Petrogenesis of Apollo 12 mare basalts. Part 1: Multiple melts and fractional crystallization to explain olivine and ilmenite basalt compositions

Mare basalts returned by the Apollo 12 mission have been divided into 4 groups on the basis of mineralogy and whole-rock chemistry: olivine basalts; pigeonite basalts; ilmenite basalts; and feldspathic basalts. James and Wright and Rhodes et al. concluded that the olivine and pigeonite groups were co-magmatic and that the within group variations are due to fractional crystallization of olivine and minor Cr-spinel, with pigeonite replacing olivine in the pigeonite basalts. Rhodes et al. concluded that the parental compositions for these suites were probably represented by the vitrophyres, and the olivine basalts are comprised essentially of cumulates and the pigeonites of evolved end-members. However, Neal et al. have demonstrated, using trace-element considerations, that the Apollo 12 olivine and pigeonite suites are not related. The ilmenite basalts were studied extensively by Dungan and Brown who noted that both cumulates and evolved fractionates were present within this group. In their modeling, Dungan and Brown used the vitrophyre compositions as parents. Neal et al. demonstrated that the feldspathic suite was probably comprised of only one member - 12038. Herein, the ilmenite and olivine basalts are demonstrated to be the products of several non-modal partial melting events of a single source followed by closed-system fractional crystallization.

Solar radiative transfer in cirrus clouds. I - Single-scattering and optical properties of hexagonal ice crystals. II - Theory and computations of multiple scattering in an anisotropic medium

The light scattering and absorption programs of Cai and Liou (1982) and Takano and Jaweera (1985) are extended to include hexagonal ice crystals randomly and horizontally oriented in space. The scattering and polarization results for the ice crystals are calculated. The results are compared with measurement data. The single-scattering properties for horizontally oriented columns and plates are presented and used to explain halos and arcs observed in the atmopshere. In the second section, the theory and computations for multiple scattering in cirrus clouds containing oriented ice crystals are presented. The radiative transfer in clouds composed of horizontally oriented ice crystals is formulated. Also, reflected and transmitted intensities, planetary albedo, and polarization in multiple scattering by ice crystals are discussed.

Low cycle fatigue of MAR-M 200 single crystals at 760 and 870 deg C

Fully reversed low cycle fatigue tests were conducted on single crystals of the nickel-base superalloys Mar-M 200 at 760 C and 870 C. At 760 C, planar slip (octahedral) lead to orientation-dependent strain hardening and cyclic lives. Multiple slip crystals strain hardened the most, resulting in relatively high stress ranges and low lives. Single slip crystals strain hardened the least, resulting in relatively low stress ranges and higher lives. A preferential crack initiation site which was related to slip plane geometry was observed in single slip orientated crystals. At 870 C, the trends were quite different, and the slip character was much more homogeneous. As the tensile axis orientation deviated from 001 , the stress ranges increased and the cyclic lives decreased. Two possible mechanisms were proposed to explain the behavior: one is based on Takeuchi and Kuramoto's cube cross-slip model, and the other is based on orientation-dependent creep rates.

A Method for Incorporating Quartz Crystal Microbalance Thermo-Gravimetric Assessment Data in Contamination Modeling

The science objectives of increasingly ambitious space missions require meeting stringent contamination requirements. Contamination transport models are based on established principles such as Fick’s law for contamination diffusion within the source material, Arrhenius factors to account for temperature variations and free molecular transport for spacecraft operating in vacuum. In addition to the science principles, empirical data obtained from ASTM E1559 testing is used for engineering contamination modeling. The ASTM E1559 test provides outgassing rate data for materials at expected spacecraft temperatures during a mission. Multiple quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) can be operated at different temperatures to measure the amount of contamination condensation that can occur on various spacecraft surfaces. At the conclusion of the ASTM E1559 test a thermo-gravimetric assessment (TGA) can be performed by heating the QCMs at a linear rate to obtain contamination desorption data. This TGA data provides a wealth of information that can be incorporated into contamination models. A method for applying this data is presented.

Feasibility of low cost silicon solar cells.

Future costs of silicon solar cells are projected on the basis of more than a thousand-fold increase in volume. If no major application of new manufacturing technology is made, the cost remains excessive for any large scale energy system. However, the development of a multiple-ribbon crystal growth process could permit a 300-fold reduction in cell costs to about $375/kW of cell output.

Origin of high-Ti lunar ultramafic glasses

A series of high pressure melting experiments were performed on a synthetic analog of the Apollo 14 Black Glass. At 15 kb and 1400 C, olivine is the liquidus phase. At 25 kb and 1450 C, orthopyroxene and Cr-spinel crystallize. A multiple saturation point with olivine + orthopyroxene + spinel on the liquidus occurs at 20 kb and 1440 C. It was proposed that the high-Ti ultramafic glass evolved from a low-Ti Green Glass generated deep in the lunar interior that assimilated shallow-level, late stage cumulates of magma ocean differentiation. Heat for assimilation is provided by superheat of the low-Ti magma and melts high-Ca pyroxene and ilmenite cumulates at a depth of 100 km. This model is a variant of that proposed by Hubbard and Minear and rejected by Ringwood and Kesson.

Extended X-ray observations of Scorpius X-1 with a Bragg crystal spectrometer

Observations covering multiple orbital periods of the X-ray source Sco X-1 were carried out in 1975 and 1976 with the graphite crystal spectrometer aboard OSO 8. Time-averaged continuum spectra are featureless and are reasonably well described in terms of a Comptonized thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum in which kT is about 1.5-2 keV and in which the number of electron scatterings that each photon is assumed to have undergone is of the order of 100. Line limits, typically with equivalent widths of a few electron volts, are established for important emission lines of Si XIII, Si XIV, S XV, S XVI, and Fe XXV as a function of binary phase.

A multiple p-n junction structure obtained from as-grown Czochralski silicon crystals by heat treatment - Application to solar cells

Multiple p-n junctions have been prepared in as-grown Czochralski p-type silicon through overcompensation near the oxygen periodic concentration maxima by oxygen thermal donors generated during heat treatment at 450 C. Application of the multiple p-n-junction configuration to photovoltaic energy conversion has been investigated. A new solar-cell structure based on multiple p-n-junctions was developed. Theoretical analysis showed that a significant increase in collection efficiency over the conventional solar cells can be achieved.

Equiaxed Dendritic Solidification Experiment (EDSE)

The objective of the research is to quantitatively determine and understand the fundamental mechanisms that control the microstructural evolution during equiaxed dendritic solidification. A microgravity experiment will be conducted to obtain benchmark data on the transient growth and interaction of up to four equiaxed crystals of a pure and transparent metal analog (succinonitrile, SCN) under strictly diffusion-dominated conditions. Of interest in the experiment are the transient evolution of the primary and secondary dendrite tip speeds, the dendrite morphology and solid fraction, the tip selection criterion, and the temperature field in the melt for a range of interaction "strengths" between the crystals. The experiment extends the microgravity measurements of Glicksman and co-workers isothermal dendritic growth experiment (IDGE) for steady growth of a single dendrite to a case where growth transients are introduced due to thermal interactions between neighboring dendrites - a situation closer to actual casting conditions. Corresponding Earth-based experiments will be conducted to ascertain the influence of melt convection. The experiments are supported by a variety of analytical models and numerical simulations. The data will be used to develop and test theories of transient dendritic growth and the solidification of multiple interacting equiaxed crystals in a supercooled melt.

Equiaxed Dendritic Solidification Experiment (EDSE)

The objective of the research is to quantitatively determine and understand the fundamental mechanisms that control the microstructural evolution during solidification of an assemblage of equiaxed dendritic crystals. A microgravity experiment will be conducted to obtain benchmark data on the transient growth and interaction of up to four equiaxed crystals of a pure and transparent metal analog (succinonitrile, SCN) under strictly diffusion dominated conditions. Of interest in the experiment are the transient evolution of the primary and secondary dendrite tip speeds, the dendrite morphology (i.e., tip radii, branch spacings, etc.) and solid fraction, the tip selection criterion, and the temperature field in the melt for a range of initial supercoolings and, thus, interaction "strengths" between the crystals. The experiment thus extends the microgravity measurements of Glicksman and coworkers for steady growth of a single dendrite [Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE), first flown on USMP-2] to a case where growth transients are introduced due to thermal interactions between neighboring dendrites - a situation more close to actual casting conditions. Corresponding earth-based experiments will be conducted to ascertain the influence of melt convection. The experiments are supported by a variety of analytical models and numerical simulations. The data will primarily be used to develop and test theories of transient dendritic growth and the solidification of multiple interacting equiaxed crystals in a supercooled melt.

The Advanced Automated Directional Solidification Furnace

The Advanced Automated Directional Solidification Furnace (AADSF) is a five zone tubular furnace designed for Bridgman-Stockbarger, other techniques of crystal growth involving multiple temperature zones such as vapor transport experiments and other materials science experiments. The five zones are primarily designed to produce uniform hot and cold temperature regions separated by an adiabatic region constructed of a heat extraction plate and an insert to reduce radiation from the hot to the cold zone. The hot and cold zone temperatures are designed to reach 1600 C and 1100 C, respectively. AADSF operates on a Multi-Purpose Experiment Support Structure (MPESS) within the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle on the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP) missions. Two successful flights, both employing the directional solidification or Bridgman Stockbarger technique for crystal growth have been made, and crystals of HgCdTe and PbSnTe grown in microgravity have been produced on USMP-2 and USMP-3, respectively. The addition of a Sample Exchange Mechanism (SEM) will enable three different samples to be processed on future flights including the USMP-4 mission.

Photometric properties of the surface of Io and their influence on line formation in the atmosphere

A quantitative theory is given for line formation in an atmosphere above a surface with backscattering properties. Sufficiently high spatial and spectral resolution spectra of resonance lines in Io region A can yield data on the surface scattering properties as well as the number density of scattering molecules. Macroscopically homogeneous models of scattering from the surface of Io are discussed and it was concluded that multiple reflection from crystal facets is the most likely cause for the observed phase variations of the geometric albedo.

Three-dimensional structure of human serum albumin

The three-dimensional structure of human serum albumin has been solved at 6.0 A resolution by the method of multiple isomorphous replacement. Crystals were grown from solutions of polyethylene glycol in the infrequently observed space group P42(1)2 and diffracted X-rays to lattice d-spacings of less than 2.9 A. The electron density maps are of high quality and revealed the structure as a predominantly alpha-helical globin protein in which the course of the polypeptide can be traced. The binding loci of several organic compounds have been determined.

Future mission opportunities and requirements for advanced space photovoltaic energy conversion technology

The variety of potential future missions under consideration by NASA will impose a broad range of requirements on space solar arrays, and mandates the development of new solar cells which can offer a wide range of capabilities to mission planners. Major advances in performance have recently been achieved at several laboratories in a variety of solar cell types. Many of those recent advances are reviewed, the areas are examined where possible improvements are yet to be made, and the requirements are discussed that must be met by advanced solar cell if they are to be used in space. The solar cells of interest include single and multiple junction cells which are fabricated from single crystal, polycrystalline and amorphous materials. Single crystal cells on foreign substrates, thin film single crystal cells on superstrates, and multiple junction cells which are either mechanically stacked, monolithically grown, or hybrid structures incorporating both techniques are discussed. Advanced concentrator array technology for space applications is described, and the status of thin film, flexible solar array blanket technology is reported.

Intricate Crystal Structure of Dihydrolipoamide Dehydrogenase (E3) with its Binding Protein: Multiple Copies, Dynamic and Static Disorders

Human E3 and binding protein E3BP are two components of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. Crystallization of E3 with 221-amino acid fragment of E3BP (E3BPdd) led to crystals that diffracted to a resolution of 2.6 Angstroms. Structure determination involved molecular replacement using a dimer of E3 homolog as a search model and de novo building of the E3BPdd peptide. Solution was achieved by inclusion of one E3 dimer at a time, followed by refinement until five E3 dimers were located. This complete content of E3 provided electron density maps suitable for tracing nine peptide chains of E3BPdd, eight of them being identified with partial occupancies. Final content of the asymmetric unit consists of five E3 dimers, each binding one E3BPdd molecule. In four of these molecular complexes, E3BPdd is in static disorder resulting in E3BPdd binding to either one or the other monomer of the E3 dimer. However, E3BPdd of the fifth E3 dimer forms specific contacts that lock it at one monomer. In addition to this static disorder, E3BPdd reveals high mobility in the limited space of the crystal lattice. Support from NIH and NASA.

Data association multiple target tracking using a phase-mostly liquid crystal television

This paper presents a technique of using data association target tracking in a motion sequence via an adaptive joint transform correlator. The massive data in the field of view can be reduced to a few correlation peaks. The average velocity of a target during the tracking cycle is then determined from the location of the correlation peak. A data association algorithm is used for the analysis of these correlation signals, with which multiple targets can be tracked. A phase-mostly liquid-crystal TV is used in the hybrid joint transform correlation system, and simultaneous tracking of three targets is demonstrated.
