Construction and interpretation of topographic and relief contour maps of Tycho northeast rim
Basaltic rocks, hyaloclastites, and fossil fragments incorporated in volcanic material, dredged from the flanks of Northeast Bank on the Southern California Borderland, show trace element abundances typical of eastern Pacific basin alkali basalts but enriched (880 ppm) Ba. The fossil fragments, incorporated in breccia, hyaloclastite, and agglomerate, include a fauna which lived in less than 50 m of water, as well as forms from the intertidal zone. Bathymetry of the bank and the depth range of the dredged zone indicate that there has been at least 300 or as much as 500 m subsidence since the volcanism which incorporated the fauna in volcanic material. Isostatic adjustments due to crustal load of the bank can account for this subsidence.
The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 multispectral scanner imagery of the nearshore surface waters of the Northeast Pacific Ocean is proving to be a useful tool for determining source and dispersal of suspended particulate matter. The principal sources of the turbid water, seen best on the green and red bands, are river and stream effluents and actively eroding coastlines; secondary sources are waste effluents and production of planktonic organisms, but these may sometimes be masked by the very turbid plumes of suspended sediment being discharged into the nearshore zone during times of high river discharge. The configuration and distribution of the plumes of turbid water also can be used to infer near-surface current directions. Comparison of imagery of the nearshore water off the northern California coast from October 1972 and January 1973 shows a reversal of the near-surface currents, from predominantly south-setting in the fall (California Current) to north-setting in the winter (Davidson Current).
The role of Northeast Utilities in the Kaman/NASA large wind generator study is reviewed. The participation falls into four principal areas: (1) technical assistance; (2) economic analysis; (3) applications; and (4) institutional and legal. A model for the economic viability of wind power is presented.
The enabling legislation of 1976 for improvement of service in the Northeast corridor (NEC) requires a schedule of 2 h 40 min between Washington and New York City by 1981 and 3 h 40 min between NYC and Boston, when the electrification is completed. Various options of the NEC operation that may satisfy the legislation were investigated, particularly in terms of travel time and energy consumption. NEC operations were compared with overseas systems and practices. The emerging new technology of AC traction was also evaluated.
Precipitation forecasting parameters for northeast Brazil were developed. Hydrological, sociological, and economic aspects were examined. A drought forecasting model is presented.
The establishment of a thermally direct local circulation which has its ascending branch at about 10 deg N and its descending branch over northeast Brazil and the adjoining oceanic region is proposed as a possible mechanism for the occurrence of severe droughts over this Brazilian region. The driving for this anomalous circulation is provided by enhanced moist convection due to the effect of warmer sea surface anomalies over the northern tropical Atlantic and cooling associated with colder sea surface temperature anomalies in the southern tropical Atlantic. A simple primitive equation model is used to calculate the frictionally-controlled and thermally-driven circulation due to a prescribed heating function in a resting atmosphere, and a series of numerical experiments are carried out to test the sensitivity of the Goddard Laboratory's model to prescribed sea surface temperature anomalies over the tropical Atlantic.
The paper examines Seasat wind and wave observations collected in the eye of hurricane Iva on August 13, 1978 in the northeast Pacific. A maximum wind speed of 25-30 m/s is observed, along with a banana-shape high-wind-speed distribution. Two-dimensional Fourier transforms of selected SAR scenes show a dominant wavefield characterized by wavelengths of 166-211 m, with a fanlike distribution of propagation directions. A simple geometric model is proposed to explain the dominant wave field in terms of prior storm intensity and location, which is combined with the Ross parametric hurricane wave model and Seasat wind and wave data to estimate a value of 43 km for the effective radial distance from the storm center to the region of maximum winds.
The northeastern section of Thaumasia is located in the heavily cratered southern highlands of Mars between 30 S and 47.5 S and 67.5 W and 90 W. To the northwest lies the Tharis bulge and to the southeast is the Argyre Basin. Previous mapping in Thaumasia included a geologic map of the entire guadrangel by McGill (1978) at a 1:5,000,000 scale and a map of lava flows in the northwest quadrant by Scott and Tanaka (1981). Most investigations concentrated west of 90 W long. in conjunction with the Tharis volcanics. This investigation was designed to examine the overall geology of this section of Thaumasia. After distinguishing various geomorphical units, a geologic map was made at a scale of 1:2,000,000. Lastly, a general sequence of events was developed for the area. Mapping was done from individual low, medium, and high resolution images from the Viking missions, as well as using a 1:2,000,000 scale photo mosaic of the northeast quadrant of Thaumasia. Amount of cratering and faulting, superposition, differences in morphology, and albedo were used to separate out geomorphologically distinct units.
New optical spectrophotometry of the faint filaments northeast of the bright supernova remnant IC 443 show emission-line ratios very similar to those seen in the bright filaments of IC 443 and other supernova remnants. This suggests that these northeastern filaments also represent shock-heated interstellar gas and are not simply the southern boundary of the neighboring H II region S249 as previously suspected. If these filaments are associated with IC 443, they then reveal a much more extended remnant structure than previously assumed and permit a relatively accurate determination of IC 443's distance via its interaction with S249.
The size distribution and composition of lower tropospheric aerosols were measured off the northeast American coastline under clear air and disturbed meteorological conditions. Under the clear air conditions observed on 5 August 1982, with air flow from west to east, sulfate-rich stratified layers are the dominant feature of aerosol distribution in the lowest 3000 m of the troposphere. The encroachment of a warm frontal system over the study area on 9 August 1982 resulted in dramatic changes in aerosol distribution and composition prior to any precipitation, probably due to increased vertical mixing and dilution of pollutant aerosols. Chloride becomes the dominant water soluble anion in the lower 3000 m, primarily due to a several fold decrease in sulfate. Although these results are limited to only two sets of measurements, the data indicate the variability which can occur in the tropospheric vertical aerosol distributions at remote locations. A knowledge of the structure and stability of these stratified layers is of particular importance to studies of the ocean-troposphere chemistry problem.
Large scale circulation features are presented as related to wet spells over northeast Brazil (Nordeste) during the rainy season (March and April) of 1979. The rainy season season is devided into dry and wet periods, the FGGE and geostationary satellite data was averaged and mean and departure fields of basic variables and cloudiness were studied. Analysis of seasonal mean circulation features show: lowest sea level easterlies beneath upper level westerlies; weak meridional winds; high relative humidity over the Amazon basin and relatively dry conditions over the South Atlantic Ocean. A fluctuation was found in the large scale circulation features on time scales of a few weeks or so over Nordeste and the South Atlantic sector. Even the subtropical High SLP's have large departures during wet episodes, implying a short period oscillation in the Southern Hemisphere Hadley circulation.
The vertical distributions, in temperate latitudes, of dimethylsulfide (DMS), SO2, radon, methanesulfonate (MSA), nonsea-salt sulfate (nss-sulfate), and aerosol Na(+), NH4(+), and NO(-) ions were determined in samples collected by an aircraft over the northeast Pacific Ocean during May 3-12, 1985. DMS was also determined in surface seawater. It was found that DMS concentrations, both in seawater and in the atmospheric boundary layer, were significantly lower than the values reported previously for subtropical and tropical regions, reflecting the seasonal variability in the temperate North Pacific. The vertical profiles of DMS, MSA, SO2, and nss-sulfate were found to be strongly dependent on the convective stability of the atmosphere and on air mass origin. Biogenic sulfur emissions could account for most of the sulfur budget in the boundary layer, while the long-range transport of continentally derived air masses was mainly responsible for the elevated levels of both SO2 and nss-sulfate in the free troposphere.
An analysis of the relationship between the IMF section boundary crossing, solar flares, the sunspot 11 year cycle variation and the thunderstorm index is given, using the superposition epoch method, for data from more than 13,000 thunderstorms from 10 meteorological stations in the Beijing area and the Northeast region during 1957 to 1978. The results show that for some years a correlation exists between the thunderstorm index and the positive IMF section boundary crossing. The thunderstorm index increases obviously within three days near the crossing and on the seventh day after the crossing. The influence of the crossing on thunderstorms is stronger in the first half year than the latter half year. For different classes of solar flares, the influences are not equally obvious. The solar flares which appeared on the west side, especially in the western region (from 0 to 30 deg) have the most obvious influence. There is no discernible correlation between the thunderstorm index and the sunspot eleven-year cycle.
The use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from the satellite ERS-1 to assist the French polar vessel 'L'Astrolabe' during its navigation through Artic sea ice in the Northeast Passage is reported. The ship spent one month on the voyage from Europe to Japan, and high resolution SAR images and ice maps based on SAR images from ERS-1 and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager were telefaxed to the ship using the Inmarsat system. The time delay from observation to the reception of SAR images aboard the ship varied from 6 hours to two days. The quality of these ice maps was compared with Russian ice maps and observations from the ship. The SAR imagery provided detailed information on ice floe distribution, ice concentration, ice types, open leads, and tracks in ice from icebreakers. The response from the Russian ice specialists on the quality of the SAR ice maps was very positive.
Alternative geometries for the present-day configuration of plate boundaries in northeast Asia and Japan are tested using NUVEL-1 and 256 horizontal earthquake slip vectors from the Japan and northern Kuril trenches. Statistical analysis of the slip vectors is used to determine whether the North American, Eurasian, or Okhotsk plate overlies the trench. Along the northern Kuril trench, slip vectors are well-fit by the NUVEL-1 Pacific-North America Euler pole, but are poorly fit by the Pacific-Eurasia Euler pole. Results for the Japan trench are less conclusive, but suggest that much of Honshu and Hokkaido are also part of the North American plate. The simplest geometry consistent with the trench slip vectors is a geometry in which the North American plate extends south to 41 deg N, and possibly includes northern Honshu and southern Hokkaido. Although these results imply that the diffuse seismicity that connects the Lena River delta to Sakhalin Island and the eastern Sea of Japan records motion between Eurasia and North America, onshore geologic and seismic data define an additional belt of seismicity in Siberia that cannot be explained with this geometry. Assuming that these two seismic belts constitute evidence for an Okhotsk block, two published kinematic models for motion of the Okhotsk block are tested. The first model, which predicts motion of up to 15 mm/yr relative to North America, is rejected because Kuril and Japan trench slip vectors are fit more poorly than for the simpler geometry described above. The second model gives a good fit to the trench slip vectors, but only if Okhotsk-North America motion is slower than 5 mm/yr.
Mesoscale circulation in the Gulf of Alaska is studied by means of processed Geosat radar altimetry results with comparisons to observations of mesoscale eddies and surface circulation. The first set of Geosat data is treated by sea-surface height (SSH) binning in 1-deg latitude x 2-deg longitude boxes and analyzed by complex empirical orthogonal functions and 2D spectral analysis. The second set is taken from ascending Geosat tracks and analyzed as a time series. The Geosat data are compared to observational data including mesoscale eddies and fluctuations in mean surface circulation as well as sea-surface signals generated by numerical models. The data demonstrate the feasibility of a westward propagation of sea-level anomalies, and the Geosat SSH data are found to agree well with model solutions of seasonal variations in sea level in the northeast Pacific.
This paper describes deformation fabrics developed in the northern part of the Hamisana zone in northeast Sudan. New structural data are presented which establish a structural chronology that characterizes distinct events of accretion, folding, and thrust faulting and reactivation of accretion-related faults. The structural data point to an intraplate compressional origin for the Hamisana zone. A review of available isotopic age data is carried out, and it is concluded that Pan-African accretionary processes may have been analogous to Phanerozoic ophiolite and island arc accretion in the western North American Cordillera, where penetrative deformation occurred in response to periodic intraplate shortening events, rather than an ultimate collision of unrelated crustal fragments.
