Effect of Stoichiometry on the Structure and Polarization of BaTiO 3

Barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) is a material of interest for photonic device applications due to its strong optical non-linearity. However, BaTiO 3 -based devices have not found widespread adoption, in part due to the challenges associated with synthesizing high quality thin-films. Here, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) imaging is used to investigate the atomic structure of both on- and off-stoichiometric BaTiO 3 synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Here, this investigation reveals an asymmetry in the way the BaTiO 3 atomic lattice accommodates off-stoichiometry growth and unveils features beyond what is expected from diffraction or surface characterization techniques. Excess titanium incorporates into the BaTiO 3 lattice to form pervasive defects despite titanium-rich films having a low surface roughness and high-quality appearance in diffraction. Excess barium forms a rough, water-soluble surface layer but does not significantly impact the quality of the BaTiO 3 lattice. STEM is used to map titanium atom displacement in real-space. The average displacement distance is 30–60 pm in the strained thin-films, higher than the <20 pm displacement in bulk BaTiO 3 . Additionally, the titanium atom displacement direction deviates from the c-axis of the unit cell, which may have implications for the material's electro-optic tensor and thus for electro-optic device design.

Influence of oxygen vacancies on the domain wall stability in BiFeO 3

Oxygen vacancy is the most common type of point defects in functional oxides, and it is known to have profound influence on their properties. This is particularly true for ferroelectric oxides since their interaction with ferroelectric polarization often dictates the ferroelectric responses. Here, we study the influence of the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the stability of ferroelectric domain walls (DWs) in BiFeO 3 , a material with a relatively narrow bandgap among all perovskite oxides, which enables strong interactions among electronic charge carriers, oxygen vacancies, and ferroelectric domains. It is found that the electronic charge carriers in the absence of oxygen vacancies have essentially no influence on the spatial polarization distribution of the DWs due to their low concentrations. Upon increasing the concentration of oxygen vacancies, charge-neutral DWs with an originally symmetric polarization distribution symmetric around the center of the wall can develop a strong asymmetry of the polarization field, which is mediated by the electrostatic interaction between polarization and electrons from the ionization of oxygen vacancies. Strongly charged head-to-head DWs that are unstable without oxygen vacancies can be energetically stabilized in the off-stoichiometric BiFeO 3–δ with δ ~ 0.02 where ionization of oxygen vacancies provides sufficient free electrons to compensate the bound charge at the wall. Our results delineate the electrostatic coupling of the ionic defects and the associated free electronic charge carriers with the bound charge in the vicinity of neutral and charged DWs in perovskite ferroelectrics.

Kinetic Pathways Templated by Low-Temperature Intermediates during Solid-State Synthesis of Layered Oxides

Layered oxides have been the dominant cathodes in lithium-ion batteries, and among them, high-nickel (Ni) systems are attractive because of their high capacity. For practical use, synthetic control of stoichiometry and structural ordering is crucial but has been nontrivial due to the complexity inherent to synthesis reactions, which often proceed via nonequilibrium pathways. In this paper, we report here a combined in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and ab initio study of solid-state synthesis of layered oxides starting from acetate precursors for LiCoO 2 and LiNiO 2 and their solid solution LiNi 0.8 Co 0.2 O 2 . While all three systems ultimately evolve into the same thermodynamically stable layered phase ($R\overline{3}m$), each chemistry involves distinct metastable intermediates. We explain the phase progressions using a structural template model, demonstrating that during the synthesis of LiCoO 2 , the formed metastable spinel polymorph (Li 2 Co 2 O 4 ; $Fd\overline{3}m$) is a kinetically facile lithiation product of spinel Co 3 O 4 —the low-temperature (LT) intermediate from the decomposed Co-acetate. Similarly, in the Ni-based systems, the acetate decomposition products, rocksalts (Ni,Co)O, topotactically template the kinetic pathways of forming disordered rocksalts (Li x (Ni,Co) 2–x O 2 ; $Fm\overline{3}m$), consequently leading to off-stoichiometric Li x (Ni,Co)O 2 with undesired high Li/Ni mixing. These findings highlight new opportunities for engineering precursors to form LT intermediates that template the synthesis of target phases and structural properties.

Kinetic control of phase evolution and defect-mediated recombination in AACVD-grown copper antimony sulphide thin films

Copper antimony sulphide (CAS) is a multinary chalcogenide semiconductor in which small deviations from stoichiometry can drive phase competition and strong defect-mediated modulation of optoelectronic properties. However, the systematic roles of copper precursor fraction and deposition time in governing phase evolution, off-stoichiometry, and recombination dynamics in aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD)-grown undoped CAS thin films remain insufficiently understood. In this work, undoped CAS thin films were deposited by AACVD using Cu(dedtc)2 and Sb(dedtc)3 single-source precursors at 550 °C and a carrier gas flow rate of 150 sccm, while the Cu(dedtc)2 mole fraction (x = 0.15 – 0.55) and deposition time (1 – 2 hours) were systematically varied to probe how growth kinetics influence phase composition, microstructure, and defect-mediated optical properties without post-deposition annealing or extrinsic doping. Increasing copper precursor content drives phase evolution toward tetrahedrite-dominant CAS films at intermediate Cu(dedtc)2 mole fractions, with the film deposited at x = 0.35 exhibiting the strongest tetrahedrite character within the parameter space examined. The films are also copper-rich, antimony-poor, and sulphur-deficient, consistent with off-stoichiometric growth and intrinsic defect formation, plausibly including copper interstitials, Cu-on-Sb antisites, and sulphur vacancies. These growth-dependent compositional deviations are accompanied by tunable indirect optical bandgaps of approximately 1.60 – 2.18 eV and weak visible photoluminescence governed by defect-mediated recombination. Time-resolved photoluminescence reveals bi-exponential decay behaviour with lifetimes of approximately 0.1 – 3.6 ns, with emission dominated by slower donor–acceptor pair recombination and a smaller contribution from faster trap-assisted pathways. Collectively, these results establish an explicit kinetic process–structure–defect–property relationship for AACVD-grown CAS thin films and provide a growth–structure–property framework relevant to future optimization of CAS-based optoelectronic and energy materials.

Chemical Compensation Challenges in Processing Antiferroelectric PbZrO 3 Thin Films

The electric field-induced antipolar-to-polar phase transition in antiferroelectric materials is accompanied by large changes in the structural and functional response, making them attractive for many applications ranging from pulsed energy capacitors to high-strain-high (blocking-)force actuators, solid-state heating and cooling systems, and optoelectronic devices. PbZrO 3 , as an end member of the PZT, (x)PbZr 1–x Ti x O 3 , solid solution, has been the subject of many studies. However, processing of perovskite PbZrO 3 is extremely challenging due to phase instabilities induced by Pb loss at the temperatures necessary for perovskite crystallization. Here, we discuss the challenges associated with Pb loss, as well as its compensation through bulk Pb overstoichiometry and interfacial PbO additions, in chemical solution processed, highly oriented PbZrO 3 thin films. For both 042 o - and 001 o -oriented (o-orthorhombic distortion) PbZrO 3 thin films, the crystallization interfaces are the most important contributors to Pb loss and off-stoichiometric outcomes, and no single approach was sufficient to address these challenges. Pb-rich and Pb-deficient nonperovskite phases including ZrO x were only observable through microscopic characterization, and X-ray diffraction alone could not rule out the presence of such secondary phases. “Ideal” macroscopic antiferroelectric polarization-electric field double hysteresis curves were observed despite (at times) the large presence of secondary phases. However, reduced saturation polarization and increased phase transition electric fields were observed concomitantly with the presence of secondary phase(s) and tentatively assigned to the voltage drop across the ZrO x nanocrystals. Based on these results, it is imperative that the presence of secondary phases always be addressed (beyond X-ray diffraction spectra) in order to correctly evaluate the properties of antiferroelectric films.

Semihard magnetic properties of TiFe 2.5 iron-rich Laves phase and the effect of 4d- and 5d-element-substitutions for Ti

Rare-earth-free compounds exhibiting modest intrinsic hard magnetic properties may still yield viable permanent magnets if their constituent elements are abundant and inexpensive, and the properties are at least comparable to those of the hard ferrites. In this study, one such compound, the off-stoichiometric TiFe 2.5 Laves phase with the hexagonal C14 crystal structure, was found to exhibit – in addition to the already known room-temperature ferromagnetism – a uniaxial, albeit weak, magnetic anisotropy. With a Curie temperature of 422 K, saturation magnetization of 55.3 Am 2 /kg and magnetic hardness parameter of 0.97 this semihard compound is just below the threshold for being of interest for the development into permanent magnets. Replacing a small fraction of Ti with the 4d Nb and Mo or with the 5d Ta or W increases the anisotropy field, but only below room temperature. Replacing Ti with Zr or Hf increases the Curie temperature and leads to a spin reorientation below 200 K. All these substitutions, as well as combined (Zr,W) and (Nb,W) substitutions, fail to improve the room-temperature intrinsic hard magnetic properties of the Fe-rich Laves phase. Furthermore, an attempt to develop a room-temperature coercivity through high-energy ball-milling yielded a value of 0.026 T, an unusually small 2.9% fraction of the anisotropy field. Here, defects inherent in the C14 crystal lattice may be responsible for the underperformance.

Structure-Related Electronic and Magnetic Properties in Ultrathin Epitaxial Ni x Fe 3–x O 4 Films on MgO(001)

Off-stoichiometric Ni x Fe 3–x O 4 ultrathin films (x < 2.1) with varying Ni content x and thickness 16 (±2) nm were grown on MgO(001) by reactive molecular beam epitaxy. Synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray diffraction measurements reveal vertical compressive strain for all films, resulting from a lateral pseudomorphic adaption of the film to the substrate lattice without any strain relaxation. Complete crystallinity with smooth interfaces and surfaces is obtained independent of the Ni content x. For x < 1 an expected successive conversion from Fe 3 O 4 to NiFe 2 O 4 is observed, whereas local transformation into NiO structures is observed for films with Ni content x > 1. However, angle-resolved hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate homogeneous cationic distributions without strictly separated phases independent of the Ni content, while X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that also for x > 1, not all Fe 2+ cations are substituted by Ni 2+ cations. The ferrimagnetic behavior, as observed by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, is characterized by decreasing saturation magnetization due to the formation of antiferromagnetic NiO parts.

NMR studies of the ground states of Ni 50-x Co x Mn 35 In 15 (x=1, 2.5) and Ni 45 Co 5 Mn 37 In 13 Heusler alloys

Three temperature-induced phase transitions at T=T 1 , T M /T A , and T C , related to the ferromagnetic order of the martensitic phase (FMMP), martensitic (structural) transitions (MT), and the ferromagnetic order of the austenitic phase (FMAP), respectively, have been observed in the off-stoichiometric Heusler alloys, Ni 50-x Co x Mn 35 In 15 (x=1, 2.5) and Ni 45 Co 5 Mn 37 In 13 . In this work, the phase transitions temperatures are found to be depended on alloy composition. A kinetic arrest of the AP was observed for Ni 47.5 Co 2.5 Mn 35 In 15 in the magnetization measurements during field-cooling cycle (FCC) at 50 kOe. Depending upon the cooling protocols, ZFC and FCC (at H = 50 kOe), two different ground states of the alloys can be found in Ni 47.5 Co 2.5 Mn 35 In 15 and Ni 45 Co 5 Mn 37 In 13 alloys. The ground states (T=4.2 K and external field H=0) of the alloys was found to be characterized by three main line: two, partially overlapping, at higher frequencies (300-450 MHz), most likely corresponding of manganese resonance lines and one at lower frequency at about 200 MHz. A significant shift in the spectrum of Ni 45 Co 5 Mn 37 In 13 by about 100 MHz to higher frequencies was observed. The correlation of magnetizations obtained from magnetic moment and NMR studies is discussed.

Off-stoichiometric semiconductors Cu 1.33+x Zn 1.33-x In 1.33 Se 4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3): Synthesis, structure, and thermal and electrical properties

The synthesis, structure, and temperature dependent thermal and electrical properties of off-stoichiometric polycrystalline modified zinc blende quaternary chalcogenides Cu 1.33+x Zn 1.33-x In 1.33 Se 4 , where x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, are investigated. Temperature-dependent electrical properties reveal these compositions to be semiconductors with alteration of the carrier concentration and electrical transport via stoichiometric variation. The thermal conductivity is low for all specimens and intrinsic to these materials. First principles calculations are also reported in establishing a fundamental investigation that illustrates the large variation in stoichiometry that is possible in these materials. This stoichiometric variation results in the observed variation of the transport properties. Overall, the results presented reveal fundamental structure-property relationships in these quaternary chalcogenides, and provides a basis for further research into the viability for large stoichiometric variation in other materials that are of interest for technological applications.
