Assessing observational constraints on dark energy

Observational constraints on time-varying dark energy (e.g., quintessence) are commonly presented on a w 0 –w a plot that assumes the equation of state of dark energy strictly satisfies w(z) = w 0 + w a z/(1 + z) as a function of the redshift z. Recent observations favor a sector of the w 0 –w a plane in which w 0 > –1 and w 0 + w a < –1, suggesting that the equation of state underwent a transition from violating the null energy condition (NEC) at large z to obeying it at small z. In this paper, we demonstrate that this impression is misleading by showing that simple quintessence models satisfying the NEC for all z predict an observational preference for the same sector. We also find that quintessence models that best fit observational data can predict a value for the dark energy equation of state at present that is significantly different from the best-fit value of w 0 obtained assuming the parameterization above. In addition, the analysis reveals an approximate degeneracy of the w 0 –w a parameterization that explains the eccentricity and orientation of the likelihood contours presented in recent observational studies.

A classical, non-singular, bouncing universe

We present a model for a classical, non-singular bouncing cosmology without violation of the null energy condition (NEC). The field content is General Relativity plus a real scalar field with a canonical kinetic term and only renormalizable, polynomial-type self-interactions for the scalar field in the Jordan frame. The universe begins vacuum-energy dominated and is contracting at t=-∞. We consider a closed universe with a positive spatial curvature, which is responsible for the universe bouncing without any NEC violation. An Rφ 2 coupling between the Ricci scalar and the scalar field drives the scalar field from the initial false vacuum to the true vacuum during the bounce. The model is sub-Planckian throughout its evolution and every dimensionful parameter is below the effective-field-theory scale M P , so we expect no ghost-type or tachyonic instabilities. This model solves the horizon problem and extends co-moving particle geodesics to past infinity, resulting in a geodesically complete universe without singularities. We solve the Friedman equations and the scalar-field equation of motion numerically, and analytically under certain approximations.

Instant folded strings, dark energy and a cyclic bouncing universe

We present a wholly self-consistent, complete cyclic bouncing cosmology based on components drawn from string theory and constructed in a way that is under perturbative control throughout (e.g., with temperature much less than the string scale and string coupling g s ≪ 1 at all times). The cyclic evolution is governed by standard dilaton-gravity in (3+1)-dimensions with a perturbatively generated potential and a coupling between the dilaton and a second field that becomes massless at ϕ = ϕ ESP , resulting in an enhanced symmetry point (ESP) that prevents the dilaton from running all the way to zero coupling. A central role is played by instant folded strings (IFSs) — fundamental strings with the unusual property of being much lighter than the string mass while extending far beyond the string length, and violating the Null Energy Condition (NEC). IFSs are produced classically when the string coupling grows with time, which occurs at two critical points in each cycle. In turn, they fulfill a dual function: Enabling cosmological bounces and initiating transient epochs of dark-energy domination that naturally transition into slow contraction. The resulting cosmology eliminates the cosmic singularity and multiverse problems of big bang inflationary models and robustly predicts time-varying IFS-induced dark energy and the absence of primordial B-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background.

Waiting for inflation: A new initial state for the Universe

We propose a cosmological lingering phase for the initial state prior to inflation which would help address the singularity problem of inflation. The Universe begins with a constant (Hagedorn) temperature and then transitions into an inflationary universe while preserving the null energy condition (NEC). We first consider the phase space of positive spatial curvature models within general relativity and with matter sources that respect the NEC. Depending on the duration of the postlingering inflation, these models can produce a small amount of observable spatial curvature in the cosmic microwave background. We also discuss how lingering can arise with or without spatial curvature in theories of quantum gravity when considering the thermodynamic scaling of particles and its impact on the early Universe. The string theory dilaton is essential to the dynamics. There are many open questions that remain. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Dynamical dark energy from lattice quantum gravity

We study the behavior of the vacuum in Euclidean dynamical triangulations (EDT). Algorithmic improvements and better lattice spacing determinations allow us to test the properties of the emergent de Sitter geometries of our simulations to higher precision than previously possible. Although the agreement with de Sitter is good, the improved precision reveals deviations that can be interpreted as nontrivial vacuum dynamics, well described by a cosmological constant that runs with scale. The simulations show that the dominant running is quadratic and that the scale can be identified with the Hubble rate. Several key cross-checks support this picture, including consistent results across multiple lattice spacings and the fact that the null energy condition is not violated. The parameters of the running are fully determined by simulations, enabling predictions when extrapolated to the scales relevant for our Universe. This leads to a model for dark energy that is compatible with current observations, but which predicts deviations from the Standard Model of cosmology at the 𝒪⁡(10 −3 ) level in observables that could be tested with future improvements in precision measurements.

Holographic Space-Time and Quantum Information

The formalism of Holographic Space-time (HST) is a translation of the principles of Lorentzian geometry into the language of quantum information. Intervals along time-like trajectories, and their associated causal diamonds, completely characterize a Lorentzian geometry. The Bekenstein-Hawking-Gibbons-’t Hooft-Jacobson-Fischler-Susskind-Bousso Covariant Entropy Principle, equates the logarithm of the dimension of the Hilbert space associated with a diamond to one quarter of the area of the diamond’s holographic screen, measured in Planck units. The most convincing argument for this principle is Jacobson’s derivation of Einstein’s equations as the hydrodynamic expression of this entropy law. In that context, the null energy condition (NEC) is seen to be the analog of the local law of entropy increase. The quantum version of Einstein’s relativity principle is a set of constraints on the mutual quantum information shared by causal diamonds along different time-like trajectories. The implementation of this constraint for trajectories in relative motion is the greatest unsolved problem in HST. The other key feature of HST is its claim that, for non-negative cosmological constant or causal diamonds much smaller than the asymptotic radius of curvature for negative c.c., the degrees of freedom localized in the bulk of a diamond are constrained states of variables defined on the holographic screen. This principle gives a simple explanation of otherwise puzzling features of BH entropy formulae, and resolves the firewall problem for black holes in Minkowski space. It motivates a covariant version of the CKN [1] bound on the regime of validity of quantum field theory (QFT) and a detailed picture of the way in which QFT emerges as an approximation to the exact theory

Negative Mass in Contemporary Physics, and Its Application to Propulsion

As first analyzed by Hermann Bondi in 1957, matter with negative mass is consistent with the structure of Einstein's general theory of Relativity. Although initially the concept was considered just a theoretical curiosity, negative mass, or "exotic matter," is now incorporated into the body of mainstream physics in a number of forms. Negative mass has a number of rather non-intuitive properties, which, as first noted by Bondi, and then later commented on by Forward (1990), Landis (1991), and others, results in possible applications for propulsion requiring little, or possibly no, expenditure of fuel. As pointed out by Morris and Thorne (1988) and others, negative mass (or, more strictly, a violation of the null energy condition) is also a requirement for any proposed faster than light travel. This paper presents the basic theory of negative mass, the ways by which it can manifest in contemporary physical theory, and the counterintuitive properties that result, including possible uses for interstellar propulsion. Although negative mass has moved from a theoretical curiosity to a concept fundamental to the contemporary understanding of physics, it is still not clear whether bulk negative mass can be manufactured, or if it is limited to only appearing at the cosmological scale (e.g., “dark energy:) or in the quantum (e.g., Casimir vacuum) limit. If it can be manufactured, the propulsion applications would be significant.

The Classical Equations of Motion of Quantized Gauge Theories, Part I: General Relativity

In this and a companion paper, we show that quantum field theories with gauge symmetries permit a broader class of classical dynamics than typically assumed. In this article, we show that the dynamics extracted from the path integral or Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity allows for classical states that do not satisfy the full set of Einstein's equations. This amounts to loosening the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints that are imposed on the initial state. Nevertheless, the quantum theory permits gauge invariant time evolution of these states. The time evolution of these states is such that at the classical level the full set of Einstein's equations would appear to hold, with the physical effects of these states being attributable to an auxiliary, covariantly conserved energy-momentum tensor with no internal degrees of freedom. We derive the generalized Einstein equations for these states and show that a homogeneous and isotropic initial background state contributes to expansion identical to cold dark matter. The inhomogeneous components of this state could source curvature perturbations that grow linearly at linear order. This auxiliary contribution to Einstein's equations could have either sign and thus provide a trivial way to violate the null energy condition, enabling novel gravitational dynamics such as cosmic bounces and wormholes.

Dark energy, extra dimensions, and the Swampland

Perhaps the greatest challenge for fundamental theories based on compactification from extra dimensions is accommodating a period of accelerated cosmological expansion. Previous studies have identified constraints imposed by the existence of dark energy for two overlapping classes of compactified theories: (1) those in which the higher dimensional picture satisfies certain metric properties selected to reproduce known low energy phenomenology; or (2) those derived from string theory assuming they satisfy the Swampland conjectures. For either class, the analyses showed that dark energy is only possible if it takes the form of quintessence. In this paper, we explore the consequences for theories that belong to both classes and show that the joint constraints are highly restrictive, leaving few options.

Gravitational analog of the canonical acoustic black hole in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory

In this work, in the context of modified gravity, a curved spacetime analogous to the 'canonical acoustic black hole (CABH)' is constructed. The source is a self-interacting scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to gravity through the Gauss–Bonnet invariant. The scalar-Gauss–Bonnet coupling function is characterized by three positive parameters: σ with units of (length), μ with units of (length)4, and a dimensionless parameter s, thus defining a three-parameter model for which the line element of CABH is a solution. The spacetime is equipped with spherical and static symmetry and has a single horizon determined in Schwarzschild coordinates by the region r = μ^(1/4). The solution admits a photon sphere at r = (3μ)^(1/4), and it is shown that in the region (3μ)^(1/4) ⩽ r < ∞ the scalar field satisfies the null, weak, and strong energy conditions. Nonetheless, the model with s = 1 has major physical relevance since for this case the scalar field is well defined in the entire region r ⩾ μ^(1/4), while for s ≠ 1 the scalar field blows up on the horizon.

A near-optimum receiver structure for the detection of M-ary optical PPM signals

A class of receivers called conditionally nulling receivers is defined for quantum noise limited optical communications. These receivers have the ability to decide at each moment in time whether or not to coherently combine a predetermined local oscillator field with the received optical field, prior to performing an energy measurement (photodetection) on the combined field. Conditionally nulling receivers are applicable to pulse position modulation and related modulation schemes, which have the property that, at each moment in time, the transmitted signal is in one of only two states, on or off. The local oscillator field which may or may not be added by the receiver is an exact replica of the negative of the received on field; hence, the receiver can exactly null the on signal if the on signal is present and the receiver chooses to use the local field. An ideal conditionally nulling receiver achieves very nearly the same error probability (within a multiplicative factor varying froom 1 to 2.15) as the optimum quantum measurement for quantum noise limited detection of M-ary PPM signals. In contrast, other known receiving methods, such as direct, heterodyne, and homodyne detection, are exponentially suboptimum.

Shocks, superconvergence, and a stringy equivalence principle

We study propagation of a probe particle through a series of closely situated gravitational shocks. We argue that in any UV-complete theory of gravity the result does not depend on the shock ordering — in other words, coincident gravitational shocks commute. Shock commutativity leads to nontrivial constraints on low-energy effective theories. In particular, it excludes non-minimal gravitational couplings unless extra degrees of freedom are judiciously added. In flat space, these constraints are encoded in the vanishing of a certain “superconvergence sum rule.” In AdS, shock commutativity becomes the statement that average null energy (ANEC) operators commute in the dual CFT. We prove commutativity of ANEC operators in any unitary CFT and establish sufficient conditions for commutativity of more general light-ray operators. Superconvergence sum rules on CFT data can be obtained by inserting complete sets of states between light-ray operators.

Active wall conditioning through boron powder injection compatible $\mathrm{ELM}$ control in $\mathrm{EAST}$

Real-time wall conditioning and edge-localized mode (ELM) suppression through real-time boron powder injection into high-confinement mode discharges of the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) have been investigated. The boron powder injection effectively conditioned the plasma-facing components, as shown by the reductions in low-Z and high-Z impurities and the global recycling level in the whole inner vessel, and suppressed the strong magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity in the plasma core. The improved wall conditions also resulted in an earlier transition from L- to H-mode. Boron powder injection also effectively suppressed ELM in the lower single null configuration with BT in the favorable direction while leaving the plasma density and stored energy largely unaffected.

Surface stress tensor and junction conditions on a rotating null horizon

The general form of the surface stress tensor of an infinitesimally thin shell located on a rotating null horizon is derived, when different interior and exterior geometries are joined there. Even though the induced metric on the surface must be the same approached from either side, the first derivatives of the metric need not be. Such discontinuities lead to a Dirac δ-distribution in the Einstein tensor localized on the horizon. For a general stationary axisymmetric geometry the surface stress tensor can be expressed in terms of two geometric invariants that characterize the surface, namely the discontinuities [κ] and [J] of the surface gravity κ and angular momentum density J. The Komar energy and angular momentum are given in coordinates adapted to the Killing symmetries, and the surface contributions to each determined in terms of [κ] and [J] . Guided by these, a simple modification of the original Israel junction conditions is verified directly from the Einstein tensor density to give the correct finite result for the surface stress, when the normal n to the surface is allowed to tend continuously to a null vector. The relation to Israel’s original junction conditions, which fail on null surfaces, is given. The modified junction conditions are suitable to the matching of a rotating “black hole” exterior to any interior geometry joined at the Kerr null horizon surface, even when the surface normal is itself discontinuous and the Barrabès-Israel formalism is also inapplicable. This joining on a rotating null horizon is purely of the matter shell type and does not contain a propagating gravitational shock wave.

An MHD Code for the Study of Magnetic Structures in the Solar Wind

We have developed a 2.5D MHD code designed to study how the solar wind influences the evolution of transient events in the solar corona and inner heliosphere. The code includes thermal conduction, coronal heating and radiative cooling. Thermal conduction is assumed to be magnetic field-aligned in the inner corona and transitions to a collisionless formulation in the outer corona. We have developed a stable method to handle field-aligned conduction around magnetic null points. The inner boundary is placed in the upper transition region, and the mass flux across the boundary is determined from 1D field-aligned characteristics and a 'radiative energy balance' condition. The 2.5D nature of this code makes it ideal for parameter studies not yet possible with 3D codes. We have made this code publicly available as a tool for the community. To this end we have developed a graphical interface to aid in the selection of appropriate options and a graphical interface that can process and visualize the data produced by the simulation. As an example, we show a simulation of a dipole field stretched into a helmet streamer by the solar wind. Plasmoids periodically erupt from the streamer, and we perform a parameter study of how the frequency and location of these eruptions changed in response to different levels of coronal heating. As a further example, we show the solar wind stretching a compact multi-polar flux system. This flux system will be used to study breakout coronal mass ejections in the presence of the solar wind.

Crossing Symmetric Dispersion Relations in Quantum Field Theories

For 2-2 scattering in quantum field theories, the usual fixed t dispersion relation exhibits only two-channel symmetry. This Letter considers a crossing symmetric dispersion relation, reviving certain old ideas from the 1970s. Rather than the fixed t dispersion relation, this needs a dispersion relation in a different variable z, which is related to the Mandelstam invariants s, t, u via a parametric cubic relation making the crossing symmetry in the complex z plane a geometric rotation. The resulting dispersion is manifestly three-channel crossing symmetric. We give simple derivations of certain known positivity conditions for effective field theories, including the null constraints, which lead to two sided bounds and derive a general set of new nonperturbative inequalities. We show how these inequalities enable us to locate the first massive string state from a low energy expansion of the four dilaton amplitude in type II string theory. We also show how a generalized (numerical) Froissart bound, valid for all energies, is obtained from this approach.
