Polarized TMD fragmentation functions for 𝐽/𝜓 production

We calculate the matching, at leading order, of the transverse momentum-dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) for light quarks and gluons fragmenting to a 𝐽/𝜓 onto polarized nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) TMDFFs. The NRQCD TMDFFs have an operator product expansion in terms of nonperturbative NRQCD production matrix elements. Using the results we obtain, we make predictions for the light quark fragmentation contribution to the production of polarized 𝐽/𝜓 in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) both for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized beams. These results are an important contribution to polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in SIDIS and thus are needed for comparison with experiments at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Photoproduction of fully charmed tetraquark at electron-ion colliders

In this work, we investigate the inclusive photoproduction of the C -odd, S -wave fully charmed tetraquark at electron-ion colliders within the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework, at the lowest order in velocity and α s . The value of the NRQCD long-distance matrix element is estimated from two phenomenological potential models. Our studies reveal that the photoproduction of the 1 + − fully charmed tetraquark may be difficult to observe at HERA and the EicC; nevertheless, its observation prospects at the EIC appear to be bright. Born-Oppenheimer potentials for $SU$(3) gauge theory

We develop parametrizations of eight of the lowest Born-Oppenheimer potentials for quarkonium hybrid mesons as functions of the separation r of the static quark and antiquark sources. The parameters are determined by fitting results calculated using pure SU⁡(3) lattice gauge theory. The parametrizations have the correct limiting behavior at small r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with gluelumps. They have the correct limiting behavior at large r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with excitations of a relativistic string. There is a narrow avoided crossing in the small-r region between two potentials with the same Born-Oppenheimer quantum numbers.

Hard-scattering approach to strongly hindered electric dipole transitions between heavy quarkonia

The conventional wisdom in dealing with electromagnetic transition between heavy quarkonia is the multipole expansion, when the emitted photon has a typical energy of order quarkonium binding energy. Nevertheless, in the case when the energy carried by the photon is of order typical heavy quark momentum, the multipole expansion doctrine is expected to break down. In this work, we apply the “hard-scattering” approach originally developed to tackle the strongly hindered magnetic dipole ( M 1 ) transition [Y. Jia , ] to the strongly hindered electric dipole ( E 1 ) transition between heavy quarkonia. We derive the factorization formula for the strongly hindered E 1 transition rates at the lowest order in velocity and α s in the context of the nonrelativistic QCD, and conduct a detailed numerical comparison with the standard predictions for various bottomonia and charmonia E 1 transition processes. Direct quarkonium production in DIS from a joint CGC and NRQCD framework

We compute the differential cross section for direct quarkonium production in high-energy electron-nucleus collisions at small 𝑥. Our computation is performed within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism that separates the calculation into short distance coefficients and long distance matrix elements that depend on the color and spin of the state. We obtain the short distance coefficients of the production of the heavy quark pair within the framework of the color glass condensate effective field theory, which resums coherent multiple interactions of the heavy quark pair with the nucleus to all orders. Our results are expressed as the convolution of perturbatively calculable functions with multipoint lightlike Wilson line correlators. In the correlation limit, we establish the correspondence between our color glass condensate formulation with calculations employing the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. We extend this correspondence by resumming kinematic power corrections within the improved TMD framework, which interpolates between the TMD formalism and 𝑘 ⊥ -factorization formalism. We present a detailed numerical analysis, focusing on 𝐽/𝜓 production in the kinematics accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider, highlighting the importance of genuine higher-order saturation contributions when the electron collides with a large nucleus. Our results are also valid in the photoproduction limit where we expect the largest contribution from genuine higher-order saturation contributions which could be accessed in ultraperipheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions.

Binding energy of the 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 tetraquark from lattice QCD with relativistic and nonrelativistic heavy-quark actions

We present a new determination of the $b\bar{b}$𝑢⁢𝑑 (𝐽 𝑃 = 1 + , 𝐼 = 0) tetraquark binding energy using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with domain-wall light quarks and a nonperturbatively tuned three-parameter anisotropic-clover “relativistic” action for the 𝑏 quarks. We also perform a direct comparison with a reanalysis of data generated in prior work using a lattice-nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) action for the 𝑏 quarks and otherwise identical parameters. Using the new data with relativistic 𝑏 quarks from seven different ensembles with multiple lattice spacings and pion masses, we perform combined chiral and continuum extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) RHQ =(−76 ±23) MeV. For the NRQCD data from five ensembles, we perform chiral-only extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) NRQCD = (−74 ±17 ±10) MeV. The lower magnitude of the results obtained here, compared to the original analysis in [Phys. Rev. D 100, 014503 (2019)], is due to the use of the symmetric parts of the correlation matrices with local four-quark operators only.

Proton’s gluon GPDs at large skewness and gravitational form factors from near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction

We study the exclusive near threshold photoproduction of heavy quarkonium in the framework of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) factorization, taking the 𝐽/𝜓 production as an example. Because of the threshold kinematics, the Compton-like amplitudes are related to gluon GPDs at large skewness 𝜉, distinct from the common kinematics in asymptotic high energy where the skewness is typically small. We discuss the nature of large-𝜉 expansion of these amplitudes in terms of the moments of gluon GPDs in the large-𝜉 limit. Based on that, we propose several ways to extract the first few moments of the gluon GPDs from these amplitudes, with the leading ones corresponding to the gluonic gravitational or energy-momentum tensor form factors (GFFs). We apply these methods to analyze the recent near threshold 𝐽/𝜓 production measurements by the 𝐽/𝜓 007 experiment and GlueX Collaboration and find that the 𝜉 scaling of the measured differential cross sections is consistent with the asymptotic behavior. However, the current data are not accurate enough yet for a complete determination of the gluonic GFFs, and therefore we consider some prospects for better extractions in the future.

Bayesian Inferring Nucleon Gravitational Form Factors via Near-Threshold 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction

With Bayesian inference, we investigate the impact of recent near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 production measurements by the 𝐽/𝜓⁢007 experiment and GlueX Collaboration on the extraction of proton gravitational form factors. We apply the generalized parton distribution framework at the next to leading order and demonstrate a stable expansion for the near-threshold kinematics. We find that the experimental constraints are in good agreement with the state-of-the-art lattice simulations, where negative 𝐶 𝑞 ⁡(𝑡) and 𝐶 𝑔 ⁡(𝑡) are strongly preferred. This highlights a great potential to extract them from future high-precision experiments.

Gauge invariance of radiative jet functions in the position-space formulation of SCET

In subleading powers of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), the Lagrangian contains couplings between soft quarks and hard-collinear quarks. Matrix elements of the hard-collinear parts of these couplings are radiative jet functions. In the position-space formulation of SCET, the Lagrangians are constructed from operators that appear to be gauge invariant. Nevertheless, we find violations of gauge invariance arise in the hard-collinear sector because gauge transformations can shift the momentum of a hard-collinear quark field from the hard-collinear sector to the soft sector, where the hard-collinear fields, by definition, have no support. The violations of gauge invariance are manifested in perturbation theory in the hard-collinear sector through the absence of certain Feynman diagrams that would be present in full QCD. A consequence of the absence of these diagrams is that the radiative jet functions that follow directly from the position-space Lagrangians are not gauge invariant, and we demonstrate this through explicit calculations in lower-order perturbation theory. We obtain gauge-invariant Lagrangians by adding to existing position-space Lagrangians terms that are proportional to the soft-quark equation of motion. These gauge-invariant Lagrangians are valid for nonzero, as well as zero, quark masses. We also remark briefly on the gauge invariance of certain Lagrangians that have been constructed in the label-momentum formulation of SCET. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Open quantum systems for quarkonia

I review recent applications of the open quantum system framework in the understanding of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions, which has been used as a probe of the quark–gluon plasma for decades. The derivation of the Lindblad equations for quarkonium in both the quantum Brownian motion and the quantum optical limits and their semiclassical counterparts is explained. The hierarchy of time scales assumed in the derivation is justified from the separation of energy scales in nonrelativistic effective field theories of QCD. Physical implications of the open quantum system approach are also discussed. Finally, I list some open questions for future studies.

Bottomonium suppression from the three-loop QCD potential

We compute the suppression of bottomonium in the quark-gluon plasma using the three-loop QCD static potential. The potential describes the spin-averaged bottomonium spectrum below threshold with a less than 1% error. Within potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics and an open quantum systems framework, we compute the evolution of the bottomonium density matrix. The values of the quarkonium transport coefficients are obtained from lattice QCD measurements of the bottomonium in-medium width and thermal mass shift; we additionally include for the first time a vacuum contribution to the dispersive coefficient γ . Using the three-loop potential and the values of the heavy quarkonium transport coefficients, we find that the resulting bottomonium nuclear modification factor is consistent with experimental observations, while at the same time reproducing the lattice measurements of the in-medium width. Charged multihadron systems in lattice QCD+QED

Systems with the quantum numbers of up to 12 charged and neutral pseudoscalar mesons, as well as one-, two-, and three-nucleon systems, are studied using dynamical lattice quantum chromodynamics and quantum electrodynamics (QCD+QED) calculations and effective field theory. QED effects on hadronic interactions are determined by comparing systems of charged and neutral hadrons after tuning the quark masses to remove strong isospin breaking effects. A nonrelativistic effective field theory, which perturbatively includes finite-volume Coulomb effects, is analyzed for systems of multiple charged hadrons and found to accurately reproduce the lattice QCD+QED results. QED effects on charged multihadron systems beyond Coulomb photon exchange are determined by comparing the two- and three-body interaction parameters extracted from the lattice QCD+QED results for charged and neutral multihadron systems.

Light-front wavefunctions of mesons by design

Abstract We develop a mechanism to build the light-front wavefunctions (LFWFs) of meson bound states on a small-sized basis function representation. Unlike in a standard Hamiltonian formalism, the Hamiltonian in this method is implicit, and the information of the system is carried directly by the functional form and adjustable parameters of the LFWFs. In this work, we model the LFWFs for four charmonium states, $$\eta _c$$ η c , $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ , $$\psi '$$ ψ ′ , and $$\psi (3770)$$ ψ ( 3770 ) as superpositions of orthonormal basis functions. We choose the basis functions as eigenfunctions of an effective Hamiltonian, which has a longitudinal confining potential in addition to the transverse confining potential from light-front holographic QCD. We determine the basis function parameters and superposition coefficients by employing both guidance from the nonrelativistic description of the meson states and the experimental measurements of the meson decay widths. With the obtained wavefunctions, we study the features of those meson states, including charge radii and parton distribution functions. We use the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ LFWF to calculate the meson production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, and the $$\eta _c$$ η c LFWF to calculate its diphoton transition form factor. Both results show good agreement with experiments. The obtained LFWFs have simple-functional forms and can be readily used to predict additional experimental observables.

The proton radius (puzzle?) and its relatives

We review determinations of the electric proton charge radius from a diverse set of low-energy observables. We explore under which conditions it can be related to Wilson coefficients of appropriate effective field theories. This discussion is generalized to other low-energy constants. This provides us with a unified framework to deal with a set of low-energy constants of the proton associated with its electromagnetic interactions. Unambiguous definitions of these objects are given, as well as their relation with expectation values of QCD operators. We show that the proton radius obtained from spectroscopy and lepton–proton scattering (when both the lepton and proton move with nonrelativistic velocities) is related to the same object of the underlying field theory with O ( α ) precision. The model dependence of these analyses is discussed. The prospects of constructing effective field theories valid for the kinematic configuration of present, or near-future, lepton–proton scattering experiments are explored.
