superconducting radiofrequency cavity for upgrading the International Linear Collider

The standing wave TESLA niobium-based superconducting radio frequency structure is limited to an accelerating gradient of about 50 MV/m by the critical rf magnetic field. To break through this barrier, we explore the option of niobium-based traveling wave (TW) structures. Optimization of TW structures was done considering experimentally known limiting electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that a TW structure can have an accelerating gradient above 70 MeV/m that is about 1.5 times higher than contemporary standing wave structures with the same critical magnetic field. The other benefit of TW structures shown is R/Q about 2 times higher than the TESLA structure that reduces the dynamic heat load by a factor of 2. A method is proposed how to make TW structures multipactor-free. Some design proposals are offered to facilitate fabrication. Further increase of the real-estate gradient (equivalent to 80 MV/m active gradient) is also possible by increasing the length of the accelerating structure because of higher group velocity and cell-to-cell coupling. Realization of this work opens paths to International Linear Collider energy upgrades beyond 1 to 3 TeV in competition with CLIC. The paper will discuss corresponding opportunities and challenges.

Testing of PIP-II pre-production 650 MHz couplers in warm test stand and in cryomodule

650 MHz fundamental power couplers were developed for PIP-II project to deliver RF power for low-beta and high-beta elliptical cavities. Few prototypes were built and tested and after some modification we built 8 pre-production couplers (with few spares for vacuum side) for HB650 cryomodule. All couplers were successfully tested in pulse mode (up to 100kW) and in CW mode (up to 50kW) in test stand at full reflection at 8 phases. In baseline configuration with DC bias we do not see any multipactoring activity after short processing. We also tested power processing without bias for uncoated and TiN coated ceramic window. Results of these studies presented in this paper. One of the coupler was assembled on LB650 cavity and tested at cryogenic environment in STC cryostat at ~20kW power with full reflection at different reflection phase. We also demonstrated good result from power processing without bias for warm and cold cavity. Six couplers were assembled on HB650 cavities in pre-production cryomodule. Test results from cryomodule qualification is discussing in this paper.
